Extremophiles
An extremophile is an organism that
thrives in extreme conditions.

Extremophile literally means ‘extreme
loving’
There are different types of extremophiles:

halophiles

These survive and thrive in very salty environments
There are other types of extremophiles:

Acidophiles:
like acidic environments (low pH) (eg the
human stomach)

Alkaliphiles:
like alkaline environments (high pH)
Anaerobic extremophiles:
thrive in areas without oxygen; some cannot
grow where there is oxygen.

Cryophiles:
loves extremely cold temperatures

Piezophiles/barophiles:
like high pressures
Psychrophiles:
flourish in low temperatures

Thermophiles:
do well in temperatures of 40°C or higher

Hyperthermophiles:
bloom at temperatures of 80°C or higher

Xerophiles:
like environments with little water
