Extremophile literally means ‘extreme
loving’
3. There are different types of extremophiles:
halophiles
These survive and thrive in very salty environments
4. There are other types of extremophiles:
Acidophiles:
like acidic environments (low pH) (eg the
human stomach)
Alkaliphiles:
like alkaline environments (high pH)
5. Anaerobic extremophiles:
thrive in areas without oxygen; some cannot
grow where there is oxygen.
Cryophiles:
loves extremely cold temperatures
Piezophiles/barophiles:
like high pressures
6. Psychrophiles:
flourish in low temperatures
Thermophiles:
do well in temperatures of 40°C or higher
Hyperthermophiles:
bloom at temperatures of 80°C or higher
Xerophiles:
like environments with little water
