Scandal Joyce Banda: Post Operative Lingerie Thesis
1. POST-OPERATIVE LINGERIE :
LINGERIE REQUIREMENT AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION
PRIYANKA RAMPAL
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FASHION TECHNOLOGY
NEW DELHI
2. • Breasts play an important role in defining the female body, both maternal and sexual in appearance. To
enhance them a personal choice, but breast get altered by age and also in manners beyond control and
sadly misfortunate. With the increasing number of breast cancer incidents across the globe, Awareness
about the same has increased Multiple folds, Which in turn increased the number of strong cancer
survivors.
INTRODUCTION
• The research objectifies the section of intimate apparel less ventured : the functionality, significance
and innovation of post-operative lingerie particular after breast augmentation.
• Besides the physical trials the women also go through one in the psyche. The post-operative lingerie takes care of
the physical comfort and the concern of physical appearance of their altered body. The intimate apparel of the
survivors the availability, the table of sizing, accessories though present are not easily available and more often
than not, women have to go through the labour of getting customised lingerie made.
• A medical or surgical bra is designed to
accommodate a woman's special post-
surgical medical needs. Depending on
the purpose and style of the bra,
medical bras and post-surgical bras may
be made with soft, comfortable
materials, or firm materials that
provide compression during the
healing process, also encompass
prosthesis bras, which typically
contain pockets inside the bra to hold
your breast prosthesis after a surgery.
3. OBJECTIVES:
To study the market for existing products and scope of intervention. Analysing the psyche of women who have gone
through mastectomy and their post operative needs.
To present a comprehensive study resourceful to the patients in aspects encompassing:
•Study the affect of mastectomy, lumpectomy or bilateral-mastectomy on the psyche of women
• Effect on the relation between psychological state to comfort
• Awareness on the styles of post-operative lingerie
• Their functionality
• Scope of design variation
METHODOLOGY:
• Simple random sampling and multistage sampling.
• Research interviews taken online to analyze the psyche of women on a generalized bases rather than localized.
• In-depth interviews with open ended questionnaires of women who have undergone either Mastectomy or Bi lateral Mastectomy ,
oncologist in hospitals treating breast cancer , a cosmetic surgeon s and nurses who are in immediate contact with the patient post-
operation and customized lingerie boutique selling prosthesis as well .
• Close ended questionnaire posted online regarding shopping preferences and type of prosthesis more suited.
• In order to begin to build a theoretical understanding of patient satisfaction and quality of life in breast surgery patients and the
different product available for assisting it, Interviews were telephonic transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically.
4. BACKGROUND :
Breast conditions and their associated surgical interventions have a chief impact on quality of life hence it must be the major, if
not, the only end point to research , understand and share.
Relatively little is known about the extent of effect in breast surgery populations, the products available in the market for the
women who have gone through lumpectomy, mastectomy or bilateral mastectomy .
There is a lack of detailed qualitative research, and scarcity of quantitative research, using valid, reliable, and responsive
instruments to measure patient-reported outcomes on psyche and physiology.
Only few researchers have tried to understand the difficulty in buying post-operative lingerie, their best if not accurate fitting ,
the lack of design and factor of excitement and fun , inventions relating in the field of post operative garments.
Women with different conditions may experience the impact of the conditions differently.
Therefore, in this study we have adopted a qualitative approach that involves in-depth interviews with women who had
undergone breast surgery (i.e. Mastectomy and Bilateral Mastectomy ) in order to collect data about their personal experience of
breast surgery. This descriptive data was used to develop a theoretical understanding of patient satisfaction and quality of life in
breast surgery patients.
The analysis is to compare and contrast the experiences of these women in order to develop a conceptual framework with the
view to improving the understanding of the impact of breast conditions and their surgical interventions.
To analyze the products and accessories available to the women after the surgery in the international market.
Gap analysis on the Indian market required to help propose and encourage leading lingerie manufactures in the country to design
and manufacture a range of Post-operative lingerie .
5. RESULT :
• The psychological state and the comfort of the patient is directly proportional.
• Vulnerability gets dissolved with love from spouse and consequent acceptance in society, lifestyle
perusing passion.
• Immediately after surgery compression bras are used to support the key points on the breast.
• Bras with drainage pouches are also used to give ease and comfort while removing the fluids
from the body in the recovery process.
• After the healing process of 8 weeks the survivor is allowed to wear bra and prosthesis which is
largely depending on the nature of surgery and preference in accordance to comfort.
• There are a certain set of queries common in all cancer patient for which doctors, customized
lingerie makers and online brands have supportive answers to. The blogs these days give women
the chance to share experiences, concerns and have ample information on the post-recovery path
which in turn provides a source of inspiration and support to cancer survivors.
• The first set of information is of the nurses hence they should be trained to full knowledge on
the matter . There is considerable scope in the design variation of the bras and have been done
and patented.
6. • Exercise, therapy and passion help in overcoming the above three concerns to a great extent. The support of spouse plays the key
role to the recovery of the patient physically and psychologically.
SEXUAL WELL-BEING
This theme deals with the way that a woman's breast condition and surgery impacts on her sexual life. Negative feelings about
ones breasts may interfere with how sexually attractive she feels. For a number of women, breasts are an important erogenous
zone. They may be worried that the loss of nipple and some of the feeling in the breast area may change sex life for the worse.
They might worry that their partner doesn’t find them attractive with only one or no breasts. The support of the spouse matters
a lot to increase that lost confidence.
PHYSICAL WELL-BEING
Cancer survivors described a range of chest and upper body symptoms such as arm, shoulder, neck, back and breast pain,
as well as tenderness, pulling, discomfort. They also discussed ways in which their breast conditions caused activity
limitations, such as difficulty lifting or moving their arms and difficulty doing vigorous activities such as running, playing
sports, or exercising, as well as doing everyday household chores. Some women, especially women who have large breasts
or are overweight or obese, end up with what are called “dog ears” under their arm. These are pockets of fat left behind
after mastectomy, which further adds to the negative perception about their altered body.
PSYCHE AND COMFORT :
Post surgery women feel very vulnerable, the level of self confidence drops to a considerable percentage, especially in
young women.
Post surgery immediate perception as accounted from the interview of one of the cancer survivors :” I mean you are
disfigured in your eyes, which not everybody feels like that, but at that particular time it's a loss and you've got to mourn
your loss. Because it's a loss of part of your body. You don't want to go topless on a beach or something like that, but you
haven't got the chance to do it now. Your right to decide has gone”
Age at interview: 76
Age at diagnosis: 52

10. “MONOKINI 2.0” BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS MODEL STYLISH SINGLE-BREASTED SWIMMING SUITS
A social art project called “MONOKINI 2.0” gathered designers and models to promote a different perspective on beauty and fashion
with a series of bathing suits made for and modeled by breast cancer survivors. These daring and super-stylish bathing suits are for single-
breasted women who won the battle against breast cancer at the cost of a mastectomy.
The bathing suits were not designed to hide the absence of one or both breasts, though. On the contrary, the aim is to expose the area
and the scar as something that the cancer survivor should be proud of, or at least feel comfortable with, rather than be ashamed of.
“We strive to expand what is accepted and considered beautiful by designing a swimwear collection for women who have gone through
breast cancer,” writes the Monokini team. “The fact is that many women who have had one breast removed due to breast cancer don’t
wish to have breast reconstruction surgery, they wish to continue their lives with one or no breast at all.”
On my long and sometimes
tough journey with breast
cancer, Monokini 2.0
project has been an
amazing experience. I hope
that my picture will give
strength, belief and
courage to the women gone

13. POST OPERATIVE COMPRESSION GARMENT INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING FEATURES:
Fabric- the fabric must be strong, designed to retain its shape and form during extended wear, provide
compression and support equally from all angles and should be breathable. bras come in many different
fabrics like cotton and silk while sports bras are often made from a cotton blend. Recovery bras, however,
use a specific elastic fabric called powernet, that compresses the breast while adding additional support.
Some companies patent their own powernet fabrics, such as Marena’s F5 compression fabric.
Design- the post operative compression garment must be designed to provide the ideal amount of
compression,Too much compression can slow down the healing process, not enough compression defeats
the purchase of wearing a garment.
Inner Support Panels- inner fabric panels are needed at key surgical sites to stabilize the tissue that has
just been shaped and molded and provide the ideal amount of compression
Flat Seams- you will be wearing your garment for extended periods of time, it is a compression garment
that will “press” into the skin, all seams must be flat or the seam line can leave an indention in the skin
and a raised seam can become very uncomfortable.
Zippers, Hook & Eye closures- you will not be able to “step into” a zipper less garment and pull the
garment on. The zippers must be lined to avoid the zipper digging into your body during extended wear,
it is recommended that hook & eye closures be used under the zippers to reduce any stress on the zipper.
PRODUCTS AVAILABLE IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET :
15. FRONT CLASP
Traditional bras feature a clasp in the back while
sports bras lack one entirely. Recovery bras have a
front clasp that adjusts during the recovery
period. Directly after surgery, the woman needs
to wear the bra on its tightest setting so that it
compresses the chest area. As the weeks go by
and the breasts slowly heal, the bra can be
expanded to still give optimal support without
having to totally restrict the movement of the
chest.
BANDS AND CUPS
Post-surgery bras combine the thick, elastic
bands of sports bras, with the soft moulded cups
of traditional bras, to provide the utmost
comfort and support. Elastic bands that run
along the bottom portion of the bra, help to lift
the bust area. The moulded cups are designed to
fit by cup size, and are typically made out of soft
material, without any wires keeping them in
place. These cups add an extra layer of protection
to the breasts underneath, enveloping them in a
protected area where they can heal properly
16. POST-OPERATIVE BRAS IN ACCORDANCE WITH DIFFERENT AUGMENTATION:
• BREAST CONSERVING SURGERY
Breast-Conserving Surgery: This can range from a Lumpectomy or wide local excision, or is sometimes called a partial
mastectomy.
This surgery may leave uneven breast tissue, size difference between breasts and may affect shape, size and even nipple
direction.
Styles of Bras to Consider, to give a natural even look:
- Slightly preformed or padded cups.
- Seam free - seams may irritate surgery site.
- Lace free - lace may irritate surgery site.
- Cotton lined cups or cotton lined bras
- Flex wired or Comfort wired bras.
Nipples are available to "lick & sick" to give a natural look.
• PRE-BREAST SURGERY
Front fastening bras provide easier access for examination, change of dressings and to sleep in.
• MASTECTOMY
-Good coverage of surgery
- Supportive and comfortable
- With or without pockets (most ladies are advised have a bra with a pocket to secure the breast forms.)
• BREAST RECONSTRUCTION
-Pocketed Styles to allow a breast shell to be worn if required.
- Front Fastening for comfort and sleeping.
17. • RADIOTHERAPY
Seam free - (seams may cause irritation on the treated area)
- Cotton lined cups
- "CoolMax" fabrics
- Breathable mesh pockets
- Cotton crop tops.
• LYMPHOEDEMA
- Good support
- Breast and breast form totally contained in bra cup.
- Important to wear correct cup size.
- If you need to wear a prosthesis try wearing a lightweight one.
- Varyform or graduated shoulder straps.
- Deep side bands preferably without side supports.
- No wires.
- Flex or Comfort wires may be worn to support larger breasted ladies. These bras should have no side stiffeners to put pressure
on the lymph site surgery and the shoulder straps should be wide enough for support without causing indentations.
PROSTHESIS :
An external breast prosthesis is an artificial breast form that can be worn after a mastectomy. It helps balance the body and
keeps the bra on the side of the mastectomy from riding up, which helps prevent back and neck pain and a sagging shoulder.
Breast prostheses are custom-designed for most women. They are made from several different types of material (such as
silicone gel, foam, and fiberfill) that are of similar weight and feel to natural breast tissue. Some prostheses adhere directly to
the chest area, while others fit into pockets of mastectomy bras to hold the prosthesis in place. Prostheses can also be made
with an artificial nipple or a special shape depending on a woman's preferences.A breast prosthesis will allow a woman to retain
symmetry without undergoing another surgery.
18. A PROSTHESIS :
1. prosthesis fills the bra cup properly and is neither puckered nor over stretched
2. The underarm section is filled to the same extent on both sides
3. breasts are in even alignment
(they recommend you to wear the mastectomy bra and then try on the prosthesis)
-IN ACCORDANCE OF SURGERY
• Full or radical mastectomy
a full prosthesis, a form which is flat on the back and not hollowed out. This type is designed
to go straight against the chest wall where all breast tissue has been removed ensuring you
are getting a good shape and the best weight from the prosthesis to maintain your natural
posture and balance.
• Partial surgery
partial prosthesis which is a shell form, hollow on the back to incorporate any remaining
breast. Most partial prostheses are silicone and are placed over the remaining breast to give
a natural and even outline to match the natural breast.
• Lumpectomy and Reconstruction
may only need a breast enhancer or a partial breast shaper
TYPES:
• Symmetrical form: can be worn on either side of the body
• Tear drop form : suited for women who have had some underarm tissue removed ,
tear strap extension to fill gap.
• Asymmetrical forms : extensions to fill under arm and upper chest wall where more
extensive surgery has removed tissue. This style form has been designed
specifically for right or left side
• Silicon
• non silicon
(silicon is not preferred in Indian market due to the lack of demand and the
difficulty in weight difference and the whether and climate makes silicon an
uncomfortable option hence cotton blends are preferred) )
19. SHOULDER CUSHION
Shoulder pads or cushion reduce pressure and
strap friction. They are soft and provide a
comfortable cushion between the bra strap
and shoulder. They reduce bra strap irritation
by spreading the weight of the bra strap over
a wider area..
Accommodates shoulder strap up to 1-1/8"
wide. Reduces irritation and indentation.
Contains Hook-and-loop tabs.

product of mastectomy, caused when delicate nerves are severed as breast tissue is removed, though that varies
in individuals the sensation is never fully recovered
FUCNTION REQUIRED :
• TO support breast and fix its position in key locations.
• A mastectomy bra is especially for women who have a breast prosthesis that is not adherent to the skin,
providing a pocket for the breast form to fit into.
• A well-designed mastectomy bra will keep breast forms in place, looking natural. These recovery bras look
like sports bras, and feature extra support as well as an adjustable front clasp
• Wearing a breast form and mastectomy bra offers the comfort of being more balanced. It can also help in
preventing back and neck pain, as well as help you maintain the posture you are used to.

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
(answered by the bra manufacturer and online websites providing products)
• DO I NEED PROSTHESIS AFTER LUMOECTOMY
ANS :LUMPECTOMY :
Slightly preformed or padded cups.
- Seam free - seams may irritate surgery site.
- Lace free - lace may irritate surgery site.
- Cotton lined cups or cotton lined bras
- Flex wired or Comfort wired bras.
If you prefer to wear a wired bra, then a bra with a flex-wire is advised. This is a softer flexible wire and has been
designed to be comfortable and compatable with the prosthesis.
• WHEN CAN I START WEARING THE BRA
ANS:You can be fitted for and begin wearing your breast form and mastectomy bra within eight weeks of having your surgery.
(as told by the shop owner at Lajpath nagar)
22. MOST FREQUENT QUESRIES :
-CAN I WEAR SWIMSUITS
ANS:If a swim form, which is like a conventional breast form but much lighter. Although weighted forms are good
for everyday use — to maintain balance and protect against back and neck pain — they may be uncomfortable or
just downright heavy when swimming.
Swim forms are less dense and float better than weighted forms. Made from clear silicone, they're designed to
allow water to flow naturally across the chest. Some attach into the bathing suit with fabric tabs, to prevent
unexpected "pop-up" moments. Built-in pockets also hold them in successfully.
An ultralight swim form, made from whipped silicone, is practically weightless. It attaches directly to the skin of
the chest with adhesive for a more natural line
Chlorinated water, saltwater, heat, and sunlight won't damage silicone breast forms, but forms should be washed
by hand and kept dry between uses. Learn more about prostheses in the Breast Reconstruction section.
-WILL IT RESTRICT MY DAILY ACTIVITIES
ANS:Wearing a breast form should not restrict your activities. There are lightweight/swim forms available for
exercise and water activities, if you find the silicone breast form unsuitable or too heavy.
-WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO WEAR BREAST FORM?
ANS :Wearing a breast form will help restore your self-confidence and can improve your quality of life after
breast surgery. It is very important to wear a weighted form – it will restore your body’s natural balance and help
prevent the development of spinal curvature, neck and back pain, and shoulder drop.
-HOW DO I CARE FOR MY BREAST FORM AND HOW LONG WILL IT LAST
ANS A breast form should be cleaned with warm water and mild soap, and dried gently after use. When not in use,
the breast form should be stored in its cradle to help maintain the shape of the form and prevent accidental
damage. It can last upto a year or more depending on care
23. -HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO GET THE FITTING DONE
ANS:Due to loss of feeling around the surgery area it is very important to observe the bra fit regulary, making sure
there are no red marks or imprints from the bra. The fitting also depends on weight gain or reduction, it depends on
the lifestyle.
Sizing the Post-Surgery Bra
Bra sizing is never an exact art, and this is doubly true of surgical bras. For breast reductions and augmentations, the
patient needs to measure their underbust. This is the area of the body directly underneath the bust, where the bra
and the band goes. Next, one must measure their bust, the fullest point of the chest. Keep in mind that the patient
must also account for their postoperative cup size.

25. CONCLUSION
•As lifestyles changes in India, women there are becoming increasingly susceptible to breast cancer. While the normal age of contracting breast
cancer was anywhere between 45 and 55 years a decade ago, it has plunged to 35-45.
•2013 , The Lancet reported an impending cancer epidemic in India: by 2020, 70 percent of those suffering from cancer worldwide will be
located in developing countries, with a fifth located in India.
This research has helped me know the needs of the Indian market and encouraged me to propose to Groversons a leading lingerie
manufacturer in India in which i am currently a trainee to start a range of mastectomy bras and accessories. Since they are catering to the
middle section of the society, they have popularity and access to the largest section of the market and would be able to provide post-operative
lingerie to people with easy accessibility.
• GAP ANALYSIS :
• There are a handful of trading companies like Bollywood Lingerie , Juliet India , Zivamme that manufacture post operative lingerie for
breast augmentation. There are a few online websites like tritonmed.com , indiamart.com which provide very basic post-operative lingerie
with limited styles of prosthesis from brands like Marianne and Jodee but the awareness regarding them is scarce and shipping to limited
cities, mainly to metropolitans poses another obstacle in ready availability of post-operative lingerie. There are no sizing charts available
for women shopping online in India.
• In cities there are private wholesale lingerie stores that import prosthesis according to requirement and needs, the women who have gone
through mastectomy do not have option of design variations. The custom made lingerie is basic with no design varaition .It is made by
measurements of individuals and does not always cater every need and comfort required by the women.
• There are limited style of basic mastectomy bra which share common features of puffs and drainage loops, Seamless design - no seams
will irritate sensitive skin Bilateral pockets to hold a lightweight breast form.
• Front adjustable and removable straps Bra is fully open able both on chest and shoulder straps, allowing easy application and adjustment
in the ,Operating Room and/or during recover, Convenient hook & eye closure at front Wide shoulder straps for additional support
The bra includes two loops for fastening of drainage bulbs and 2 textile breast puffs
The breast puffs are lightweight breast puffs for usage right after surgery (one-size)The drainage loops are placed in the rib in each side.
• Cotton blend bras with broad shoulders with pockets or prosthesis are the basic bras available to the women catering customised lingerie.
26. CONCLUSION
• There is initial depression and sense of loss after surgery which is a major part of recovery besides physical
• Although there are a myriad of post operative products, both custom and prefabricated, many breast cancer
survivors are unaware of these options. Part of that problem may lie in the information presented by their health
care professionals.
• Fabric, design, type of surgery and purpose are the factors kept in mind while manufacturing as well as purchase of
lingerie. The fabric is the primary factor when making post-operative lingerie, the design is based on type of
surgery. The fabric should be breathable psychological state and the comfort of the patient is directly
proportional.
• Immediately after surgery compression bras are used to support the key points on the breast. Bras with
drainage pouches are also used to give ease and comfort while removing the fluids from the body in the
recovery process.
• The amount of cancer survivors opting for custom made lingerie is the highest compared to online shopping or
brand shopping as it provides precise fitting, it does not restrict activity as the elastic band in most lingerie does
not let the foam slip. Another reason of high percentage preference is due to hesitation in women after
mastectomy.
• The type of prosthesis chosen are dependant on purpose and comfort, silicon are best suited for swimwear as
they do not soak water and become heavy ,while in the climate of Inida allows foam to be the best option.
• The research Scope of design variation and intervention in India is fairly high in terms of aesthetics, availability
and design variation.
