As bibliotecas são as grandes consumidoras de periódicos de pesquisa, e por isso que estão conscientes do valor que devem pagar para adquiri-los, assim como a importância que tem como divulgadoras do conhecimento e como base da geração de conhecimento novo. Isto é, as bibliotecas são as que concentram uma grande variedade de títulos que representam diversos focos dependendo da orientação que cada pesquisador tenha perante a problemática científica que aborda. Além de adquirir os periódicos, devem ser ordenados e preservados para que possam ser utilizados quando seja necessário consultar os artigos que contêm em cada um dos seus números. Estas entidades têm ajudado os índices para acesso rápido e preciso à informação. Assim ficaram conscientes da necessidade de ter linguagens que permitam a localização eficiente. Estas linguagens podem ser cabeçalhos de matérias, unitermos, palavras-chaves, ou como deseje chamar ao processo de atribuir uma temática a cada artigo. (...) Libraries are the great purchasers of research journals, and it is for this reason that they are very much aware of the price they must pay to obtain these items. They are also conscious of the important position that they hold both as disseminators of knowledge and of the fundamental role they play in the creation of new knowledge. That is to say, it is libraries that bring together a wide range of journal titles which represent different approaches depending on the background which each researcher brings to tackling a particular academic problem. In addition to acquiring them, journals must be stored and organized so that they can be used when the articles contained in each one of their issues needs to be consulted. These journals have benefitted from indexes so that the information they contain can be accessed quickly and accurately. This has brought about a realization that languages are required which will allow them to be located efficiently. These languages may take the form of subject headings, single entries, and keywords or whatever name is given to the process of assigning a subject designation to each article. (...)
