3. Why design as focus for meetup #4?
tech … pervasive | embedded | assumed
gap … experience & outcomes vs. expectations & needs
has design influenced my life this week? ios vs Windows 8, home network router patch,
government web sites, responsive web layout, data privacy settings, personalized web, BC
Ferries wifi, email, open source/ open data, cloud hosting, local business search, group
collaboration tools, …
4. Design Thinking
empathy for the context of a problem to investigate both the
unknown and ambiguous aspects of the current situation,
creativity in the iterative generation of insights and alternative
paths, redefining the original problem, and
rationality in analyzing and fitting various solutions to the
problem context
Wikipedia/ Harvard Business Review/ Ideo
5. Case study (California): Get kids to eat better lunch. The
solution is all about the food, right?
ttp://www.ideo.com/stories/a-cafeteria-designed-for-me/
The 1st solution … hire a caterer that serves some of the highest
nutritional meals in the nation.
The outcome …when the lunch bell rang, many students weren’t
showing up.
The real problem … wasn’t so much about the food itself, but
rather about how it was being served—the design of the lunch
experience.
“aha moment” … In a world in which students are used to
expressing their opinions on social media, they had no voice in
shaping their food experience.

11. Changing role of design
Traditionally design was an afterthought tied to packaging an idea,
this has changed to design being at the core.
How does this new design role change the way products
come together?
Are people open to new ways of design thinking?
12. Designing on the Coast
Describe your design studio. Is space important?
How does living on the coast influence/ inspire your work? Limit your
work? How do you overcome working in isolation?
Where should we "walk" in this community to be inspired? Examples
of good design around the coast?
What was/will be your dream project?
13. Human Centered Design
Ok great, sounds nice, but what is it really? How is it different than
“traditional” design?
What are the tangible results?
What is the difference between UX and UI design?
14. Design and technology tools
What has been the influence of technology on your design process?
What tools do you use? (image, layout, collaboration, prototyping)
15. Practical Take-aways
Should design be left to “designers” …working in swanky offices off-coast ;)
What should the rest of us "non-designers" bring from design thinking
into our work?
Give us 3 take-aways that we can begin using right away (questions/
tools/ processes) .
