Christopher Columbus was a 15th century explorer who made four voyages to the Americas, believing he had reached Asia but actually discovering lands unknown to Europeans. His voyages marked the beginning of sustained contact between the Eastern and Western hemispheres, resulting in enormous cultural, agricultural and demographic changes on both sides of the Atlantic.
