A small Balkan country of a population of 3.6 million.
An area of 28,748 Square Kilometers
It borders Montenegro to the north, Kosovo the northeast, Macedonia
east, and Greece to the south and opposite the ‘heel’ of Italy.
It has 362 km of beautiful coastline: Adriatic Sea to the west and
Ionian Sea to the south-west.
Albania is a relatively undiscovered jewel off the beaten track, offering

Saranda–Albania’sDream Beach
Saranda, the gateway to the
southern Albania, is a small town
located between high mountain
and the Ionian Sea.
Located on the shores of Ionian
sea, in front of Greek island of
Corfu, Saranda is characterized by
a Mediterranean climate and
warm sea waters. Daily ferryboat
link Saranda with the nearby
Greek island of Corfu. Due to its
location and warm weather
Saranda is one of the most
attractive tourist town in Albanian
Riviera, where honeymooners
traditionally spend their holidays.
Located in front of the sea and
along the main promenade there
are some hotels and restaurants
which offer you catering facilities
and accommodation.
The ruins are also preserved of an
early Christian Monastery, of the
Forty Saints, from which the
modern name of the town
(Saranda, forty in Greek) is
derived.
The amphitheater, dating from
the 3rd century B.C., bears
witness to the cultural riches of
the city. Near Saranda stood the
ancient Illyrian city of
Onchesmos, mentioned as a port
in the 1st century B.C. In the 4th
century A.d. the town was
fortified with walls. Inside the
walls have been excavated the
remains of dwellings, water
cisterns and an early Christian
Basilica of the 5th and 6th
century, containing a beautiful
multicolored floor mosaic.
Other mosaics are to be found in
the district museum. Butrint, the
first place you should visit in
Saranda. Among the most
interesting archaeological ruins
are:
- the old amphitheatre
- the temple of Aesculapiu
- the baptistery, with colorful
mosaics and the ancient city
walls.
- An old fortress housing a small
museum watches over the entire
site, which is one of the last
unspoilt natural and ancient
historical areas remaining in
Mediterranean.
The mud and vegetation that
covered Butrinti had protected it
from the natural and human
ravages of time.
