• Table tennis first originated in England as a
higher class amusement in 1880’s
• Table tennis got its nicknames ping pong and
wiffwaff because of the sound generated
while playing
• The first ping pong balls were made of knotted
string, not untill 1901 did people start using
the present day celluloid balls

Russia
• In the 1950’s the innovation of the rubber
rackets changed the game dramatically
• Ping Pong was first introduced as an Olympic
sport in 1988

• Ball with 40 mm diameter and 2.7 grams
• Table divided by a 6 inch high net
• Racket made of wood with rubber coding
6. Game Play
• To start a game a serve is decided by coin toss
• Must serve while holding the ball in the palm
of your hand
• Returning a serve is one of the most difficult
parts of the game
• Ball must be hit so it passes over the net
