Training - Aim
• To provide the skills and knowledge required to operate a centre lathe
• To have a knowledge of the dangers on the section.
Training - Objectives
By the end of this training session you will be able to:
• Employ Safe Working on the Turning Section
• Practice setting up a lathe and its tooling
• Show how you would use a lathe safely
• Demonstrate how to clean down the lathe.
• Complete the Turning unit 013 and associated written tasks
Turning Safety Rules
What are your responsibilities?
Each employee has a responsibility under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to:
“Take reasonable care for health, safety and welfare of him/herself and of other
persons, who may be affected by his/her acts or omissions and that no person shall
intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of
health and safety. Remember you could be liable for prosecution, fine or imprisonment
for contravention of the Health and Safety at Work Act.”

What dangers are there on Turning?
PARTS OF A LATHE
Function of the parts
• Headstock – houses the spindle and the gearbox.
• Tailstock – can be used for mounting drill chucks, large drills/reamers
directly and dead/revolving centres.
• Carriage – has movement along the bed of the machine in the Z axis.
This is where you’ll find the hand wheels and the feed controls.
• Saddle – The top of the carriage where the tool post is bolted to. Has
movement in the X axis.
Function of the parts
• Tool Post – There are three positions where a tool can be set. Each
tool requires a tool holder.
• Compound Slide – Can be set at a specific angle to turn internal or
external tapers. Must be fed by hand.
• Feed Selection Lever – Selects whether the machine feeds in the X or Z
axis.
Function of the parts
• Start/stop Lever – Determines whether the machine starts in a
clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.
• Treadle Brake – A foot bar used to stop the lathe dead.
• Lubrication Pump – Used to lubricate the slide ways. It is located on
the carriage.

Complete the investigation exercise in your booklet.
Feel free to turn some handles on the lathes; they are isolated and
locked off so they can’t be started up.

demonstrates your skills and knowledge associated with Centre
Lathes.
Assessment AUEC2- 013 - Objectives
• Task 1 demonstrate the skills, knowledge and behaviours required
manufacturing a Nylon Task using a 3 Jaw Chuck an associated lathe
tooling.
• Task 2 demonstrate the skills, knowledge and behaviours required
whilst manufacturing an complete Bearing Cover using a 4 Jaw Chuck.

Bench Grinding – Pre Use Checks
• Check that scheduled maintenance has taken place.
• Ensure safety glasses are worn
• Ensure work light functional
• Ensure Water tank available if required
• Ensure E Stop Functional
• Visually Check Guarding to ensure it is functional and clean
Bench Grinding – Pre Use Checks
• Check power switches are functional and damage free
• Inspect wheel for damage
• Ensure machine does not excessive noise/vibration
• Ensure Gap between wheel and rest less than 3mm
• Ensure wheel is not loaded with soft material i.e. aluminium
• Ensure work area is clear and free from obstructions

  • 12. PARTS OF A LATHE
  • 13. Function of the parts • Headstock – houses the spindle and the gearbox. • Tailstock – can be used for mounting drill chucks, large drills/reamers directly and dead/revolving centres. • Carriage – has movement along the bed of the machine in the Z axis. This is where you’ll find the hand wheels and the feed controls. • Saddle – The top of the carriage where the tool post is bolted to. Has movement in the X axis.
  • 14. Function of the parts • Tool Post – There are three positions where a tool can be set. Each tool requires a tool holder. • Compound Slide – Can be set at a specific angle to turn internal or external tapers. Must be fed by hand. • Feed Selection Lever – Selects whether the machine feeds in the X or Z axis.
  • 15. Function of the parts • Start/stop Lever – Determines whether the machine starts in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. • Treadle Brake – A foot bar used to stop the lathe dead. • Lubrication Pump – Used to lubricate the slide ways. It is located on the carriage.
