In 1982 the Dragon32 entered the home computer market but unfortunately there was one small problem ...lower-case letters were almost impossible to access. Two years later Dragon was no more. In 2008 Microsoft released ServerCore providing a fast and streamlined (but reduced functionality) edition of Windows with minimal GUI support and with Windows 2012/R2 Server Core is "by default". Ever since SQL 2012, installation onto Server Core became a "supported" option and meant the single biggest administrative shift for a DBA since the release of SQL 2005 ...or did it? In this exciting session we will discuss administration, configuration and installation of both SQL 2014 and ServerCore in both standalone and advanced AlwaysOn configurations but will the lack of GUI support send Server Core in the same direction as the Dragon32 or spell a bright new beginning for Server based computing and SQL Server?

Ed Burns brings his seventeen years of server side Java experience to bear on the topic of Enterprise Java on Microsoft Azure. Before the advent of cloud infrastructure, the stack was the main thing. This gave rise to many entertaining platform wars, and even personality feuds among the principals. Spring or J2EE? Spring MVC or JSF (or Struts/Wicket/Tapestry/WebWork...)? Spring REST or JAX-RS? Spring DI orCDI? Spring Boot or MicroProfile? Single-vendor proprietary de-facto standard or multi-vendor community developed standard? Ed has seen these "wars" come and go, and even fought in some of them. While "wars" make for great conference talks, blog posts, and articles, at the end of the day creating business value is the whole point of enterprise Java. Ed contends that nowadays, the cloud vendor is the main thing, and the best cloud vendor is one that best supports "all of the above", from lift and shift of existing workloads, to lift and improve, on through to turn-key PaaS solutions. This session will briefly survey the history of enterprise Java to establish the need for an "all of the above" enterprise cloud platform, examine some ways enterprises can use the current offerings from Microsoft Azure, and give a peek into what's in store in the near future.

Still, many brands opt to stay on the conservative side and avoid taking big (albeit culturally relevant) risks. When The Narrative Group took a seemingly “boring” product like yogurt and made it bold by championing the sometimes controversial “cannabis holiday” with Harmless Harvest’s “Harmless Hits Different” Pack a Bowl campaign for 4/20, they were met with 168M earned media impressions, 11M influencer impressions, and record-breaking sales.
