RCSCNM Josh Year Bulletin for quarter Oct-Dec'20

3. December 2020
As I look back on 2020, I reflect on how our lives have changed. The global
COVID-19 pandemic brought pain and loss to many of us. And for almost all of
us, our daily lives, family time, and work also changed this year. But we've made
it to the end of this difficult year, not on our own but by reaching out to one
another, as we always do in Rotary. With each passing year, I become prouder
of our organization.
I will choose to remember 2020 as a year of great change and strength for us;
Rotary didn't stop, despite the pandemic. We removed obstacles, found new
ways to connect, and embraced new approaches to service, such as online
projects and virtual fundraising.
We are not just surviving; we are gaining strength. We are discovering how
resilient our organization truly is. We are seeing for ourselves how Rotary
Opens Opportunities — even during pandemics — to grow, connect, and
engage our members and the communities we serve.
From our home in Ratzeburg to yours, Susanne and I would like to bid you and
your family the warmest of season's greetings. We can't wait to see the good
things that 2021 will bring.

4. January 2021
January is finally here. As we look forward to 2021, our thinking doesn’t have to stop at the end of
these 365 days. Are you thinking ahead about what you will be doing in 2022, 2023, and beyond?
We cannot foresee the future, but we can steer ourselves where we want to go. A famous aphorism
states, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Planning is essential to achieving success in all
areas of life, including Rotary, and we’re getting better at it every year.
I have helped many clubs find that pathway by working with them to build what I call a blueprint, a
multiyear plan that answers the fundamental question: “What is our vision for our club?” The best
plans I have seen are those that are focused, when a club concentrates its resources on the best
opportunities it has. Your Rotary club cannot be all things to its members and to the community it
serves; it has limited human, financial, and time resources. A successful plan factors in assets and
limitations to chart the desired pathway for your members.
Once your club makes a strategic plan, it’s time to take action and carry out the necessary changes.
When we do that — as we engage members in vibrant and active clubs that not only have fun but also
serve their communities with projects that have real and lasting impact — our clubs grow stronger.
And when we discover what makes our own clubs unique and build upon those core values in all our
efforts, Rotary Opens Opportunities to enrich the lives of everyone.

Rtn Dr S Ravi Kumar, CEO & Managing Trustee
of Freedom For You Foundation
- Courtesy Rtn. Ashesh Jain
Dr Ravi Kumar has over 33 years of experience as a top management professional in
large companies in both service and manufacturing sectors in India. Now he is in several
voluntary organizations (NPOs/NGOs) on their Boards or Executive Committee/
Governing Council. He has received innumerable awards/encomiums from many
voluntary organizations, for outstanding service to the community. Many MNCs/ NGOs
involve him in their CSR projects from the stage of ideation to implementation, since he
focuses on max-mileage-CSR projects, with optimal benefit to the target community,
with least INR spend. He is a PGDM, AICWA, PhD, and has undergone many training
programs in health & safety aspects from Hospitals & National Civil Defense College,
Nagpur/ Civil Defense Staff College, Mumbai.
During Covid times he, through his NGO, Freedom For You has worked relentlessly
providing cooked food, water, medical aid and counselling to migrants who were on the
road walking towards their villages thousands of kilometers away.
In conversation with Rtn Ashesh Jain, Dr Ravi opens his heart about his journey of
organizing health camps on weekends to now CEO of an NGO having received numerous
awards
AJ: How did Freedom For You start?
Dr Ravi: It all started with seven friends getting together to organize health camps in the
vicinity of their houses since 2004-05. We sought help from hospitals, doctors for
expertise and equipment, besides schools, temples, gurdwaras etc. for conducting these
free medical camps. All expenses were shared by us. Slowly our group became well
known and members of the public started requesting for camps in their areas. Newer
ideas started coming in. Now we were not restricted to medical camps. That is when we
realized we need money and a Charitable Trust. Hence Freedom For You Foundation was
registered.
AJ: Is Freedom For You working only in Navi Mumbai? What are your activities?
Dr Ravi: Our projects are now in other parts of Mumbai and outside MMR region like
Ratnagiri Dist., some villages in Konkan belt. We are now into sustainable livelihood skill
development, constructing check dams in remote areas, nature conservation thru tree
plantation, rural education infrastructure and other activities like Disaster Management
training, Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation.
13. In conversation with ……Cont.
We have carried out tree plantation in MP, Karnataka, Maharashtra etc. and medical
related projects in Haryana, Gujrat, Disaster Management training in TN, Gujarat,
Maharashtra.
In Titwala we have been allotted 20 acres of forest land for 7 years where we are going
to plant 7000 trees. We will make it into a bio diversified park using perma-culture
techniques, ridge line technology for planting trees, Drone photography of the terrain
before and after planting the trees, geo tagging of trees will be done by using the latest
technology. We shall be using drones, solar power etc. besides having beekeeping and a
butterfly park too.
We have been providing free preprimary education to children from the ragpicker/daily
labourers community in the slums of Rabale since 2014. We had about 78 tiny tots, 2-
5years just around the beginning of the lockdown, and we provided these children with
breakfast and lunch, free education and basic linguistic/math skills. During lockdown,
we have been giving these children Kellogg's Breakfast cereal/chocos at their homes.
In skill development, we have imparted sustainable livelihood training to over 5500
unmarried girls /women in vocations like beauty parlour, tailoring, bag making, dress
designing, artificial jewellery, cake/ice cream, agarbatti and candle making, juice making
etc.
Freedom For You started organising Jaipur foot camps since 2013. We have organised 13
camps till now. We do it in Navi Mumbai and in Ratnagiri Dist., Chiplun/Khed in Konkan
region. We are implementing partners and are financially supported by Dow Chemical
and artificial limbs are provided by Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayta Samiti. We get
approx. 400 patients in each camp which are 3-4 days. Till now we have touched lives of
close to 4000 beneficiaries during camps, and over 5000 out of the camp days
AJ: Any awards and recognition?
Dr Ravi: We are the first NGO out of 33 lakhs NGOs to be rated Platinum by Guide Star
India. Since 2015 onwards Global Giving UK, since 2017 Global Giving USA have rated
Freedom For You Foundation as a Superstar NGO. CAF America, which recognizes only
those NGOs sponsored by a corporate based in America has been rating us high since
last four years. This helps us in receiving any type of donation from Americans
(corporates and individuals)
AJ: Which corporates are you tied up with you?
Dr Ravi: There are many Multinational corporate which have recognized us as their
preferred partners for their CSR projects. To name a few, Dow Chemical, Huntsman,
Lubrizol, BASF, Croda, Evonik, Covestro, HDB Finance, Corteva, are some of the major
contributors. Our social investment ranges from Rs 1~1.5 crores worth of projects every
year under CSR.
14. In conversation with ……Cont.
We have also raised funds regularly thru crowdfunding campaigns from many
crowdfunding platforms in India and abroad. During Covid, in the first few months of
lockdown, we could raise over Rs27 lakhs from these campaigns from Individuals in
India.
AJ: You had been very active during lockdown since March 2020. Tell us something
about it.
Dr Ravi: Even before the lockdown started and Covid19 was still a few days away from
being declared a dreaded word, we donated 4 ventilators worth Rs 28 lakhs to Kasturba
Hospital for Infectious Disease in Mumbai, on behalf of Dow Chemical, which was the
first company to come forward to help the hospitals and front-line warriors to save lives
of Covid19 patients.
We also worked with at least 15 Hospitals and 6 Municipal Corporations by supplying
them PPE kits, hand sanitisers, face masks, pulse oximeters, equipment like high tech
ICU beds and patient beds oxygen concentrators, Bipap machines, baby bed warmers
etc. We were supported by many corporate / individuals / organizations in funding our
supplies. To the 6 Municipal Corporations we gave 5000 PPE kits, 4000 litres of hand
sanitizers and 10000 face masks.
We also gave supplies of PPE to fire brigade, police and sanitation workers since these
people were often exposed to the virus other than medical fraternity.
We supplied 8960 dry rations kits to migrant labourers, PWDs/LGBTQ community,
Adivasis, church, police, blind persons etc. We also distributed over 3000 hot lunches,
8000 bananas, 7500 biscuits, to those migrant labourers who embarked on an
impossible task of reaching their hometowns on foot, thousands of miles away. With
permission of Railways, we also distributed over 12000 packed ready to eat foods to
labourers who got into trains to go to their hometowns.
There are many people who are blind and sell items in local trains. With Railways
shutting down local trains these people were unable to sustain their livelihood.
Freedom For You could reach the homes of these people and gave them dry rations
continuously each month for nearly 3 months, We also got their bank account details
and deposited 1000/- for meeting their other expenses. We procured 10 tons of rice
and 10 tons of wheat with the help of FCI (Food Corporation of India) to distribute
among people affected by Pandemic lockdown.
For Adivasis, located 50-90kms from Mumbai, we gave dry rations, clothes etc.
We expected that the schools would reopen in 3 months. Hence, we took this
opportunity of lockdown to build toilets for girls in 10 rural schools in Konkan region.
We also renovated and painted these schools and installed drinking water facilities
funded under CSR from reputed companies. The girls will be delighted to see the
developments when they return to school in a few months.
15. In conversation with ……Cont.
During the lockdown, many NGOs like Rotary, Humsafar joined us in reaching the people
affected by the lockdown and we also helped other NGOs too like Premdaan, MBA
Foundation, Future Aim Foundation, Blind Association of India, Adventures Beyond
Barriers, etc.
AJ: What is this new ACU unit at Jumbo Covid Care Centre in BKC coming up for Covid
treatment?
Dr Ravi: Yes, that is one of my favorite projects. Five corporations Dow Chemical, Evonik,
BASF, Croda and Covestro have funded 3nos of Portable Containerized Acute Care Units
with 5 ICU beds in each of the ACU units. We have created 15 high-tech ICUs in 40 ft
containers for treatment of highly symptomatic Covid19 patients. They are called
Containerized Acute Care Units. Each container has 5 ICU beds, a toilet and a hand
wash. It has facilities for remote patient monitoring, so that doctors and nurses can
avoid frequent exposure to corona virus. The containers are equipped with HVAC
systems, cameras, Wi-Fi systems and virus burners. In most Covid Care Centres, the air
from the room is left into the atmosphere which may result in infecting people coming
near such centres. But in these ultra-modern facilities the viruses will be burnt hence
reducing the possibility of spreading infection. These containers are also equipped with
ventilators, Bipap/ HFNC equipment, Multi para monitors, etc.
AJ: What is your vision for the future of Freedom For You.
Dr Ravi: In next 10 years we want to focus on Education infrastructure rural/peri-urban
areas, WASH, Health, Ecology and Environment, and Emergency response Training.
Besides, we want to equip the public adequately with knowledge and hand on training
in disaster management to save precious lives during any disaster.
In addition, we impart training in First-Aid, First Responder Training, Basic Fire Fighting
techniques etc. to Save Life Around You which is our main mission. We have received
Maharashtra Govt Approval and recognition to our 'Freedom Institute for Emergency
Response and First Aid Training’ for imparting training in First Aid to industrial workers
in Maharashtra.

ARTOF GIVING
Why call it Art? Why not gift? Why not by any other name? For me It has been simple, it
must come from the Heart and touch the Heart
Let me say how it starts in many Hindu families. when a child is -say around two years
old, when she starts eating, often spilling, elders in the family stretch their hands, and
ask the child to give something to eat, children normally give but if some child does not
respond, parents encourage him or her to give. Now you have sown the seeds of giving
and it all depends upon how you nurture this as the child grows.
Take for instance Karna of Mahabharata Epic, he is known as Daanveer Karna and is one
who does not refuse to give if someone asks something from him. It, in fact, has doomed
him as per mythology. Of course, there are many reasons given too, something like- he
was with wrong side of Dharma in the epic
Here I make a small comment “When asked “is much different than voluntarily giving,
not that I am belittling giving.
What is the ultimate of giving? Often, I dwelt with question with thoughts like repaying
for what we got from life or society, helping the needy, getting satisfaction or feeling
good. There could be any number of reasons for everyone.
One thing is sure if you have ever given to get something in return, it is not right. The
worst part is giving under pressure or Coercion or peer pressure.
We have classical saying ‘Apatra Danam’ that is giving to undeserving people. But I feel
while giving, we should not make a judgement.
At times, I felt that some people do not even say ‘Thank you’ for the help given. As years
passed, I wondered- am I asking something in return? We say minimum curtesy
demands it, curtesy like respect cannot be demanded, it must be inherent in the people
or in upbringing. Is it right to expect it from others? Being nice and courteous is after all
a part of character which reflects the upbringing of an individual.
Once I was sorting out clothes which I wanted to give away…I found a favorite shirt of
mine in the lot. “you want to give it?”. Asked my wife
“Yes “I said a bit uncomfortably.
Soon I realized giving what you want for yourself is altogether a different
experience…. very pleasant indeed!
Cont..........
17. ARTOF GIVING cont.…….
As a Morning Walker, I used to see faces grumpy and carrying world’s burden on them
like Hercules. I understand everyone has problems in this world, but question is- will you
allow the problems to rule you or you solve those problems.
Giving does not mean a gift or something which has a commercial value only - even a
good smile and a wish like ‘Good Morning’ makes a lot of difference. Do not worry if a
person looks bewildered or grumpy, repeat it often... see the difference
A bit out of way, I for one love walking and enjoy walking thoroughly – now I know how
different it is for those who do it for health or any other reason. When you love it, you
miss walking even a single day, you feel very uncomfortable. If you do it for any other
reason, you will look for an excuse to miss it.
As a family, we were taught, never to visit elders or children without a gift, often we
would carry fruits or sweets when we visited elders or a newborn- it is indeed a
beautiful practice to carry gifts, flowers, fruits or sweets when we visit people. Similarly,
when we give without expecting anything…it’s an amazing feeling …you feel blessed!
When someone does a good job complimenting them genuinely is a gift. While
complementing, do not make a mistake of comparing his work with the work of any
other individual. You may end up making the person feel bad.
some people find it difficult to accept compliments but that should not stop you from
appreciating their work. I do feel we should be able differentiate between genuine
compliments and routine compliments. I mean appreciation coming from lips- as it is
said not from the heart, it is doing for the sake of doing-which we should certainly avoid.
When we send birthday greetings, We are so much addicted to text messages…one
person starts and the rest follow- a herd mentality! we finally miss something! I, for
one, love to personally call and wish greetings -as it is nice to listen to the happy voice of
the birthday person.
Here I would like to share an experience which makes me feel sad even today- there
was a friend, a classmate in Engineering, who once asked me Rs 5000 way back in 1985,
I did not have money, his business was down –I could still have borrowed money and
given to him, but I did not – it hurts even today I could not help someone who needed
help. Many times, I gave money- never got it back but Thank God it did not make me
suffer much. On the other hand, God blessed me with more.
So, I say bye for now, make Giving a HABIT.
