In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms of conventions of
real media products?

2. Forms of conventions
In order for our film to hit its genre
we portrayed different styles of
forms and conventions in order to
re lect this theme, such as the speed
of the continuity, and using extreme
close ups when showing great detail
to create tense atmosphere for the
audience. By creating this idea, it’s
helping our audience to also play
along to our theory of how we want
them to react and feel. Feelings such
as uneasiness.

3. Narrative
We came up with the plot a ter researching into films
such as the ring and the grudge. By creating a similar but
not in the same extreme character Lucinda, we decided
to then focus of the age and the troubles that she can be
facing with. To re lect this plot we decided to start the
opening sequence as a non-linear, to show the audience a
little more information from Lucinda’s past by creating
lashbacks, and get them intrigued from the start and
not lose focus of the plot.

4. Iconography
To help and portray stereotypical scenes in our film, we decided to use visual
conventions such as the costumes, setting and characters to represent its
original genre.

5. Camera
A ter watching horror films, I noticed how there’s always a build up and
false alarms before the actual event occurs. So we decided to use extreme
close ups to create a false alarm to the audience and keep them on the edge of
their seats. We also used forms such as shallow focus and focus pull to change
the focus of an object to something else and get the audiences attention to
what we’re trying to portray. Other shots such as over the shoulder angle
just allowed the audience to see who’s speaking by seeing them at the same
time. I also noticed how in films such as the ring the angle of the camera
always re lects the power of the characters so we decided to use the same
perception in our film, and let the audience look up to Lucinda and down to
the psychiatrist.

6. Typography
The title at the beginning of the opening sequence was
designed and edited to signify the genre of the film
which is horror but also give a little hint of what’s
about to start.

7. Continuity & Editing
In horror films it is almost expected for
the continuity to pace up the speed up
before the event occurs, so a ter
researching and planning out
specifically the speed of the continuity
and the shots used we got another idea,
that by editing and using short length
but speeded up shots we would create a
rhythm of anticipation and continuity
for the build up to the event and a
awareness of verisimilitude.
