2. “Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and
tongue of dog, Adder's fork, and blind-
worm's sting, Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing, For
a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-
broth boil and bubble. ”
Students from the Semiahmoo
Science Club and students from H.T
Thrift Elementary got together for a
day of haunted science!
3. “I think that the
Haunted Science
event at Semi is
great way for kids to
learn about the
principles of
science, in a fun
environment!” said
Jane, the president
of the Semiahmoo
Science Club.
4. First on the agenda, was the Mentos in Coca-Cola demonstration.
Holes in the Mentos allow carbon dioxide to come in and pushes all
the liquid up and out of the bottle. Resulting in a huge geyser!
5. Behold the Pumpkin
Pendulum! This
pumpkin is actually
being held up by a
really strong type of
string, and attached to
the ceiling. Students
hold the pumpkin up
to their nose, and let
go. The pumpkin
swings back and forth,
but never hits the
person in the face! This
is due to the
Conservation of
Momentum!
6. Ooooh, what could this be? Atomic Slime
from Outer Space! Mix polyphenol sodium
and acid, and you get this glow-in-the-
dark creation!
7. Next we have the “Can
Crusher”. A can gets
heated on a Bunsen
Burner (what the Pepsi
can is sitting on), and
then placed in cool
water. Bam! Just like
that, the can gets
compressed within
seconds (Orange Crush
can being held up).
8. What exactly is the
electric pickle? It starts
with an electric circuit,
which is incomplete.
Hook up the pickle,
and the light bulb
turns on! Fascinating,
isn’t it? Never
underestimate the
power of the pickle!
9. Eeeew, gross! It looks
disgusting, but it is so
much fun to play with.
Oobleck is a mixture of
cornstarch and water. It
is known as a non-
Newtonian fluid.
Oobleck can be
moulded like a solid and
also act like a liquid. It’s
a mix of both a liquid
and a solid.
10. This is known as a Plasma Globe. The red
and blue streaks seen, are different
frequencies and a high voltage. When
hands are placed on the globe, it alters
the frequencies. It is definitely cooler
than any regular globe!
11. “Where there is no
imagination there is
no horror” Very true
indeed. After a day of
imagination, science,
fun and mysteries the
students from H.T
Thrift left with a bag
of candy and prizes.
While the students of
Semi Science club,
were left with a mess
to clean up!
