On the Road Again!
Another Historic Summer Visit in Canada:
Historic Old City of Kingston

She Who Must be Obeyed with her “student” Ally (our Grand daughter), She Who Must be Obeyed III (in
training) on their way to lunch at Chez Piggy’s in Historic Old Kingston
3. 3
On the other hand, Chez Piggy is something else
altogether. It’s more of an upscale restaurant
than the Toucan.
They are across the small courtyard from each
other and it’s a very interesting contract.
If you’re ever in Kingston make it a point to try
them, you’ll be happy you did.

I must confess, I am a former resident of this beautiful historic
city and I love it deeply even after almost 30 years away. While
living there a few of my friends and I became ‘habitués’ of both
the Toucan and Chez Piggy’s.
The Toucan one the one hand is a typical Irish Pub, with myriad
varieties of ales and beers available for your pleasure and well
as your typical Pub Food which is a notch or two above the
rest. I have always enjoyed the ambiance and the people at the
Touc.
I have in the past two years, when in Kingston, stopped by for
lunch and a pint…and it was as good as ever and I even
introduced :She Who Must be Obeyed to it last summer and
she seemed to enjoy it too.

How many of you, out there, remember the early 1960’s Rock N Roll Band
“The Lovin’ Spoonful”? In the early to mid 60’s I was in my late teens and
that was one of the best rock bands around - You gotta remember that
was the time of the British Invasion and Great American or Canadian
Bands were far and few between.
I can hear you now! Poor Old Fergus, he’s finally lost his mind! What on
earth is he talking about this time? What could a 1960’s Rock Band
possibly have to do with going to lunch at a restaurant in Old Historic
Kingston?
Now, there’s an excellent question. And NO I haven’t lost my mind, just yet!
6. 6
How about “ The Mugwumps” do you remember them?
They were made up of Mama Cass Elliot, Denis Doherty, Jim Hendricks
and Zal Yanovsky. Mama Cass and Denis Doherty as we all know left the
group to form the Mamas and the Papas and Zal Zanovsky left to form the
Lovin Spoonful with John Sebastian to whom Mama Cass had earlier
introduced Yanovsky. They all went on to have fantastic music industry
careers. Finally, after only 4 years, in1967, when the Lovin Spoonful broke
up, Yanovsky abandoned the music industry for good, settled in Kingston
and along with his then wife Rose Richardson decided to go into the
Restaurant business. And the result of their collaboration was the
establishment of Chez Piggy which has become a Kingston institution.
Yanovsky, in Kingston was a very private person, he ran his beloved
restaurant and could be seen regularly greeting diners and the entrance
and escorting them to their table. He would ‘float about’ the restaurant
and check that everything to people’s liking and never once was there even
a hint that he was that lead guitarist of the famous band The Lovin’
Spoonful…

The restaurant did very well and led to the development of a second outlet
named Pan Chancho, a bakery and restaurant a few blocks from the
original. Zal and Rose and Victoria Newbury published The Chez Piggy
Cookbook: Recipes from the Celebrated Restaurant and Bakery which
became a best seller and still is. .
Sadly on Friday, December 13th, 2002 Zal Yanovsky died at age 57 of a
massive heart attack at his home near Kingston. The business was handled
by his wife Rose after his death until her own death 2 years later. Both,
were known in the community for they philanthropic work particularly with
underprivileged children. Their foundation continues their work today.
The business is now run by Zoe Yanovsky; she is the daughter of Zal and his
first wife Jackie Burroughs (the renowned television actor of The Road to
Avonlea series). Zoe took over the business in 2005 after Rose’s death and
has been running it successfully ever since – she has also published a
cookbook : “The Pan Chancho Cookbook”.
10. 10
Fresh fruit and vegetables picked before dawn this morning and available by breakfast time…and all
locally grown! We even saw 8 or 9 varieties of tomatoes – everything from the regular beefsteak and
cherry tomatoes to very rare heirloom varieties (some actually black or purple in colour – amazing
choices.
11. 11
And home baked products such as these including the: “cranberry, zucchini and walnut
slices” for only $3. each or the unbelievable butter tarts (my all time faves…)
12. 12
And just across the street from City Hall Plaza and the Market is Kingston’s own ‘ADUANA’ the Custom’s
House dating back to the early 1790s.
