12. Business Planning Use Cases for
Cognos Insight
1. The current, enterprise planning model lacks
dimensions that a dept or LOB needs. (“Shadow”
planning is done off-line, then re-keyed.)
2. The current planning model’s sandboxes don’t have
the structure that all dept’s require.
3. The current reports and models rely on data
attributes that planners really need as dimensions.
4. New reporting or planning cubes need to be
prototyped (POC’s) before enterprise development.
5. Group planning processes can’t wait for enterprise
resources. [No enterprise planning platform . . . Yet.]
12
13. Business Intelligence (BI) Use Cases for
Cognos Insight
1. The current enterprise reports and framework
manager models don’t contain all the dimensions
or attributes needed for additional analysis,
discovery and visualization, but the source data is
available.
2. The current dashboards don’t support the
business needs for monitoring operations.
3. The current BI packages don’t support sharing
comments or adding what-if scenarios and other
data updates that need to be shared.
13
14. General Cognos Insight Process Steps
for Planning and Analysis Use Cases
1. Individual, group, department, or LOB data
cubes created from enterprise or local data.
[Import data from: BI list report, ODBC relational connection,
TM1 cube view, or flat file.]
2. Add, change, delete, restructure dimensions.
3. Add measures, calculations, versions, scenarios.
4. Add analysis and visualization graphs and charts
in multi-tab workspaces.
5. Share, Publish, and/or Distribute (local server,
TM1 server, Cognos Connection).

36. CI Import Notes
Recommend: “Import Data” instead of dragging a flat file onto
the workspace . . . Why? . . . Automatic dimension
identification logic rarely works the first time.
Excel file: Preferred format: dimensions in the left-hand columns, measures in the right-hand columns:
Especially non-text items can be construed as measures when they should be treated as dimensions: sample result –
Departments and Accounts below should be dimensions but are treated as measures when dragged onto workspace:
36
37. CI Import Notes (cont.)
Therefore, recommend using Get Data > Import Data drop-down menu item instead of dragging a flat file onto the
workspace.
This choice results in picking of one of the four input options:
And the visibility
of how columns
are interpreted:
37
38. CI Import Notes (cont.)
And the ability
to define and
map the source Or by using the
data columns as Properties area
you intend . . . (with or without
the Advanced
By Right-clicking options – at
the data column right):
(above).
38
39. CI Import Notes for Crosstab Data
That is also the only way to support data in columns as this example for monthly measures:
39
40. CI Import Notes for Crosstab Data
If you proceed to Mapping without modifying the Source Details, the Month columns are each, individually
interpreted as separate measures (incorrectly):
40
41. CI Import Notes for Crosstab Data
Instead, expand Source Details; Choose No for Data Contains Column Labels; and Choose Crosstab.
Enter the number of Dimension columns (not counting the Months (Co. E and beyond):
41
42. CI Import Notes for Crosstab Data
Now the monthly data columns have been converted into a fifth dimension column containing the Month names
and the one measure is in the sixth column. Next: use the Properties pane to name the dimensions and complete
the mappings.
42
43. CI Import Notes for Crosstab Data
Completed the mapping choices including Months rolling up to Years in the Time dimension:
43
44. CI Import Notes for ODBC Data
From Get Data > Import Data > choose Source Type “Relational Data Source (ODBC)” will provide access to whatever User and System DSN’s are
already setup on the computer being used:
44
45. CI Import Notes for ODBC Data
Choose one ODBC connection (top-left); Sign-in to that source (bottom-left); enter the Query or choose Open Query Builder (right picture):
45
46. CI Import Notes for ODBC Data
Drag and drop query builder:
46
48. CI Import Notes for BI Report Data
From Get Data > Import Data > choose Source Type “IBM Cognos Report Data”; Fill in the System Gateway URI to the BI installation; Test and then
Navigate to the report to be imported:
48
49. CI Import Notes for BI Report Data
Note: Only List type reports are valid for importing to Cognos Insight:
49
50. CI Import Notes for BI Report Data
Then Data Preview and Define the
Mapping as before:
50
51. CI Import Notes for TM1 Cube View Data
First, Sign the Workspace into the Enterprise TM1 installation (left-side); Log on (if necessary, top-right); then Choose the Planning Server
(model) to use (lower-right):
51
52. CI Import Notes for TM1 Cube View Data
Note: Only TM1 servers that have been Started will be available (left-side); then choose Get Data > Import Data > Source Type “IBM Cognos TM1
Cube View” (right-side). *If you didn’t sign in to enterprise TM1 (see the previous slide), this choice will be grayed out and unavailable.]
52
53. CI Import Notes for TM1 Cube View Data
Choose the Cube to use and then the View to use. (Next Steps: Data Preview and Define the Mapping as before.

Hello. Welcome to this month’s installment of the Senturus education series in which we demystify business intelligence. In today’s session we will discuss the keys to success in business intelligence.
After a quick introduction of the team, we’ll describe what success in business intelligence looks like. We’ll then describe the primary keys to success based on we have learned across more than 1,000 projects during the past 12 years. Next, we’ll share our perspectives on the expectations business intelligence technology vendors are setting relative to success in BI. We’ll wrap with a Q&A session that will address the questions not already covered interactively during the webinar.
