Tip #3 Research, Study, and Plan!
> RESEARCH a business is to be diligent and systematic by
inquiring or investigating into the chosen trade in order to
discover or revise facts, theories, applications, etc.
> STUDY the business by reading books, articles, attend
workshops, take courses, etc.
> PLAN: Write a BUSINESS PLAN of course! This will help guide
your business in detail how to achieve its goals in the first several
years of operation.
• Say you are a nurse, but want to start a floral business. Its been a great
hobby, but you never ran a floral shop before? It would be a great idea
to volunteer or work in one to learn how to run one.
• Already have hands on experience in your trade of choice? Great you
have the foundation to work from!
Tip #4 Get some Hands on Experience
• Figure out your start up cost before you start your
business.
• Make sure you budget for creating your legal structure,
licenses and permits, logos, marketing, insurance,
utilities, sinage, website, office supplies, salaries, rent,
etc.
• Consider your ongoing monthly expenses

job and save.

Each legal form has different legal and financial
ramifications.

someone to share, goals,
workload, legal responsibilities.
Cons You are sharing the power
and it can get ugly if you do
not see eye to eye.
 Limited Liability Company: Pros
protects personal liability , easy
to create, inexpensive. Cons
Members only vote.

people.
• Traffic: Walking and Cars
• Competition: know who they
are.
• Visibility: Needs to be easily
seen.
• Signs: Check to see if any
restrictions before ordering.
• Property condition: Is building
Tip #8 Location, Location, Location
• Rent: Reasonable?
• Zoning: Isit right for your
business
• History: Bad reputation and
crime in area.
• Parking: for workers and
customers
• A brand is your public image.
• Your unique position in the
marketplace.
• A graphic image [Logo],
reinforces your name and
builds your brand.
Tip #9 BRANDING
• A brand is the essence of what
makes your business unique.
• It is your name, logo, slogan,
and purpose into a
recognizable entity.
• There are plenty more tips on
branding that will be covered in
future presentations.
 Your first crew, should be
qualified, experienced, and
have the qualities that will
foster the right customer
service to the public.
 Never be desperate enough to
hire people on a whim. Wait
until the right candidate fits the
opening. It will pay off in the
end.
Tip # 10 Hiring and Firing
 If you have an employee that is
not working out, follow all H.R
laws before firing.
 Its wise to have the
replacement in place prior to
removing the employee. This
way, there will not be a
shortage of staff.

Tip # 10 Hiring and Firing  If you have an employee that is not working out, follow all H.R laws before firing.  Its wise to have the replacement in place prior to removing the employee. This way, there will not be a shortage of staff.
