Offering user interfaces for interactive applications that are flexible enough to be adapted to various context-of-use scenarios such as supporting different display sizes or addressing various input styles requires an adaptive layout. We describe an approach for layout derivation that is embedded in a model-based user interface generation process. By an interactive and tool-supported process we can efficiently create a layout model that is composed of interpretations of the other design models and is consistent to the application design. By shifting the decision about which interpretations are relevant to support a specific context-of-use scenario from design-time to run-time, we can flexibly adapt the layout to consider new device capabilities, user demands and user interface distributions. We present our run-time environment that is able to evaluate the relevant model layout information to constraints as they are required and to reassemble the user interface parts regarding the updated containment, order, orientation and sizes information of the layout-model. Finally we present results of an evaluation we performed to test the design and run-time efficiency of our model-based layouting approach.

A Tool-supported Process for Visual Attention Prediction for Designing HMIs for Maritime Monitoring Tasks Monitoring complex systems includes scanning, aggregating and processing data from various sources. The design of graphical interfaces for monitoring tasks involves a fine-grained exploration of the importance and expected frequency of events that an operator needs to be informed about. The Human Efficiency Evaluator is a tool for the prediction of human behavior. We extended it to predict the distribution of operator’s attention while monitoring interfaces. The prediction is based on the SEEV model. We show that our tool can be used by experts with different backgrounds to generate predictions following a structured, semi-automated process. In a qualitative study with subject matter experts, we analyzed different HMI designs for a navigation task in the maritime domain. We evaluated their mod-eling time, tested different prediction result visualizations, and investigated in the model differences between the subjects. Different to what we originally expected, the study revealed that the models created by the subjects substantially differ depending on their perspectives. Heat maps visualizing the predicted attention allocation were appreciated by the subjects and enabled them to argue about their perspective.

With new sensors that can capture hand and body movements in 3D, novel interaction techniques gain importance. But development of new forms of interaction is highly iterative, depends on extensive user testing and therefore is expensive. We propose a model-based notation using statecharts and mappings to ease multimodal interaction technique design. This model-based specification can be used to communicate designs, for evaluation and to enable re-use. Our contribution continues previous research on model-based interaction technique design considers multimodal interaction and addresses problems like the state explosion, error management and consideration of output modalities mentioned by earlier research. We evaluate our notation by comparing it with NiMMiT referring to the same use case to identify similarities, strength and problems.

With the introduction of new modes to control user interfaces like speech, gesture and multi-touch Post-WIMP interfaces increasingly substitute classical WIMP (windows, icons, menus, pointer) user interfaces. In this paper, we describe a toolchain of three connected tools to design and monitor custom Post-WIMP interactors using model-based user interface design (MBUID) methods. We use state charts and mappings as the basic modeling technique. Different to other MBUID approaches our models are get created to specify the behavior of existing widgets. These models are then used to attach further control modes and connect interactors using mappings. We explain the toolchain by an interactive music sheet web application that can be controlled by head movements to turn the sheets.

Nowadays the web is an ubiquitously available source of information that can be accessed through a broad range of devices, such as smart phones, tablets and notebooks. Although web applications can be used through several devices, they are controlled and designed for a one-to-one connection type of interaction, which prevents device-spanning multi-modal interactions. We propose a model-based run-time framework to design and execute multi-modal interfaces for the web. Different to a model-based design that implements reification, a process to derive concrete models from abstract ones by transformation, we design interactors that keep all design models alive at run-time. Interactors are based on finite state machines that can be inspected and manipulated at run-time and are synchronized over different devices and modalities using mappings. We show the expressiveness of state charts for modeling interactions, interaction resources, and interaction paradigms. We proof our approach by checking its conformance against common requirements for multimodal frameworks, classify it based on characteristics identified by others, and present initial results of a performance analysis.

Our daily life is full of activities: working, cooking, cleaning, driving are just some of them. While performing these activities our communicating capabilities are limited since most of our senses are blocked by the main activity. Thus we cannot benefit from accessing the computer or using our hands and eyes for driving or our voice for talking to other people. In this paper we invest into enabling and designing human-computer interaction in situations where common modes of communication fail. Therefore we allow controlling an interface just by using head movements and propose a model-based interface design that enables to design and implement such interactions. As a proof of concept we explain our approach based on a natural interface for a musician that we have implemented. It enables to turn music sheets just by head movements.

The gesture-based control of interfaces could enable interaction in situations where hardware controls are missing and support impaired people where other controls fail. The rich spectrum of combining hand postures with movements offers great interaction possibilities but requires extensive user testing to figure out an optimal control with a sufficient control performance and a low error rate. In this paper we describe a declarative, model-based gesture navigation design based on state charts that can be used for the rapid generation of different prototypes to accelerate user testing and comparison of different interaction controls. We use the declarative modeling to design and generate several variants of a gesture-based interface navigation control. The models are described using state charts and are transformed to state machines at system runtime. They can be directly executed to form a multimodal interaction.

In this paper we describe a model-based interface design based on assembling interactors and multimodal mappings to design multimodal interfaces. We propose to use state charts for the rapid generation of different user interface controls to accelerate user testing. First we describe how our approach can be applied to design direct manipulation interfaces that rely on a mouse-based interface control. Then we present how we applied the interactor based design to quickly generate several variants of a gesture-based interface navigation control to demonstrate our approach. We comparethe three most promising variants in a user test and report about the test results.

The development of Augmented Reality (AR) applications is still driven by development at source-code level. Although recent approaches focus to standardize AR functionality, to our knowledge a declarative and model-driven design (MDD) has not been applied for AR development so far. MDD approaches have been successfully applied to model user interfaces for a wide spectrum of modes (such as speech- command interfaces, or remote controls) and media such as HTML, 3D, and smart phone interfaces for instance. In this paper we propose a MDD approach for modeling seamless interaction between Web and AR interfaces. Therefore we implemented a prototype of a web furniture shop that supports arranging furniture in an augmented reality to prove our approach. We then present our approach of modeling a reality spanning Drag-and-Drop interaction between a 2D browser and an AR scene. Finally, we discuss the issues that we were confronted with to support reality spanning interaction like switching interaction modes and coordinate systems and present limitations that we have experienced with using other control modes, like a Wii-Controller or glove-based gesture detection.

The company Flutterwave is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States. In 2016, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Olugbenga Agboola, and Adeleke Adekoya established Flutterwave. It offers a payment infrastructure to international merchants and payment service providers throughout Africa. The company operates in various African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, and others. They focus on digital payments, helping businesses accept and process payments on various channels like the web, mobile, ATM, and POS. Recently, they’ve been in the news due to allegations of misconduct within the company, which has affected their reputation and value. Flutterwave is an essential player in the African fintech landscape, aiming to drive growth for banks and businesses through digital payment solutions. The Flutterwave scandal involves allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour towards female employees by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola. Reports have surfaced from both current and former employees about bullying, intimidation, and sexual harassment at work. The allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards female employees at Flutterwave, specifically involving the CEO Olugbenga Agboola, were brought to public attention in April 2022.This was when Clara Wanjiku Odero, an ex-employee and current CEO of Credrails, published a Medium post and a series of tweets on April 4, 2022, accusing Flutterwave and Agboola of bullying. These allegations were part of a broader range of misconduct claims that surfaced around the same time The reasons behind the scandal are rooted in accusations of unethical behavior within the company. The allegations suggest a workplace culture that allowed for misconduct and failed to protect employees from harassment and intimidation. Specifically, the Flutterwave scandal refers to the series of events where the CEO was accused of engaging in improper conduct with female colleagues. This led to a broader investigation into the company’s practices and raised serious concerns about the fintech’s corporate governance. The scandal had significant repercussions, including a drop in the company’s stock price and a loss of trust among customers and partners. The trust that customers and investors had in Flutterwave was greatly damaged. People started to doubt the company’s integrity and whether their money and personal information were safe. Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
