In the first semester, instruction is
bilingual (Spanish/ English) and
focused on safety and foundational
technical skills.
ESL follows the wood tech curriculum
and activates
students’ English
skills in context.
5. Second Semester
Students focus on operating
computerized machinery, and
developing professional job skills.
Instruction is primarily in English,
with Spanish language support by
classmates. Technical vocabulary,
computer skills, workplace
communications, and customer
service.
6. Team of Instructors: First
Semester
Rosendo Deltoro is a graduate of
Laney’s Woodworking Program with
many years of industry experience.
Saul Montoya brings his long
experience as manager of a wood
shop to the Carpinteria Fina
program.
Daniel DeYoung, longtime ESL
instructor and bilingual educator,
provides instruction in English with
Spanish language support.
7. Team of Instructors: Second
Semester
Myron Franklin B.F.A. is department
chair of the Laney Wood Technology
Program and the Carpinteria Fina
Program Director, with 20 years of
industry experience.
Sonja Franeta, ESL instructor and
former industry machinist, is an
advocate for immigrant students and
a proponent of contextualized
teaching and learning.
8. Continuing Education
Students improve professional skills
operating state-of-the-art
equipment, focusing on computer
aided design and machining.
The department offers CAD CAM
classes which teach advanced
computer assisted design and
manufacturing (WDTCH 30,40).
