Collaborative Media Studio
               reTHINK PSU
Proposed
• Media studio capable of streaming and
  recording high fidelity audio and video
• Capability for interactive video conferencing
  allows remote coaching for music master
  classes, private lessons, small ensemble
  coaching, sectional rehearsals, etc.
• Useful for music, theater, dance, and sports,
  where coaching is dependent on subtle audio
  and visual cues.
The Context
• Music instruction depends on demonstrations
  and critique of performance
• Professional training for oboists and
  bassoonists is highly specialized involving
  reed-making, instrument maintenance, and
  maintenance and use of reed making tools
• Reed-making is absolutely critical for double
  reed players to master, a necessity in order to
  be an accomplished player
Double Reed Instruction
• The secret of the perfect reed (YouTube)
• Reed and performance technique delivered
  via a weekly f2f “studio class”
• Due to required courses in the major, general
  ed, and work and family obligations, it can be
  difficult for double reed students to attend the
  studio class
Media Studio
• High fidelity video and audio collaboration is
  now possible
• Manhattan School of Music testimonial
Media Studio and Server
• High fidelity video and audio collaboration
  promises to be valuable for collaborative
  professional development, theater, sports,
  teaching critique, etc.
• Recorded sessions can be provided in a
  learning object repository so students and
  others can revisit the examples
Learning Object Server
• Students could upload their own
  performances to receive feedback from
  teachers and peers
• Text, audio or video annotations would allow
  an interactive critique that would provide rich
  feedback that approaches the fidelity of face-
  to-face coaching.
Other Possibilities
• Media studio useful for any instructor or
  student preparing demonstrations where
  visual and auditory richness is necessary
• Language learning, coaching, theater, dance,
  etc. all could benefit.
• Studio can act as a collaborative space that
  closely approximates face-to-face meetings for
  faculty and staff
