7. DEFINITION
• The term bogan is Australian and New Zealand English slang
•term for a person who is, or is perceived to be, of a lower-class
background and, according to the stereotype, the speech and
mannerisms of „bogans‟ indicate poor education, cheap clothing and
uncultured upbringing
•'Bogans' usually live in lower socio-economical areas (often
outer metropolitan) or rural areas eg. Midland

housing estate, and likes to harass other citizens with colourful language
and/or by decorating their front garden with miscellaneous motor vehicle
components.

Stereotypically a bogan can be summarised;
•white.
•Poor and living in public housing.
•unintelligent, uneducated, anti-intellectual.
•culturally blue-collar: having the 'broad'
Australian accent associated with poorer and
rural white people

broadened to include hiphop, rap and rock such

•Pink
•Nickelback

23. WHAT DO BOGANS DO WITH
THEIR TIME?
• Aussie bogans live by the „ work hard, party
hard‟ ethic
• they believe working hard gives them the right
to party hard, and thus the majority of their
free time is spent in bars or wherever alcohol is
served
•Its not entirely true that all Bogans are
violent, mindless, drugged-up alcoholics with a
love for „flannos‟....... However, most of them
are.

25. BOGAN LOVE
• Aussie bogans tend to NOT discuss their
love lifes very openly
•Bogan men are also obsessive womanisers
•will often two-time or even flirt openly with
other women in front of their girlfriends
without any sense of guilt.
•This is partly because of them not
understanding it's wrong but also
because they plainly don't give a f%#!

27. WHAT DO BOGANS EAT?
•ACCORDING TO BOGANS ALCOHOL
IS A LEGITIMATE PART OF A
DIET, OFTEN USING THE TERM
„BREAKFAST BEER‟
•Cask wine, or goon as it is more commonly
known, is popular for its low cost and large
quantity.
•Other forms of cheap wine such as 'Passion Pop'
are a popular beverage for the younger Bogan (8–
14 years of age) and is traditionally the very
first drink they get inebriated from.

29. WHAT DO BOGANS EAT?
•Known for eating large amounts of
takeaway food eg. Hj‟s, maccas, kfc
Other forms of Bogan foods are;
•Meat pies
•Frozen pizzas
• quick noodles, „mi goreng‟ being a popular choice
of 39c a packet
Everything is also covered in tomato sauce

about other cultures
•They are proud “AUSSIES” and tend
to be ignorant of, or plain dislike
other cultures

32. „BOGAN SPEAK‟
• The Bogan accent is highly distinguishable
• high-pitched
• Similar to quot;ocker“
• relies heavily upon abbreviated words and profanity.
• typically use the phrase quot;yousquot; referring to two or more people
• modify people's names by adding quot;-zzaquot; (ie Barry = Bazza, Sharon
= Shazza).
•Alternitively use the same vowel sound on either side of a
consonant sound eg. quot;Robertquot; becomesquot;Robboquot; and quot;Williamquot;
would be pronounced quot;Willyquot;.
• typically very fond of saying 'Fakkin oath cant' and 'Fack ap
cant'.

Back in the day, heroes of the bogans
were musicians like ACDC.
However today, with all the technology
that exists, the bogan youth culture idolise
characters such as „devvo‟ off „youtube‟
(www.youtube.com)

Devvo is Darren Devonshire, a youth from
the „hood‟. Devvo lets a cameraman follow
him around and film his life in exchange
for cigarettes, alcohol and small change
More recently he has used his internet
fame to further his life-long dream of
being a rap superstar, performing live gigs
all over the UK.

However, in the days when „gen y‟ „rule‟
society, the culture is becoming and more
widespread.
As a mix of the aussie „larikin‟ nature, and
the nature of „ gen y‟ to „want
everything‟, Young Bogans dont have such a
great reputation in society.
However, from my own personal
experience, we arent that bad, and all in all
we are just like other youngins from other
groups... All we wanna do is have fun.
