Reflection 1
In this reflection, I will self-reflect my work experience that has helped build my
understanding and employability rate of the media industry. I will also explain numerous
ways I have increased my chances of employability and opportunities I could get from my
employability project where I created my own opportunities by undertaking various projects
that can help raise my chances of getting employed in this industry. This writing is to reflect
critically to demonstrate my personal development and capability in the media industry.
First, I will start with original projects I have created for different aspects of media some in
collaboration with my peers at university or college. I produced a fifteen-minute short film
with a group of people called Isolation. This project took a lot of planning and time to create
a narrative that will also help show our creativity on the technical side as well. Each was
tasked to a specific role so, for example, I was tasked with being the sound engineer and co-
scriptwriter. I did a lot of research on what particular sound we should use for our film as
well as learned and tested all sound equipment from the AV store that would best fit our
production. I also did most of the post-production and finalizing the movie. This helped me
boost my technical skills a lot, as I learned various filmequipment that I never used before
such as the audio adapter, microphones, and such. This has helped me understand the
industry more as most projects and jobs in the industry involve producing and filming media
texts and understanding how to use certain equipment will make me employable as the
equipment I learned to handle can be used in radio, journalism and other recording
productions. I also did independent research on the process of production on how to create
a narrative and looked at many examples setting up meetings regularly with my
collaborators, I think this shows my initiative and ability to assess things independently but
also working with others. This a valuable skill to have as most jobs in the industry a
collaborative with others but also dependent on the person getting the job done. I learned
how to operate accordingly in a professional media like environment, which I think, makes
me employable for this particular industry. Reflecting on this project I would also wish I had
entered our short film in the filmfestival contest even if our film was not great compared to
others. This would have given me and my peers an idea on how filmmaking is part of this
industry was and given me first-hand experience in getting an original film out in the
industry. This has also benefited me as I may have gotten different opportunities that would
enhance my experience and skills more from that short film.
Reflection 2
Furthermore, as part of my employability project, I autonomously created a twenty-minute
screenplay that helped gave me a writers experience to this industry and better chances of
my career aspirations of working in the filmsection of the media industry. This project gave
me the tools to create a good script but also introduced me to various concepts around
scriptwriting and helped developed my creative writing skills. I learned how to create a
script using the correct layout and learned the process this makes me more employable as I
have experience on creating narrative scripts as screenplays are used all the time in the
media industry. This experience has also given me the ability to create any types of scripts
for different production if needed when I am employed something associate with
scriptwriting. Also entered my script to the Aesthetica film festival where I built more of a
presence for myself so employers can find me and maybe could get more experience in the
industry. Unfortunately, this did not happen but gained valuable feedback from professional
scriptwriting on my script to help improve my ability of writing giving me more confidence
to try again In the future. This shows my initiative again by independently applying to the
contest and showing tenacity on trying to improve my skills to enter again. If I were to
change something that would have helped my employability, I would have helped giving
feedback to other scripts. Helping others might have helped me learned new ideas and
improvement to my script as having more than one perspective can help me see issues I
could not. Attending to more feedback groups with other scriptwriters like me enhances me
being more flexible and team player, which I think, is valuable increasing chances of being
employed.
In addition, I have also created my own blog on the website blogger in my leisure time
posting numerous topics about different media texts relating to this industry as well as
writing about the filmindustry itself. In my blog, I have made writing posts about film
reviews, analysis on movie franchises, my experiences and thoughts as a student of this
course, discussion on upcoming movies and such. Just like the filmfestival, this also helps
build an online presence for me as a writer and journalist for this industry. It makes me
easier to find as the internet can be accessed by employers around the world that can give
me different opportunities maybe even travelling which is a big career aspiration of mine as
this industry is not necessarily set in one location. I am more employable as it shows off my
creative writing skills and knowledge I have of the industry already. Also listing key skills
Reflection 3
such as adaptable to the media environment, satisfactory grammar, technical
communication skills and such. I think I am safe to say that most of this industry is
digitalized and almost every aspect involves technology and devices. Being proficient on the
computer and traversing thought different writing application and intensive research on the
web makes me more employable and helps my understanding of the industry more from
research. I am also a CEO consultancy and blogged for the website Daily Manchester News
as my college teacher is the CEO. This gives me connections to opportunities making me
more employable but also having his email I receive different advice from him about
business in the media industry, which is valuable knowledge that could help me understand
more. If I were to do the blog, again I would expand my content more instead just writing
about topical movies. This would make me more noticeable to different groups of people.
Moreover, I have attended a number of media talks and lectures at the university by people
who have worked in the filmindustry for a number of years and explain their process and
experiences working professionally. In general, these lecture talks provide fascinating insight
and knowledge to the industry and helps my understanding more. They also sometimes
provide opportunities for me depending on what the talk is about and hearing advice from
people who have spent years in the industry is beneficial to me. For example, more
specifically I went to a lecture by film and sound editor Walter Murch who has spent
plentiful years in the film industry and collaborated with other high profiled filmmakers.
Hearing his theories on cinema and experiences in producing movies helps my
understanding of the industry and how it was in the past. Specifically how he helped create
big budget movies. Also as part of my employability project, I conducted online research on
how to get into the industry then setting action plans for the holidays and upcoming
academic year to increase my chances. I have also done other research in my leisure time on
my interests such as animation, comics, acting, games and such. I watch and read numerous
of hour-long interviews and behind the scenes of these subjects. This helps me understand
the industry more and gives me the motivation to do different things and seeing how these
media texts are created as well as their advice gives me proper preparation on the industry.
Equally important I also have an extensive portfolio of similar work I have mentioned such
as a music video, radio show, charity stop-motion movie, profile feature articles and more.
Also doing theory work on each of those helps build my understanding of what the industry
Reflection 4
might want from me when I get a job. While building, researching and adding to my
portfolio, that makes me standout and employable as I will have more of a chance and
opportunity to get a job from the employer seeing my skills produce different projects in my
portfolio. One thing I reflect on that would’ve helped my employability and that I can still do
now is to make my CV more creative and unique. My resume gives the first impression to
employers that will give them a prospective decision, by changing simple designs like the
layout or having a second pair of eyes to give feedback especially a teacher a person who
works in the industry can increase my chances greatly of being employed.
To conclude, the media industry is made up of many sectors, it employs significant numbers
of graduates in creative roles and I could list more projects I’ve done but I think the next
step is to apply to more internships and schemes that can give me actual working
experience that independent projects couldn’t give me. I have applied to numerous
opportunities in the past but failed to get in however with the projects I’ve done I can now
build up my CV with these experiences and have a higher chance of getting a placement. I
think as a student of this industry I’ve developed a lot in terms of skills and understanding,
doing different projects gives me a wide range of skill and experience. In the end, I think I
have an average experience record compared to other people like me trying to be
employed.

Moreover, I have attended a number of media talks and lectures at the university by people who have worked in the filmindustry for a number of years and explain their process and experiences working professionally. In general, these lecture talks provide fascinating insight and knowledge to the industry and helps my understanding more. They also sometimes provide opportunities for me depending on what the talk is about and hearing advice from people who have spent years in the industry is beneficial to me. For example, more specifically I went to a lecture by film and sound editor Walter Murch who has spent plentiful years in the film industry and collaborated with other high profiled filmmakers. Hearing his theories on cinema and experiences in producing movies helps my understanding of the industry and how it was in the past. Specifically how he helped create big budget movies. Also as part of my employability project, I conducted online research on how to get into the industry then setting action plans for the holidays and upcoming academic year to increase my chances. I have also done other research in my leisure time on my interests such as animation, comics, acting, games and such. • 4. Reflection 4 might want from me when I get a job. While building, researching and adding to my portfolio, that makes me standout and employable as I will have more of a chance and opportunity to get a job from the employer seeing my skills produce different projects in my portfolio. One thing I reflect on that would’ve helped my employability and that I can still do now is to make my CV more creative and unique. My resume gives the first impression to employers that will give them a prospective decision, by changing simple designs like the layout or having a second pair of eyes to give feedback especially a teacher a person who works in the industry can increase my chances greatly of being employed. To conclude, the media industry is made up of many sectors, it employs significant numbers of graduates in creative roles and I could list more projects I’ve done but I think the next step is to apply to more internships and schemes that can give me actual working experience that independent projects couldn’t give me. I have applied to numerous opportunities in the past but failed to get in however with the projects I’ve done I can now build up my CV with these experiences and have a higher chance of getting a placement. I think as a student of this industry I’ve developed a lot in terms of skills and understanding, doing different projects gives me a wide range of skill and experience. In the end, I think I have an average experience record compared to other people like me trying to be employed.
