2. EARLY CHILDHOOD
Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) was born on March 2,
1904. His first home was at 74 Fairfield St.,
Springfield, Massachusetts.
Ted’s and his family lived near the local
library and zoo.
He drew a lot of pictures of the animals while
he was at the zoo.
He loved to read and write stories.
He thought his neighbors were interesting
3. EDUCATION
In high school he was voted Class Artist and
Class Wit
His English teacher encouraged him to apply
to Dartmouth College.
At Dartmouth he wrote for the school
newspaper.
After graduation, he went to Oxford for a
short time, before deciding to following his
dreams of becoming a writer and illustrator.
4. ADULT LIFE/CAREER
He sent his cartoons to New York magazines
hoping to get published.
He started signing his work Dr. Seuss.
After a young boy asked for his autograph,
he wondered if he should be writing children
book’s.
He worked for an advertising agency, making
a lot of money. This allowed him to have time
to write his books.
5. ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Dr. Seuss’ are the most famous children’s
books.
3 of his most popular books are “The Cat in
the Hat”, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”
and “Green Eggs and Ham”.
He was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize.
His books have sold millions of copies.
6. IMPACT ON THE WORLD
Dr. Seuss gave children the love of reading.
He gave money to libraries, art museums,
scholarship funds, charities and zoos.
7. DATE OF DEATH
Dr. Seuss died on September 24, 1991 at the
age of 87. In Springfield today, you can visit
the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture
Garden.
