  1. It’s after six and you’re exhausted. You’ve had a rough day at the office, and then reached to pick up the kids and now have to make supper. But the children are milling around and demanding your attention so you turn on the TV to keep them occupied.And that how your Kids become included in the statistics of the 40 percent of South African children who have little or no moderate to energetic exercise. Girls from age 16 to 19 and children from disadvantaged communities are especially inactive.For increasing numbers of children the days if riding their bicycles around the neighbourhood or playing cricket in the street are long gone. Safety consideration and the lure of the internet, TV and the computer games have seen to that.A report by Discovery medical fund and the Sport Science Institute of South Africa, teens watch TV for more than three hours a day. And that doesn’t include time spent on the cellphones or TV games.“There’s a conspicuous lack of physical activity and the participation in sport among teens especially. More than one in four teens have little or no interest in Sport,” says the report, titled Healthy Active Kids South Africa Report CardIt’s found more than 30 percent of teenage girls and the 10 percent of teenage boys are overweight or obese. The pattern is much the same for primary school kids, the 22 percent of girls and 17 percent of boys being overweight or obese.The problem is made worse by the poor eating habits of many South African children. Only 58 percent eat more than four serving of fruit and vegetables a week.

Their children watch TV for up to seven hours a day on weekends, Kathy McQuaide of the Sports Science Institute says.“Obesity is an international phenomenon. If we don’t do something about kids’ inactivity now we’re heading the same way as America,” says Dr Craig Nossel who heads up Discovery Vitality Wellness division.

Never underestimate the importance of exercise, says Bruce Smuts of Active Education, an organisation that has trained coaches who offer various sporting activities at primary and secondary schools.The results speak for themselves. The body mass index, body fat, height and weight of two groups of primary school children in Cape Town and the Gauteng were recorded before and after kids from one group completed an 11 week activity programme. The kids in this group showed an increase in muscle weight, they were more motivated and enthusiastic and teachers found their concentration had improved after completing the programme, Smuts says, But it’s largely parents’ responsibility to ensure kids become more active. Children younger than 12 should be active at least an hour a day, although it needn’t be in one go. Teens should do at least 20 minutes high-intensity training three times a week and the 30 minutes moderate training on the other days.Because most parents work full time its hard finding time to be active with your kids but parents should set an example.Parents often complain their kids aren’t active. Children needn’t excel at sport; they must simply be active.There is a solution to the excelling problem we have today.“We should invest in our kids’ health the same way we invest in their education” he says.

And just like their parents, kids today are turning to Yoga to help them relax.Teaching Yoga to children, I've seen how Yoga helps them develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility and coordination. I've also seen how they can carry these skills beyond class and into their daily routines.Yoga has also been shown to help the hyperactive and attention-deficit child. These children crave movement and sensory/motor stimulus. Yoga helps channel these impulses in a positive way. Yoga poses that seem to work especially well are the warrior pose and tree pose. They help instil calm, confidence and balance. The trick is to get beyond just "doing" the posture. I try to get them to think about what the postures mean to become like the postures -- strong and confident like a warrior.
  8. DancingSince dancing provides entertainment as well as good physical and mental health, so more and more number of persons should learn some form of dancing and enjoy the benefits. Dancing is not only fun and a great way to socialize, mix, and mingle, but it's also a good way to stay physically fit. Exercise doesn't have to be utter drudgery, especially when you can dance your way to health. It's a mild form of exercise for the heart. It's much more pleasurable than walking and probably much more thorough because it involves the entire body. Dance 30 minutes continuously and you will burn 200 to 400 calories, the same as walking, swimming, or cycling. Dance enables strong bones, mental fitness and is therapeutic.
