The document discusses plans for a new music magazine focused on rock and indie genres. It will target teenagers and young adults interested in meaningful music. The magazine will include gossip, artist biographies, and interviews with ordinary fans. Colors and images on the cover will aim to set the mood associated with rock and indie music. A unique selling point will be interviews with fan opinions and creative contests for readers. The magazine will be published monthly to allow quality content while maintaining readership interest and necessity.
1. Genre
The type of music magazine I would like to create is a Magazine that revolves around the genres of Indie and Rock.
This is due to the massive fan base that these music genres carry which would mean more people would find my
music genre attractive leading to high sales when I first realise my magazine. I would like to have Rock as the main
focus of my music which would then be followed by Indie as a sub genre for my magazine because I feel Indie is a
genre that contains numerous aspects that Rock already conducts to its audience. Rock music consists of the
instruments that Indie share as well. For instance guitars, base and drums are shared between the two types of
genres. However Indie music take this to the next level by using more melodic instruments like a violin or piano to
enhance their music and strike emotion from audiences. From my own experience with different types of music, I
find I am more attracted to Rock or Indie due to the heavy messages the lyrics and sounds provide. Additionally
Indie and rock step away from the mainstream music that is constantly played of radio stations like Capital. Having
Indie/Rock as the genres for my magazine would attract people who see a deeper meaning in music rather than
the electronic and repeated music that is over played by a niche audience.
Music magazines who enhance these genres, like Indie and Rolling Stones Magazine both contain elements that
entertain and keep the readers attached to the individual magazines. This is done by various methods like getting
the artist who is featured in the magazine to praise the music magazine on their social media page which would
result in the fans purchasing that particular magazine due to their loyalty. Furthermore fans of Rock and Indie
music contain an emotional attachment with the artists and their music due to a sob story or background they
might have which made them write these particular songs that are prised by the fans. This is because fans are able
to relate to something that’s happened in their own lifetime through the songs and music themselves.
2. Target Audience
Demographics
• Gender- Both
• Age- 16-25
• Income- Unemployed,
Students, casual workers
• Race- Any
• Location- Places where
media widely used
Overall my target audience are teenagers and young adults who are
specifically interested in a deeper level of music rather than just the basis of a
“upright beat” that most niche audiences look for. My target audience are
people who are drawn to meaning and inspiration conducted through the
music they listen to. In some ways my target audience proves a much harder
challenge when it comes to attracting their attention to read my magazine
that a fan of pop would have. In order to grab Rock and Indie lovers, I would
have to convey strong audience identification in my front cover therefore
meaning I would have to conduct research into what typical Indie and Rock
fans look for in their magazines. Due to the production of a music magazine, it
is extremely I am able to reach and go beyond what my audience expectations
would be before reading my magazine. By achieving this, my magazine would
provide a unique taste to my audiences which would result in them having
interest in it.
3. Similar Magazines
Magazines that are similar the outlook of my magazine are those that have a massive, eye-catching logo at the very top of
the magazine with bold white masthead. The magazines included on this slide ( Kerrang, Q, Rock folk and Rock are music
magazines that I would like to roughly interpret while adding my own unique ideas to my magazine. For instance, Kerrang
magazine conducts, on the magazine on the bottom right of this slide, contains massive, bold, white writing positioned on
the middle left of the page saying “Green Day” which Billy Joel Armstrong's bang name (the artists featuring on the front
page of the magazine. This type of writing definitely would grab the eye of my target audience as it resembles Kerrang’s
traditional non sans serif font which is always added in their magazines. By resembling the font of writing I use in my
magazine to Kerrang's, I provide my target audience with a safe feeling which would result in the purchasing my magazine.
However I need to be careful not to take too many ideas from one particular magazine (like Kerrang) as this could lead to loss
of uniqueness and a copy right feel from my target audience which might deter them from purchasing my magazine
4. Frequency
Publishing my magazine weekly and monthly both contains benefits and drawbacks that would effect the publicity
and sales. Publishing my magazine weekly would highlight that all my articles are fresh and new which would draw
target audiences who enjoy keeping up with the gossip concerning their favourite artists. However this is a draw
back as I would have to spend more money and have a larger workforce in order to gain information on gossip and
new stories. Additionally it doesn’t seem like a wise decision for a magazine that is newly being launched.
Publishing my magazine monthly would allow me to have a smaller work force to help me retrieve information on
stories or gossip. This means that gaining sorties wouldn’t be rushed allowing the quality of my magazine to greatly
improve. Furthermore fans of my magazine would treat my magazine as a necessity to purchase as it only comes
one a month which would increase the amount of people who buy magazine. However having a monthly issued
magazine would mean that my stories would be a bit outdated which would audiences who would’ve already
covered the stories on my magazine through other weekly published magazines. Overall I think I would follow a
monthly published magazine as it means I would be able to cover a much thicker context in my magazine due to
the long amounts of time I would have dedicated to the magazine. Furthermore my magazine would also include
entertaining facts about the music industry that the reader can keep and re read throughout the month until my
next magazine is published. In fact they could keep my magazine as a magazine in which they read throughout the
whole month due to the large amounts of information and facts being provided. This increased the readers
connection with my magazine as they would feel more connected and attracted to my magazine as it would
eventually be something that is trustworthy and safe for the reader to read.
5. Content
The content of my magazine will consist of the everyday magazine essentials like gossip of various artists and
bands. This is needed as it would keep the connection of the reader to the music industry. I will also include
biographies of various artists in my magazine with a mix of in formal and formal language used to highlight
that the magazine contrasts from being laid back and honest, to serious and down to business. The ‘down to
business’ side will need to be shown in my magazine so my target audience don't get mislead into thinking
that my magazine isn't professional in the media magazine. Regardless of that, I want to call out to the
individuals reading my magazine and give off the effect that the magazine and themselves are both on the
same level. This can be achieved by stating issues or problems that my target audience would be able to
relate to. Furthermore I would also add use of language like slang or swear words that y target audience
would associate with to highlight a change in emotion or when talking about something highly passionate.
6. Mood/Values of My Magazine
Moods are extremely important in a magazine as it highlights the
present or future mood that the person reading my magazine would
consist of. This means it is hugely vital that my magazine consists of a
mood that Indie and Rock music convey well as this is a huge factor as
to why my target audience are attracted to this type of music.
Concerning my front cover, I'm thinking of placing a clear view of
different instruments as the gift of Indie and Rock music conducts all
the instruments (such as bass, guitar ect..) in their songs. Therefore
having these instruments shown on my front cover would cause a
similar mood that an Indie or Rock fan would experience whilst
listening to their music. Additionally colours are also an important
aspect is transferring a positive mood towards my target audience.
The type of colours I would have on my magazine would be a various
depending on the mood I am trying to give off in each page. This
means there wouldn't be a colour scheme consisted in my magazine
like other Rock or Indie magazines. This would reflect positive
impression from my target audience as it connotes that my magazine
consists of new and fresh stories each time it gets published. The
colours I would most likely use for my magazine would be Black,
Green, Blue, white, red and brown. This is because of the different
emotions it would reflect off my magazine as shown on the mood
table on the left.
7. Unique Selling Point
My unique selling point of my magazine would be interviews of normal
individuals who are fans of Indie and Rock music. These interviewers would
contain information purely on opinions about Indie and Rock music and the
gossip that is going on in the music industry. The interview would be won by
use of creative minds by competitors producing a CD cover or a song that the
artist that will be featured in the exciting event, would use for their upcoming
albums or singles. These unique selling points are aimed at making the target
audience feel as involved as they can with my magazine which would result in
them growing a strong connection with my magazine. I think its the feeling my
magazine gives of to different audiences which enables them to see it as
unique. If my magazine portrays emotions that is the same as another
magazine then it would not be seen as being unique.
