This is a wonderful opportu-
nity for me to write about the
School of Architecture on the
occasion of the release of its
annual newsletter “MOSAIC”.
While there were no schools
of architecture in Coimbatore
earlier, today a handful of
school are working hard to
make an impact.

India’s economic growth is only sustainable
with the equivalent infrastructure. Presently
the growing demand is not been met by the
crumbling infrastructure, such as road net-
works, city transport, water & Sanitation etc.
This requires a massive enlargement of urban
infrastructure. The massive amount of fund
(Rs 1292.37 Billion) has been made available
to improve upon the basic services in the 60
major cities of India.
The massive infrastructure development dis-
cussed in JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru Nation-
al Urban Renewal Mission) most of which talk
about clean and green technologies) a large
scope of architectural profession in India ex-
ists at present.
India has a plenty of resources for green
building moreover Indian climate and econo-
my is suitable for such constructions. We re-
quire dedicated departments in the architec-
ture schools/Engineering colleges on “Green
Buildings” or “Green Architecture”.
The conventional Architect does not fit into
the shoe of “Green Architect”. A green Ar-
chitect will essentially have the knowledge
about the all the aspects like; effect to hu-
man health, environmental impact, loss of re-
sources, waste, air/water/indoor pollution,
Still, green architect is a new profession so it is not possible
to identify and quantify green architectural professionals in
India. However, a few institutions have started to offer short
term courses on green architect. As projections show emerg-
ing demand of green construction in India and present pau-
city of architect professional will result gap in future.
It may further widen if proper policies are not devised in the
directions. Therefore, Ministry of Rural Development and Ur-
ban Planning must take initiatives in designing appropriate
course in green architecture. Karpagam University’s Archi-
tecture school is young with capable teachers to take up this
task of popularizing Green buildings. History records the
drawidian contribution in temple, cave and ship architecture.
School of Architecture should take a lead in this and the cli-
mate of 12 hr sunshine and average 37 C temperature will be
always available for this technology to cherish and enjoy.
I wish the second Congress of the Karpagam’s School of Ar-
chitecture to succeed in its goal.

energy/water/material consumption; while designing a build-
ing. This will essentially require our architect schools to have
massive expansion in terms of faculty and course develop-
ment. A significant gap exist between intake capacity and reg-
istered professionals It is a matter of concern which needs
attention of the policy makers.

Dear Reader,
Welcome to the inaugural an-
nual edition of the “MOSAIC”

for the School of Architec-
ture, Karpagam University. I
am sure that this will be the
first of the successive yearly
newsletters to connect the

ple in the same profession in
the city. On behalf of the In-
dian Institute of Architects
Coimbatore Centre (IIA-CC),
I congratulate the manage-
ment, staff and students for
successfully entering the sec-
ond academic year.
We would also like to strengthen the Aca-
demia - Institution interaction for mutual
benefit.
I offer a sincere thanks to all of you who have
made various contributions to help support
the activities of IIA-CC. We look forward to
your continued contributions.
My best wishes to the entire team for making
the Regional Design Symposium ”OBLIQUE
-the design angle” a grand success.

Dear Friends,
All praise to the Almighty, with whose grace
we have successfully entered into our sec-
ond year, and whose help we seek to per-
form and preserve success.
The past year has been hectic yet fun-filled
for everyone at the school. The honorable
Chancellor’s vision and tremendous support
from the University management in provid-
ing infrastructure and motivation has kindled
all of us to deliver our best efforts. Needless
to say, strong financial support as well.
High academic standards, state of the art
curriculum, good and accessible library, ex-
cellent faculty, daily staff lunches, diverse
Faculty members participated in several seminars, work-
shops and conferences in new and emerging areas besides
frequently organizing some as well. The visiting faculty has
become stronger with the addition of a practicing structural
engineer to the team.
A regional design symposium “Oblique - the design angle” is
scheduled for the second week of November 2010 when this
students, tests and assignments, frequent
guest lectures, industry collaboration, site
visits, industrial visits, educational tours,
case studies, expos and exhibitions, design
reviews, club activities, events and semi-
nars, workshops and symposiums, broad-
band wi-fi, club activities, birthday parties,
football matches and fun, creativity and in-
novation are slowly turning default.
This is just the first step, there is a long way
to go.
Our students did very well in many events
including the recent zonasa and also man-
aged to send a decent entry for the ANDC. An
educational tour to TamilNadu and Pondich-
erry last semester enlightened them not only
about the architecture of the region, but also
of the rich culture and social life of the
people.
newsletter is also planned for release. Being the first of its
kind in South India, we hope it would be a good forum to dis-
cuss design especially in the architectural context. We also
hope it will be an initiator for the other schools in the region
to organize this symposium on a rotational format.
This is just the first step, there is a long way to go.
We must adopt academic standards which will set the highest
benchmarks for architectural education and practice in this
region. This requires collaborated effort and understanding,
strong commitment and mutual respect from all the stake
holders.
Success I believe, comes not from doing just what is required,
but by achieving substantially much more, and gradually. Let
us come together to raise this school with all our might.
We sincerely would like to appreciate the efforts of all those
directly and indirectly involved in building this school, brick
by brick. Commendations to the Editor of the newsletter and
her team for their tremendous effort in putting together its
first edition.
This is just the first step, there is a long way to go. May the
Almighty show us the way!

INTRODUCTION:
It is recognized that water problems
cannot be solved by quick technical solu-
tions; solutions to water problems require the
consideration of cultural, educational,

communication and scientific aspects.
SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT-THE SCI-
ENCE NEED:
	 Water is a‘landscape agent’and is
involved in a number of interdependent
processes including; soil erosion, transport
nutrients and pollutants, providing habitat
for aquatic biota, provides a connective net-
work with in the landscape. The purpose of
Sustainable Water Management is simply to
manage our water resources.
SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT IN
INDIA:
How will India avert the looming crisis? For
India, the two most important issues are
how to balance the country’s rapid economic
growth with the need to ensure equitable
distribution to all sectors, in particular the
urban and rural drinking water supply. It is
estimated that about 21% of communicable
disease in India is water related.
NEED FOR INTEGRATION OF HYGIENE, SANI-
TATION AND WATER QUALITY INTERVENTION:
Although the burden of diarrhea disease
resulting from inadequate water quality,
sanitation practice and hygiene remains
high, there is little understanding of the
integration of these environmental control
strategies. Sanitation and hygiene are often
perceived as social and behavioral issues and
water quality as a technical issue requiring
technical intervention.
CONCLUSION:
An ecological approach has to be followed to
introduce complementary engineering inputs
with planning skills. A conservation and
restoration is a step towards preparing the
framework for short long term management
in urban areas, the next phase should harp
and embark on water based urban growth.28

Are you looking to build a better and effective building?
Want to make better building in quick time? Then build-
ing construction drawings are the right alternative to
use. It contains so much important information regarding
buildings.
Using them, one can easily construct a better building
structure in a shorter time period.
Building construction drawings are developed using
concepts of design and building methods. To construct a
better building structure, building construction drawings
are required due to following reasons:
- For better and safe building structural design
- For quality structural layouts of buildings
- Incredible steel structural drawings
- Low cost construction solutions
-Technical aspects of building’s design
- Detailed dimensional specifications of various building components such as
elevators, steel structures, panel windows, cabinets, and trusses etc
- Structural steel fabrication drawings as per standard drawing symbols
Using building construction drawings, one can get better
and safe building structural design. Building construction
drawings provide following valuable information regard-
ing building:
Above mentioned aspects are quite important as far as effectiveness of your
building is concerned. Also one can develop superior quality structural layouts
of buildings with the help of building construction drawings. By implement-
ing it into your core construction activities, one can definitely build a better
and effective building.
Building construction drawings are also important source of steel structural
drawings. We can develop efficient steel building designs using construc-
tion drawings and construct a reliable steel building in quick time. The most
important thing about construction drawings is that it provides low cost
construction solutions. It also saves good amount of total construction costs.
- Design of Structural Steel plate girder, truss girder, gantries, industrial sheds
etc
-Working drawings of wooden structures like fish repair centers, sheds, resi-
dential structures etc
- Replacement Structure Designs for any deteriorated structures

It is clearly visible that the contribution of the staff and students to Karpagam University is de- terminedtodeliveroutcomes that have the potential to make a positive impact on society. The university has a green campus ideal for an academ- ic environment. As Chancellor of the Univer- sity I am proud to put in a few words about our School of Architecture in its annual newsletter ‘MOSAIC’. I also would like to share my appreciation for the organizers of the Regional Design Sym- posium “Oblique” when this newsletter is slated for release. • 6. India’s economic growth is only sustainable with the equivalent infrastructure. Presently the growing demand is not been met by the crumbling infrastructure, such as road net- works, city transport, water & Sanitation etc. This requires a massive enlargement of urban infrastructure. The massive amount of fund (Rs 1292.37 Billion) has been made available to improve upon the basic services in the 60 major cities of India. The massive infrastructure development dis- cussed in JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru Nation- al Urban Renewal Mission) most of which talk about clean and green technologies) a large scope of architectural profession in India ex- ists at present. India has a plenty of resources for green building moreover Indian climate and econo- my is suitable for such constructions. We re- quire dedicated departments in the architec- ture schools/Engineering colleges on “Green Buildings” or “Green Architecture”. The conventional Architect does not fit into the shoe of “Green Architect”. A green Ar- chitect will essentially have the knowledge about the all the aspects like; effect to hu- man health, environmental impact, loss of re- sources, waste, air/water/indoor pollution, Still, green architect is a new profession so it is not possible to identify and quantify green architectural professionals in India. However, a few institutions have started to offer short term courses on green architect. As projections show emerg- ing demand of green construction in India and present pau- city of architect professional will result gap in future. It may further widen if proper policies are not devised in the directions. Therefore, Ministry of Rural Development and Ur- ban Planning must take initiatives in designing appropriate course in green architecture. Karpagam University’s Archi- tecture school is young with capable teachers to take up this task of popularizing Green buildings. History records the drawidian contribution in temple, cave and ship architecture. School of Architecture should take a lead in this and the cli- mate of 12 hr sunshine and average 37 C temperature will be always available for this technology to cherish and enjoy. I wish the second Congress of the Karpagam’s School of Ar- chitecture to succeed in its goal. Best regards, Dr.K.Ramasamy Vice Chancellor Karpagam University energy/water/material consumption; while designing a build- ing. This will essentially require our architect schools to have massive expansion in terms of faculty and course develop- ment. A significant gap exist between intake capacity and reg- istered professionals It is a matter of concern which needs attention of the policy makers. - Annual Newsletter of The School of Architecture, Karpagam University, Coimbatore M O S A I C Dear Readers, 6

My best wishes to the entire team for making the Regional Design Symposium ”OBLIQUE -the design angle” a grand success. 9
  • 10. Dear Friends, All praise to the Almighty, with whose grace we have successfully entered into our sec- ond year, and whose help we seek to per- form and preserve success. The past year has been hectic yet fun-filled for everyone at the school. The honorable Chancellor’s vision and tremendous support from the University management in provid- ing infrastructure and motivation has kindled all of us to deliver our best efforts. Needless to say, strong financial support as well. High academic standards, state of the art curriculum, good and accessible library, ex- cellent faculty, daily staff lunches, diverse Faculty members participated in several seminars, work- shops and conferences in new and emerging areas besides frequently organizing some as well. The visiting faculty has become stronger with the addition of a practicing structural engineer to the team. A regional design symposium “Oblique - the design angle” is scheduled for the second week of November 2010 when this students, tests and assignments, frequent guest lectures, industry collaboration, site visits, industrial visits, educational tours, case studies, expos and exhibitions, design reviews, club activities, events and semi- nars, workshops and symposiums, broad- band wi-fi, club activities, birthday parties, football matches and fun, creativity and in- novation are slowly turning default. This is just the first step, there is a long way to go. Our students did very well in many events including the recent zonasa and also man- aged to send a decent entry for the ANDC. An educational tour to TamilNadu and Pondich- erry last semester enlightened them not only about the architecture of the region, but also of the rich culture and social life of the people. newsletter is also planned for release. Being the first of its kind in South India, we hope it would be a good forum to dis- cuss design especially in the architectural context. We also hope it will be an initiator for the other schools in the region to organize this symposium on a rotational format. This is just the first step, there is a long way to go. We must adopt academic standards which will set the highest benchmarks for architectural education and practice in this region. This requires collaborated effort and understanding, strong commitment and mutual respect from all the stake holders. Success I believe, comes not from doing just what is required, but by achieving substantially much more, and gradually. Let us come together to raise this school with all our might. We sincerely would like to appreciate the efforts of all those directly and indirectly involved in building this school, brick by brick. Commendations to the Editor of the newsletter and her team for their tremendous effort in putting together its first edition. This is just the first step, there is a long way to go. May the Almighty show us the way! Best regards, Ar. • 28. - Annual Newsletter of The School of Architecture, Karpagam University, Coimbatore M O S A I C INTRODUCTION: It is recognized that water problems cannot be solved by quick technical solu- tions; solutions to water problems require the consideration of cultural, educational, SUSTAINABILITY AND WATER MANAGEMENT Ar.Siva.S Assistant Professor communication and scientific aspects. SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT-THE SCI- ENCE NEED: Water is a‘landscape agent’and is involved in a number of interdependent processes including; soil erosion, transport nutrients and pollutants, providing habitat for aquatic biota, provides a connective net- work with in the landscape. The purpose of Sustainable Water Management is simply to manage our water resources. SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT IN INDIA: How will India avert the looming crisis? For India, the two most important issues are how to balance the country’s rapid economic growth with the need to ensure equitable distribution to all sectors, in particular the urban and rural drinking water supply. It is estimated that about 21% of communicable disease in India is water related. NEED FOR INTEGRATION OF HYGIENE, SANI- TATION AND WATER QUALITY INTERVENTION: Although the burden of diarrhea disease resulting from inadequate water quality, sanitation practice and hygiene remains high, there is little understanding of the integration of these environmental control strategies. Sanitation and hygiene are often perceived as social and behavioral issues and water quality as a technical issue requiring technical intervention. CONCLUSION: An ecological approach has to be followed to introduce complementary engineering inputs with planning skills. A conservation and restoration is a step towards preparing the framework for short long term management in urban areas, the next phase should harp and embark on water based urban growth.28
