Resources: PowerPoint ‘Flags’, various websites listed at end of document, Features and meanings (Seniors Word),
Flags and meanings (Kidspiration) What is important about us (Inspiration), What is special about us (Kidspiration) Level
One and Two Flag assessment, Level 3 and 4 Flag assessment
Learning Intentions/Outcomes: students will be able: identify what aspects of a flag represent significant
characteristics of a country; to explain what makes them as a class unique and describe the meaning of the symbols they
have chosen to represent this; understand that many prototypes could be created and that people feedback is important
in the design process.
Key Competency: Using language, symbols and text making meaning of the codes in which knowledge is
expressed
Situation/Setting the Design Brief: As all representative Specifications:
Scene: The Rugby World countries have flags and emblems, our • Represents all members in the
Cup is happening in NZ in classes at Mountain View would like to classroom
2011 and all countries are have a flag that characterises our • Reflects our uniqueness
represented by a flag. uniqueness that we could use for school
                                  events.
Technological Learning Experiences: (examine, identify, discuss, collect, observe, compare, read, describe)
Knowledge
Technological Modelling
L1. Understand that functional o Explore at least 2 different countries flags and emblems and our own NZ flag and
models are used to represent reality emblem and find out what are the features of the flags and their meanings. (Rugger
and test design concepts and teacher resource has a page on each country and there are links on the
prototypes are used to test
PowerPoint to more resources.) Senior students should use research skills to find
technological outcomes
L2. Understand that functional information on the internet
models are used to explore test and o Juniors (Flags and Meanings Kidspiration file)
evaluate design concepts for o Seniors (Features and Meanings Word file)
potential outcomes and that
prototyping is used to test a o Mindmap what is important about your class. Find symbols that can represent
technological outcome for fitness of those unique features. Seniors: further develop and describe what those symbols
purpose can mean
L3. Understand that different forms
of functional modeling are said to o Juniors (What is special about us? Kidspiration)
inform decision making in the o Seniors (What is important about us? Inspiration)
development of technological o Present your ideas to a group or whole class
possibilities and that prototypes can
be used to evaluate the fitness of o What were the best parts of your flag? What did people like the most?
technological outcomes for further (Level One)
development o What were the best parts of your flag? What things might you have to
L4. Understand how different forms
of functional modeling are used to change based on others feedback? (Level Two)
explore possibilities and to justify o What are the best features of your flag and emblem? How many different
decision making and how attempts did you have to make, List the changes you made and how it

refinement of technological
improved your final flag and emblem. (Level Three)
outcomes o Show the different attempts you made at creating your final products.
How and what justified your decision making.

Technological Practice Learning Experiences:(generate, select, develop, adapt, present, test & evaluate, draw, model,
Outcome Development plan)
and Evaluation
o Draw a plan of what your flag and emblem could look like
o Write an explanation of what the flag and the emblem stand for
o Present mockup of your flag and emblem for discussion in the classroom
o Evaluate for further development and modifications on feedback from
                                                fellow students
Nature of Technology Learning Experiences: (impacts, cultural values, attitudes, behaviour, preferences, beliefs &
                               values)
Characteristics of o Flags being a part of national identification can also be a source of
technology controversy with not all people agreeing with what their national flag
represents. Explore and discuss New Zealand’s long standing dispute on
                                                what the flag should represent

Key Competency: Using language, symbols and text making meaning of the codes in which knowledge is expressed Situation/Setting the Design Brief: As all representative Specifications: Scene: The Rugby World countries have flags and emblems, our • Represents all members in the Cup is happening in NZ in classes at Mountain View would like to classroom 2011 and all countries are have a flag that characterises our • Reflects our uniqueness represented by a flag. uniqueness that we could use for school events. Technological Learning Experiences: (examine, identify, discuss, collect, observe, compare, read, describe) Knowledge Technological Modelling L1. Understand that functional o Explore at least 2 different countries flags and emblems and our own NZ flag and models are used to represent reality emblem and find out what are the features of the flags and their meanings. (Rugger and test design concepts and teacher resource has a page on each country and there are links on the prototypes are used to test PowerPoint to more resources.) Senior students should use research skills to find technological outcomes L2. Understand that functional information on the internet models are used to explore test and o Juniors (Flags and Meanings Kidspiration file) evaluate design concepts for o Seniors (Features and Meanings Word file) potential outcomes and that prototyping is used to test a o Mindmap what is important about your class. Find symbols that can represent technological outcome for fitness of those unique features. Seniors: further develop and describe what those symbols purpose can mean L3. Understand that different forms of functional modeling are said to o Juniors (What is special about us? Kidspiration) inform decision making in the o Seniors (What is important about us? Inspiration) development of technological o Present your ideas to a group or whole class possibilities and that prototypes can be used to evaluate the fitness of o What were the best parts of your flag? What did people like the most? technological outcomes for further (Level One) development o What were the best parts of your flag? What things might you have to L4. Understand how different forms of functional modeling are used to change based on others feedback? (Level Two) explore possibilities and to justify o What are the best features of your flag and emblem? How many different decision making and how attempts did you have to make, List the changes you made and how it prototyping can be used to justify refinement of technological improved your final flag and emblem. (Level Three) outcomes o Show the different attempts you made at creating your final products. How and what justified your decision making. © Jacqui Sharp 2011
  • 2. Technological Practice Learning Experiences:(generate, select, develop, adapt, present, test & evaluate, draw, model, Outcome Development plan) and Evaluation o Draw a plan of what your flag and emblem could look like o Write an explanation of what the flag and the emblem stand for o Present mockup of your flag and emblem for discussion in the classroom o Evaluate for further development and modifications on feedback from fellow students Nature of Technology Learning Experiences: (impacts, cultural values, attitudes, behaviour, preferences, beliefs & values) Characteristics of o Flags being a part of national identification can also be a source of technology controversy with not all people agreeing with what their national flag represents.
