1996: Larry and Sergey begin collaborating on a search engine called BackRub. BackRub
operates on Stanford servers for more than a year—eventually taking up too much bandwidth.

"googol," a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100
zeros—reflects Larry and Sergey's mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of
information on the web

news. (We've since shut down Google Friends Newsletter in favor of blogs, Google+ and
other methods of sharing news.)

CHAPTER-6

WORKS OF GOOGLE

Google works on web spider now called a googlebot.
The spider consists of crawler and indexer.

Crawler crawls the WebPages on the internet and also saves the links mentioned on
the webpage and crawl them too. As crawler crawls a particular pages it gets indexed
or cached in the Google database by indexer.

Explanation in Steps

1. Google search engine use software called bots or spider to scour the web

2. These bots and spider find new websites and web pages by following links on the web
page.

3. Once Google search engine find a web page, they "read" the text-based content and the
search engine stores this data into a huge library called an index.
4. When we search something on Google the search engine reaches into its gigantic index and
before displaying a list if web pages it uses its Algorithm to calculate which ones best match
your search query then it eventually presents you with search results that are related to your
query which leads you to the website you were looking for!
25

GOOGLE WORKS (PROCESS)
26

Chapter-7

EARNING OF GOOGLE

There are various possible ways through which Google generate its income.
The following are:

Google Search Engine
Gmail
YouTube
Orkut
Google Ad sense
Google Ad words
Blogger
Google Maps
Google Earth
Google News
Google Analytics
Android (operating system)

1.

Ad Words

It is the Google main source of revenue. Ad words basically deals with advertising. Reach
people when they are actively looking information about your products and services online,
and send targeted visitors directly to what you are offering. With Ad words it cost-per-click
pricing. It’s easy to control costs- and you only pay when people click on your ad
2.

Ad Sense

It is basically use for web publishers. Earn more revenue from your website, while provide
visitors with a more rewarding online experience. Google Ad Sense automatically delivers
text and image ads that are precisely targeted to site and site content -ads so well-matched. In
fact, the readers will actually find them useful. And when you add Google web search to the
site, ad sense delivers targeted ads to the search result pages too. With ad sense you earn
more ad revenue with minimal efforts - and no additional cost.

3. Page Rank
Developed by Larry page and Sergey brin at the University of Stanford in 1997
Link analysis algorithm, measuring the relative importance of a website
27

"Page rank is a vote, by all the other web pages on the internet, about how important a web
page is. A link to a web page counts as a vote of support. If there are no incoming links to a
web page then there is no support."
Academic citation literature is applied to calculate page rank
PR(A)= (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))
in this equation't1-tn' are pages linking to page A,
'c' is the number of outbund links that a page has and
'd' is a damping factor , usually set to 0.85.

4. Sponsored Results
These are the results that appear on the right hand corner of our screens after we execute a
search on Google. Websites that appear on the Sponsored Results tab have an agreement with
Google where they pay Google for showing their website on searches for specific websites.
For example, if we are searching for a Samsung mobile phone, we see websites selling
Samsung mobile phones in the Sponsored links section. Google earns some money when we
click on any of these links. The question is how much money does Google earn from
this? Google Ad words allow all potential advertisers to put up their adverts, specifying the
keywords. After assessing the advert, Google will quote a price for your advert.

5. Google mobile search
this can be explain with the help of an example
A) search the web - at the supermarket and need to find the ingredients for Thai curry? just
query "Thai curry ingredients" on your phone's web browser to search through more than 8
billion pages for the recipe that will wow the taste buds.

B) search images - is that an oak tree or an ash tree ? search more than 2 billion images and
get the one you need on your phone with Google image search.
28

C) search the mobile web - access the mobile web which s made up of site that are
specifically designed to fit your phone screen.

6.

Google Image search

Google also shows sponsored results for images under Sponsored Links above the
rest of the results. These are also a means to earn a lot of money for Google.

7. Gmail
When we sign in to our mail accounts on Gmail which is probably the most popular
at this point in time, we are shown sponsored links on our accounts. And these links
are always relevant to the keywords of the mails that we receive.

8. Orkut
Google displays text and banner ads (Google Ad sense) on Orkut profiles and pages.

9. Android
Google makes money (and justifies giving away the OS) by licensing the Google Apps that
come on most Android phones (but not all). Apps like Gmail, the Android Market, Google
Search, and others come in something called GAPPS. The Market is really where Google is
interested. Sure, the other GAPPS add value to the phone (hence why carriers license their
inclusion on Android-powered phones), but Google is making money with every app sold
through the Market. Even free apps make Google money. Developers have to pay to have an
account to list their apps under. Even ad-sponsored apps are likely using Google Mobile Ads,
so Google’s getting revenue from that source as well.
10. YouTube

Google displays text and banner ads (Google Ad sense) on youtube videos and sidebar of
YouTube pages

JOBS AT GOOGLE

In the United States, Google has offices in several states, including California, Illinois,
Massachusetts, Arizona, Michigan, New York, Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South
Carolina, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Washington (Seattle) and Washington, DC. They currently
have hundreds of openings in Engineering, IT, Operations and Support functions. Some of
the current openings at Google:
Current job postings in Engineering include openings for Software Engineers with
extensive experience in C++ programming and in java programming. There are also a
lot of openings for Testing Engineers and a few for Web Designers.
The current postings for Operations and IT include openings you would find in many
Information Technology departments, including System Administrators and Help
Desk Technicians. There were dozens of openings in their Data Center as of this
writing.
Google actively recruits college graduates, with a special website section specifically
for students. Google offers both internship and full time employment opportunities on
their student recruitment pages.
Google also has offices internationally. While much of the information presented here
refers to Google’s US offices, they currently have hundreds of Google Openings
Worldwide in areas such as Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the
Americas. I counted openings in 57 worldwide locations, not including those in the
United States.

Conclusion

Google is a great international marketing company. However there are some reserves
regarding the strategy it adopts towards Asia.
―We will take a long term view to win in China . The Chinese have 5,000 years of history.
Google has 5,000 years of patience in china
Althought google has made some progess in terms of market share

Larry, 22, a U Michigan grad, is considering the school; Sergey, 21, is assigned to show him around. 1996: Larry and Sergey begin collaborating on a search engine called BackRub. BackRub operates on Stanford servers for more than a year—eventually taking up too much bandwidth. 1997:Google.com is registered as a domain on September 15. The name—a play on the word "googol," a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros—reflects Larry and Sergey's mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web 1998: April Larry launches a monthly "Google Friends Newsletter" to inform fans about company news. (We've since shut down Google Friends Newsletter in favor of blogs, Google+ and other methods of sharing news.) August Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim writes a check for $100,000 to an entity that doesn't exist yet—a company called Google Inc. Before heading to the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert, Larry and Sergey incorporate the iconic Man into the logo to keep people informed about where the Google crew would be for a few days—our first doodle. September On September 4, Google files for incorporation in California. Larry and Sergey open a bank account in the newly-established company's name and deposit Andy Bechtolsheim's check. Google sets up workspace in Susan Wojcicki's garage on Santa Margarita Ave., Menlo Park, Calif. Larry and Sergey hire their first employee. Nearly 10 years later, we wind down Google Labs in order to prioritize our product efforts. September Google News launches with 4,000 news sources. Today Google News includes 50,000+ news sources, with 70 regional editions in different languages. All told, Google News and other services send publishers 6 billion clicks per month as of 2012. October A few months after our first employee in Australia starts selling AdWords from her lounge room, we open our office in Sydney—the second office after Japan in APAC. Our first local AdWords client is eBay Australia. December With the launch of Froogle (which became Google Shopping in 2012), people can search for stuff to buy. 2010: January We introduce the Nexus One to show what's possible on Android devices. The Nexus line of devices has since grown and now includes tablets as well as phones. More than 1,000 communities submit proposals in response. March Bike directions and bike trail data come to Google Maps. Today, there are more than 330,000 miles (530,000 kilometers) of biking trails and paths in Google Maps to help you get around on your two wheels. April We change our name to Topeka for April Fools' Day—a tribute to Topeka, Kansas, which changed its name to Google as part of an effort to bring Fiber to that city. We're the first company to launch a website publishing the number of requests we get from governments to provide information about our users or to remove content from Google products. Later in the year, we add visualizations showing disruptions in visitor traffic to our products, such as a government blocking access or a cable being cut. May As part of our efforts to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, we make our first direct investment in a utility-scale renewable energy project. Google TV is built on Android and Chrome and gives you an easy and fast way to navigate to television channels, websites, apps, shows and movies. Three years after we first launched Street View in five U.S. cities, you can explore all seven continents at eye level with the addition of Brazil, Ireland and Antarctica imagery. October We announce we've developed technology for cars that can drive themselves; we think self-driving cars can help prevent traffic accidents, free up people’s time and reduce carbon emissions. Our automated cars have since logged more than 500,000 miles on the road. December YouTube introduces True View, a new kind of ad—after 5 seconds, if an ad doesn't seem relevant or interesting to you, you can skip it. TrueView is part of our effort to ensure viewers watch ads that are most relevant to them, and advertisers reach the right audience. 2013: January We commit to invest $200 million in a wind farm in west Texas. This brings our total clean energy commitments to more than $1 billion, which can generate over 2 GW—enough to power all the public elementary schools in New York, Wyoming and Oregon for a year. February We introduce enhanced campaigns, which updates AdWords for the multi-screen world. In 50 words, tomorrow’s Glass Explorers tell us what they would do if they had Glass. The first Explorers get Glass later in the year. Our newest laptop—the Chromebook Pixel—is designed from the ground up for power users who have embraced the cloud. April Get just the information you need right when you need it with the release of Google Now for iPhone and iPad. • 24. 24 CHAPTER-6 WORKS OF GOOGLE Google works on web spider now called a googlebot. The spider consists of crawler and indexer. Crawler crawls the WebPages on the internet and also saves the links mentioned on the webpage and crawl them too. As crawler crawls a particular pages it gets indexed or cached in the Google database by indexer. Explanation in Steps 1. Google search engine use software called bots or spider to scour the web 2. These bots and spider find new websites and web pages by following links on the web page. 3. Once Google search engine find a web page, they "read" the text-based content and the search engine stores this data into a huge library called an index. 4. When we search something on Google the search engine reaches into its gigantic index and before displaying a list if web pages it uses its Algorithm to calculate which ones best match your search query then it eventually presents you with search results that are related to your query which leads you to the website you were looking for!
  • 26. 26 Chapter-7 EARNING OF GOOGLE There are various possible ways through which Google generate its income. The following are: Google Search Engine Gmail YouTube Orkut Google Ad sense Google Ad words Blogger Google Maps Google Earth Google News Google Analytics Android (operating system) 1. Ad Words It is the Google main source of revenue. Ad words basically deals with advertising. Reach people when they are actively looking information about your products and services online, and send targeted visitors directly to what you are offering. With Ad words it cost-per-click pricing. It’s easy to control costs- and you only pay when people click on your ad 2. Ad Sense It is basically use for web publishers. Earn more revenue from your website, while provide visitors with a more rewarding online experience. Google Ad Sense automatically delivers text and image ads that are precisely targeted to site and site content -ads so well-matched. In fact, the readers will actually find them useful. And when you add Google web search to the site, ad sense delivers targeted ads to the search result pages too. With ad sense you earn more ad revenue with minimal efforts - and no additional cost. 3. Page Rank Developed by Larry page and Sergey brin at the University of Stanford in 1997 Link analysis algorithm, measuring the relative importance of a website
  • 27. 27 "Page rank is a vote, by all the other web pages on the internet, about how important a web page is. A link to a web page counts as a vote of support. If there are no incoming links to a web page then there is no support." Academic citation literature is applied to calculate page rank PR(A)= (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn)) in this equation't1-tn' are pages linking to page A, 'c' is the number of outbund links that a page has and 'd' is a damping factor , usually set to 0.85. 4. Sponsored Results These are the results that appear on the right hand corner of our screens after we execute a search on Google. Websites that appear on the Sponsored Results tab have an agreement with Google where they pay Google for showing their website on searches for specific websites. For example, if we are searching for a Samsung mobile phone, we see websites selling Samsung mobile phones in the Sponsored links section. Google earns some money when we click on any of these links. The question is how much money does Google earn from this? Google Ad words allow all potential advertisers to put up their adverts, specifying the keywords. After assessing the advert, Google will quote a price for your advert. 5. Google mobile search this can be explain with the help of an example A) search the web - at the supermarket and need to find the ingredients for Thai curry? just query "Thai curry ingredients" on your phone's web browser to search through more than 8 billion pages for the recipe that will wow the taste buds. B) search images - is that an oak tree or an ash tree ? search more than 2 billion images and get the one you need on your phone with Google image search.
  • 28. 28 C) search the mobile web - access the mobile web which s made up of site that are specifically designed to fit your phone screen. 6. Google Image search Google also shows sponsored results for images under Sponsored Links above the rest of the results. These are also a means to earn a lot of money for Google. 7. Gmail When we sign in to our mail accounts on Gmail which is probably the most popular at this point in time, we are shown sponsored links on our accounts. And these links are always relevant to the keywords of the mails that we receive. 8. Orkut Google displays text and banner ads (Google Ad sense) on Orkut profiles and pages. 9. Android Google makes money (and justifies giving away the OS) by licensing the Google Apps that come on most Android phones (but not all). Apps like Gmail, the Android Market, Google Search, and others come in something called GAPPS. The Market is really where Google is interested. Sure, the other GAPPS add value to the phone (hence why carriers license their inclusion on Android-powered phones), but Google is making money with every app sold through the Market. Even free apps make Google money. Developers have to pay to have an account to list their apps under. Even ad-sponsored apps are likely using Google Mobile Ads, so Google’s getting revenue from that source as well. 10. YouTube Google displays text and banner ads (Google Ad sense) on youtube videos and sidebar of YouTube pages
