- Doing my presentation on darrenaronofsky, hands-down one of the most talented directors working in hollywood today.He’s directed actors like mickeyrourke, mark wahlberg, christian bale, vincentcassell and hughjackman. He also directed natalieportman in one of her more recent movies, black swan. Idk if you’ve heard of it. If you haven’t, leave. Just kidding. Don’t. You might remember him as the director of black swan or the fighter or the wrestler…maybe…but he’s directed a handful of other movies that lots of people haven’t heard of yet. Prepare to get yerselves educated.
- So I’ve never seen myself as a person who particularly cares about stuff. Like, I don’t have a favorite author…really, and I don’t have a favorite ice cream or designer or car or band or time of day or flavor of coffee creamer. I don’t really care what temperature the thermostat is set at. I don’t have a favorite actor or actress. I can tell you lists of top things that I do and don’t like, but I typically don’t have favorites.Except for directors.Ever since I saw aronofsky’s “the fountain,” I knew he was my favorite director. Hands down. Like, I’m not a film or movie person, but he’s the top. The bees knees in my eyes. And I don’t care if it’s because I don’t’ know other directors to compare him to – he’s just my favorite. Cool.
- Aronofsky was born and raised in Brooklyn. He went to Harvard to study film theory, and then went on to the American Film Institute. His senior thesis film, called Supermarket Sweep, was highly acclaimed for a student of his level. The film went on to become a National Student Academy Award finalist. In a recent interview with slashfilm, the interviewer asked about Aronofsky’s earlier work. Aronofsky replied modestly – almost shyly – that he was embarrassed of his earlier works. Supermarket Sweep and an earlier documentary he made were both filmed with…well…film, so they aren’t digitized yet and have yet to be made available to the public.
- PiHis first feature-length film, produced on a budget made wholly of donations from family and friends, promised returns with interest, won many awards.Dark, twisted narrative about ____, a numerologist, who discovers a big truth in ___. Not for the faint of heart – you’ll leave it thinking “wtf did I just watch?” but it definitely makes you think.
- this film isn’t one of my favorites of his – it really makes you uncomfortable when you’re watching it. I mean, I saw it once and I appreciated it then, but I doubt I could watch it again. It’s really tough. It doesn’t even cover any serious subject matter, too – the way it’s shot, the sounds aronofsky and clintmansell use and the colors…it’s all black and white…add to the paranoia you feel. You don’t really sympathize with the character – you want him to stop everything he’s doing and move the hell on with his life – but you can’t take your eyes away from the trainwreck.Pi won aronofsky the best director award at the 1998 sundance film festival.
- Requiem for a dreamFirst big movie at the box office – I’m sure most of you have seen it. The movie follows four characters as they experiment with drugs and spiral out of control. - Ok, I don’t say this lightly, but The Fountain is my favorite movie of all time. And that means a lot for me to say that. It’s a movie with a lot of layers and embedded metaphors – watch it alone your first go-round. It’ll wreck you. I honestly wept like a baby when I first saw it.Follows Hugh Jackman’s character and his relationship with his dying wife, played by Rachel Weisz. It’s got a bit of sci-fi in it, too, as it’s told through three different time periods. It deals a lot with death and how we come to grips with it…I don’t know. It’s a doozy. The Fountain, which was nominated for Best Original Score in the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards,
- The fountainIn researching it, I really got the urge to watch it again. My copy is with my boyfriend, so I’m having withdrawals right now. It’s a truly beautiful movie – the costumes are amazing, Hugh and Rachel are amazing actors, and Aronofsky finds a way to really make you feel the pain and love that the characters are feeling. This image is on set while filming the Fountain – Aronofsky looks like the hasidic Jew on the right, and rachel and hugh obviously. Hugh Jackman sucks, man. Like, he’s never not attractive. He rocks the hell out of a ratty, dirty, tattered beard through the majority of the movie, and he even goes bald for the last third of it…and I still dug him.
- The wrestler is a more recent movie that you’ve probably all heard of – it’s remembered as Mickey Rourke’s big comeback role. Mickey Rourke, for those of you who don’t know, was a huge star in the 80s who got in a lot of trouble for his drug use and abuse. He beelined to the B-list actor realm, and this movie really brought him back onto the scene.The movie follows him as he struggles with drugs and the world of professional wrestling as an older, washed-up wrestler. It climaxes at his big match…and it leaves you feeling demolished. But awesome at the same time. It’s a really great film about something that I otherwise would know nothing about.
- Rotten tomatoes gave it a 98%To promote the movie, rourke went to Wrestlemania 25 and was challenged by chrisjericho. Rourke punched him out. Not too bad for a fictional wrestling character…but if anyone’s seen Mickey Rourke, you all know how much of a badass he is. This is an amazing photograph taken for Vogue by annieliebowitz.
- The fighter is another recent movie that came out in 2010 starring Mark Wahlberg in the role he was born to play. Actually, it’s the role he almost always plays…the tough guy with the furrowed brows (furrow them) who has a tough decision to make and is constantly stressin’ about something. He knows it well. He’s a fighter, obvsiously, in this movie. His brother is played by Christian Bale, who struggles with drug abuse. The movie is about boxing, sure, but it’s also about family dynamics and Wahlberg’s struggle to become as successful as he can in his age. He’s an underdog character who has big goals and ambitions. Does he reach his goal? Does he become successful? Gotta watch to see!
- The fighter – nominationsRotten Tomatoes gave the fighter a 91%. Many of the critics said that the fighter was just another boxing movie – but I beg to differ. I mean, it is a narrative about a boxer trying to beat the odds and follow his dreams, but there’s a lot that differentiates this movie from, say, Rocky. This movie shows the struggle between Wahlberg’s character – Mickey – and his family, who themselves are fighting against poverty. This movie isn’t a feel-good coming-of-age story: it shows the real struggles of what it takes to rise above.
- I straight up was excited for this movie for months before it hit theaters. Like, I tried to get into the midnight premier when it first came to austin, and I didn’t make it – but you can bet your bottom dollar that I waited in line in the freezing cold with 300 strangers just to catch a glimpse of nat.port doing ballet. Didn’t make it in. so much regret in my life. I saw it four times in theaters though, and loved every minute of it. In my eyes, this movie is perfection. I don’t love it as much as I love the fountain, but it’s seriously great. If you haven’t seen it, the film basically follows this prima ballerina on her downward spiral of a quest to find perfection. It’ll rock your world.
- This movie took last years’ oscars by storm. It was nominated for a handful of oscar awards, and natalie took away best actress. Aronofsky was nominated for best achievement in directing. Nat.port won a golden globe for best actress, too. Aronofsky took home an independent spirit award for best director, and natport took one home for best female lead.Basically everyone agreed that she did a killer job as ninasayers. She and aronofsky are such an amazing team together – the film turned out spectacularly. Definitely worth a watch…or two…or three.Oh, and natport and milakunis won the MTV movie award for best kiss that year. End of sentence.
- Clint mansell is an english musician, composer and former singer of “Pop Will Eat Itself.” He and Aronofsky were friends, and he propositioned him to write the score to Requiem for a Dream. Mansell obviously accepted. The most notable song from this film is LuxAeterna, (clip in background) – used in all sorts of films, trailers, and commericals.He’s gone on to work with Trent Reznor, (lead singer of NiN) and they’ve worked together for NiN albums and for some of Aronofsky’s films. He’s written scores for over half of Aronofsky’s films, as well as films like Smokin’ Aces and the upcoming Mass Effect 3 movie.
- New ventures:He was going to direct the new wolverine movie in japan, but personal issues took him away from filming and he eventually decided to give the film up. He recently directed a set of anti-meth PSAs – they’re pretty moving and are definitely very aronofksy. http://www.imdb.com/news/ni16274329/IMBD reports that aronofsky got the green light to start production with paramount on a film about noah’s ark…the film is set to have a budget of $130 million. Apparently aronofsky’s been trying to do a movie about noah and his ark for ages – he wrote a poem when he was thirteen through the eyes of noah, and that was his inspiration.
- Awards and nominations, Trivia//personal lifeTidbit about his personal life: he was married to actress rachelweisz, who co-starred in the fountain, in 2006. they met on set. Awkard. They have one son together, named henry. They divorced last year, and six months later she remarried to danielcraig – yeah, the blonde james bond. Brutal, right?Some other fun facts: these aren’t really fun, but whatever. He was considered to direct the watchmen, aeon flux, and the next superman movie. He declined these offers.Another fun fact: apparently he started talking to natport about filming a ballerina movie back in 2000. the film was released ten years later. His highest grossing flim was the wrestler. He earned $44,674,354.
