2. The Great Fear- Stage 1 August 10, 1792 a crowd in Paris slaughtered the King’s guards and the royal family fled to the Legislative Assembly Paris radicals then took over the Assembly and called for elections of a new legislative body- National Convention
3. The National Convention The National Convention abolished the monarchy and made France a republic. They seized lands of nobles and abolished all titles of nobility. Suffrage was granted to all male citizens rather than just those who owned property
4. Monarchy abolished they put King Louis XVI on trial as a traitor, he was sentenced to death on Jan. 1793 and was beheaded Marie Antoinette was beheaded in Oct.
5. Committee of Public Safety- Stage 2 Led by Maximilien Robespierre, it was created to deal with any threat to France Particularly, those against the revolution
6. Reign of Terror (July 1793-1794) Hasty trials, death sentences (40,000) by the guillotine, many were executed including victims of mistaken identity or false accusations Members of the Convention then turned on the Committee, July 1794 Robespierre was arrested and executed
7. The Directory- Stage 3 In reaction to the terror, another Constitution was written in 1795 Set up a five man directory and two houses elected by property owning men
8. Women Olympe de Gouges- writer who demanded that women receive equal rights Was executed using the guillotine Women lost many of the rights they had gained during the Revolution “women lacked the moral and physical strength necessary to practice political rights”
9. Changes in daily life Titles were eliminated Elaborate clothes were replaced with practical clothing nationalism-a strong feeling of pride for one’s country Social reforms Religious toleration Set up state schools to replace religious ones
