74. It is arguably Asia’s largest cattle fair. It is said that, Chandragupta
Maurya(340 - 297 BCE) used to buy elephants and horses during this
festival.
The legend of Gajendhra Moksha states that Gajendra (the king of
elephants) was crossing river Gandak at this place when Gandharva
chief Huhu (crocodile) caught his legs in its jaws. This led to a fight
between the two during which Gajendra prayed to Lord Vishnu for
help. Lord Vishnu came to Gajendra’s rescue by taking the avatar
(incarnation) of Baba Hariharnath. He beheaded the crocodile and
saved the elephant king. In fact, the cattle fair used to commence
with the ceremonial bath of elephants on the occasion of Kartik
