- Pallavi takes back and begins introduction of SAFRG… We have a 20 year history We are more ready than ever to take up the challenge of training the sector and building REAL capacity for organizations working for the betterment of society, and we want to share with you not only our work, our mission, and our challenges, but how our programs and our overall strategy put us in a unique position to really take the lead in this capacity building work, in the areas of fundraising, communications, and organizational learning…
- So, who we are is simple… Our mission. Our vision.
- As General Sandhu alluded to, we face real challenges in this sector to bring about a more professional way of doing business…
- In recognizing our challenges, we have identified a 3 point strategy to guide our work ….
- At present we offer the following programs as the practical extension of our strategy
- Don’t forget this year it is on 8-11 August 2009 in Jaipur! We are still looking for support, speakers, and inputs….

- The more people who attend our classes attracts more people to AFP – we need to have this in place to support developing Fundraising into a real profession The ‘scale-up’ of AFP is dependent on greater support to SAFRG’s work, and is linked to building the confidence of fundraisers across the region
- Just two months ago, we worked in Sri Lanka with CARM on their national level fundraising workshop – huge success We are in conversation with groups in Nepal and Mauritius, past attendees of the workshop, we hope to support national-level workshops in these countries as well. In the absence of sustained funding for this effort, the eventual success is dependent on the partner organization in each country having the capacity and drive to take this forward. It only shows us that the need is strong across the region, but funding for such efforts limits the reach we could have – “if we gave Nepal money today they could have their conference ready in a month!” (have Sandhu say this?)
- Many of you work with partners across the region. These organizations are small, sometimes hard to reach – but all are in need of fundraising and communications training. In the case of our work with IDRC, we provided a training tailor-made to the needs of their own partners, who all worked in a specific theme, allowing us to really get specific about tools, skills and ‘next steps’ for their work. We also see our mentoring services as a link back to our ongoing programs – enabling more and more people to access the benefits of sector-level training and events
- This is a HUGE piece of building a professional identity in our sector for fundraising and communications professionals!!! We have wanted to do this for a while now, we have had conversations with many people to get clarity on how to go forward. We are pleased to announce that we have received a grant from Waterloo Foundation in the UK to cover 50% of all the costs, and are now seeking a ‘match’ for this grant to enable us to move forward… We welcome your thoughts, comments, and ideas on this critical piece of our work, as it will take more than SAFRG to make this happen…
- SAFRG is not the only, nor are we the first organization to address fundraising capacity building, -- we are not even the only player in South Asia – we recognize this but believe, quite strongly, that we offer a few key, and differentiating features that make our programs and partnerships unique, and positioned for success.

I would like to invite Katherine Hay of IDRC to share her reflections on not only SAFRG, but on the need to build capacity in fundraising in our sector, to avoid “projectization” and donor dependence. We also welcome her comments on the pressing need for a new effort in networking and communications between all the players in our sector. Katherine …..
