2. A Word About language
Language is around us everywhere. Without it, life in
modern society would be impossible. Business executives
use words in planning production and in promoting their
products. Politicians use language in discussing the issues,
drawing up laws explaining their stand to the voters.
Newspapers keep us informed through words. Teachers,
lawyers ministers-none could do their work without
language.
The study of English helps people use language easily
and well. It helps people to speak and write effectively, to
understand the workings of language and to listen and read
with profit and pleasure.

3. In Order To Speak and write, Develop a Lifelong
Interest in Words
Success in English requires a knowledge of words.
Anyone must learn to study words- to pay attention to
new words, to look them up in a dictionary, to watch
for them in future listening, reading or writing.
Words are interesting in themselves. They are basic
building blocks in speech and writing because no one
can communicate without words that convey exact
meaning. Both in school and in every day life, people
who went to do well must be articulate. They must be
able to use words easily and well.

4. The Role of an English Language Teacher
A key factor in developing the language skills
of the students is a teacher who serves as their
role model. The effects of teachers’ influence and
knowledge on the language can be seen in the
speaking, writing and reading ability of their
students who will come out to be good in using
the English language and reflective of the kind of
education they have acquired from a teacher.
As such, the role of an English language
teacher plays an active part to prepare the
students to face the challenges of the world as
they grow older to be able to interact with others
using the language.

5. The Importance of Knowing the
English Grammar
Thank you for the helpful explanation on the English
Grammar. Having a good knowledge and understanding of
it is very important for me as a language teacher.
I know that MED 104 (Grammatical Structure of
English) will be of great interest to me and my classmates,
because we are looking ways on how to improve our
teaching skills using the English language.

I definitely took away good ideas from the information.
Now I know why I always insist my students to be careful
with their grammar especially in their compositions ‘coz I
was a product of prescriptive grammar.
