Fractional distillation
1. Title: Separation of organic liquids from a mixture by fraction distillation.
Objective: To separate and purify a mixture of two liquids by distillation.
Materials Required: Conical bottom flasks, condenser, 10mL graduated cylinder, boiling stone,
receiver distilling still, Round bottom flasks, thermometer, hot plate, ring stand, fractionating
column, thermometer adapter, rubber tubing, side arm, clamp, and sand dish.
Chemicals: Rubbing alcohol
Procedure:
1. Secure round bottom flask with clamp and connect to ring stand
2. Place 10 mL of rubbing alcohol into round bottom flask and add a boiling stone. Place sand
dish under round bottom flask.
2. Insert fractionating column into round bottom flask, and insert side arm on top of fractionating
column, and insert thermometer.
3. Insert condenser tube into side arm and support condenser with a second ring stand. At the end
of condenser tube place a delivery tube.
4. Connect lower part of condenser tube to tap, and upper part of condenser tube should be
placed in the sink.
5. Turn on water pump to circulate water into condenser.
6. Turn on hot plate and slowly raise the temperature until vapors can be seen.
7. Watch for the first drop of distillate and record time and temperature. Collect the distillate in a
flask.
8. Continue to record temperature and time every 4 minutes until, no more distillate collects in
receiver flask.
9. Turn off hot plate, lift apparatus, and let cool at room temperature. Graph data collected,
temperature ( y axis), versus volume of distillate mL (x axis)
