2. Yoga and Ayurveda are the ancient science of Indian Wisdom.
Ayurveda not only deals with medical line of treatment but it also
deals with surgical treatment.
There are many references in Ayurveda regarding surgeries being
carried out by Acharya Sushruta. Hence, Acharya Sushruta is rightly
called as “The Father of Surgery”. He has done many surgeries like
Laporotomy, Craniotomy, Cataract Operation, Plastic surgery,
Haemmorrhoidectomy; Painless Tooth Extraction etc.

3.  Though there was no Anesthesia in those days he used to carry out
surgeries by using some yogic procedure and by manipulating some
Marma Sthanas (vital points) in the body.

6. So what is this Jalandhara Bandha Yoga?
Jala means network.
 It is a network of arteries, veins and nerves.
Bandha means to Lock.
 So Jalandhara Bandha means locking or blocking of the nerve
plexus, arteries and veins around the neck.
 This technique of blocking the nerve plexus is made use for the
extraction of the tooth without anesthesia.

7. How to extract tooth without anesthesia?
PURVAKARMA
(Pre-operative procedure)
 In this stage first the patient is examined
thoroughly, and the decision is taken whether the
teeth should be treated conservatively or it needs
extraction.
 If it needs extraction then the patient is educated
priorly about the procedure of the yogic teeth
extraction and he is prepared both mentally and
physically.
 While extraction special care is taken, if the patient
is Krisha (lean), Durbala (weak), Vriddha (aged) or
suffering from any neurological problems.

8. PRADHANAKARMA
(Operative procedure)
 Patient is made to sit in Sukhasana or
Padmasana on wooden plank of 2-3”
height.
 He should be calm, relaxed and should
concentrate on Vishuddha Chakra
(Present in throat).
 Then he is asked to hold both the knees
firmly with his palm and fingers.
 After that the Ayurvedic Dental Surgeon
stands behind the patient and puts cloth
over his head and bends his head towards
chest, so that the chin gets locked to the
supra sternal notch or Jugular notch.

9.  Danta Vaidya (Dental Surgeon)
then puts pressure over the
Sushumna Nadi (Spinal Cord)
with his left knee and puts
pressure over trigeminal nerve
with his left hand.
 Then the Patients head is slightly
moved up and down for 2-3
times, then the head is lifted and
tooth is extracted by using
appropriate tooth extraction
forcep.

10. It is said that there is no pain without vitiation of
Vata Dosha. Here Vata is controlled by doing
Jalandharabandha which in turn blocks the pain
path and thus helps in painless tooth extraction.

11.  In this step utmost care of the patient is taken to reduce the
chances of infection and to promote wound healing.
 Hence patient is given with Vranaropana (Wound healing) and
Raktastambhaka (haemostaic) Gandoosha (gargles) and
dressing is done with suitable Ayurvedic Antiseptic Drugs.

12.  Don’t create stress in the neck, throat, jaw, face, eyes, palate, shoulders or
anywhere else.
 Avoid collapsing the upper thoracic vertebrae as well.
 It is suggested to breathe fully when doing bridge, shoulder stand, knee to
ear pose, and other asanas that force an extreme jalandhara bandha, but
always avoid any constrictions/tightness of the throat as well as the breath.

13.  If you already have a flat neck (less than 10% of the
population), then make an effort that the normal "S" shaped
curve of the neck is achieved by making an effort to bring C1
and C2 posterior as the chin moves down and inward.
 The latter will correct a flat neck at the upper cervical spine.

14.  Jalandhara bandha tonifies the throat chakra, neck, shoulder,
and arm regions.
 Jalandhara bandha is a great aid in pranayama which in turn
is a great boost to pratyhara and meditation practice.
 It can correct TMJ and flat neck problems when performed
with sensitivity and awareness.
 It remediates the jutting out of the chin and cervical
vertebral compression.

15.  It relieves pressure at the cervical spine and
relaxes tension at the throat region.
 It opens the chest and relaxes the shoulders.

16.  Kriyas included under jalandhara bandha yoga technique
are:
 Jalandhara bandha position
 Patient was instructed to set in sukhasana and asked to firmly
hold his Kneecaps by palm of his hands and press them.
 Physician pressurizes the spine of patient by his knees.
 Yantrana – Shaking of head and position of mouth before
extraction.

17.  Jalandhara bandha does not cause vata vitiation, when performed
accurately.
 After applying Jalandhara badha the vayu residing in Urdhvajatru
does not undergo prakopa and hence destructs pain. Hence one
can perform tooth extraction by controling vayu.
 Jalandhara badha stops the nerve impulses for that time hence
nullifying the effect of pain by blocking the nabhojala in throat.
 By performing this bandha correctly ida and pigala nadi get
compressed and if in this stage tooth extraction if done nullifys the
pain.
 Satvavajaya or convincing treatment is very essential so too
consent of the patient is very much necessary.

18.  Purpose of patient holding his
kneecaps by his palm was pressing
the acupressure point of his palm.
 For the toothache there are points
distributed in the finger of the both
the hand.
 According to principal of
acupressure any point if continuously
pressurized for minutes it gives
anaesthetize effect of the respective
point.

19.  Purpose of physician pressurizing
the spinal column creates compression
of Ida - Pingala and Shushumna nadi
and energies get blocked and hence
samvedana (Impulses) will fail to reach
Aagnyachakra and this stage tooth
extraction can be performed.
 The physician locks the chin of patients
by his left hand and places his other
hand on patients head and shakes his
head.
 This also helps in stopping of the pain
sensation to reach the brain.

20.  If carotid sinuses are gently pressed
then one becomes very relaxed and
perhaps a little faint.
 This can be a help in various other
yogic practices that lead to meditational
experience.
 These carotid sinuses are widely
known in modern times.
 Many people get fainted by mere
pressure of these bodies.
 Some people seem to be more
sensitive than others; a slight pressure
is sufficient to put some people on their
back.

21.  Limitations of the technique
 The technique cannot be employed in patients who have
stiffness of neck, cervical spondylitis and facial paralysis.
 Technique may fail in nervous and weak patient.
