3. HAVELIS
THIS IS THE INTERSETING CATEGORY OF STRUCTURES BUILT DURING MUGHAL RULE IN INDIA WERE
HAVELIS.
A haveli is a traditional townhouse, mansion,
manor house, palace or fort in the Indian
subcontinent, usually one with historical and
architectural significance. The word haveli is
derived from Arabic haveli, meaning "partition"
or "private space", popularized under the
Mughal Empire, and was devoid of any
architectural affiliations.

Some interesting facts about DADRA AND NAGAR HAVELIS Here are a few
examples:
• In Pre-modern and medieval times this land was ruled by Maratha rulers.
•Marathas made alliances and signed treaties with Portuguese to safeguard this
region from the attacks of Mughals and British forces. In return Marathas offered
Portuguese to collect tax from the villages of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
•Portuguese influence grew up eventually after the loss of Maratha power in 3rd
war of Panipat and Portuguese became the sole ruler of Dadra and Nagar
Haveli.
•This territory was Portuguese colony till 1954 when its control was seized and
annexed by India from Portuguese on 2 Aug 1954.
•The havelis in Shekhawat are known for their magnificent frescoes. The
havelis of Jaisalmer had an innovative design which kept out heat and
dust. Tourists come from all over the world to catch a glimpse of the
intricate stone carved the jharokhas or the balconies found in these
havelis.

These remarkable structures were stepwells built by
rulers and rich citizens. Flights of steps led to
underground shelters which were build around wells
to obtain underground water. Baolis can be found in
Delhi, Haryana and Gujarat. Raniji ki baori (queen
stepwell) in Bundi, Rajasthan is the one of the largest
stepwells built in the 17th century CE. It was built by
Rani Nathavat Ji wife of Raja Anirudh Singh of Bundi
is known for its architectural beauty.
