Several critics' opinions on William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" remains relevant in today's society.
The play touches on themes such as suicide, vengeance, the moral weakness of women, murder,
issues and outcomes that are as common today as they were in Shakespeare's time.
Some have stated that Shakespeare's `Hamlet' isn't relevant in society today that society has moved
on. If this statement is true, then why are movies being made on `Hamlet' and why are students in
schools and universities being made to study it"?
The answer is that `Hamlet' is an exceptional adventure story full of suspense, conspiracy and
murder. It is a story of a young Danish Prince whose tactic to reprisal his father's murder results
ultimately in misfortune. `Hamlet' explores many problems that are relevant in society today. The
main arguments are suicide, revenge, liability in women, murder, consequence and prospect.
This argument is the backing for `Hamlet's' relevance in society today. They are visibly in today's
society and have been progressively since Hamlet was ever written. Such arguments like suicide are
clearly seen by people today, and it is increasing.
The New York Times asked students to submit their performances of scenes from "Hamlet" via
Instagram. They received close to 500 submissions. A statement from The New York times "Let it
not be said that Shakespeare means nothing to young people". The anolage of Hamlet was

Hamlet
One of the most unique elements of the Hamlet character is that he is so human. Many types of
readers can identify with him. Hamlet is imperfect, and he is fretful. Hamlet has human properties,
and it is his humanity that I intend to explore. Indeed it is these human qualities and imperfections
that make his story so tragic. Another tragic part of the play is the plays irony. Irony is an
important tool in the hands of the playwright to achieve both comical and/or dramatic effect. There
is usually little reason for a tragedy to be funny, so
Shakespeare has used this tool to add more tragedy to the play. I will investigate the nature of this
irony. Also, I will investigate the types of conflict that play a major part in the play...show more
content...
One occurrence of irony I found particularly striking was the fact that Hamlet effectively maneuvers
himself into the same position as Claudius. Claudius had attacked and killed a man who did not
have the opportunity to defend himself, but when Hamlet kills Polonius, is he not guilty of the
same? It is intriguing that both Claudius and Hamlet have killed fathers. It is interesting to see
how these two completely different characters deal with this problem in different ways. Other
interesting parallels I found are the numerous deaths by poison. Hamlet's father was murdered by
Claudius with poison. In the final act, the queen is the first to be poisoned, by drinking from
Hamlet's cup. Then, Hamlet is wounded by the poisoned tip of Laertes' sword. When they change
swords, Hamlet gets the upper hand and Laertes is poisoned. When the queen dies, Laertes
explains all to Hamlet, before he dies. Hamlet then kills Claudius before dying himself. It is ironic
that, as Claudius is poisoned because of his own plotting, he had already signed his own death
warrant when he killed Hamlet's father, the first tragic action of the play. There are only three people
in this play who don't die by poisoning: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern meet their deaths in England,
after being outsmarted by Hamlet. The third is Ophelia, who is drowned.
There are three types of conflict I can identify in the play: 'man versus man', 'man versus nature' and
'man versus

Hamlet Final Essay The tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare brilliantly recounts the tale of
feigned and true madness as it delves into themes of betrayal, incest, revenge, moral corruption, and
death. The play, set in the kingdom of Denmark, gives an account of how PrinceHamlet seeks exact
revenge on his uncle Claudius, for murdering his own brother and Prince Hamlet's father. After
assassinating King Hamlet, Claudius succeeds the throne and becomes joined in holy matrimony to
King Hamlet's widow and Prince Hamlet's mother, Queen...show more content...
Hamlet's image of Claudius reveals the extensive amount of disgust that he has for the man who has
married his mother. Later on in the play, when actors arrive at the castle, Hamlet requests that they
do a speech that he once heard. This speech happens to be the tale that Aenes told Dido about the
murder of Priam. Hamlet starts the speech himself but then lets the actor take control who recites,
"Unequal matched/ Pyrrhus at Priam drives.... The 'unnerved father falls"(2.2.458–461). Here, it is
possible that Hamlet is comparing Pyrrhus to himself and Priam to Claudius. In the story of
Pyrrhus and Priam, Pyrrhus has come to the city of Troy in order to avenge the death of his father
by killing the Trojan King Priam. At one point in the tale, Pyrrhus hesitated with his sword in the air
when he had the chance to kill Priam right then. This is similar to act three scene three where
Hamlet almost takes Claudius' life with his dagger while he is praying but halts mid–strike. Another
possibility is that Hamlet is comparing Pyrrhus to Claudius and Priam to King Hamlet. Even
though Claudius didn't murder King Hamlet with a sword, they were unequally matched as King
Hamlet was asleep when Claudius poisoned him. Hamlet is drawing a parallel between the murder
of Prium by Pyrrhus, and the murder of his father at the hands of Claudius. The speech about
Pyrrhus and Priam plays a very important role in the play. Up until

Hamlet and Tragedy
Hamlet: A Tragedy When you think of William Shakespeare, Hamlet is the first thing most people
think of, as his work. Hamlet is also a classic example of a tragedy. In all tragedies the hero suffers,
and usually dies at the end. All good pieces of literature written way back when, are usually
tragedies. The most important element is the amount of free will the character has. In every tragedy,
the character must display free will. If every action is controlled by a hero's destiny, then the hero's
death can't be avoided, and in a tragedy the sad part is that it could. Hamlet's death could have been
avoided many times. Hamlet had many...show more content...
The tragic hero must possess many good traits, as well as one flaw, which eventually leads to his
downfall. A tragic hero must be brave and noble. Hamlet is the perfect example of the tragic hero.
Hamlet has all the good traits needed to be a tragic hero. He is brave and daring. One example of
this is that when he went to England, he was taking a big risk and knew they were out to kill him.
His loyalty to his father, was the reason he was so angry with Claudius and his Mother. Eric
Bentley said that a Tragedy is dependent on comedy. Comic relief is used in tragedies to change
the atmosphere of the reader, who is constantly focusing on the death and corruption of a tragedy.
If a play were full of the death and sorrow, as in tragedies, it would make the reader very depressed
and not like the play. Some examples of this in Hamlet, are in the Gravedigger Scene, Talking to the
Skull and the Throwing of the book.
Towards the end of the play, there are two scenes in the graveyard. One is when Hamlet picks up
a skull, and the gravedigger tells him that the skull belonged to Yorick, the old king's jester.
Hamlet tells Horatio that he knew Yorick, and then realizes what we all become after we die,
dust. He then plays with the idea of life and death, and describes the finality of it. The gravedigger
scene is the tragic conclusion of the play. The second scene of comedy in this scene is when the
gravediggers argue whether Ophelia should be allowed to be

Hamlet Analysis Essay On Hamlet
Shakespeare's play, "Hamlet", is an intriguing and intricate drama about an individual who wants to
avenge the death of his father. Prince Hamlet's father, King Hamlet, was once king and the throne
was inherited by his evil brother, King Claudius. In addition to inheriting the throne, Claudius has
married Prince Hamlet's mother, Gertrude, which is perceived as weird and unlawful. Interestingly,
Prince Hamlet has cohesive evidence that King Claudius is responsible for the death of his father.
As a result, Prince Hamlet's main goal is to kill Claudius as revenge for killing his father. King
Hamlet's ghost constantly appears in the play, and it encourages Prince Hamlet to commit the
murder. While attempting to kill Claudius, Hamlet portrays...show more content...
Hamlet feels pressured and startled by the ghost because he knows that he needs to get revenge
without fumbling. In all, the ghost's presence represents memory and death, which contributes to his
overall perceived mad state.
Shakespeare uses Hamlet's clothing to express his grief and sadness towards the death of his
father. Since he is the only one that wears black in the court, Gertrude and Claudius begin to get
angry and believe that his choice of clothing acts as an interruption to their state of happiness.
Essentially, Claudius wants Hamlet to completely forget about his father and move on, which is
impossible and Hamlet gets more irritated. The court only sees Hamlet from an outside
perspective, and as a result, it is tough to judge someone on the inside. Finally, Gertrude gets
enough of Hamlet's behavior and asks him why he cannot get past this tragedy: " 'Tis not alone my
inky cloak, good mother, / Nor customary suits of solemn black, / Together with all forms, moods,
shapes of grief' " (Shakespeare I.ii. 80–82). Here, Hamlet explains that it is not fair to judge him
solely by his choice of clothing. He denies that his behavior or clothing represents his emotions on
the inside, since they are far from what is seen on the inside. In reality, Hamlet is in a strong
mourning state and his sorrow cannot be explained. Ultimately, Hamlet's clothing represents the
overall sadness towards the death of his father and signifies

Hamlet, By William Shakespeare
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the character Hamlet must deal with both external and
internal conflict. Hamlet encounters many struggles and has trouble finding a way to deal with
them. With so many corrupt people in his life, Hamlet feels as if there is no one that he can trust
and begins to isolate himself from others. A result from this isolation leadsHamlet to become
melancholy. Hamlet struggles with suicidal thoughts, wants to kill King Claudius, and is distraught
over his mother's hasty marriage with his uncle Claudius. Hamlets contemplation of ending his life
shows an inward conflict within himself. In his first soliloquy, he debates whether he should commit
suicide. "To be, or not to be– / that is the question: / whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer/ the
slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, / or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing,
end them" (3.1. lines 64–68 Shakespeare). He questions why he should live with all of this chaos but
overcomes this internal conflict because he acknowledges that in his religion suicide is a sin. "O,
that this too, too sullied flesh would melt, / Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew, / or that the
everlasting had not fixed His canon 'gainst (self–slaughter). O God! God!" (1.2. lines 133–136
Shakespeare). This soliloquy signifies the reality of Hamlet s internal conflict and also shows the
reality of his external conflict with the society he is surrounded by. This declamation establishes

Is Life too Short to Wait? Hamlet had every reason in the world to kill his uncle turned stepfather,
Claudius. Once he would have been able to explain the truth about his uncle's dirty deeds, nobody
would have been upset with his actions. So the question remains, why did Hamlet take so long to
take action? For the majority of the play, Hamlet thinks up and talks about all the ways he could get
revenge, but it isn't really until act three that Hamlet takes the first step in exposing Claudius'
treacherous ways. "If the prince had gone naturally to work in the first act, the play would have
ended right there," said Thomas Hammer (Nardo 61). Hammer couldn't have been more accurate.

feels overwhelmed by the task imposed by his father's ghost, after first boasting that his revenge

prevalent in his third soliloquy, "O what a rogue and peasant slave am I! ... Yet I / A dull and

Persuasive Essay On Hamlet
Imagine your father was killed by your uncle so that way he can become King and then later
married your mother. All of this happens in little of 2 months and you aren't suppose to act on it.
Hamlet, in the famous play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, doesn't take the news well like any
person wouldnВґt. Once he learns that Claudius, his uncle, was behind the work of his father dying,
he was determined to make his uncle regret it. Hamlet demonstrates how even those who seek
revenge because they think of what cruel things others have done, they also come into rude
awakenings. As Hamlet became increasingly mad about the situation he tried to get any opportunity
to try and expose and kill Claudius. Hamlet sets up a play that everyone attends to try and expose
Claudius. When the play goes on, Claudius stands up and removes himself when the death is
revealed, and that was enough exposure for Hamlet. Hamlet later finds Claudius in the confession
booth and thinks that is the perfect time to kill him. Hamlet puts the knife...show more content...

Essay on Hamlet- The Characters
Hamlet
The prince of Denmark, and a student at the University of Wittenberg. At the beginning of the play,
Hamlet's father, King Hamlet, has recently died, and his mother, Queen Gertrude, has married the
new king, Hamlet's uncle Claudius. Hamlet is melancholy, bitter, and cynical, full of hatred for his
uncle and disgust at his mother for marrying him. When the ghost of Hamlet's father appears and
claims to have been murdered by Claudius, Hamlet becomes obsessed with avenging his father's
death but keeps thinking of reasons why he should wait before killing ClaudiusВ—then chastizes
himself for failing to act boldly. Hamlet is a character of contradictions. He admires characters like
Fortinbras and the Player King, who behave passionately...show more content...
Polonius
The Lord Chamberlain of Claudius's court, and the father of Laertes and Ophelia. Polonius has good
intentions, but he tends to be somewhat conniving and underhanded. He frequently leaps to the
wrong conclusions, and his speeches are comically pompous and long–winded. He is completely
incapable of figuring out what Hamlet is up to.
Horatio
Hamlet's close friend, who studied with the prince at the University of Wittenberg. Hamlet trusts
Horatio above any of the other characters, valuing him for his even temper and
equanimityВ—qualities that Hamlet seems to despise in himself. Horatio is loyal and helpful to
Hamlet throughout the play. After Hamlet's death, Horatio remains alive to tell Hamlet's story.
Ophelia
Polonius's daughter, a beautiful young woman with whom Hamlet has been in love. A sweet and
innocent young girl, Ophelia dutifully strives to obey her father and her brother, Laertes, allowing
Polonius to use her in his scheme to spy on Hamlet. When her father dies, her sanity unravels, and in
her madness she paints a scathing picture of young men as sexually exploitative and unfaithful, and
her mad speeches about flowers conceal implied condemnations of Claudius and Gertrude.
Laertes
Polonius's son and Ophelia's brother, a young man who spends much of the play in France.
Passionate and quick to action, Laertes is a foil for the reflective and agonized Hamlet.

Essay on Hamlet’s Pride in Shakespeare’s Hamlet
In William Shakespeare's tragic drama Hamlet, the hero, Hamlet, appears to be guilty of hubris, an
overstepping of the bounds of both his and humanity's destinies, which ultimately leads to his
downfall. Reading the play with a consideration as to how Hamlet's hubris manifests itself sheds
light on why he performs certain actions, and simultaneously enlightens the reader to the dangers of
attempting to overstep the confines of humanity. In this essay, I will prove thatHamlet has extreme
pride, and is therefore guilty of hubris; in accordance with Harold Skulsky's assertion in his article,
""I Know My Course": Hamlet's Confidence," Hamlet is hubristic because while he believes that his
own soul is impenetrable based on his external...show more content...
Yet, despite Hamlet's initial implication that it is humanly impossible to decipher another's inner
nature based on his or her external actions, it quickly becomes apparent that Hamlet feels that
doing so is not outside of his ability. When his father's ghost reveals that Claudius murdered Old
Hamlet, Hamlet declares, "O my prophetic soul!" as if he knew, based on Claudius' exterior, that
Claudius killed Old Hamlet (1.5.40). A prophetic soul "dreams on things to come and inspires a man
with second sight," and Hamlet's claim implies that he feels he has abilities beyond those of
humanity (Skulsky 479). From this point on, the pride Hamlet displays in this scene begins to swell.
One of the first instances in which Hamlet proudly attempts to discover the nature of others based on
their external actions is when he is talking with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern upon their arrival at
Elsinore (2.2.250–282). In an attempt to decide whether they will "deal justly" with him, he asks
broad, "throwaway" questions to test how "spontaneous or hesitant" their confession that the King
sent for them will be (Skulsky 481). Based on their external appearances, Hamlet confidently
determines that he cannot trust them, and in doing so, oversteps the boundaries of humanity,
because "God alone can compel [people] . . . to give [them]selves away

Essay On Hamlet Going Crazy
Can you imagine acting like a whole different person? Throughout the play, the bizarre Hamlet
claims to pretend to be insane. Many people believe that Hamlet is not acting psychotic but others
believe that he is actually out of this world psychotic. There are many reasons that prove that
Hamlet is going mad. Firstly, because he is acting crazy in front of many people, he may even be
crazy. Also, it would be normal for him to go mad because of how his life is going. For instance,
his world turned upside down the second his father died. Secondly, what he does makes him seem
more like he is delirious. A time that madeHamlet seen more insane is when he was talking to
Ophelia as if he didn't love her. Thirdly, Hamlet telling us his thoughts make...show more content...
However, one of the things that made him a lunatic was how he acted in front of tons of people.
As spoken before, his world has turned on him because of everything happening in his life. His
dad has been brutally murdered and his uncle known as the malicious Claudius who married his
unhappy mother became the king of Denmark. Later on he encounters a ghost who tells him who
he is and how he died sadly. The story about how the eerie ghost died was about the superior king
sleeping by a beautiful garden and suddenly a vicious snake poisoned him. Furthermore, it was the
evil man who wears the bright crown and rules Denmark. After he found out that the creepy ghost
was his mighty father, he wanted to avenge his dad. Due to this, he had to murder his cruel uncle
because he was the person who killed his innocent father.
With this in mind, Hamlet has a heart broken feeling and wants to seek vengeance. In additon, he
has a duty ethics or duty obligations. To change the topic, the young Hamlet has acted in front of
many people. Since people saw the other side of him, they were terrified but they also thought he was
very amusing. A time when the brilliant Hamlet was acting in front of people was with the two
foolish friends known as Rosencrantz and Guildenstren. In addition, they were just agreeing to
whatever they were asked to try to convince Hamlet to do

Essay on Hamlet – the Irony
Hamlet – the Irony
The existence of considerable irony within the Shakespearean tragedy Hamlet is a fact recognized
by most literary critics. This paper will examine the play for instances of irony and their
interpretation by critics.
In his essay "O'erdoing Termagant" Howard Felperin comments on Hamlet's "ironic consciousness"
of the fact that he is unable to quickly execute the command of the ghost:
Our own intuition of the creative or re–creative act that issued in the play also assumes a struggle
with the literary past, but one of a more complex nature. It would seem to be Hamlet who is unable
to impose successfully the model of an old play upon the intractable material of his present life, and

Hamlet is present at the court gathering –– dressed in black, the color of mourning, for his deceased
father. He is not a man of the world, but rather demurring and thoughtful and by himself. His first
words say that Claudius is "A little more than kin and less than kind," indicating a dissimilarity in
values between the new king and himself, thus, in a sense, relegating himself to the position of an
outcast, one who counts for nothing. And, incredibly, he is the greatest of people, in terms of what
really matters in life – one's spiritual ideals or morals. This outcast is a prince; he is a genius. His
soliloquies confront problems "which most easily besets men of genius" (Coleridge 345), and they
manifest a rare "human wisdom" (Frye 37).
The ghost reveals that King Hamlet was murdered by Claudius; Hamlet swears to avenge this
deed. With the ghost's exhortation, Hamlet ironically "is not to be allowed simply to endure a
rotten world, he must also act in it" (Mack 258); the one who least wants to be part of the world
must engross himself fully with the things of the world in order to validate the ghost's accusation
and then carry out his wish. In his essay, "Reforming the Role," Mark Rose discusses the irony
involved with the ghost's appearance:
The ghost binds Hamlet to vengeance, but there is another and more subtle way in which the spirit

Essay On Femininity In Hamlet
Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, reflects some of the societal issues that had plagued his time, most
notably the imbalance of the standards between men and women. Hamlet's attitude and actions
towards women reveal the effects of a patriarchal society. In addition, it highlights the inward
struggle Hamlet faces in finding the balance between his femininity and abiding to the standards of
their society. Hamlet's poor treatment of women helps pave the way for awareness of the social
injustice, dysfunctional relationships and miscommunications that contribute toward the tragic
ending. Hamlet's treatment of women was normal for his time period and typical for a patriarchal
society. His over–exertion of control and dominance over the two female characters,...show more

Old Hamlet was an example of masculinity and what Hamlet strived to be. After his death,
Hamlet's masculinity can be put into question as he doesn't sustain the typical standards of
behavior. He continues to hesitate and fails to fight and follow what others would do. In
comparison to the other men in the play, Hamlet is not completely up to par with his masculinity.
Laertes and Polonius worry more for Ophelia's future, an effect of the patriarchal society and the
problems it created for the opportunities of women. Differently, Hamlet worries for the conditions
of humanity and the universe, but still desires for Ophelia to be safe from the corrupt outside
world. Laertes and his eagerness to duel Hamlet exemplifies the disparity between them as it is
something the latter would not do under prior conditions. The pressure for Hamlet to be a man and
conform to societal standards is present, especially with Claudius scolding him for acting
womanish, months after his father's death. This only strengthens Hamlet's hatred for him and
reinforces the conflict in his feminine and masculine sides. His hatred for women is also reflected
by this as he feels as though they are the reason for why he acts this way and cannot be fully

Understanding Hamlet's Famous Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet
Hamlet's classsic "To be or not to be..."(Hamlet, prince of Denmark, 3.1.57) speech really shows
who he is. Obviously Hamlet is horribly depressed. We have already seen several examples of this,
but this speech gives us a clear picture of his sadness. More importantly however, his speech shows
his weakness and indecisiveness. Hamlet is consistently melancholy, but he never really acts on it;
he just kind of wallows around, full of self–pity and loathing. Finally, it gives us Hamlet's reason for
not committing suicide. Throughout the play he seems to wish for death and here we find out why
he doesn't bring it on himself. This also gives us a window into his personality. This...show more

As though he only wishes to rest and forget his troubled soul. We see here for the first time why
he wants to die. It is not that he feels there is too much pain or strife in life, but that he is tired
with dealing with it and exausted by his efforts. Hamlet says in this speech, in as plain of
language as he can, that he is depressed and wants to die. But, he has said that before. This speech
gives us our first clear indication as to his reason for craving death. More interestingly, Hamlet
shows here his fundamental cowardice and fear. He has been going on for the whole play about
how terrible his life is and how much pain and suffering he has had to endure, and he starts out the
speech on this note. This is the first indication of his weakness. Hamlet it seems would rather
bemoan his troubles than solve them. He goes on and on about his crappy life but rarely, if ever,
even tries to do anything about it. Even in his desire for death he will speak but not act. He has
wished for ceath at least ten times during the play, but when it comes right down to it Hamlet is to
scared to act on his desire. He doesn't decide against suicide because of some noble realization
(that life is far to precious to be wasted for example), he is just too scared of the afterlife. Hamlet,
in the play up to this point, claims to be in dire straits but his paralyzing fear keeps him from action.
He would rather suffer with

Themes Of Love In Hamlet
The themes found throughout Hamlet are complex, but one that stands out from the rest: love; the
third most said word in Hamlet is love; this alone can show that major impact of this theme. Love
affects the way each of the characters perceive each other and also affects many situations in the
play love can also drive passion, which in turn drives revenge; this is well shown in Hamlet and plays
out in the emotions of the characters. Hypocritical love can show the faults of the relationship while
real love can show the important relations that the characters has with one–another. These two
different types of loves can be confusing to the audience when the actor or actress portrays their
character in a reverse manner than the play was actually written. Revenge can be left from the
aftermath of these two different types of love.
True Love
Claudius shows a realistic human love at certain times. He is genuinely sorry for King Hamlet's'
death, and shows some signs of love for Gertrude. In the play "true love" is best shown by the
relationship between King Hamlet and Hamlet or Hamlet and Ophelia; "I lov'd Ophelia. Forty
thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love Make up my sum. What wilt thou do for
her?" (Act 5.1.285–287) Even though at this point in the play Ophelia was deceased Hamlet's love
for her is still lived on, which displays true, genuine love. He doesn't deny his love for her and he
defends her. Earlier in the play he said that he had no emotion for her and did not love her but the
audience finds out that he was trying to protect her through this odd method. While talking to his
mother, Hamlet is inraged for her marrying his uncle. He loves Gertrude even though it is hard to
see. He would not speak to her if he did not still care for Gertrude deeply.
"O, throw away the worser part of it, and live the purer with the other half.
Good night. But go not to mine uncle's bed.
Assume a virtue if you have it not. That monster, custom, who all sense doth eat, of habits devil, is
angel yet in this:

3.4.178–186)

Analysis of Hamlet Essay
Hamlet is a suspenseful play that introduces the topic of tragedy. Throughout the play, Hamlet
displays anger, uncertainty, and obsession with death. Although Hamlet is unaware of it, these
emotions cause the mishaps that occur throughout the play. These emotions combined with his
unawareness are the leading basis for the tragic hero's flaws. These flaws lead Hamlet not to be a bad
man, but a regular form of imperfection that comes along with being human. When Hamlet is first
encountered with the ghost that resembles his father, it is revealed that his uncle Claudius might have
been the cause of his father's death. Hamlet is then confused about what he should believe and how

When he does act, he prefers to do it recklessly and violently. This is a flaw that Hamlet cannot
deny. He knows that it is unjust, but only cares about avenging his father's death. Hamlet is not
only angered with the fact of his father's death, but also with his mother's decision to marry
Claudius. Devastated by his mother's decision to marry so soon after her husband's death, Hamlet
becomes skeptical about women in general. He shows a particular obsession with what he
perceives to be a connection with female sexuality and moral corruption. He almost develops
hatred towards women because of his mother's decision. This hatred occurs and is shown with his
relationship with Ophelia. He urges Ophelia to go to a nunnery rather than experience the
dishonesty of sexuality. This hinders Hamlet from experiencing a love that is really needed at this
time of his loss. One can say that this is another flaw, which Hamlet is unaware of. Throughout the
course of the play, Hamlet is also obsessed with the mystery of death. In the beginning of the play,
he states that he is unsure where one ends up after they die. Later into the play, he makes a reference
to the afterlife contradicting his first approach. When he attempts to kill

Hamlet A Hero Essay
Not All Heroes Wear Capes Many view Hamlet, the main character, in Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet
as a hero. He portrays characteristics that prove to the reader that he does possess heroic qualities.
Although, it is a struggle for him throughout the play, but as he goes through life and learns new
ways of coping things, he develops new characteristics that he didn't have in the beginning. Hamlet
learns to overcome his anxiety, depression, and anger. In the end, he learns how to be calm and
collected. The way Hamlet learns how to handle internal conflicts throughout the play, shows the
readers a realistic view of the difficult encounters one may have when learning to cope with
different issues. Hamlet is arguably one of the greatest dramatic characters to be created. As he
learns of his father's death, he starts to over analyze ever little detail causing him to create scenarios
in his mind that give me anxiety. His mother notices his anger, but Hamlet makes it known that the
distress he is feeling over–powers his actions. He says, "Together with all the forms, moods, shapes
of grief... for they are the actions that a man might play; but I have that within which passes show,
these but the trappings and the suits of woe" (ACT I, ii). He is angry at his mother because she
remarried that same man that killed his father. Hamlet starts to see his father's ghost and she cannot.
She then starts to tell Hamlet how he has offended his father, as in Claudius. When Hamlet is

Essay On Hamlet And Revenge
Losing someone can cause you to do unspeakable things, in the heat of the moment grief can fuel
the need for revenge, but an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet
and 'Gladiator' directed by Riley Scott both antagonists fuel the protagonists to seek revenge.
Hamlet's quest for revenge is initiated by the death of his father in the same way that Maximus'
revenge began with the death of his wife and son.
Hamlets plot for revenge begins with the demise of his father. " So art thou to revenge when thou
shall hear." 1.5.25 In this quote Hamlet discovers the ghost is his father and his death was murder.
Once hamlet is made aware of who the murder is the ghost then helps him plan how he will get
his comeuppance towards his uncle. This scene is a stepping stone to the plot due to the fact
Hamlet discovers that he is talking to his father and that he must avenge his father's death. The
ghost enlightens hamlet to information he otherwise would not have known. Hamlet begins to act
differently in order to follow through on his plan. " though this is madness, yet there is method
in't" 2.2.195. Hamlet gives off a fake persona in which he is insane, well knowing no one would
suspect him to be a murder. Hamlet uses this knowledge to outsmart most of Denmark allow the
loss of his father to be his reasoning towards how he is now mad. Hamlet was extremely close to
his father knowing he was murdered forced hamlet to take action similarly Maximus lives only for

Essay On Happiness In Hamlet
Individuals are often put into situations in which they must compromise their happiness to achieve
what they desire. The loss of this happiness can be extremely detrimental to the individual's
emotional state. In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare explores the idea of how happiness can
be conceded in the pursuit of ones' goals and how conceding this happiness has negative impacts.
Hamlet, the main character of the play, is pushed into a situation where he must murder his uncle to
avenge his father. In Hamlets' pursuit of this goal, he sacrifices his freedom, his love, and his overall
well–being, leaving him an emotionally broken individual.
Hamlet is a free young man who, through a series of circumstances, compromises his freedom and

Hamlet loves Ophelia from the bottom of his heart, but the situation that Hamlet has been put into
forces him to break this relationship. The fact that Hamlet is the heir to a kingdom and Ophelia is
of a lower social class shows that this is not just a superficial relationship. Polonius questions the
sincerity of Hamlet's love and argues with Ophelia over it. In response to Polonius, Ophelia explains
that, "He hath importuned me with love/ In honorable fashion" (1.3.109–110). Ophelia tries to
explain to Polonius that Hamlet is honourable and that the love that he expresses towards her is not
fraudulent in any way. Ophelia and Hamlet have a very loving relationship, in which the two of
them are happy. In Hamlet's pursuit of killing King Claudius, their relationship collapses. Hamlet
knows that if he is to kill the king, then he must separate himself from Ophelia. When Hamlet
encounters Ophelia he acts very impolite and insults Ophelia so that she will not associate with him
anymore. Hamlet says, "To a nunnery, go, and quickly too. Farewell" (3.1.139–140). With this
phrase, Hamlet is telling Ophelia to leave and to get away from him. Hamlet purposely pushes
Ophelia away to save her; he wants to ensure that she will not be hurt emotionally when Hamlet
finally goes ahead with his plan, and that she will not get in trouble for having a connection with a
conspirator. When Ophelia passes away we see that Hamlet is struck with grief and sorrow. At

Hamlet Compare And Contrast Essay
Compare and Contrast Essay Boxes are common inanimate objects that are found in most
households. They are used to store objects that are unwanted or to hold gifts for loved ones. The
theme of love in Hamlet on the other hand is an intense emotion that can not be found in every
relationship. So with all of their differences what makes them alike? Imagine that someone is
unpacking boxes and helping a friend move into their new place. They have just completed
unwrapping all of the dishes and glassware, but failed to see the newspaper that floated past the
trash can and onto the floor behind them. They step backwards and slip on the sheet of newspaper
and fall into a box. The box rips, and they land flat on their back. There is an audible gasp...show

Even though boxes have multiple uses, according to the article Boxes – Their Importance and Uses
:"Boxes are commonly used as storage." (The Green Book, 2012). Boxes are made to contain
things, so it would be expected that they would be strong and not easily broken. In some instances
the box may become fragile or worn out after being used multiple times. The same applies to the love
shown in hamlet. When people first fall in love the emotion is strong and the relationship can last
for what feels like forever as shown through Gertrude and King Hamlet's love. This is due to how
the "reward system is stimulated through very simple means," so the smallest of touches or "even
just thinking about" them can cause an "increase [in] elevated mood" (Fisher 2013). After time
passes the butterflies and intensity of emotions dies down and there needs to be more effort put
into the relationship to keep it going. This can cause break ups because of how little effort is put
into showing the other person that love still exists in the relationship. The longer a relationship
lasts the more fragile the connection and love between them gets, so if one person is not giving as
much effort as the other because they believe that the other person should do all of the work then
the relationship may fail. Through time and use both boxes and love can become so fragile that
they may not be able to be

Essay Topics On Hamlet

  • 1. Several critics' opinions on William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" remains relevant in today's society. The play touches on themes such as suicide, vengeance, the moral weakness of women, murder, issues and outcomes that are as common today as they were in Shakespeare's time. Some have stated that Shakespeare's `Hamlet' isn't relevant in society today that society has moved on. If this statement is true, then why are movies being made on `Hamlet' and why are students in schools and universities being made to study it"? The answer is that `Hamlet' is an exceptional adventure story full of suspense, conspiracy and murder. It is a story of a young Danish Prince whose tactic to reprisal his father's murder results ultimately in misfortune. `Hamlet' explores many problems that are relevant in society today. The main arguments are suicide, revenge, liability in women, murder, consequence and prospect. This argument is the backing for `Hamlet's' relevance in society today. They are visibly in today's society and have been progressively since Hamlet was ever written. Such arguments like suicide are clearly seen by people today, and it is increasing. The New York Times asked students to submit their performances of scenes from "Hamlet" via Instagram. They received close to 500 submissions. A statement from The New York times "Let it not be said that Shakespeare means nothing to young people". The anolage of Hamlet was performed 500 years ago. • 2. Essay about hamlet Hamlet One of the most unique elements of the Hamlet character is that he is so human. Many types of readers can identify with him. Hamlet is imperfect, and he is fretful. Hamlet has human properties, and it is his humanity that I intend to explore. Indeed it is these human qualities and imperfections that make his story so tragic. Another tragic part of the play is the plays irony. Irony is an important tool in the hands of the playwright to achieve both comical and/or dramatic effect. There is usually little reason for a tragedy to be funny, so Shakespeare has used this tool to add more tragedy to the play. I will investigate the nature of this irony. Also, I will investigate the types of conflict that play a major part in the play...show more content... One occurrence of irony I found particularly striking was the fact that Hamlet effectively maneuvers himself into the same position as Claudius. Claudius had attacked and killed a man who did not have the opportunity to defend himself, but when Hamlet kills Polonius, is he not guilty of the same? It is intriguing that both Claudius and Hamlet have killed fathers. It is interesting to see how these two completely different characters deal with this problem in different ways. Other interesting parallels I found are the numerous deaths by poison. Hamlet's father was murdered by Claudius with poison. In the final act, the queen is the first to be poisoned, by drinking from Hamlet's cup. Then, Hamlet is wounded by the poisoned tip of Laertes' sword. When they change swords, Hamlet gets the upper hand and Laertes is poisoned. When the queen dies, Laertes explains all to Hamlet, before he dies. Hamlet then kills Claudius before dying himself. It is ironic that, as Claudius is poisoned because of his own plotting, he had already signed his own death warrant when he killed Hamlet's father, the first tragic action of the play. There are only three people in this play who don't die by poisoning: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern meet their deaths in England, after being outsmarted by Hamlet. The third is Ophelia, who is drowned. There are three types of conflict I can identify in the play: 'man versus man', 'man versus nature' and 'man versus Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay on hamlet final Emma Johns Mrs. Tiffany Perkins English II Honors 14 May 2014 Hamlet Final Essay The tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare brilliantly recounts the tale of feigned and true madness as it delves into themes of betrayal, incest, revenge, moral corruption, and death. The play, set in the kingdom of Denmark, gives an account of how PrinceHamlet seeks exact revenge on his uncle Claudius, for murdering his own brother and Prince Hamlet's father. After assassinating King Hamlet, Claudius succeeds the throne and becomes joined in holy matrimony to King Hamlet's widow and Prince Hamlet's mother, Queen...show more content... Hamlet's image of Claudius reveals the extensive amount of disgust that he has for the man who has married his mother. Later on in the play, when actors arrive at the castle, Hamlet requests that they do a speech that he once heard. This speech happens to be the tale that Aenes told Dido about the murder of Priam. Hamlet starts the speech himself but then lets the actor take control who recites, "Unequal matched/ Pyrrhus at Priam drives.... The 'unnerved father falls"(2.2.458–461). Here, it is possible that Hamlet is comparing Pyrrhus to himself and Priam to Claudius. In the story of Pyrrhus and Priam, Pyrrhus has come to the city of Troy in order to avenge the death of his father by killing the Trojan King Priam. At one point in the tale, Pyrrhus hesitated with his sword in the air when he had the chance to kill Priam right then. This is similar to act three scene three where Hamlet almost takes Claudius' life with his dagger while he is praying but halts mid–strike. Another possibility is that Hamlet is comparing Pyrrhus to Claudius and Priam to King Hamlet. Even though Claudius didn't murder King Hamlet with a sword, they were unequally matched as King Hamlet was asleep when Claudius poisoned him. Hamlet is drawing a parallel between the murder of Prium by Pyrrhus, and the murder of his father at the hands of Claudius. The speech about Pyrrhus and Priam plays a very important role in the play. • 4. Essay on Hamlet and Tragedy Hamlet and Tragedy Hamlet: A Tragedy When you think of William Shakespeare, Hamlet is the first thing most people think of, as his work. Hamlet is also a classic example of a tragedy. In all tragedies the hero suffers, and usually dies at the end. All good pieces of literature written way back when, are usually tragedies. The most important element is the amount of free will the character has. In every tragedy, the character must display free will. If every action is controlled by a hero's destiny, then the hero's death can't be avoided, and in a tragedy the sad part is that it could. Hamlet's death could have been avoided many times. Hamlet had many...show more content... The tragic hero must possess many good traits, as well as one flaw, which eventually leads to his downfall. A tragic hero must be brave and noble. Hamlet is the perfect example of the tragic hero. Hamlet has all the good traits needed to be a tragic hero. He is brave and daring. One example of this is that when he went to England, he was taking a big risk and knew they were out to kill him. His loyalty to his father, was the reason he was so angry with Claudius and his Mother. Eric Bentley said that a Tragedy is dependent on comedy. Comic relief is used in tragedies to change the atmosphere of the reader, who is constantly focusing on the death and corruption of a tragedy. If a play were full of the death and sorrow, as in tragedies, it would make the reader very depressed and not like the play. Some examples of this in Hamlet, are in the Gravedigger Scene, Talking to the Skull and the Throwing of the book. Towards the end of the play, there are two scenes in the graveyard. One is when Hamlet picks up a skull, and the gravedigger tells him that the skull belonged to Yorick, the old king's jester. Hamlet tells Horatio that he knew Yorick, and then realizes what we all become after we die, dust. He then plays with the idea of life and death, and describes the finality of it. The gravedigger scene is the tragic conclusion of the play. The second scene of comedy in this scene is when the gravediggers argue whether Ophelia should be allowed to be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Hamlet Analysis Essay On Hamlet Shakespeare's play, "Hamlet", is an intriguing and intricate drama about an individual who wants to avenge the death of his father. Prince Hamlet's father, King Hamlet, was once king and the throne was inherited by his evil brother, King Claudius. In addition to inheriting the throne, Claudius has married Prince Hamlet's mother, Gertrude, which is perceived as weird and unlawful. Interestingly, Prince Hamlet has cohesive evidence that King Claudius is responsible for the death of his father. As a result, Prince Hamlet's main goal is to kill Claudius as revenge for killing his father. King Hamlet's ghost constantly appears in the play, and it encourages Prince Hamlet to commit the murder. While attempting to kill Claudius, Hamlet portrays...show more content... Hamlet feels pressured and startled by the ghost because he knows that he needs to get revenge without fumbling. In all, the ghost's presence represents memory and death, which contributes to his overall perceived mad state. Shakespeare uses Hamlet's clothing to express his grief and sadness towards the death of his father. Since he is the only one that wears black in the court, Gertrude and Claudius begin to get angry and believe that his choice of clothing acts as an interruption to their state of happiness. Essentially, Claudius wants Hamlet to completely forget about his father and move on, which is impossible and Hamlet gets more irritated. The court only sees Hamlet from an outside perspective, and as a result, it is tough to judge someone on the inside. Finally, Gertrude gets enough of Hamlet's behavior and asks him why he cannot get past this tragedy: " 'Tis not alone my inky cloak, good mother, / Nor customary suits of solemn black, / Together with all forms, moods, shapes of grief' " (Shakespeare I.ii. 80–82). Here, Hamlet explains that it is not fair to judge him solely by his choice of clothing. He denies that his behavior or clothing represents his emotions on the inside, since they are far from what is seen on the inside. In reality, Hamlet is in a strong mourning state and his sorrow cannot be explained. Ultimately, Hamlet's clothing represents the overall sadness towards the death of his father and signifies Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Hamlet, By William Shakespeare In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the character Hamlet must deal with both external and internal conflict. Hamlet encounters many struggles and has trouble finding a way to deal with them. With so many corrupt people in his life, Hamlet feels as if there is no one that he can trust and begins to isolate himself from others. A result from this isolation leadsHamlet to become melancholy. Hamlet struggles with suicidal thoughts, wants to kill King Claudius, and is distraught over his mother's hasty marriage with his uncle Claudius. Hamlets contemplation of ending his life shows an inward conflict within himself. In his first soliloquy, he debates whether he should commit suicide. "To be, or not to be– / that is the question: / whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer/ the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, / or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing, end them" (3.1. lines 64–68 Shakespeare). He questions why he should live with all of this chaos but overcomes this internal conflict because he acknowledges that in his religion suicide is a sin. "O, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt, / Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew, / or that the everlasting had not fixed His canon 'gainst (self–slaughter). O God! God!" (1.2. lines 133–136 Shakespeare). This soliloquy signifies the reality of Hamlet s internal conflict and also shows the reality of his external conflict with the society he is surrounded by. Hamlet had every reason in the world to kill his uncle turned stepfather, Claudius. Once he would have been able to explain the truth about his uncle's dirty deeds, nobody would have been upset with his actions. So the question remains, why did Hamlet take so long to take action? For the majority of the play, Hamlet thinks up and talks about all the ways he could get revenge, but it isn't really until act three that Hamlet takes the first step in exposing Claudius' treacherous ways. On many occasions, he expresses the guilt in his inactivity. This is most prevalent in his third soliloquy, "O what a rogue and peasant slave am I! ... Yet I / A dull and muddy–mettled rascal peak / Like John–a–dreams, unpregnant of my cause..." (Shakespeare 134). This depressive illness was most likely not present his entire life, however. • 8. Persuasive Essay On Hamlet Imagine your father was killed by your uncle so that way he can become King and then later married your mother. All of this happens in little of 2 months and you aren't suppose to act on it. Hamlet, in the famous play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, doesn't take the news well like any person wouldnВґt. Once he learns that Claudius, his uncle, was behind the work of his father dying, he was determined to make his uncle regret it. Hamlet demonstrates how even those who seek revenge because they think of what cruel things others have done, they also come into rude awakenings. As Hamlet became increasingly mad about the situation he tried to get any opportunity to try and expose and kill Claudius. Hamlet sets up a play that everyone attends to try and expose Claudius. Hamlet is melancholy, bitter, and cynical, full of hatred for his uncle and disgust at his mother for marrying him. When the ghost of Hamlet's father appears and claims to have been murdered by Claudius, Hamlet becomes obsessed with avenging his father's death but keeps thinking of reasons why he should wait before killing ClaudiusВ—then chastizes himself for failing to act boldly. Horatio Hamlet's close friend, who studied with the prince at the University of Wittenberg. Hamlet trusts Horatio above any of the other characters, valuing him for his even temper and equanimityВ—qualities that Hamlet seems to despise in himself. Horatio is loyal and helpful to Hamlet throughout the play. After Hamlet's death, Horatio remains alive to tell Hamlet's story. A sweet and innocent young girl, Ophelia dutifully strives to obey her father and her brother, Laertes, allowing Polonius to use her in his scheme to spy on Hamlet. When her father dies, her sanity unravels, and in her madness she paints a scathing picture of young men as sexually exploitative and unfaithful, and her mad speeches about flowers conceal implied condemnations of Claudius and Gertrude. • 10. Essay on Hamlet’s Pride in Shakespeare’s Hamlet In William Shakespeare's tragic drama Hamlet, the hero, Hamlet, appears to be guilty of hubris, an overstepping of the bounds of both his and humanity's destinies, which ultimately leads to his downfall. Reading the play with a consideration as to how Hamlet's hubris manifests itself sheds light on why he performs certain actions, and simultaneously enlightens the reader to the dangers of attempting to overstep the confines of humanity. In this essay, I will prove thatHamlet has extreme pride, and is therefore guilty of hubris; in accordance with Harold Skulsky's assertion in his article, ""I Know My Course": Hamlet's Confidence," Hamlet is hubristic because while he believes that his own soul is impenetrable based on his external...show more content... Yet, despite Hamlet's initial implication that it is humanly impossible to decipher another's inner nature based on his or her external actions, it quickly becomes apparent that Hamlet feels that doing so is not outside of his ability. When his father's ghost reveals that Claudius murdered Old Hamlet, Hamlet declares, "O my prophetic soul!" as if he knew, based on Claudius' exterior, that Claudius killed Old Hamlet (1.5.40). A prophetic soul "dreams on things to come and inspires a man with second sight," and Hamlet's claim implies that he feels he has abilities beyond those of humanity (Skulsky 479). From this point on, the pride Hamlet displays in this scene begins to swell. One of the first instances in which Hamlet proudly attempts to discover the nature of others based on their external actions is when he is talking with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern upon their arrival at Elsinore (2.2.250–282). In an attempt to decide whether they will "deal justly" with him, he asks broad, "throwaway" questions to test how "spontaneous or hesitant" their confession that the King sent for them will be (Skulsky 481). Based on their external appearances, Hamlet confidently determines that he cannot trust them, and in doing so, oversteps the boundaries of humanity, because "God alone can compel [people] . . . to give [them]selves away Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Essay On Hamlet Going Crazy Can you imagine acting like a whole different person? Throughout the play, the bizarre Hamlet claims to pretend to be insane. Many people believe that Hamlet is not acting psychotic but others believe that he is actually out of this world psychotic. There are many reasons that prove that Hamlet is going mad. Firstly, because he is acting crazy in front of many people, he may even be crazy. Also, it would be normal for him to go mad because of how his life is going. For instance, his world turned upside down the second his father died. Secondly, what he does makes him seem more like he is delirious. A time that madeHamlet seen more insane is when he was talking to Ophelia as if he didn't love her. Thirdly, Hamlet telling us his thoughts make...show more content... Later on he encounters a ghost who tells him who he is and how he died sadly. The story about how the eerie ghost died was about the superior king sleeping by a beautiful garden and suddenly a vicious snake poisoned him. Furthermore, it was the evil man who wears the bright crown and rules Denmark. After he found out that the creepy ghost was his mighty father, he wanted to avenge his dad. Due to this, he had to murder his cruel uncle because he was the person who killed his innocent father. With this in mind, Hamlet has a heart broken feeling and wants to seek vengeance. In additon, he has a duty ethics or duty obligations. To change the topic, the young Hamlet has acted in front of many people. Since people saw the other side of him, they were terrified but they also thought he was very amusing. • 12. Essay on Hamlet – the Irony Hamlet – the Irony The existence of considerable irony within the Shakespearean tragedy Hamlet is a fact recognized by most literary critics. This paper will examine the play for instances of irony and their interpretation by critics. In his essay "O'erdoing Termagant" Howard Felperin comments on Hamlet's "ironic consciousness" of the fact that he is unable to quickly execute the command of the ghost: Our own intuition of the creative or re–creative act that issued in the play also assumes a struggle with the literary past, but one of a more complex nature. It would seem to be Hamlet who is unable to impose successfully the model of an old play upon the intractable material of his present life, and ...show more content... Hamlet is present at the court gathering –– dressed in black, the color of mourning, for his deceased father. He is not a man of the world, but rather demurring and thoughtful and by himself. His first words say that Claudius is "A little more than kin and less than kind," indicating a dissimilarity in values between the new king and himself, thus, in a sense, relegating himself to the position of an outcast, one who counts for nothing. And, incredibly, he is the greatest of people, in terms of what really matters in life – one's spiritual ideals or morals. This outcast is a prince; he is a genius. His soliloquies confront problems "which most easily besets men of genius" (Coleridge 345), and they manifest a rare "human wisdom" (Frye 37). The ghost reveals that King Hamlet was murdered by Claudius; Hamlet swears to avenge this deed. With the ghost's exhortation, Hamlet ironically "is not to be allowed simply to endure a rotten world, he must also act in it" (Mack 258); the one who least wants to be part of the world must engross himself fully with the things of the world in order to validate the ghost's accusation and then carry out his wish. In his essay, "Reforming the Role," Mark Rose discusses the irony involved with the ghost's appearance: The ghost binds Hamlet to vengeance, but there is another and more subtle way in which the spirit Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Essay On Femininity In Hamlet Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, reflects some of the societal issues that had plagued his time, most notably the imbalance of the standards between men and women. Hamlet's attitude and actions towards women reveal the effects of a patriarchal society. In addition, it highlights the inward struggle Hamlet faces in finding the balance between his femininity and abiding to the standards of their society. Hamlet's poor treatment of women helps pave the way for awareness of the social injustice, dysfunctional relationships and miscommunications that contribute toward the tragic ending. Hamlet's treatment of women was normal for his time period and typical for a patriarchal society. His over–exertion of control and dominance over the two female characters,...show more content... Old Hamlet was an example of masculinity and what Hamlet strived to be. After his death, Hamlet's masculinity can be put into question as he doesn't sustain the typical standards of behavior. He continues to hesitate and fails to fight and follow what others would do. In comparison to the other men in the play, Hamlet is not completely up to par with his masculinity. Laertes and Polonius worry more for Ophelia's future, an effect of the patriarchal society and the problems it created for the opportunities of women. Differently, Hamlet worries for the conditions of humanity and the universe, but still desires for Ophelia to be safe from the corrupt outside world. Laertes and his eagerness to duel Hamlet exemplifies the disparity between them as it is something the latter would not do under prior conditions. The pressure for Hamlet to be a man and conform to societal standards is present, especially with Claudius scolding him for acting womanish, months after his father's death. This only strengthens Hamlet's hatred for him and reinforces the conflict in his feminine and masculine sides. His hatred for women is also reflected by this as he feels as though they are the reason for why he acts this way and cannot be fully accepted by Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Understanding Hamlet's Famous Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet Hamlet's classsic "To be or not to be..."(Hamlet, prince of Denmark, 3.1.57) speech really shows who he is. Obviously Hamlet is horribly depressed. We have already seen several examples of this, but this speech gives us a clear picture of his sadness. More importantly however, his speech shows his weakness and indecisiveness. Hamlet is consistently melancholy, but he never really acts on it; he just kind of wallows around, full of self–pity and loathing. Finally, it gives us Hamlet's reason for not committing suicide. Throughout the play he seems to wish for death and here we find out why he doesn't bring it on himself. This also gives us a window into his personality. This...show more content... As though he only wishes to rest and forget his troubled soul. We see here for the first time why he wants to die. It is not that he feels there is too much pain or strife in life, but that he is tired with dealing with it and exausted by his efforts. Hamlet says in this speech, in as plain of language as he can, that he is depressed and wants to die. But, he has said that before. This speech gives us our first clear indication as to his reason for craving death. More interestingly, Hamlet shows here his fundamental cowardice and fear. He has been going on for the whole play about how terrible his life is and how much pain and suffering he has had to endure, and he starts out the speech on this note. This is the first indication of his weakness. Hamlet it seems would rather bemoan his troubles than solve them. He goes on and on about his crappy life but rarely, if ever, even tries to do anything about it. Even in his desire for death he will speak but not act. He has wished for ceath at least ten times during the play, but when it comes right down to it Hamlet is to scared to act on his desire. He doesn't decide against suicide because of some noble realization (that life is far to precious to be wasted for example), he is just too scared of the afterlife. Hamlet, in the play up to this point, claims to be in dire straits but his paralyzing fear keeps him from action. He would rather suffer with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Themes Of Love In Hamlet The themes found throughout Hamlet are complex, but one that stands out from the rest: love; the third most said word in Hamlet is love; this alone can show that major impact of this theme. Love affects the way each of the characters perceive each other and also affects many situations in the play love can also drive passion, which in turn drives revenge; this is well shown in Hamlet and plays out in the emotions of the characters. Hypocritical love can show the faults of the relationship while real love can show the important relations that the characters has with one–another. These two different types of loves can be confusing to the audience when the actor or actress portrays their character in a reverse manner than the play was actually written. Revenge can be left from the aftermath of these two different types of love. True Love Claudius shows a realistic human love at certain times. He is genuinely sorry for King Hamlet's' death, and shows some signs of love for Gertrude. In the play "true love" is best shown by the relationship between King Hamlet and Hamlet or Hamlet and Ophelia; "I lov'd Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love Make up my sum. What wilt thou do for her?" (Act 5.1.285–287) Even though at this point in the play Ophelia was deceased Hamlet's love for her is still lived on, which displays true, genuine love. He doesn't deny his love for her and he defends her. Earlier in the play he said that he had no emotion for her and did not love her but the audience finds out that he was trying to protect her through this odd method. While talking to his mother, Hamlet is inraged for her marrying his uncle. He loves Gertrude even though it is hard to see. He would not speak to her if he did not still care for Gertrude deeply. "O, throw away the worser part of it, and live the purer with the other half. Good night. But go not to mine uncle's bed. Assume a virtue if you have it not. That monster, custom, who all sense doth eat, of habits devil, is angel yet in this: That to use of actions fair and good he likewise gives a frock or livery that aptly is put on." (Act 3.4.178–186) The audience sees that he insults Claudius and warns his mother about how Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Analysis of Hamlet Essay Hamlet is a suspenseful play that introduces the topic of tragedy. Throughout the play, Hamlet displays anger, uncertainty, and obsession with death. Although Hamlet is unaware of it, these emotions cause the mishaps that occur throughout the play. These emotions combined with his unawareness are the leading basis for the tragic hero's flaws. These flaws lead Hamlet not to be a bad man, but a regular form of imperfection that comes along with being human. He knows that it is unjust, but only cares about avenging his father's death. Hamlet is not only angered with the fact of his father's death, but also with his mother's decision to marry Claudius. Devastated by his mother's decision to marry so soon after her husband's death, Hamlet becomes skeptical about women in general. He shows a particular obsession with what he perceives to be a connection with female sexuality and moral corruption. He almost develops hatred towards women because of his mother's decision. This hatred occurs and is shown with his relationship with Ophelia. He urges Ophelia to go to a nunnery rather than experience the dishonesty of sexuality. This hinders Hamlet from experiencing a love that is really needed at this time of his loss. One can say that this is another flaw, which Hamlet is unaware of. Throughout the course of the play, Hamlet is also obsessed with the mystery of death. In the beginning of the play, he states that he is unsure where one ends up after they die. Later into the play, he makes a reference to the afterlife contradicting his first approach. When he attempts to kill Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Hamlet A Hero Essay Not All Heroes Wear Capes Many view Hamlet, the main character, in Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet as a hero. He portrays characteristics that prove to the reader that he does possess heroic qualities. Although, it is a struggle for him throughout the play, but as he goes through life and learns new ways of coping things, he develops new characteristics that he didn't have in the beginning. Hamlet learns to overcome his anxiety, depression, and anger. In the end, he learns how to be calm and collected. The way Hamlet learns how to handle internal conflicts throughout the play, shows the readers a realistic view of the difficult encounters one may have when learning to cope with different issues. Hamlet is arguably one of the greatest dramatic characters to be created. As he learns of his father's death, he starts to over analyze ever little detail causing him to create scenarios in his mind that give me anxiety. His mother notices his anger, but Hamlet makes it known that the distress he is feeling over–powers his actions. He says, "Together with all the forms, moods, shapes of grief... for they are the actions that a man might play; but I have that within which passes show, these but the trappings and the suits of woe" (ACT I, ii). In William Shakespeare's Hamlet and 'Gladiator' directed by Riley Scott both antagonists fuel the protagonists to seek revenge. Hamlet's quest for revenge is initiated by the death of his father in the same way that Maximus' revenge began with the death of his wife and son. Hamlets plot for revenge begins with the demise of his father. " So art thou to revenge when thou shall hear." 1.5.25 In this quote Hamlet discovers the ghost is his father and his death was murder. Once hamlet is made aware of who the murder is the ghost then helps him plan how he will get his comeuppance towards his uncle. The loss of this happiness can be extremely detrimental to the individual's emotional state. In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare explores the idea of how happiness can be conceded in the pursuit of ones' goals and how conceding this happiness has negative impacts. Hamlet, the main character of the play, is pushed into a situation where he must murder his uncle to avenge his father. Hamlet loves Ophelia from the bottom of his heart, but the situation that Hamlet has been put into forces him to break this relationship. The fact that Hamlet is the heir to a kingdom and Ophelia is of a lower social class shows that this is not just a superficial relationship. Polonius questions the sincerity of Hamlet's love and argues with Ophelia over it. In response to Polonius, Ophelia explains that, "He hath importuned me with love/ In honorable fashion" (1.3.109–110). Ophelia tries to explain to Polonius that Hamlet is honourable and that the love that he expresses towards her is not fraudulent in any way. Ophelia and Hamlet have a very loving relationship, in which the two of them are happy. In Hamlet's pursuit of killing King Claudius, their relationship collapses. Hamlet knows that if he is to kill the king, then he must separate himself from Ophelia. When Hamlet encounters Ophelia he acts very impolite and insults Ophelia so that she will not associate with him anymore. Hamlet says, "To a nunnery, go, and quickly too. Farewell" (3.1.139–140). With this phrase, Hamlet is telling Ophelia to leave and to get away from him. Hamlet purposely pushes Ophelia away to save her; he wants to ensure that she will not be hurt emotionally when Hamlet finally goes ahead with his plan, and that she will not get in trouble for having a connection with a conspirator. • 20. Hamlet Compare And Contrast Essay Compare and Contrast Essay Boxes are common inanimate objects that are found in most households. They are used to store objects that are unwanted or to hold gifts for loved ones. The theme of love in Hamlet on the other hand is an intense emotion that can not be found in every relationship. So with all of their differences what makes them alike? Imagine that someone is unpacking boxes and helping a friend move into their new place. They have just completed unwrapping all of the dishes and glassware, but failed to see the newspaper that floated past the trash can and onto the floor behind them. They step backwards and slip on the sheet of newspaper and fall into a box. The box rips, and they land flat on their back. There is an audible gasp...show more content... Even though boxes have multiple uses, according to the article Boxes – Their Importance and Uses :"Boxes are commonly used as storage." (The Green Book, 2012). Boxes are made to contain things, so it would be expected that they would be strong and not easily broken. In some instances the box may become fragile or worn out after being used multiple times. The same applies to the love shown in hamlet. When people first fall in love the emotion is strong and the relationship can last for what feels like forever as shown through Gertrude and King Hamlet's love. This is due to how the "reward system is stimulated through very simple means," so the smallest of touches or "even just thinking about" them can cause an "increase [in] elevated mood" (Fisher 2013). After time passes the butterflies and intensity of emotions dies down and there needs to be more effort put into the relationship to keep it going. This can cause break ups because of how little effort is put into showing the other person that love still exists in the relationship. The longer a relationship lasts the more fragile the connection and love between them gets, so if one person is not giving as much effort as the other because they believe that the other person should do all of the work then the relationship may fail. Through time and use both boxes and love can become so fragile that they may not be able to be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
