One Framework to Rule Them All

AWS Lambdas are a dream come true for many developers in our quest to break down monolithic applications. But how can we manage a complex series of stateless functions? In this brief introduction to Step Functions, we will go over an exciting use case for managing a workflow using Lambdas. We will also take a look at the pros and cons of Step Functions vs other methods like trying to manually chain Lambdas or using SNS triggers. The audience is invited to learn and consider how to build event driven systems enabled by different AWS services.

Reactive applications & reactive programming result in flexible, concise, performant code and are a superior alternative to the old thread-based programming model. The reactive approach has gained popularity for a simple reason: we need alternative designs and architectures to meet today’s demands. However, it can be difficult to shift one’s mind to think in reactive terms, particularly when one realizes that we must be Reactive up and down the entire programming stack. In this talk we’ll explore what it means to be ‘Reactive’. We’ll examine some of the more interesting tools available to us, some of which come from the Groovy community. Specifically we’ll cover Ratpack, RxGroovy, React, and RabbitMq - along with examples and a sample implementation. We’ll demonstrate how effectively they can work together at each level of the stack - from the front end, to the back end, to handling http requests and message queue events - and how easy it can be to go Reactive all the way down.

Operating a massively scalable, constantly changing, distributed global service is a daunting task. We innovate at breakneck speed to attract new customers and stay ahead of the competition. Simultaneously improving service quality and enabling rapid, continuous change seems impossible on the surface. At Netflix, Operations Engineering is a centralized organization whose charter is to accomplish just that by applying high-leverage software engineering practices like continuous delivery. real-time analytics, and automation to solve operational problems. It's well established that many traditional IT Operations teams struggle to bridge the gap with software engineering. Operations Engineering is no exception. And while DevOps as a construct seeks to address this gap, it doesn't go far enough. It does not explain how to bridge the gap or even why it's important to do so. In this talk we’ll use Netflix Operations Engineering as a case study to address these questions. We'll explore common challenges faced by operational teams and strategies to overcome them.

ENT309 Scaling Up to Your First 10 Million Users

The “People You May Know” (PYMK) recommendation service helps LinkedIn’s members identify other members that they might want to connect to and is the major driver for growing LinkedIn's social network. The principal challenge in developing a service like PYMK is dealing with the sheer scale of computation needed to make precise recommendations with a high recall. PYMK service at LinkedIn has been operational for over a decade, during which it has evolved from an Oracle-backed system that took weeks to compute recommendations to a Hadoop backed system that took a few days to compute recommendations to its most modern embodiment where it can compute recommendations in near real time. This talk will present the evolution of PYMK to its current architecture. We will focus on various systems we built along the way, with an emphasis on systems we built for our most recent architecture, namely Gaia, our real-time graph computing capability, and Venice our online feature store with scoring capability, and how we integrate these individual systems to generate recommendations in a timely and agile manner, while still being cost-efficient. They focus on digital payments, helping businesses accept and process payments on various channels like the web, mobile, ATM, and POS. Recently, they’ve been in the news due to allegations of misconduct within the company, which has affected their reputation and value. Flutterwave is an essential player in the African fintech landscape, aiming to drive growth for banks and businesses through digital payment solutions. The Flutterwave scandal involves allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour towards female employees by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola. Reports have surfaced from both current and former employees about bullying, intimidation, and sexual harassment at work. The allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards female employees at Flutterwave, specifically involving the CEO Olugbenga Agboola, were brought to public attention in April 2022.This was when Clara Wanjiku Odero, an ex-employee and current CEO of Credrails, published a Medium post and a series of tweets on April 4, 2022, accusing Flutterwave and Agboola of bullying. This led to a broader investigation into the company’s practices and raised serious concerns about the fintech’s corporate governance. The scandal had significant repercussions, including a drop in the company’s stock price and a loss of trust among customers and partners. The trust that customers and investors had in Flutterwave was greatly damaged. People started to doubt the company’s integrity and whether their money and personal information were safe. Market Impact The scandal shook the entire fintech market. Flutterwave’s competitors saw this as an opportunity and started to attract customers who were leaving Flutterwave.
