WEDGE ISSUES
         Not just a controversial
          issue. Rather, an issue
        that is carefully framed
             to play on people‟s
                 fears and exploit
                   racism, sexism,
                    homophobia,
                transphobia, etc.
CONSOLIDATION OF POWER
       BY THE FAR RIGHT
The Right moved a MULTI ISSUE AGENDA that
          does violence to many…
         IMMIGRANTS
         PEOPLE OF COLOR
         LOW INCOME FOLKS
         LGBT PEOPLE
         WOMEN And divided these
                       communities against
                             each other…

  1. Intro (Maceo)May DaySpend some time talking about immigrant’s rights and the connections to trans rights before we dive into the 3 bills for Advocacy DayJust like trans communities have to advocate for ourselves, immigrant communities have to too. Many trans people ARE immigrants. We are going to compare the experiences of immigrants and trans folks, but we know these aren’t 2 separate communities.
  2. xtBoth are ways the government acknowledges who you areBoth are determined by birth and not by life experience, internal identity or choice. You have no control over your nationality or sex at birth, they are placed on you by society. But we can change them!
  3. During the journey, there are serious obstacles. We have to take risks to live our lives in a way that is true to ourselves. The risks range from ridicule to violence.Sacrafices
  4. MaceoWe have to go through a legal process to be recognized. You have to prove yourself to people who may not understand your identity. It’s expensive! It’s an issue of economic justice.
  5. xtMany immigrants don’t know their rights b/c of language barriers in accessing the courts.Barriers to public benefits
