The document summarizes some of the basic rules of hockey, including off-sides, icing, common penalties, how goals and assists are awarded, and what is required to win a game. Off-sides occurs when a player enters the attacking zone before the puck. Icing is called when the puck is shot from one's own side of center ice all the way down the ice, resulting in a face-off in the offending team's zone. Common penalties include slashing, tripping, and interference. A goal is scored when the entire puck crosses the goal line, and up to two assists can be awarded per goal. To win, a team must score more goals than the other team within regular time and overtime
3. Off-sides is when a player enters the attacking zone before the puck enters the zone. This action results in a whistle, and a face-off just outside the zone that was entered. There are 2 different rules for off-sides depending on what league you are playing in. Tag-up off-sides and automatic off-sides
5. Icing is when a team is on their own side of the center ice line, and shoots the puck all the way down the ice. When the puck crosses the goal-line, the whistle is blown and the face-off goes all the way down to the other end of the ice in the teams zone that shot the puck down.
10. When the puck goes into the net, a goal is awarded. The whole puck has to cross the goal-line or else it is not a goal. The goal is awarded to the player who shoots the puck into the net
12. Up to 2 assists can be awarded to players per goal. An assist is given to the person who passes the puck to the player who scores the goal. If a player passes it so another player, and that player passes it again and someone scores, both players that touch the puck are awarded an assist.
15. To win the game, a team must score more goals then the other team. If both teams have the same score, the game goes into one 5 minute overtime. First team to score in overtime wins. If nobody scores in overtime, the game ends in a tie, unless it is the National Hockey League (NHL) then the game will be decided in a shootout.
