• The machine era of the early
1900s.
• Early UX was meant to cut time
on the assembly line.
• Also helped shape the ease
and speed of use of the
telegram and telegraph.
• Later on the fields of
ergonomics for office
productivity.

The Disney Experience
• One of the early experience
designers: Walt Disney.
• Able to extend the experience
of a physical product by making
a service that evokes an
emotion.
• Forced Perspective in
Disneyland.

The Age of Computing
• The Xerox Parc was the
original PC to include a
graphical user interface (GUI)
and new interaction design:
keyboard and mouse.

• Norman Donald, Apple Inc. UX

UCD
• It’s a process in which the
needs, wants and limitations of
the users of a product are
given extensive attention at
each stage of the design
process.
• It answers questions about
their tasks and goals and uses
the findings to help in
development and design.

UCD
• In the design of a website/app UCD
answers the following:
1. Who are the users?
2. What are the users’ tasks and goals?
3. What are their experience levels?
4. What functions or information for the
users need?
5. How do users think the product
should work?
• The answers inspire product design and
drive product development.

Predispositions
• Axioms, claims, assumptions,
initial hypotheses.
• Put in the beginning of the
design explanation by making
sure all points of views are
represented.
• E.g) Everyone is entitled to an
education.

Research
• Designs need to be based on an
understanding of existing knowledge.
• 3 types:
1. Literature: Wikipedia, published
articles etc
2. Observations: shadow studies,
interviews etc
3. Collections: gathering of evidence
from popular culture, of things that
are inspirational or whimsical.

Proto-Personas
One’s best guess at who’s using your product and why.

Insights
• An interpretation of research
which may identify a problem
with an existing situations or a
version of something better.
• E.g) To make education
accessible to everyone it’s a
good idea to move a physical
campus into a community.

Concepts/Concept
Systems/Core
• Concept: An idea for a change in a human environment that follows from an insight.
• Concept systems: a number of concepts that work together in concert to create a coherent
improvement to a collective human condition.
• E.g) shopfront stores.

Prototypes
• A method of expressing a
concept/systems of concepts before
production.
• 3 types:
1. Exploration i.e. paper
prototypes
2. Appearance i.e. higher fidelity
paper prototypes of Photoshop
designs
3. Working i.e. MVPs that are
functional

Strategies
• An implementation plan for concept systems.
• 3 types:
1. Enterprise strategies: assess market viability.
2. Technical strategies: assess the technical
feasibility.
3. Social strategies: predict the social impact.
