Figurative Language In Stephen King s On Writing
1.
Many skilled authors use literary elements and techniques in their stories; for example, imagery,
dialogue, and figurative language. Not only do these authors use this devices, they use them
correctly. Stephen King, the author of On Writing and many other novels, uses these a lot
throughout his novels.
Figurative language and imagery plays a huge role in developing King s novel. The
Rag s office was a table located in the dirt floored, rock walled, spider infested confines of our
basement, somewhere north of the furnace and east of the root cellar, where Clayt and Ella s
endless cartons of preserves and canned vegetables were kept (pg. 42). The author uses great
imagery in this passage in which he is describing the area where his brother worked. This is
effective because it allows the reader to envision the workspace. Grammar is not just a pain in the
ass; it s the pole you grab to get your thoughts up on their feet and walking (pg. 121). This is a
metaphor, which is the comparison of two things by just stating that one thing is the other.
Another example of this would be, Plot is a far bigger tool, the writer s jackhammer (pg. 164).
In the first example, grammar is being compared to a pole that a writer grabs hold of. In the second
sentence, King is comparing plot to a jackhammer, and it is effective to get the point across and
explain the things, grammar and plot in these examples, in an interesting way. In the first sentence,
there is also an example of

The Environmental Effects Of Plastics
Plastic bags have been a popular commodity since the 1970 s due to their convenience and
sturdiness; however, plastic bags are a victim of their own success. These flyaway bags have
detrimental effects on the environment; they fill the trees and clog the storm drains. In response,
many states in the U.S. have imposed bag taxes in an effort to reduce their use. These taxes have
reduced the frivolous use of plastic bags and have heightened our awareness of their detrimental
effects, but concerns arise over the negative effects of the taxes on the economy and, surprisingly,
the environment as well.
Plastic bags have become the norm for Americans since the 1970 s due to their convenience.
Plastic bags are durable and reusable for other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This poses an economic threat for retailers. The economic advantage of plastic bags are too
significant for retailers to ignore. While advocates of these taxes argue that it will reduce the use of
plastic bags, many argue that these taxes fail to protect the environment and economy of the U.S.
Over a 100 cities across the U.S. have imposed taxes on plastic bags after watching countries in
Europe have favorable results. Tony Lowes, director of the Friends of the Irish Environment,
claims that Ireland s 15 cent tax on plastic bags has resulted in a 95 percent reduction in their use
(qtd. in Roach 3). Similarly, cities in the U.S. imposed taxes in an effort to achieve effective
results. A bag tax in Washington D.C. has resulted in a 50 percent decrease in single bag usage
(Bayly 3). On the other side of the country, Los Angeles went from using 2.2 million bags a year
to using 125,000 a year after the tax on bags went into effect (Bayly 3); nonetheless, advocates of
plastic bags have brought to light the harsh reality of taxes. Bag taxes pose an economic threat
for both retailers and consumers. Areas that have imposed taxes experienced a decrease in sales
while areas not subject to taxes experienced an increase in sales. According to a survey conducted
by the National Center for Policy Analysis, these taxes force many stores to reduce their
employment by more than 10% (qtd. in Gleason 4). Plastic bag taxes make grocery shopping
unaffordable for families below the

The Factors Of Social Psychology
This movie is chosen for a number of reasons. One because of it s reputation at being the greatest
of all time classics. Secondly, it shows examples of behavioral, physiological, and mental aspects
of psychology that anyone can judge it and come to their own conclusion. It s an awesome movie
to find theories to analyze, not to mention having the greatest ongoing values along with the film.
Most of the big theories that I will use deal with of social interaction, which involves with the
factors of social psychology.
Starting off I would like to point one of the characters from the movie. The character is by Keanu
Reeves, who plays the role as Mr. Thomas Anderson, a computer programmer, but he s also living
a life as a computer hacker under the alias Neo . The social principle that applies to Neo s character
of being a very informational influence. To give a brief summary, Neo is awoken from a
simulation of what life is, to the cruel reality which is the exact opposite of everything he s known.
Neo experiences all the characteristics of being in an unusual environment and culture, which
include but not limited to denial, acceptance, etc. The reason why influences plays a part is because
Neo is motivated by the belief that individuals who brought him to reality are correct. This is, what
s known as informational influence.
There are ten different events.characters, and ideas in the movie that definitely point out to several
theories of psychology. The first is an

Who Is Helena In A Midsummer s Night Dream
In the play A midsummers night dream by William Shakespeare the character Helena who is in
love with Demetrius wants to marry him however she cannot due to the fact that he is not in love
with her and does not want to marry her. Also, Helena is envious of her best friend Hermia
because both of the main male protagonists are in lovewith Hermia. Throughout the play A
midsummers night dream the character Helena is the most important as she is deceiving, caring
and jealous.
In A midsummer s night dream the character Helena is deceiving as she wanted Demetrius s love
she went to very extreme lengths to get it. In the play, an example of this is when she told
Lysander and Hermia s plan to Demetrius. I will go tell him of fair Hermia s

Neil Peart Traveling Music Analysis
Traveling Music: Playing Back the Soundtrack to My Life and Times, by Neil Peart, reveals the
backstage secrets of himself, in the life of a musician. Peart describes his 50 year lead up to fame
with music as his primary inspiration. With the desire to travel, Peart leaves his Canadian home
and becomes a drummer, writing lyrics and discovering new sites on the road. His story tells of the
hardships a musician goes through in order to succeed in the entertainment industry, as well as find
internal success in his own life. Throughout Traveling Music, Peart demonstrates that achievements
come with time, and that when staying true to his values, success will occur.
To show that achievements take time to triumph, Peart describes how stories can ... Show more

Peart describes home as a feeling about yourself, not the place around you, and you can take it
with you (339). In this metaphor, home is considered a feeling, rather than a physical place.
When working hard with his band, the author has finally made it as far as touring with his band in
several countries, making music his home. Peart also states in a revelating mood that he finally
knows what happiness is. In the passage, Peart says, ... just at that moment, to be working in that
inspiring setting (370). With the phrase just at that moment , the author concludes that he had an
epiphany, finally understanding the essence of happiness. Saying that happiness was working in
an inspiring setting shows the author learned a lot from making music and arranging his band.
Back in the first chapter of Traveling Music, Peart used the phrase Now what? in several
paragraphs when struggling to find more work to do in a short amount of time (3). In the last
chapter of the memoir, Peart concludes that he found the answer to that now what question and is
pleased by the results (375). A flashback to an earlier chapter shows that the author, after all these
years, has finally become at one with himself, and accomplished his life goals with no more

Two Organelles Research Paper
The largest organelle, the nucleus is a membrane bound organelle that contains the vast majority of
the cell s DNA. The nucleus is considered the defining feature of a eukaryotic cell because its
presence separates eukaryotes from the more ancient prokaryotic cell. The nucleus is often referred
to as the control center of the cellbecause the DNAthat it contains directs all aspects of cellular
function (18). While most cells only have one nucleus, some cells (red blood cells) lack a nucleus
and are therefore unable to divide and produce daughter cells. In humans, some types of skeletal
muscle cells have multiple nuclei during their development; however multinucleated cells can also
be associated with inflammation (19) and tumor development (20).
The nucleus is bound by the nuclear envelope, a two membrane structure that forms an
impermeable barrier around the DNA and other nuclear components, separating them from the
cytoplasm. The inner nuclear membrane faces the chromosomes and is a phospholipid bilayer that
contains many different proteins. The outer membrane, also a phospholipid bilayer, faces the
cytoplasm and in many cells it is continuous with the rough ER (21). ... Show more content on

Each pore complex is composed of approximately 1000 proteins called nucleoporins (18). Each
pore is large enough to allow passage of ribosomal subunits, large protein RNA complexes, and
other materials that are necessary for gene expression and chromosomal maintenance. Larger
molecules must be actively transported through the pore while small molecules and ions move
freely between the nucleus and the cytosol. Therefore in addition to providing a protected
compartment for the DNA, the nuclear envelope also regulates gene expression by controlling the
movement of proteins, RNA and other regulatory molecules into or out of the nucleus

Literary Analysis Of John O Connor sFirst Confession
Will there ever be an object or idea that can reverse a mistake ? As humans have evolved, there
have been different notions created on the consequences of doing certain activities or actions.
While the preceding is important to take into mind, does it always have to be so serious? Any
individual who grows up does either childish actions or just simple mistakes. O Connor shows how
the formality of this can be taken to an extreme point with the story of Jackie. In First Confessionhe
creates a humorous tone with the utilization of figurative language and characterization. To begin
with, First Confession holds a strong message, but it holds it with a touch of humor. With this story
being told from a reflective point of view, it really shows the comical sides of the story. Most of
us have those stories that as we reflect on them now, can be very funny; the same was for Jackie.
Jackie wrote about his first confession, which was probably from a few years back and now he
highlights the funny parts of them. For example, the rivalry between Nora, his sister, and him. A
rivalry which then seemed very serious for Jackie, was not that serious in reality. As well, his
grandmother s arrival was so bad for him then that he even plotted her murder. The humorous side
of this story is reflected mainly in his conversation with the priest. The priest tells him, Between
ourselves, there s a lot of people I d like to do the same to, but I d never have the nerve. By

Causes And Treatment Of Sepsis
REVIEW OF LITRATURE
The term sepsis has been around since prehistoric times. Hippocrates presented the word sepsis
2400 years ago to represent a condition where an overwhelming infection leads to tissue breakdown
with rotting, foul odour, and disease. The ancient Roman scholar and writer (116 BC 27 BC),
Marcus Terentius Varro mentioned that small creatures, invisible to the eye, fill the atmosphere,
and breathed through the nose cause dangerous diseases.
In the early 1990s at a conference convened by the American College of Chest Physicians and the
Society of Critical Care Medicine modern definitions of sepsis were termed in detail. At that time,
sepsis was described as a systemic response to a physiologic insult including infections and other
etiologies that lead to the development of further organ injury, ultimately culminating in multiple
organ dysfunction syndromes.
The word bacteraemia is used when bacteria are isolated from the blood whether clinical
symptoms are present or not while the words sepsis or septicaemia is used for the isolation of
bacteria in blood in combination with clinical symptoms and signs of infections.
Neonatal sepsis, also named Sepsis neonatorum , represents to a group of physical and laboratory
findings that occur in response to invasive infection within the first 30 days (neonatal) of life.
Criteria for neonatal sepsis should include documentation of infection in a newborn infant (0
28days) with a serious systemic illness in

she thought that she had a mosquito bite; however, the nodule has not improved over the past 3
weeks. The nodule has started to grow larger, itches and bleeds when scratched. The patient denies
having any other significant past medical history. Examination shows a 0.75 cm (7.5 mm) lesion on
the back of her neck, seen in the image. Which of the following is most appropriate in the
management of this patient? A.Excisional biopsy B.Interferon alpha C.Observation D.Positron

Misguided Rationale
The truth is not always present in the news. Reporters make mistakes, but when that wrong
information gets to spread the problem begins. The media is in a race on putting out information.
The danger is that there is no checking to make sure the information is true. Media is in a cycle of
the news getting a hold of an alternative fact, the media spreading it, a powerful sourcerestating the
information, and the general audience seeing that story as fact. That information can then be turned
into political policies and ideologies. When the person that are spreading the wrong facts gets
challenged with the truth, they tend to a backlash towards the critic. They refuse to admit to their
mistake deepening the misguided rationale behind their fact.... Show more content on

Gladstone spent the reading illustrating how false news gets spread. Facts can be giving because
they are catchy. This does not make them accurate. When a powerful source gets the fake news,
that is when there is a problem. Technology increases the likelihood of alternative facts being
caught. There is a problem when the person who spoke the information refuses to admit their
mistake. Gladstone uses the example of Lou Dobbs to show this point ( Gladstone 54). He stated
that if we reported it, it s a fact when confronted with the inaccurate numbers he used in his report.
Trump does a similar argument when confronted with his wrong information. Bill O Rielly pointed
out that Trump was wrong when he stated that thousands of Muslims were seen celebrating after 9
/11. Trump refused to admit his mistake, but instead used a Breitbart article that agreed with him
as his defense (Oliver). This shows that people are after the news the want to hear. Breitbart is not
thought of as a reliable source, but they stated Trump was correct so he used them as fact. Trump
and Dobbs both did not want to admit to their mistakes. They both saw what they said as true, even
when others showed them the

Gender Inequality In Gender And The Media
1.0 Introduction
Gender inequality is the idea or situation that men and women are not equal, and is a problem in
countries around the world. I will be focusing my research on this type of inequality in Canada. It
is an issue for both men and women that they are exposed to at birth, is fed by the media as a
teen, and continues in their everyday life as an adult. My approach to this issue is examining three
topics that are related to my assignment: childhood, everyday life, and the media. Acts of gender
inequality can be found within these broad points that negatively or positively affect males and
females. For childhood, there will be toys, clothing, and child advertising. In everyday life, I will
cover the workplace, travel, and costs. Media will include celebrities, television/movies, and social
media. My thesis statement is: gender inequality is evident in many stages of human development
through childhood, teenage years, and adulthood. Gender inequality is a real thing and it is proven
in childhood, as a teenager, and adult.

Elizabeth Bennet As An Idealist In Jane Austen s Pride And...
An idealist is someone who follows and is influenced by ideals and standards as opposed to
considering the practicalities of a situation. In other words, an idealist does not carefully think every
situation through, but rather responds to the norm instead. In Jane Austen s novel, Pride and
Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet, the novel s protagonist, is an intelligent and sharp individual, who is
profoundly interested in romantic relationships and getting married, as her mother wants her to do.
Elizabeth, willing to marry anyone for the sake of romance, becomes easily distracted and, in turn,
does not consider every aspect of the situations she entangles herself in before fastening
conclusions. Because she so easily succumbs to the powers of romance and often leaves her better
judgement at home, Elizabeth Bennet can be considered an idealist. At the dawn of the tale,
Elizabeth, searching fiercely for romance, comes across a handsome militia officer named George
Wickham. Elizabeth is instantly attracted to him; his pleasant appearance and charming personality
are enough to draw her in. As she listens to Wickham speak, especially negatively about Fitzwilliam
Darcy, an aristocrat, she does not question or slightly doubt a word that he is saying. She is so
swayed by his good looks and charming manner that she does not think for a second that he
could be a malicious man; she is falling under his spell ignorantly. Elizabeth s strong desire for
romance shuts down her judgement and causes her to fall in love with Wickham, without
thought. At this point, she thinks it is best to follow the standards and be an idealist, because
she has always been told to get married by her mother, Mrs. Bennet. Mrs. Bennet can take some
blame for Elizabeth s idealism, or strong desire for romance. She is constantly reminding her five
daughters that they must find a man in particular, a wealth man as soon as possible so they can
marry. Mrs. Bennet s desperation for her daughters wedlock is demonstrated when she says, If I
can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield, and all the others equally well
married, I shall have nothing to wish for (Austen 17). Perhaps this was Elizabeth s primary
influence in

My Trip To Mandalay Essay
Newsflash: Mandalay doesn t suck 7 things to do
Planning my trip to Myanmar, I told a couple of people about my itinerary:
Starting from Yangon, I wanted to work my way up north over Inle Lake and Bagan to Mandalay.
The common response to that was: Cool but don t spend any time in Mandalay. I heard it s a

So I was obviously on a mission to find the beauty of Mandalay, and guess what: I did.
The only real plans I made before were visiting the U Bein Bridge and Mandalay Hill.

Persuasive Techniques Used in Poetry Essay
Persuasive Techniques Used in Poetry
Compare the persuasive techniques used in the poems. Say which poems you feel are the most
effective and Why?
Persuading poets have been writing poems on love, lust and nature since the beginning of time. The
7 poems that are analysed here range from the 16th 19th centuries.
These poems are all written by men arguing and persuading the effects of love.
In To virgins , it appears that Robert Herrick uses small amounts of natural imagery to persuade
virgins and to stress the fast passing of time. He begins with a time threatening statement urging the
virgins to
gather ye rosebuds while ye may he then adds
This same flower that smiled today tomorrow will be dying .

He ends the fourth stanza with a negative mood by using you may forever tarry .
This phrase means that for the rest of your life you will suffer with loneliness if you don t follow
his commands.
Herrick s poem is in an ordered structure and has an alternate rhyming rhythm that makes the poem
more commanding. The lack of imagery in this poem gives it a more uneasy and blunt mood. The
pace of the rhythm in this poem is quick which links in with the expressing of fast time and adds to
the effect of a threatening poem.
This poem suggests to me that maybe he is desperate so he uses the persuasion accordingly.
This poem compares well to Of Beauty by Richard Fanshawe because both of the poems are in an
ordering mood and have a positive and negative part of the stanza s.
It also compares well to To his coy mistress by Andrew Marvell. Both of the poems are arguing
that time is running out so let me love you now while we have the time. They both use a lot of
time statements such as long loves day , nearer he s to setting and ten years before . The second
poem, Of Beauty by Richard Fanshawe, is a short, one stanza poem. It uses personification during
the middle of the stanza.
Earth her winter coat may cast, and renew her beauty past .
These uses of personification are to state that winter is a person and her beauty runs out so and so
will yours.
Earth her winter coat may cast .
The imagery that is used in Of Beauty is

The Relationship Between Grey Levels And Hounsfield Units...
Studies in the mentioned disciplines can be broadly divided into two levels namely physical and
computational level. Due to the cost of physical development, the tendency for the computational
aspects has been raised. Technical parameters of scanners include Cycle time, spatial resolution, low
contrast resolution, uniformity, linearity, slice thickness, computed tomography dose index
(CTDI), and pitch cite{duan2017computed}. Mah et al. cite{mah2010deriving} investigate the
relationship between grey levels and Hounsfield units (HU) in cone beam CT (CBCT) scanners. To

The projection sub systems of CT scanners has experienced changes in 3 aspects including
parallel, fan, and cone beam systems cite{sidky2008image} cite{vo2014reliable}. Sidky and
Pan cite{sidky2008image} proposed a theoretical framework to show how accurate circular cone
beam CT image reconstruction can be done from reduced data sampling. In data acquisition
phase, they assumed that the estimated projection data is within a specified tolerance of the
available data and the values of voxels are non negative. To observe these constraints, a projection
onto convex sets was considered, and the total variation (TV) gets minimized by steepest descent
with an adaptive step size. They argued that the TV algorithm can resolve low contrast structures
in the presence of high contrast objects even when the projection data sets are limited in angular
range or view number, and when the low contrast object is not at the mid plane of the circular x
ray trajectory. Qi and Chen cite{zhihua2008direct} considered image reconstruction in fan beam
based CT in which the derived formula applies to the real domain. First, inverse Fourier transform
was applied to use the multiplication instead of convolution in Fourier space. Afterward, the range
of calculation was extended to cover redundancy. This method is subject to observing full circle
scan in data acquisition mode.

All too often, people use products without really paying attention to the ingredients. If a person
does some research, he or she would be absolutely amazed at what they put on or in their bodies
on a daily basis. If a person researches the side effects of the chemicals in the products they use,
they would realize why there is a movement out there to go to more natural products. Some of the
most chemical laden products out there are hair products, such as shampoos and conditioners. There
are chemicals in these products that, over time, can do significant damage to hair. Luckily, there are
hair products out there that use natural ingredients that do a much better job of keeping hair healthy
and they often don t have any of the nasty side effects of the chemicals.
Some of the most common ingredients in natural hair products are those such as safflower oil, ...

Old Roger Chillingworth
OLD Roger Chillingworth, throughout life, had been calm in temperament, kindly, though not of
warm affections, but ever, and in all his relations with the world, a pure and upright man. He had
begun an investigation, as he imagined, with the severe and equal integrity of a judge, desirous
only of truth, even as if the question involved no more than the air drawn lines and figures of a
geometrical problem, instead of humanpassions, and wrongs inflicted on himself. But, as he
proceeded, a terrible fascination, a kind of fierce, though still calm, necessity seized the old man
within its gripe, and never set him free again, until he had done all its bidding. He now dug into
the poor clergyman s heart, like a miner searching for gold; or, rather,... Show more content on

Many, many a poor soul hath given its confidence to me, not only on the death bed, but while

witnessed in those sinful brethren! even as in one who at last draws free air, after long stifling
with his own polluted breath. How can it be otherwise? Why should a wretched man, guilty, we
will say, of murder, prefer to keep the dead corpse buried in his own heart, rather than fling it
forth at once, and let the universe take care of it! 13 Yet some men bury their secrets thus,
observed the calm physician.14 True; there are such men, answered Mr. Dimmesdale. But, not
to suggest more obvious reasons, it may be that they are kept silent by the very constitution of
their nature. Or, can we not suppose it? guilty as they may be, retaining, nevertheless, a zeal for
God s glory and man s welfare, they shrink from displaying themselves black and filthy in the
view of men; because, thenceforward, no good can be achieved by them; no evil of the past be

7 Wastes
Elimination of muda
Muda is a traditional general Japanese term for activity that is wasteful and doesn t add value or
is unproductive or not useful in practice or others. It is also a key concept in the Toyota
Production System (TPS) and is one of the three types of waste (Muda, Mura, Muri) that it
identifies. Mura signifies wastes due to unevenness and muri signifies wastes due to overburden.
Waste as defined by Toyota s president, Fujio Cho, is anything other than the minimum amount of
equipment, materials, parts and workers which are absolutely essential to production . The seven
types of wastes identified are
1.Overproduction Waste due to producing before customer requires or more than needed which
often hides production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Over refining adds no value to the customer. Good designs should reduce analyzing, testing,
inspecting and validating. Designs should be kept as simple as possible.
Excess inventory leads to additional costs. Designs should favor just in time production. There
should be no stockpiling of raw materials and parts.
Designs have bearing on the number of defects in production. If designs can be assembled
incorrectly, chances of defects increase. Missing, unclear or incorrect designs lead to defects. High
precision designs lead to lower yields and higher defects. Design should also meet the customer
requirements. Review
People often start using lean production tools without understanding their impacts on the waste
reduction. Value stream mapping can be used to recognize the wastes in the system. Value stream
is a network of steps from beginning to end that provides the result for the customer. Some
activities add value while others do not. All non value adding activities are wastes. Tools like value
stream mapping and 5S need to be linked with waste reduction.
There is a growing trend to increase the number of wastes. The original muda concept had 7 wastes
overproduction, waiting time, transportation, inventory, over processing, motion, product defect
wastes. Because of its inherent simplicity people feed the need to improve it and add various other
wastes like complexity and unused people skills.

Managed Health Care Analyzed Essay
The health care industry in the United States is very diverse and dynamic. The continued growth
of managed health care is influenced by the economy, the need, and the regulatory regulations set
forth on the industry. If one of these forces changes, it can affect the entire group; this causes the
managed health care industry to be at the mercy of its roots and the industry s need for it. What
started out as a simple idea has turned into a complex and ever growing industry that is necessary
for the health care industry to stay afloat in the world today. The health care system is ever
changing and it appears that change is the only constant in the managed careorganizations. Despite

If the health care market place continues to consolidate, the defined line of managed health care
continues to be blurred. As the health care market demands change, so does the managed health
care plans. These ever changing plans are crucial for the survival of managed health care plans
and companies (Kongstvedt, 2001). Change is inevitable when it is a faltering system; such as
health care and insurance, which means in the health care industry there is nothing constant in the
contemporary managed care systems. When speaking of managed health care, some find it to be
an institution set forth as a response to the consistently rising health care costs, that some viewed
as detrimental to the United States economy as a whole. Others viewed managed care as a
documented response to health care quality problems that have long been ignored. That the
problems managed health care would specifically help rectify patterns of over and underuse,
misuse, and any geographic variation in the medical services provided to citizens (Kongstvedt,
2001). Both of these ideals had a hand in the wide spread adoption of managed health care in the
United States, they do not define the foundational and personal changes that needed to occur in
order to accommodate such a large change. However, following the introduction of the health
maintenance organizations or HMO s there has been an over flow of managed care programs and
products being created in the United States.

Lottery believed that the fool who obey the ignorant tradition will kill themselves, through are
afraid of death. The author who wrote Popular Mechanics believed that the parents which seams

Responses Poem
Tribute is a poem consisting of eighteen lines in three sixtains, closely resembling the form of John
Berryman s Dream Song poems. The title of Jennings poem Tribute sets up the readers
preconceptions of a poem as a celebration, and an honouring towards a person with our admiration.
Instead these ideas set in precognition are shattered when the reader begins reading the opening
lines., The reader recognises the subject to Jennings tribute being to the tall poem . On the one
hand, this image could be thought of to be a designed creation of exaggeration in Jennings own
intimidation on the approach of writing. On the other hand, the poem is unremitting in this
approach, attempting to channel the underlying and unseen issues that remain hidden in the
shadows of our minds. Jennings discussion of her own mental illness and this tall poem ... Show

imagery that Jennings is consistently referring to within the syntax of the poem. Something that

Petric Competition Experiment
Introduction Almost all living things deal with competition, including plants. In order to understand
competition, it is first necessary to understand niche. A niche is a species ecological role in a
community (Brooker et al. 2016). Competition occurs when there is an overlap of the niches this
causes the plants to compete for the limited amount of resources. Competition is an interaction
where both of the parties involved are negatively impacted. There are four main types of
competition. Intraspecific competition occurs between individuals within the same species. Another
type is interspecific competition, which occurs between individuals of separate species. The other
two types of competition depends on how the members are competing. One... Show more content on

Our results support this hypothesis since when garlic was present in the petri dish there was no
growth, compared to the control where there was growth. This was because of the chemical that
garlic releases, allicin (Djurdjevic 2004). For the second experiment, we hypothesized that the
garlic bulb would have the greatest effect on lettuce seed growth. Our results supported this
hypothesis since there was no growth in the lettuce seeds when the bulb was present. This
occurred because the bulb releases allicin which prevents the uptake of organic substances in the
seeds (Djurdjevic 2004). Therefore, we reject the null hypothesis. The data suggests that our
alternative hypotheses were correct. During our experiment, there were a few possible sources
of error. One is the presence of mold growth in some of the petri dishes. This could have skewed
some of the data. Another possible source of error is that since different students measured each
seedling sprouts, they could have measured differently from the next person. This would cause
some of the measurements to be either too low or too high. The third possible source of error is
that the parafilm did not completely seal the petri dishes. This would have caused the petri dish to
dry out and would inhibit growth for the lettuce

Adorno And Allum Similarities And Differences
Outline the similarities and differences between the research studies of Adorno et al. (1950) and
Allum (2011) on personality types
Allum s research revealed correlations to Adorno s personality scales, rationalizing three
hypothesized studies. Allum (2011), cited in McAvoy (2017), (pp. 33 38), studies included
pseudoscience ideologies such as Astrology to foretell events in individual s life, as well lack
scientific literacy from participants of how Astrology and Astronomy were etymologically
classified. Allum similarly supported Adorno s notion that people with authoritarian personalities
were more likely to believe in superstition and pseudo sciences such as astrology, however, Allum
contrasting Adorno et al. s authoritarian personality type analysis, questioned the inclination of this
study s sample, assuming a more generalized view among populations, Allum (2011), (p. 362).
Adorno leaned heavily upon Freud, using a systematic formula to directly observe measurable
aspects of personality, exploring latent fascist predisposition to prejudice theorizing the structure of
personality research, Adorno (1950), (p. 53). To further interpret Freudian similarities in both

company also has some minor international operations in Canada and the UK, primarily in the
credit card business. The company breaks down its business as follows. Credit cards are the major
source of income, accounting for $10.4 billion in revenue, or 64% of the total revenue for the
company. Consumer banking accounts for 31% of the revenue, commercial banking a further 10%
of the revenue, and the company has negative revenue on other businesses. The credit cardbusiness
is the most profitable, generating $2.277 billion in profit, or 70% of the company s total net
income. Consumer banking accounted for 25% of total net income, while commercial banking
accounted for 16% of total net income.
The company has recently made moves to build its retail banking business and its credit card
business. In 2012, Capital One completed the purchase of ING Direct USA, a deal that added
$80 billion in deposits to the company s balance sheet. It then added HSBC s US credit card
business. This move added $28 billion worth of credit card assets to the company s portfolio.
These acquisitions were substantial in nature $9 billion for ING and $31.3 billion for HSBC (No

businesses. Such expansion of its two largest businesses indicates that Capital One is more

Benefit Of The International Space Station
Benefits of the International Space Station to Earth Space is a place where no ground can be
felt, sound can t be heard, and every direction is endless darkness. There are people who spend
their lives studying space and how it differs from Earth. With the help of experts from 15 nations,
The International Space Station (ISS) has been built. The space station travels in our orbit at

The space station was not always there. It took about thirteen years to complete, and it all started in

of a space station and they had no idea what it could be used for. In November of 1998, Russia

The Contemporary Water Crisis Of Mumbai
This essay will explore the contemporary water crisis in Mumbai, India; a rapidly growing
megacity that for decades has struggled to provide adequate access to water for their 20 million
residents, and in particular the more than 10 million people living in unsanctioned self erected slum
communities that surround the cityproper. Beyond the technical and structural barriers lie
ideological and cultural impediments that I will argue are borne in part from an idealized quest
for modernity informed by free market capitalism and neoliberal ideology. I will argue that this
has created deep cultural and societal rifts that have been exploited by vested economic interests
through discursive and political campaigns that seek to delegitimize the right of Mumbai s
citizens to water, and by extension life. The spectre of climate change provides a backdrop for an
existential struggle that has been unfolding for decades and appears likely to continue. This essay
will examine the circumstances and failures that preceded the 2014 landmark ruling handed down
by the High Court of Mumbai which affirmed the inalienable right to water, regardless of legal
status of one s domicile, including attempts to privatize water services in various regions of the city.

John Stuart Mill Tyranny Of Majority
1.Introduction There are different and various groups who have their own interest and agenda.
One of the values that a democratic system tries to achieve is equal representation to all of the
groups that it embraces. However, people often fear whether a particular group will project more
influence than others. Due to the nature of democratic system where the decision is made
according to the majority rule, many critics argue the possibility of tyranny by majority where
the group with the most number of members rules in favor of its preference over the interests of
other groups who are considered to be minority with less members. Furthermore, people fear
whether such majority favored interest will be forced up on minority groups who do not agree
with such view of the majority. Such takeover of majority in politics is what we call tyranny of
majority However, others believe that minority group can also become a tyrant in a society,

protection when the individual in concern poses a threat to others. Other than such circumstance,
he strongly believed in the minimum level of enforcement of majority opinion on the minority,

G.)How does the elevation of Cari s respiratory rate alter her minute ventilation?
The higher her respiratory rate the more liters of oxygen needed to supply for the loss in her lungs.
To get the minute ventilation you take the breaths per min times 500mL/breath and that gets your
liters of oxygen per min.
H.)How do the the clinical findings relate to the internal respirations in Cari s body?
Cari s po2 is 54 mm Hg so therefore her lungs were working as if she was doing intense exercise

I.)Which of the symptoms Cari s has described are due to the lack of oxygen and reduced oxygen

Cari s states, I feel like I m panting like a dog, and my chest hurts Her shortness of breath, fatigue
and headache are all results of the lack of oxygen exchange to her tissues. The pH of her blood was
rising due to the hyperventilation also.
J.)As Cari s Pco2 rose, how was the oxygen carrying capacity of hemoglobin affected?

reality is grossly over simplified. When looking at real TV even though these programs are shot,
selected, and edited by somebody in the long run they are still real. What happens when the
depiction of the real worldis shown through a game show? Is it still real? In trying to explain how

But this show now adds sex and controversy as a major component of what the producers would
like to think is a health relationship. This show is a program that not only fosters sex on the first date
but also sex outside of marriage. As you will see later on this show has a selective audience type
that they want to gain and religious folks are not part of that audience. So if you like this show you
might not want to tell your church about it.
The way the show works is the contestants go and pick up their prospective blind date and are
told to plan out a day of fun. A typical date usually goes like this: first the individual meets the
other at some agreed upon location. They introduce themselves and then head out. They then
proceed to usually some type of pre dinner activity (ex. shopping, walk, or rock climbing). Then
there is dinner of some sort were they do some more talking and use this as a window for
opportunity to see what may happen later on that night. After dinner there is some type of after
dinner event (ex. movie, dancing, moon light walk, etc.). From there they head to some one s
place of residence and usually engage in some R rated activities. When that is over part two begins.
They all come together on the air were they talk about what happened on the two dates. This is
when things begin to get interesting!!! When the participants get together it all starts out well. They

Cimabue Painting The Madonna Enthroned
Through society had used art as a consideration for their religious beliefs and educated morals the
panting Madonna Enthroned has a traditional Christian subject, representing the Virgin Mary and
the Christ Child seated on her lap. This large painting is an extremely important landmark in art

ABSTRACT:
Cigarette smoking in pregnancy is a universal problem that compels us to continuously explore
different strategies aimed at increasing high quit rates in this population group. Maternal smoking
during pregnancy has been linked to increased risk of obstetric and foetal adverse outcomes.
Barriers to quitting are multi factorial and the approach needs to be versatile and patient specific,
taking into consideration the dynamics of ethnicity, psychosocial and socioeconomic status.
The aim of this paper is to highlight the different strategies that have been evaluated looking at
ways of enabling pregnant women to quit smoking. Furthermore, smoking cessation in special
population groups and global initiatives on smoking regulations are discussed. A database search of
Ovid Medline, Pubmed, Embase and The Cochrane Library was undertaken to identify

Compare And Contrast Beowulf And Achilles
Beowulf and Achilles Epic warriors have significant inspiration in British literature. An epic is an
enlightening story to portray a historical or fictional figure who centralizes on concepts such as
braveness, glory and physical strength. Despite of extraordinary abilities, epic heroes do not have
longevity because they prefer a short life with remarked glory rather than dying in obscurity.
Achillesis known as one of the great warriors of Greek mythology, and a heroic character
participated in the Trojan War. Both Beowulfand Achilles are remarkable figures in the British
literature which portrays them as examples of heroic archetype. It goes without to say that
Beowulf and Achilles are depicted as epic warriors; however, they do perform different
motivation of their parents desire for glory, so Beowulf fights for his King s peace and
communities while Achilles fights for revenge.First of all, Beowulf and Achilles are excellent
symbols of the epic warriors who chase for the victory. They exemplify for epic warrior traits
such as courage and physical strength. In the Beowulf book, the author describes Beowulf such
a brave hero, even in an old age, I hereby renounce sword and the shelter of the broad shield, the
heavy war board: hand to hand is how it will be, a life and death fight with the fiend, says
Beowulf (line 433 440.) To analyze this point, Beowulf makes his battle with Grendel as a simple
task. According to the book, Beowulf fights with Grendel barehanded

Us Army Psychological Operations Research Paper
Abstract
Over 80 years ago a young Army officer changed the face of battle employing Psychological
Warfare that left lasting effects regarding the method of modern day employment of Military
Information Support Operations (MISO) by Psychological Operations (PSYOP) forces. Major
General (MG) Robert Alexis McClure was a psychological warfare specialist and is considered
the founder of U.S. Army Psychological Operations (source). Soldiers assigned to conventional
forces certainly have never heard of him, and even most Special Operations Forces (SOF) soldiers
have only a small understanding of the beginnings of special warfare with its roots in
Psychological Operations. Since 1989, there has been a very select few that embraced the

Warfare for the U.S. Army and the legacy he left for those to follow.
The Making of the Master
A native of Mattoon, Illinois, McClure joined the Army in 1915 and earned his commission as an
Army officer in 1917, serving seventeen years as a Captain in a variety of assignments throughout
the U.S., the Philippines, China and England. While serving as the military attachГ© to the
American Embassy in London, General Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed McClure as chief of
intelligence for the European theater of operations in 1942 (Paddock, n.d.).
As the Allies prepared to invade North Africa, McClure was charged with control of the newly
formed Information and Censorship Section for the Allied Forces headquarters (Paddock, n.d.).
Endearingly referred to as the INC, the Information and Censorship Section was a conglomeration
of civilian and military personnel from various Allied organizations to conduct psychological
warfare, civil affairs and public relations using various forms of dissemination means such as radio,
leaflet, signals, front line, occupation, domestic propaganda censorship that enhanced the Allied

Essay On Paul Revere s Ride
Paul RevereВґs Ride The poem of Paul Revere gives false information about Paul Revere and his
ride. They got a lot of information wrong like they did not mention the other two guys. Which
there were two other guys that had to do with it also. The poem mentioned that there were
lanterns that show the path of the troops. But the lanterns did not represent the path of the troops
it actually represented that paul revere was on his way to warn the people about the british
troops. The poem does not tell how the ride ends. But the truth tells how it ends and what Paul
Revere stood for. Paul Revere stood for the end of slaves and he was a big part of the civil war
because he was doing something dangerous because he wanted to end slavery.Paul Revere and
his ride was a propaganda about slaves. The poem gives false information about the lanterns and
what they were used for in the poem. The article tells the correct reason for the purpose of the
lanterns and the real reason was for to let the people know if Paul Revere was captured by the
british troops. The poem that told the false information about the purpose of the lanterns. The
purpose of the lanterns in the poem is to tell Paul Revere what route the british troops were taking.

William Shakespeare s Hamlet And The Duchess Of...
Shakespeare and Webster represent the female characters in Hamlet and The duchess of Malfi by
using general themes such as the patriarchy and the social control, the female identity and its
independence, this institution of marriage, the expressions of sexuality and finally women shown
to be either conformist or transgressive. Men were firmly in control in the Elizabethan and
Jacobean era, and the expectations for women were to stay home, cook, clean and raise a family.
Women s status and roles were subject to the Tyranny of patriarchy, they were given strict
disciplinary rules to follow whether by law or unspoken norms to prevent from rebellion. Women s
rights were restricted, legally, socially and economically, unlike today were women are more
powerful and independent. Today women and men are seen to be equal and women can do pretty
much everything a man can do (voting, working, becoming president) although there are many
people still today who disagree with women having these rights.
There are aspects of renaissance patriarchy demonstrated in both plays, which is exercised as a
form of social control using dominant gender ideologies. Hamlets in his first soliloquy talks about
his mother and how quick she was to remarry after only 1 month of his father s death, he then says
Frailty, thy name is woman not only including his mother but the whole women population also
indicating that he has superior intellect and moral understanding. He dedicates the word frailty to a

Central High School Integration Case Study
While researching the integration of Central High School, I discovered many events that led to the
desegregation of public areas. These events all occurred prior to 1957 and have somehow
contributed to the integration of schools in the United States, including Central High. While
searching through the internet I found several websites that contained timelines and archives of
that era. This content shed light on the effects of segregation and the causes of integration. One
thing that the sources did not cover is if similar situations are occurring today. My goal of this
paper is to analyze the causes of the integration of Central High and determine if the knowledge of
integration can help us resolve or prevent current world problems. I will... Show more content on

As for the ratification of the 14th amendment, it is a political factor that changed the social
relationships within the United States by administering a government policy. Because the south
was required by the Reconstruction Act of 1867 to accept the new amendment in order to
readmit to the union, they were forced to change their views of freed slaves and allow them to
have equal rights. This new politically administered factor then caused the population to view
each race as equals and allow them to have equal education opportunities. The Jim Crow Laws
can be seen as a sociological factor because segregation is a social relation. The more they
segregated themselves by race, the more their behavior and attitudes towards each other changed.
As one race began to feel superior to the others, a changed had to be made. This was the basis for
the Civil Rights Movement. Meanwhile, the Brown vs. Board case can be interpreted as a cultural
factor. A community came together to justify what they believed was a right and just principle. Just
as Mr. Brown once said culture exists in order to project the infantile fantasies into external reality,
where they may be seen and mastered (Brown). This community had a common belief and stood by
it through it all creating their own cultural

Anselm s Existence of God Refuted Essay
Anselm s Existence of God Refuted
Anselm s Existence of God Refuted
If the only proofs for the existence of God were Aquinas s five ways and Anselm s ontological
argument, in my opinion, Anselm provides the best reasoning. I am not saying that Anselm s
argument is good, or even valid, but just that given the set of proofs by Aquinas and Anselm,
Anselm s is better.
Anselm argues, in effect, that the existence of God is built into the very concept of God. He
proceeds by a form of argument called reductio ad absurdum reduction to absurdity. He attempts to
show that the position of the fool the non believer who has said in his heart, There is no God is
incoherent and leads to absurdity. (Cottingham, 1996: 246)
How does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, just because something exists in the understanding, we would not normally conclude that
it also exists in reality. As Anselm himself points out, a painter may have the completed work of art
in his mind, but that does not make it a real painting. (Cottingham, 1996: 246)
What Anselm tries to show next is that in this case, having an idea in the understanding requires
one to admit that the thing exists in reality as well. For suppose that God exists only in the
understanding. Then we can conceive of a greater being: one who exists in reality as well.
Moreover, that would mean that this God who exists only in the understanding is not the greatest
conceivable being. (Cottingham, 1996: 246)
Now we have a contradiction.
Now come to the case of God. The GCB would have to be wise, because a wise being is greater
than a being that is not wise. In addition, the GCB would have to be just, because justice is better
than injustice. What Anselm is claiming is that the GCB must also exist, because a being that exists
in reality is greater than one that exists merely in the understanding. So:
It would be a contradiction to say; God (the GCB) is not wise
It would be a contradiction to say, God is not just.
In addition, it would be a contradiction to say, God does not exist.
There are many arguments as to why Anselm s argument is invalid. I have chosen three of them,
and have illustrated how these arguments make Anselm s

The History Of Russia
The Russian Federation is a major world power on the economic and political stage, as it is a vast
nation with valuable resources within its borders. Politically, Russia has a history of intervening in
foreign affairs and playing an active part in major world conflicts. This has caused some democratic
countries to impose sanctions on the state, resulting in an economic recession and strained political
relationships. Russiais a semi presidential federation with a communist past. Even today, the
Russian government is still elusive and hesitant to release information. The current President is
Vladimir Putin, who operates out of the capital city of Moscow (CIA). Recently, Russia has been

Russia has been involved in every major war in Europe of the 20th century, including World War
One, World War Two, the Cold War and the Russian Civil War (Rosenberg). Russia also had ties to
the Korean war, as the communist entity supported North Korea during the Cold War era. In recent
politics, Russia s ties with the United States have been complicated over the election of President
Donald Trump and Russia s alliance with the Assad Regime in Syria (Nakashima). There are also
allegations that President Trump s son met with Russian officials regarding Hillary Clinton and that
Jared Kushner proposed a secret Washington Moscow communications line for easy access to
Russian officials. The relationship between Russia and the United States has deteriorated to a level
not reached since the end of the Cold War and dissolution of the Soviet Union. Furthermore, the
threat of a nuclear attack by Russia and its ally, North Korea, are at an all time high.
In terms of economics, Russia is currently recovering from a recession. However, that does not
prevent it from being a world superpower. The Russian GDP had been sharply declining from
2014 2017, but it is still part of the exclusive G20 and G8. The recession was caused by American
sanctions, the Crimean crisis and falling oil prices. Russia has many

Building A Level Of Trust Essay
Building a level of trust between your business and your customers is vital, not only for how your
brand, but also returning customers. There are no shortcuts to making this work, it takes time and
patience, but what are the important factors?
Firstly, understand that e commerce acquires a lot of data. Simple newsletter sign ups may just
involve an email address, or a simple profile to be created. However, more and more retailers are
collecting further data, such as birthdays and location. The full checkout process will involve full
personal details such as billing/home address, delivery/work address and all card details and
security number. Even a phone number for delivery is sometimes required.
Ask yourself the question, do your customers know where you live? When your birthday is? Your
mobile phone number? It s extreme thinking, however, it puts into perspective the level of trust
need to purchase from a new store. Gaining, and more importantly, retaining your customer s trust
should be top priority when running an e commerce business. Here s how to make it, not break it.
1. Customer Service
Your customer service team is your front line of defence. They are your brand ambassadors. The
point of contact at the end of the phone when problems occur. Hire intelligently and treat them
well. Great customer service is rarely rewarded, however, bad service festers. With the correct
resourcing your can hire great brand ambassadors who are great with clients, but people who

Native Americans In Eastern Woodlands
In the Eastern Woodlands, the native Iroquoian people populated the area, who set fires twice a
year to clear away underbrush to allow an easier hunting season. In addition, they had no universal
style of government, with many organized into chiefdoms. Near The Great Lakes, there were
several different types of natives collectively called the Anishinaabe. Many Europeans found that
the Anishinaabe had a vast social landscape, with the peoples of the Ottawas, Ojibwas, and
Potawatomis. Additionally, these people would use canoes to travel across the Great Lakes.
Towards the west in the Great Plains, the Comanches were formidable people of the vast territory.

Spain, Portugal, and France sought to convert natives to the Roman Catholic Church, while
England and the Netherlands believed that Catholicism was corrupt, and attempted to build
support for the Protestant movement in the New World. During the age of exploration and
colonization, Portuguese mariners first found success in establishing trade along the African
coast. They set up trading posts on offshore island using a new ship design, planting a variety of
crops and trading commodities with people along the coast. Additionally, Vasco da Gama
travelled around the tip of Africa to trade with East Africa and India. While their most of their
goods were seen as inferior, da Gama returned with fighting vessels and established trading posts
in the Indian Ocean by using force. Before Europeans joined the African slave trade, slavery was
widespread throughout Africa, and slaves served to pay off debts, sold by their kin in exchange
for goods during famine, or as war captives. The slaves were central to the trans Saharan trade,
and on occasion the slaves would be freed from servitude. Once the Europeans began to exploit the
slave trade, they created a forced migration of African slaves into the

The Republic Of Kenya, An African Country
The Republic of Kenya, an East African country that lies on the equator within the Indian Ocean
to its south east, has a total land area of 581,000 square kilometers and a total water covered area
of 11,000 square kilometers. Kenya is one of the most culturally rich countries with a blend of
different ethnic groups and cultures in Africa. There are at least 40 different ethnic groups in Kenya
today. In terms of religion, Christianity is the most populated in Kenya with about 82.5% of the
Kenyan people are Christians, not limiting Protestants and Catholics (Major Problems). Kenya and
their neighbors are blessed with the abundance of natural resources. These include limestones, salt,
abundance of wildlife, hydropower and more. In terms of education, Kenya continues to have the
highest literacy rate on the whole continent.
However, despite all the perks that Kenya upholds, they face the issues of having incompetent
leadership and poor governance. Dealing with these issues Kenya is struggling to handle
economic growth, both natural and man created problems (Stanford). Choosing the issue was
enriching with knowledge and gives me the opportunity to explain all of the issues under one
accord. The purpose to explain the issues of Kenya and how they are corrupt was well needed to be
addressed because the people of Kenya should not take corruption as normal and treat it like it is a
part of everyday life.

Agency in Punishment and Hedda Gabler.
In Rabindranath Tagore s short story Punishment, Chandara, an 18 year old lower caste woman in
India, seeks her freedom from cultural and familial oppression by allowing herself to be executed.
In Henrik Ibsen s play Hedda Gabler, the protagonist, an aristocratic woman from prosperous 19th
century Norway, asserts her freedom from societal oppression by killing herself.
Considering the socio economic and cultural differences of these female characters, how could
their ends be so similar? In this essay, we ll discuss why these late 19th century, early 20th century
authors chose to make suicide, or the desire for death (or other drastic behavior), agency for their
female characters in these two texts. We ll do this by analyzing the feminist themes of Tagore and
Ibsen, in light of the realist/naturalist literary movement at the time; as well as discussing the ways
the authors allow for autonomy with their characters as well as the ways they restrict their options
in these works.
Tagore and Ibsen shared similar literary and philosophical ideas, which helps to explain their
realistically conflicted oppressed, yet courageously challenging female characters. Naturalism
/realism was the dominant literary trend in the late 19th century, and Tagore and Ibsen featured
elements of realism and naturalism in their work. Their stories and plays contained ordinary people

  • 2. Figurative Language In Stephen King s On Writing 1. Many skilled authors use literary elements and techniques in their stories; for example, imagery, dialogue, and figurative language. Not only do these authors use this devices, they use them correctly. Stephen King, the author of On Writing and many other novels, uses these a lot throughout his novels. Figurative language and imagery plays a huge role in developing King s novel. The Rag s office was a table located in the dirt floored, rock walled, spider infested confines of our basement, somewhere north of the furnace and east of the root cellar, where Clayt and Ella s endless cartons of preserves and canned vegetables were kept (pg. 42). The author uses great imagery in this passage in which he is describing the area where his brother worked. This is effective because it allows the reader to envision the workspace. Grammar is not just a pain in the ass; it s the pole you grab to get your thoughts up on their feet and walking (pg. 121). This is a metaphor, which is the comparison of two things by just stating that one thing is the other. Another example of this would be, Plot is a far bigger tool, the writer s jackhammer (pg. 164). In the first example, grammar is being compared to a pole that a writer grabs hold of. In the second sentence, King is comparing plot to a jackhammer, and it is effective to get the point across and explain the things, grammar and plot in these examples, in an interesting way. In the first sentence, there is also an example of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Environmental Effects Of Plastics Plastic bags have been a popular commodity since the 1970 s due to their convenience and sturdiness; however, plastic bags are a victim of their own success. These flyaway bags have detrimental effects on the environment; they fill the trees and clog the storm drains. In response, many states in the U.S. have imposed bag taxes in an effort to reduce their use. These taxes have reduced the frivolous use of plastic bags and have heightened our awareness of their detrimental effects, but concerns arise over the negative effects of the taxes on the economy and, surprisingly, the environment as well. Plastic bags have become the norm for Americans since the 1970 s due to their convenience. Plastic bags are durable and reusable for other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This poses an economic threat for retailers. The economic advantage of plastic bags are too significant for retailers to ignore. While advocates of these taxes argue that it will reduce the use of plastic bags, many argue that these taxes fail to protect the environment and economy of the U.S. Over a 100 cities across the U.S. have imposed taxes on plastic bags after watching countries in Europe have favorable results. Tony Lowes, director of the Friends of the Irish Environment, claims that Ireland s 15 cent tax on plastic bags has resulted in a 95 percent reduction in their use (qtd. in Roach 3). Similarly, cities in the U.S. imposed taxes in an effort to achieve effective results. A bag tax in Washington D.C. has resulted in a 50 percent decrease in single bag usage (Bayly 3). On the other side of the country, Los Angeles went from using 2.2 million bags a year to using 125,000 a year after the tax on bags went into effect (Bayly 3); nonetheless, advocates of plastic bags have brought to light the harsh reality of taxes. Bag taxes pose an economic threat for both retailers and consumers. Areas that have imposed taxes experienced a decrease in sales while areas not subject to taxes experienced an increase in sales. According to a survey conducted by the National Center for Policy Analysis, these taxes force many stores to reduce their employment by more than 10% (qtd. in Gleason 4). Plastic bag taxes make grocery shopping unaffordable for families below the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Factors Of Social Psychology This movie is chosen for a number of reasons. One because of it s reputation at being the greatest of all time classics. Secondly, it shows examples of behavioral, physiological, and mental aspects of psychology that anyone can judge it and come to their own conclusion. It s an awesome movie to find theories to analyze, not to mention having the greatest ongoing values along with the film. Most of the big theories that I will use deal with of social interaction, which involves with the factors of social psychology. Starting off I would like to point one of the characters from the movie. The character is by Keanu Reeves, who plays the role as Mr. Thomas Anderson, a computer programmer, but he s also living a life as a computer hacker under the alias Neo . The social principle that applies to Neo s character of being a very informational influence. To give a brief summary, Neo is awoken from a simulation of what life is, to the cruel reality which is the exact opposite of everything he s known. Neo experiences all the characteristics of being in an unusual environment and culture, which include but not limited to denial, acceptance, etc. The reason why influences plays a part is because Neo is motivated by the belief that individuals who brought him to reality are correct. This is, what s known as informational influence. There are ten different events.characters, and ideas in the movie that definitely point out to several theories of psychology. The first is an ... • 6. Neil Peart Traveling Music Analysis Traveling Music: Playing Back the Soundtrack to My Life and Times, by Neil Peart, reveals the backstage secrets of himself, in the life of a musician. Peart describes his 50 year lead up to fame with music as his primary inspiration. With the desire to travel, Peart leaves his Canadian home and becomes a drummer, writing lyrics and discovering new sites on the road. His story tells of the hardships a musician goes through in order to succeed in the entertainment industry, as well as find internal success in his own life. Throughout Traveling Music, Peart demonstrates that achievements come with time, and that when staying true to his values, success will occur. Peart describes home as a feeling about yourself, not the place around you, and you can take it with you (339). In this metaphor, home is considered a feeling, rather than a physical place. When working hard with his band, the author has finally made it as far as touring with his band in several countries, making music his home. Peart also states in a revelating mood that he finally knows what happiness is. In the passage, Peart says, ... just at that moment, to be working in that inspiring setting (370). With the phrase just at that moment , the author concludes that he had an epiphany, finally understanding the essence of happiness. Saying that happiness was working in an inspiring setting shows the author learned a lot from making music and arranging his band. Back in the first chapter of Traveling Music, Peart used the phrase Now what? in several paragraphs when struggling to find more work to do in a short amount of time (3). In the last chapter of the memoir, Peart concludes that he found the answer to that now what question and is pleased by the results (375). • 7. Two Organelles Research Paper The largest organelle, the nucleus is a membrane bound organelle that contains the vast majority of the cell s DNA. The nucleus is considered the defining feature of a eukaryotic cell because its presence separates eukaryotes from the more ancient prokaryotic cell. The nucleus is often referred to as the control center of the cellbecause the DNAthat it contains directs all aspects of cellular function (18). While most cells only have one nucleus, some cells (red blood cells) lack a nucleus and are therefore unable to divide and produce daughter cells. In humans, some types of skeletal muscle cells have multiple nuclei during their development; however multinucleated cells can also be associated with inflammation (19) and tumor development (20). The nucleus is bound by the nuclear envelope, a two membrane structure that forms an impermeable barrier around the DNA and other nuclear components, separating them from the cytoplasm. The inner nuclear membrane faces the chromosomes and is a phospholipid bilayer that contains many different proteins. The outer membrane, also a phospholipid bilayer, faces the cytoplasm and in many cells it is continuous with the rough ER (21). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore in addition to providing a protected compartment for the DNA, the nuclear envelope also regulates gene expression by controlling the movement of proteins, RNA and other regulatory molecules into or out of the nucleus ... • 8. Literary Analysis Of John O Connor sFirst Confession Will there ever be an object or idea that can reverse a mistake ? As humans have evolved, there have been different notions created on the consequences of doing certain activities or actions. While the preceding is important to take into mind, does it always have to be so serious? Any individual who grows up does either childish actions or just simple mistakes. O Connor shows how the formality of this can be taken to an extreme point with the story of Jackie. In First Confessionhe creates a humorous tone with the utilization of figurative language and characterization. To begin with, First Confession holds a strong message, but it holds it with a touch of humor. With this story being told from a reflective point of view, it really shows the comical sides of the story. Most of us have those stories that as we reflect on them now, can be very funny; the same was for Jackie. Jackie wrote about his first confession, which was probably from a few years back and now he highlights the funny parts of them. For example, the rivalry between Nora, his sister, and him. A rivalry which then seemed very serious for Jackie, was not that serious in reality. As well, his grandmother s arrival was so bad for him then that he even plotted her murder. The humorous side of this story is reflected mainly in his conversation with the priest. The priest tells him, Between ourselves, there s a lot of people I d like to do the same to, but I d never have the nerve. By breaking this line of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Causes And Treatment Of Sepsis REVIEW OF LITRATURE The term sepsis has been around since prehistoric times. Hippocrates presented the word sepsis 2400 years ago to represent a condition where an overwhelming infection leads to tissue breakdown with rotting, foul odour, and disease. The ancient Roman scholar and writer (116 BC 27 BC), Marcus Terentius Varro mentioned that small creatures, invisible to the eye, fill the atmosphere, and breathed through the nose cause dangerous diseases. In the early 1990s at a conference convened by the American College of Chest Physicians and the Society of Critical Care Medicine modern definitions of sepsis were termed in detail. At that time, sepsis was described as a systemic response to a physiologic insult including infections and other etiologies that lead to the development of further organ injury, ultimately culminating in multiple organ dysfunction syndromes. The word bacteraemia is used when bacteria are isolated from the blood whether clinical symptoms are present or not while the words sepsis or septicaemia is used for the isolation of bacteria in blood in combination with clinical symptoms and signs of infections. Neonatal sepsis, also named Sepsis neonatorum , represents to a group of physical and laboratory findings that occur in response to invasive infection within the first 30 days (neonatal) of life. • 12. Misguided Rationale The truth is not always present in the news. Reporters make mistakes, but when that wrong information gets to spread the problem begins. The media is in a race on putting out information. The danger is that there is no checking to make sure the information is true. Media is in a cycle of the news getting a hold of an alternative fact, the media spreading it, a powerful sourcerestating the information, and the general audience seeing that story as fact. That information can then be turned into political policies and ideologies. When the person that are spreading the wrong facts gets challenged with the truth, they tend to a backlash towards the critic. They refuse to admit to their mistake deepening the misguided rationale behind their fact.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gladstone spent the reading illustrating how false news gets spread. Facts can be giving because they are catchy. This does not make them accurate. When a powerful source gets the fake news, that is when there is a problem. Technology increases the likelihood of alternative facts being caught. There is a problem when the person who spoke the information refuses to admit their mistake. Gladstone uses the example of Lou Dobbs to show this point ( Gladstone 54). He stated that if we reported it, it s a fact when confronted with the inaccurate numbers he used in his report. Trump does a similar argument when confronted with his wrong information. Bill O Rielly pointed out that Trump was wrong when he stated that thousands of Muslims were seen celebrating after 9 /11. Trump refused to admit his mistake, but instead used a Breitbart article that agreed with him as his defense (Oliver). This shows that people are after the news the want to hear. They both saw what they said as true, even when others showed them the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Gender Inequality In Gender And The Media 1.0 Introduction Gender inequality is the idea or situation that men and women are not equal, and is a problem in countries around the world. I will be focusing my research on this type of inequality in Canada. It is an issue for both men and women that they are exposed to at birth, is fed by the media as a teen, and continues in their everyday life as an adult. My approach to this issue is examining three topics that are related to my assignment: childhood, everyday life, and the media. Acts of gender inequality can be found within these broad points that negatively or positively affect males and females. For childhood, there will be toys, clothing, and child advertising. In everyday life, I will cover the workplace, travel, and costs. Media will include celebrities, television/movies, and social media. My thesis statement is: gender inequality is evident in many stages of human development through childhood, teenage years, and adulthood. Gender inequality is a real thing and it is proven in childhood, as a teenager, and adult. 2.0 Discussion 2.1 Childhood Through clothing, toys, children are negatively influenced by the stereotypes that accompany them. In clothing stores around Canada, the apparel of young boy s and girl s is stereotypical. Seen immediately in clothing stores is the extreme contrast between the two sections. The girl s section is filled with an abundance of sparkles, sequins, flowers, and pink on all articles of clothing. The boy s section is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Elizabeth Bennet As An Idealist In Jane Austen s Pride And... An idealist is someone who follows and is influenced by ideals and standards as opposed to considering the practicalities of a situation. In other words, an idealist does not carefully think every situation through, but rather responds to the norm instead. In Jane Austen s novel, Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet, the novel s protagonist, is an intelligent and sharp individual, who is profoundly interested in romantic relationships and getting married, as her mother wants her to do. Elizabeth, willing to marry anyone for the sake of romance, becomes easily distracted and, in turn, does not consider every aspect of the situations she entangles herself in before fastening conclusions. Because she so easily succumbs to the powers of romance and often leaves her better judgement at home, Elizabeth Bennet can be considered an idealist. At the dawn of the tale, Elizabeth, searching fiercely for romance, comes across a handsome militia officer named George Wickham. Elizabeth is instantly attracted to him; his pleasant appearance and charming personality are enough to draw her in. As she listens to Wickham speak, especially negatively about Fitzwilliam Darcy, an aristocrat, she does not question or slightly doubt a word that he is saying. She is so swayed by his good looks and charming manner that she does not think for a second that he could be a malicious man; she is falling under his spell ignorantly. Elizabeth s strong desire for romance shuts down her judgement and causes her to fall in love with Wickham, without thought. At this point, she thinks it is best to follow the standards and be an idealist, because she has always been told to get married by her mother, Mrs. Bennet. Mrs. Bennet can take some blame for Elizabeth s idealism, or strong desire for romance. She is constantly reminding her five daughters that they must find a man in particular, a wealth man as soon as possible so they can marry. Mrs. Bennet s desperation for her daughters wedlock is demonstrated when she says, If I can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield, and all the others equally well married, I shall have nothing to wish for (Austen 17). Perhaps this was Elizabeth s primary influence in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My Trip To Mandalay Essay Newsflash: Mandalay doesn t suck 7 things to do Planning my trip to Myanmar, I told a couple of people about my itinerary: Starting from Yangon, I wanted to work my way up north over Inle Lake and Bagan to Mandalay. Persuading poets have been writing poems on love, lust and nature since the beginning of time. The 7 poems that are analysed here range from the 16th 19th centuries. These poems are all written by men arguing and persuading the effects of love. In To virgins , it appears that Robert Herrick uses small amounts of natural imagery to persuade virgins and to stress the fast passing of time. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He ends the fourth stanza with a negative mood by using you may forever tarry . This phrase means that for the rest of your life you will suffer with loneliness if you don t follow his commands. Herrick s poem is in an ordered structure and has an alternate rhyming rhythm that makes the poem more commanding. The lack of imagery in this poem gives it a more uneasy and blunt mood. The pace of the rhythm in this poem is quick which links in with the expressing of fast time and adds to the effect of a threatening poem. This poem suggests to me that maybe he is desperate so he uses the persuasion accordingly. This poem compares well to Of Beauty by Richard Fanshawe because both of the poems are in an ordering mood and have a positive and negative part of the stanza s. It also compares well to To his coy mistress by Andrew Marvell. Both of the poems are arguing that time is running out so let me love you now while we have the time. They both use a lot of time statements such as long loves day , nearer he s to setting and ten years before . The second poem, Of Beauty by Richard Fanshawe, is a short, one stanza poem. It uses personification during the middle of the stanza. Earth her winter coat may cast, and renew her beauty past .

The projection sub systems of CT scanners has experienced changes in 3 aspects including parallel, fan, and cone beam systems cite{sidky2008image} cite{vo2014reliable}. Sidky and Pan cite{sidky2008image} proposed a theoretical framework to show how accurate circular cone beam CT image reconstruction can be done from reduced data sampling. In data acquisition phase, they assumed that the estimated projection data is within a specified tolerance of the available data and the values of voxels are non negative. To observe these constraints, a projection onto convex sets was considered, and the total variation (TV) gets minimized by steepest descent with an adaptive step size. They argued that the TV algorithm can resolve low contrast structures in the presence of high contrast objects even when the projection data sets are limited in angular range or view number, and when the low contrast object is not at the mid plane of the circular x ray trajectory. Qi and Chen cite{zhihua2008direct} considered image reconstruction in fan beam based CT in which the derived formula applies to the real domain. First, inverse Fourier transform was applied to use the multiplication instead of convolution in Fourier space. Afterward, the range of calculation was extended to cover redundancy. As the health care market demands change, so does the managed health care plans. These ever changing plans are crucial for the survival of managed health care plans and companies (Kongstvedt, 2001). Change is inevitable when it is a faltering system; such as health care and insurance, which means in the health care industry there is nothing constant in the contemporary managed care systems. When speaking of managed health care, some find it to be an institution set forth as a response to the consistently rising health care costs, that some viewed as detrimental to the United States economy as a whole. Others viewed managed care as a documented response to health care quality problems that have long been ignored. That the problems managed health care would specifically help rectify patterns of over and underuse, misuse, and any geographic variation in the medical services provided to citizens (Kongstvedt, 2001). Both of these ideals had a hand in the wide spread adoption of managed health care in the United States, they do not define the foundational and personal changes that needed to occur in order to accommodate such a large change. Our results supported this hypothesis since there was no growth in the lettuce seeds when the bulb was present. This occurred because the bulb releases allicin which prevents the uptake of organic substances in the seeds (Djurdjevic 2004). Therefore, we reject the null hypothesis. The data suggests that our alternative hypotheses were correct. During our experiment, there were a few possible sources of error. One is the presence of mold growth in some of the petri dishes. Allum (2011), cited in McAvoy (2017), (pp. 33 38), studies included pseudoscience ideologies such as Astrology to foretell events in individual s life, as well lack scientific literacy from participants of how Astrology and Astronomy were etymologically classified. • 37. The Contemporary Water Crisis Of Mumbai This essay will explore the contemporary water crisis in Mumbai, India; a rapidly growing megacity that for decades has struggled to provide adequate access to water for their 20 million residents, and in particular the more than 10 million people living in unsanctioned self erected slum communities that surround the cityproper. Beyond the technical and structural barriers lie ideological and cultural impediments that I will argue are borne in part from an idealized quest for modernity informed by free market capitalism and neoliberal ideology. I will argue that this has created deep cultural and societal rifts that have been exploited by vested economic interests through discursive and political campaigns that seek to delegitimize the right of Mumbai s citizens to water, and by extension life. The spectre of climate change provides a backdrop for an existential struggle that has been unfolding for decades and appears likely to continue. This essay will examine the circumstances and failures that preceded the 2014 landmark ruling handed down by the High Court of Mumbai which affirmed the inalienable right to water, regardless of legal status of one s domicile, including attempts to privatize water services in various regions of the city. • 40. John Stuart Mill Tyranny Of Majority 1.Introduction There are different and various groups who have their own interest and agenda. One of the values that a democratic system tries to achieve is equal representation to all of the groups that it embraces. However, people often fear whether a particular group will project more influence than others. Due to the nature of democratic system where the decision is made according to the majority rule, many critics argue the possibility of tyranny by majority where the group with the most number of members rules in favor of its preference over the interests of other groups who are considered to be minority with less members. Furthermore, people fear whether such majority favored interest will be forced up on minority groups who do not agree with such view of the majority. Such takeover of majority in politics is what we call tyranny of majority However, others believe that minority group can also become a tyrant in a society, triumphing over the majority of a society. Shakespeare and Webster represent the female characters in Hamlet and The duchess of Malfi by using general themes such as the patriarchy and the social control, the female identity and its independence, this institution of marriage, the expressions of sexuality and finally women shown to be either conformist or transgressive. Men were firmly in control in the Elizabethan and Jacobean era, and the expectations for women were to stay home, cook, clean and raise a family. Women s status and roles were subject to the Tyranny of patriarchy, they were given strict disciplinary rules to follow whether by law or unspoken norms to prevent from rebellion. Women s rights were restricted, legally, socially and economically, unlike today were women are more powerful and independent. Today women and men are seen to be equal and women can do pretty much everything a man can do (voting, working, becoming president) although there are many people still today who disagree with women having these rights. There are aspects of renaissance patriarchy demonstrated in both plays, which is exercised as a form of social control using dominant gender ideologies. Hamlets in his first soliloquy talks about his mother and how quick she was to remarry after only 1 month of his father s death, he then says Frailty, thy name is woman not only including his mother but the whole women population also indicating that he has superior intellect and moral understanding. As for the ratification of the 14th amendment, it is a political factor that changed the social relationships within the United States by administering a government policy. Because the south was required by the Reconstruction Act of 1867 to accept the new amendment in order to readmit to the union, they were forced to change their views of freed slaves and allow them to have equal rights. This new politically administered factor then caused the population to view each race as equals and allow them to have equal education opportunities. The Jim Crow Laws can be seen as a sociological factor because segregation is a social relation. The more they segregated themselves by race, the more their behavior and attitudes towards each other changed. As one race began to feel superior to the others, a changed had to be made. Anselm s Existence of God Refuted Essay Anselm s Existence of God Refuted Anselm s Existence of God Refuted If the only proofs for the existence of God were Aquinas s five ways and Anselm s ontological argument, in my opinion, Anselm provides the best reasoning. I am not saying that Anselm s argument is good, or even valid, but just that given the set of proofs by Aquinas and Anselm, Anselm s is better. Anselm argues, in effect, that the existence of God is built into the very concept of God. He proceeds by a form of argument called reductio ad absurdum reduction to absurdity. He attempts to show that the position of the fool the non believer who has said in his heart, There is no God is incoherent and leads to absurdity. (Cottingham, 1996: 246) How does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, just because something exists in the understanding, we would not normally conclude that it also exists in reality. As Anselm himself points out, a painter may have the completed work of art in his mind, but that does not make it a real painting. (Cottingham, 1996: 246) What Anselm tries to show next is that in this case, having an idea in the understanding requires one to admit that the thing exists in reality as well. For suppose that God exists only in the understanding. Then we can conceive of a greater being: one who exists in reality as well. Moreover, that would mean that this God who exists only in the understanding is not the greatest conceivable being. (Cottingham, 1996: 246) Now we have a contradiction. Now come to the case of God. The GCB would have to be wise, because a wise being is greater than a being that is not wise. In addition, the GCB would have to be just, because justice is better than injustice. What Anselm is claiming is that the GCB must also exist, because a being that exists in reality is greater than one that exists merely in the understanding. So: It would be a contradiction to say; God (the GCB) is not wise It would be a contradiction to say, God is not just. In addition, it would be a contradiction to say, God does not exist. In Rabindranath Tagore s short story Punishment, Chandara, an 18 year old lower caste woman in India, seeks her freedom from cultural and familial oppression by allowing herself to be executed. In Henrik Ibsen s play Hedda Gabler, the protagonist, an aristocratic woman from prosperous 19th century Norway, asserts her freedom from societal oppression by killing herself. Considering the socio economic and cultural differences of these female characters, how could their ends be so similar?
