1. Remove bolts (1) and remove manifold (2) with gasket.
NOTE: The following step is for the installation of the exhaust manifold.
NOTE: Apply 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of bolts (1).
2. Position gasket and manifold (2). Install all manifold bolts (1) finger tight, then tighten evenly to a
torque of 55 ± 5 N·m (40 ± 4 lb ft).

3. Apply 5P3931 Anti-Seize to turbocharger mounting studs. Position turbocharger gasket and
turbocharger. Install four nuts (6). Tighten nuts to a torque of 55 ± 5 N·m (40 ± 4 lb ft).
1. Remove two bolts (1) and remove oil supply line (2). Remove two bolts (3), loosen hose clamp (4)
and move drain tube (5) out of the way.

Start By:
a. remove turbocharger
Place cartridge assembly (4) in tooling (B).
Loosen clamp (3) and remove cartridge assembly (4).
1. Place turbocharger in tooling (A). Put alignment marks on all the housings. Loosen clamp (1) and
remove housing (2).
4. Position drain tube with gasket and install bolts (3), then tighten hose clamp (4). Position oil supply
line (2) with gasket and install bolts (1).
Disassemble & Assemble Turbocharger
8. 4. Remove nut (5) and remove compressor wheel (6).
5. Remove snap ring (7), then use two screw drivers and remove adapter plate (8). Remove O-ring
seal (9) and inspect.
6. Remove and inspect bushing and seal (10).
7. Remove oil deflector (11) and thrust ring (12).
8. Remove bearing (13), sleeve (14) and thrust ring (15).
9. Lift housing assembly (19) off of shaft and wheel (20).
10. Use snap ring pliers and remove wrap around snap ring (16), then remove double bushing (17).
NOTICE
Use a 5S9566 Sliding T-Wrench and a universal socket to remove nut
(5). Do not bend or add stress to the shaft when nut (5) is loosened or
tightened.
9. Do not bend or add stress to the shaft when nut (5) is tightened.
18. Install compressor wheel (6) on the shaft. Put one drop of 9S2365 Retaining Compound on the
threads of the shaft. Install nut (5) and torque it to 14.4 ± 0.5 N·m (144 ± 5 lb in).
19. Remove cartridge assembly (4) from tooling (B) and install it into the housing on tooling (A).
Align marks and tighten clamp (3).
20. Install housing (2). Align marks and tighten clamp (1).
End By:
a. install turbocharger
11. Remove seal ring (21) and backplate (18).
12. Check all parts of the turbocharger for damage. If any parts are damaged, use new parts for
replacement. See Special Instructions Form No. SMHS6854 for turbocharger reconditioning. Also,
see Guidelines For Reusable Parts, Form No. SEBF8018.
NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the turbocharger.
13. Make sure that all the oil passages in the turbocharger cartridge housing are clean and free of dirt
and foreign material.
NOTE: Do not put oil on any parts of the turbocharger until after the compressor wheel has been
assembled, put clean engine oil into the oil inlet of the turbocharger.
14. With shaft and wheel (20) in tooling (B), install seal (21).
15. Install double bushing (17) into housing (19) and install wrap around snap ring (16). Position
housing assembly (19) onto shaft and wheel (20).
16. Install thrust ring (15), bearing (13), sleeve (14) and thrust ring (12). Install oil deflector (11) then
bushing and seal (10).
17. With oil seal (9) in place, position adapter plate (8) and install snap ring (7).

Camshaft
Remove & Install Camshaft

22. Remove camshaft retainer bolt (1) and remove camshaft assembly (2).
The following steps are for the installation of the camshaft assembly.
NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the cylinder head. With the cylinder head in place, just wire the
cam roller followers up off the camshaft and then remove the camshaft.
Wire used to hold cam roller followers up off camshaft.

23. NOTE: When installing the camshaft, rotating it both clockwise and counter clockwise directions will
help prevent it from binding in the bearing bores.
2. Put engine oil on the lobes and journals of the camshaft. Carefully install the camshaft.
NOTE: When installing the camshaft, be sure the number one cylinder is at (TDC) top dead center of
the compression stroke with the timing pin installed in the flywheel. Camshaft timing is very
important. Cam gear timing marks must line up with idler gear timing marks as illustrated. For more
information about timing of engine, refer to Specifications module, Form No. SENR3908.

24. Start By:
a. remove camshaft assembly
3. With the camshaft properly timed and positioned, install retaining bolt (1). Tighten bolt (1) to a
torque of 48 ± 7 N·m (37 ± 5 lb ft). Remove the wire that was used to hold the cam roller followers
up off the camshaft.
End By:
a. install fuel transfer pump
b. install front cover
c. install front pulley and damper
d. install fuel injectors
e. install rocker arm assemblies and push rods
1. Wrap camshaft portion of camshaft and gear assembly (1) with paper towels to protect the camshaft
from being damaged.
Disassembly & Assembly of Camshaft And Gear Assembly
25. Place camshaft and gear assembly (1) in a press. Press camshaft (5) from gear (4).
The following steps are for the assembly of the camshaft and the gear assembly.
2. Remove six bolts (2). Remove timing/speed sensor ring gear (3). The timing/speed ring gear is
located on gear (4) by dowel (6).
NOTE: Care must be taken not to damage timing/speed sensor ring gear (3) when removing. Using
the prybar, work around the ring gear and pry the ring gear off a little at a time.

NOTE:
Care must be taken not to allow the camshaft to fall to the floor when
pressing it from the gear. Also be sure that a camshaft lobe does not
catch on the press plates.
NOTICE
26. 5. Align timing gear sensor ring gear (3) with dowel (6). "Front" is marked and visible when installing
timing/speed ring gear sensor.
NOTE: Care must be taken not to damage the timing/speed sensor ring gear when installing. Using a
mallet tap around the ring gear and drive it on a little at a time until it bottoms.
6. Install six bolts (2).
End By:
a. install camshaft assembly
4. To install gear (4) on camshaft (5), place gear in the oven at 300°C (572°F) for 30 minutes and
then install. Be sure the woodruff key is properly aligned and the gear is flush with the camshaft
flange.
