Null Bangalore | Pentesters Approach to AWS IAMDivyanshu
#Abstract:
- Learn more about the real-world methods for auditing AWS IAM (Identity and Access Management) as a pentester. So let us proceed with a brief discussion of IAM as well as some typical misconfigurations and their potential exploits in order to reinforce the understanding of IAM security best practices.
- Gain actionable insights into AWS IAM policies and roles, using hands on approach.
#Prerequisites:
- Basic understanding of AWS services and architecture
- Familiarity with cloud security concepts
- Experience using the AWS Management Console or AWS CLI.
- For hands on lab create account on [killercoda.com](https://killercoda.com/cloudsecurity-scenario/)
# Scenario Covered:
- Basics of IAM in AWS
- Implementing IAM Policies with Least Privilege to Manage S3 Bucket
- Objective: Create an S3 bucket with least privilege IAM policy and validate access.
- Steps:
- Create S3 bucket.
- Attach least privilege policy to IAM user.
- Validate access.
- Exploiting IAM PassRole Misconfiguration
-Allows a user to pass a specific IAM role to an AWS service (ec2), typically used for service access delegation. Then exploit PassRole Misconfiguration granting unauthorized access to sensitive resources.
- Objective: Demonstrate how a PassRole misconfiguration can grant unauthorized access.
- Steps:
- Allow user to pass IAM role to EC2.
- Exploit misconfiguration for unauthorized access.
- Access sensitive resources.
- Exploiting IAM AssumeRole Misconfiguration with Overly Permissive Role
- An overly permissive IAM role configuration can lead to privilege escalation by creating a role with administrative privileges and allow a user to assume this role.
- Objective: Show how overly permissive IAM roles can lead to privilege escalation.
- Steps:
- Create role with administrative privileges.
- Allow user to assume the role.
- Perform administrative actions.
- Differentiation between PassRole vs AssumeRole

The CBC machine is a common diagnostic tool used by doctors to measure a patient's red blood cell count, white blood cell count and platelet count. The machine uses a small sample of the patient's blood, which is then placed into special tubes and analyzed. The results of the analysis are then displayed on a screen for the doctor to review. The CBC machine is an important tool for diagnosing various conditions, such as anemia, infection and leukemia. It can also help to monitor a patient's response to treatment.

PAST PERFORMANCE
CONSTRUCTION
US Naval Facilities Command SE Naval Hospital
Exam Room and Communications Modernization
8-koi provides all labor, material, equipment, transportation, and supervision necessary to effect renovation of
Naval Hospital Jacksonville, to standardize 94 exam rooms, operational areas, common areas and update the
communications infrastructure. The work includes deconstruction, walls, ceilings, floors, other general construction
trades, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical. All work is performed while the facility is staffed and remains fully
operational. Extensive coordination is required with the facility, departments and vendors. Logistics and planning
are key for the successful acceptance of the new systems prior to dismantling and removing the older ones.
Trident Wharf at CCAFS Naval Ordnance Test Unit (NOTU)
Design Build Utility Replacement
8-koi designed, removed, and replaced the shore support utility systems including water, sewer, oily waste, fire
control system, and the low-pressure air systems on the wharf. 8-koi conducted, performed and implemented a
value engineering study that resulted in approximately $10,000 in savings to the customer. 8-koi performed all
environmental assessments and met all permitting thresholds. Some value engineering that was conducted was
changing the pipe material in the underground distribution to HDPE for corrosion resistance. Measures were taken
for all the pier side utility replacement to ensure environmental permitting would not be required.
Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville
Fuel Farm Storage Building Project
8-koi provided all the labor, materials, equipment, supervision, and quality control necessary to construct the pre-
engineered metal Fuel Farm Storage building within the airfield control area. The scope of work also encompassed
horizontal site improvements, utilities, and pavements. This work was carried out within an operational Fueling
area, ensuring that it did not disrupt the facility's operational and mission objectives.
DESIGN ENGINEERING
NASA Space Station Processing Facility
Design-Build Science Annex
The 8-koi team performed the complete design and build of the biological science laboratory facility at the SSPF,
which included site civil, architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, process piping, controls, fire
detection and protection, as well as data systems. The building and systems were modeled using BIM. LEED Silver®
certification was awarded to the facility through the team's utilization of a high efficiency roofing system, energy
efficient equipment, variable frequency drive motors, LED lighting, occupancy sensors, and building control and
automation system. The facility was completed on schedule and within budget. The facility is currently in use and
continues to impact scientific research being performed aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Eastern Florida State College
CHW System Upgrades for Melbourne Campus
The 8-koi team studied the impact of adding two new buildings, totaling approximately 120,000 sqft, would have
on the chiller and hot water systems. Based on that study, the team designed appropriate modifications and
additions to the chiller plant. This involved developing a parallel loop on the campus’ south side, with a separate
pumping system configuration for future buildings, as well as replacing one of the cooling towers to maximize the
plant’s capacity within the existing footprint. One of the challenges involved the condenser water system, which
was piped without redundancy considerations. The upgrade ensured that any chiller and cooling tower
combination would work. This was done by devising an outdoor CW pumping system. In order to guarantee long-
term reliability, the team designed an open enclosure with a roof structure to stave off tower spray and corrosion.
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station
Design SLC-46 Lightning Protection System
The 8-koi team provided the complete electrical design for the
Lightning Protection System (LPS) and beacon lights, including
power, grounding and bonding per all code and regulatory
requirements. The team of engineers performed transient load
analysis for the catenary LPS and provided the criteria to design
the structural steel tower and fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) mast
on top of the tower. The tower and FRP mast were designed to
support dead loads, live loads, thermal loads, splash pressures
from the launch vehicle, hurricane wind loads, as well as all loads
imposed on the tower and mast from the catenary system itself.
Construction support for this project included submittal reviews,
RFI, field observations, test result verifications, FRP mast
manufacturing inspection and record drawings.
