Abolishing Standardized Tests Standardized tests determine such a drastic amount of one s future. Not
only do students fail standardized tests, but they also lack the knowledge that one expects a child to
learn in their current grade. In general, teachers focus on preparing students for tests and not truly
teaching the material. This forces the question of whether or not standardized tests measure what
students have learned or their test taking skills. Many students have terrible test taking skills, which
results in substantially low scores. This does not result from lack of knowledge of the material, but
rather because they do not understand how to effectively take and finish tests. Students deserve a
proper education, therefore require a reliable educator. The majority of these failures result in lower
graduation rates, and the percent of workforce drastically drops. Standardized tests such as the

CHOLERA
Disease Defined Cholera is an infection of the small intestine that causes a large amount of watery
diarrhea. Cholera is a bacterial disease (caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae) usually spread
through contaminated water. The bacteria, which are found in fecal contaminated food and water and
in raw or undercooked seafood, produce a toxin that affects the intestines causing diarrhea, vomiting,
and severe fluid and electrolyte loss. This overwhelming dehydration is the outstanding characteristic

In this setting, the disease occurs primarily in young children, who are exposed to the organism for the
first time, and in the elderly, who have lower gastric acid production and waning immunity. The poor
are at greatest risk because they often lack safe water supplies, are unable to maintain proper hygiene
within the home, and may depend on street vendors or other unregulated sources for food and drink.
Recent epidemiologic research suggests that an individual s susceptibility to cholera (and other
diarrheal infections) is affected by their blood type: those with type O blood are the most susceptible,
while those with type AB are the most resistant. Between these two extremes are the A and B blood
types, with type A being more resistant than type B.

Why Columbus Day Should Not Be a Holiday Christopher Columbus has been viewed as a hero for
several centuries. Children in elementary schools all over the nation are taught that he discovered
America. However, there were many other people who were indigenous to the land already and the
Vikings arrived in America almost 500 years before Columbus. Christopher Columbus, as it turned
out, was responsible for widespread genocide; he permitted his men to rape, murder, mutilate and
enslave indigenous people. The evil deeds of Columbus far outweigh the few accomplishments he

These nomads continued moving all the way to South America. By the time Europeans arrived in
America, there were already at least forty to fifty million indigenous people inhabiting the land (Faber
4 5). Other explorers, from Norway, Greenland, and Iceland reached America centuries before
Columbus (Faber ix). Although these people attempted to live in this new land, they didn t stay long,
and failed to create a lasting historical impact (Faber 20 26).
Columbus never even walked on what we now call the United States of America. Where ever he did
land, he was motivated only by his own greed. Columbus came for the gold, spices, and slaves. In his
diary, he mentioned gold 75 times just in the first two weeks, alone (Katz 13). Indians who weren t
able to find gold, were punished by having their hands cut off. Most slaves died en route to Spain.
Many Indian females were taken as sex slaves, some as young as nine and ten years old. Columbus
forced cooperation from the Indians by disfiguring them and using them as examples. Even worse, he
used hunting dogs to tear the Indians apart. Many natives committed suicide, and murdered their own
children to save them from such a horrible life. Those who survived the voyage were worked to death.

Though such controversies alone have many theological and religious implications, they can only be
truly understood in the political and historical context in which they arose.
Religious icons, or images, may include paintings, murals, portraits, or mosaics, which, in the seventh
through ninth centuries, commonly depicted Christ, the likeness of a saint, or a particular scene from
scripture. The dispute over the use of icons and religious imagery in the Church, and the nature of this
use amongst the laity, began in the Eastern Roman Empire, or Byzantine Empire, in the late seventh
century, with the movement against icons, or the iconoclasm movement, reaching its height in the mid
ninth century. The use of Icons in Christian practice began in the Coptic Church in Egypt, and spread
throughout the Byzantium Empire, developing into a vital form of religious education and
communication for the laity throughout the East. Those who opposed religious iconography, did so on
the basis of scripture, as the practice of icon use was clearly condemned in Old Testament text. As the
use of every religious icon could not be explicitly regulated, it was difficult for religious and imperial
authorities to determine how such icons were used by the public. Thus, as it was unknown whether the
laity prayed before or to the icons in their community, all religious icons were removed to prevent the
risk of unorthodoxy and the potential practice of idolatry (Brubaker et al., 2011).
