This year’s International Day of Forests comes at a critical inflection point, as global leaders hover between unprecedented ambition and devastating complacency. While recent commitments make progress toward global forest protection more feasible than ever before, industrial pressures on forests continue to deforest and degrade the high-ecosystem integrity forests critical in securing a safe and sustainable future.

A call for global accountability on the International Day of Forests

This year’s International Day of Forests comes at a critical inflection point, as global leaders
hover between unprecedented ambition and devastating complacency. While recent
commitments make progress toward global forest protection more feasible than ever before,
industrial pressures on forests continue to deforest and degrade the high-ecosystem integrity
forests critical in securing a safe and sustainable future.
The UN has designated the theme this year as “Forests and Innovation,” celebrating the
intersection between forests and technology in addressing the climate and biodiversity crises.
We, however, are calling for a focus on something even more foundational to driving positive
change: accountability.
Countries have made groundbreaking commitments under the climate and biodiversity
conventions that can not only drive forest protection, but spur solutions and new sustainable
economies.
For decades, however, the international community has failed to follow through on its
commitments. Governments, particularly in the Global North, have signed international
agreements on forests with one hand while weakening them with the other, creating an
inequitable and inconsistent system inhospitable to progress. In fact, while some governments
have already made strides toward delivering on this ambition, others are pursuing workarounds,
loopholes, and policies that actively undermine their commitments, bolstered by industries that
claim to want progress but instead cling to the status quo. With only a handful of years left to
avoid catastrophic climate change and biodiversity collapse, there is no more time for failed
promises from governments and lip service from the marketplace.
Innovation in an accountability vacuum is not only prone to failure, but dangerous.
Instead, we call for accountability. Accountability, not just in the tropics but also in the Global
North, to halting and reversing deforestation and forest degradation by 2030. Accountability to
principles of equity rather than protectionist impulses. Accountability to scientific integrity and
to the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. Accountability to present and future
generations over short-term interests and industries that claim to embody innovation but instead
hold back the development of sustainable economies.
Six years from now, International Day of Forests must be a celebration of what international
unity was able to accomplish. That can happen only under a shared, equitable sense of
responsibility and a commitment to truly global progress.
With accountability, innovation will follow.

Un llamamiento a la rendición de cuentas mundial sobre los bosques
21 de marzo de 2024
El Día Internacional de los Bosques de este año llega en un punto de inflexión crítico, ya que los
líderes mundiales se debaten entre una ambición sin precedentes y una complacencia
devastadora. Aunque los recientes compromisos hacen más factible que nunca el progreso hacia
la protección de los bosques a nivel mundial, las presiones industriales sobre los bosques
continúa la deforestación y degradación de los bosques de alta integridad ecosistémica,
fundamentales para garantizar un futuro seguro y sostenible.
La ONU ha designado el tema de este año como "Bosques e Innovación", para celebrar la
intersección entre los bosques y la tecnología para hacer frente a las crisis del clima y la
biodiversidad. Nosotros, sin embargo, pedimos que se preste atención a algo aún más
fundamental para impulsar un cambio positivo: la rendición de cuentas.
Los países han asumido compromisos pioneros en el marco de los convenios sobre el clima y la
biodiversidad que no sólo pueden impulsar la protección de los bosques, sino también
soluciones y nuevas economías sustentables.
Sin embargo, durante décadas, la comunidad internacional no ha cumplido sus compromisos.
Los gobiernos, particularmente en el Norte Global, han firmado acuerdos internacionales sobre
bosques con una mano mientras los debilitaban con la otra, lo que ha creado un sistema desigual
e incoherente inhóspito para el progreso. De hecho, mientras que algunos gobiernos ya han dado
pasos hacia el cumplimiento de esta ambición, otros buscan soluciones alternativas, lagunas
jurídicas y políticas que socavan activamente sus compromisos, reforzados por industrias que
afirman querer progresar pero que, en cambio, se aferran al status quo. Con sólo un puñado de
años para evitar un cambio climático catastrófico y el colapso de la biodiversidad, no hay más
tiempo para promesas fallidas de los gobiernos y palabrería del mercado.
La innovación en un vacío de responsabilidad no sólo es propensa al fracaso, sino peligrosa.
En cambio, pedimos rendición de cuentas. Responsabilidad, no sólo en los trópicos sino también
en el Norte Global, para detener y revertir la deforestación y la degradación de los bosques para
2030. Responsabilidad con los principios de equidad en lugar de impulsos proteccionistas.
Responsabilidad ante la integridad científica y los derechos de los pueblos indígenas y las
comunidades locales. Rendir cuentas a las generaciones presentes y futuras por encima de los
intereses a corto plazo y de las industrias que pretenden encarnar la innovación pero que, en
cambio, frenan el desarrollo de economías sostenibles.
Dentro de seis años, el Día Internacional de los Bosques debe ser una celebración de lo que la
unidad internacional fue capaz de lograr. Eso sólo puede ocurrir bajo un sentido compartido y
equitativo de la responsabilidad y un compromiso con el progreso verdaderamente global.
Con responsabilidad, continuará la innovación.

Un appel à la responsabilisation mondiale sur les forêts
Le 21 mars 2024
La Journée internationale des forêts atteint cette année un point d’inflexion critique, alors que les
dirigeants mondiaux oscillent entre ambition sans précédent et complaisance dévastatrice.
Tandis que les progrès en faveur de la protection des forêts mondiales sont désormais plus
réalisables que jamais en raison de récents engagements récents, les industries continuent
d’exercer une forte pression sur les forêts en les déboisant et les dégradant à l’intégrité des
écosystèmes forestiers, cruciaux pour garantir un avenir sûr et durable.
Les « Forêts et l’innovation » est la thématique choisie cette année par l’ONU, célébrant ainsi
l’intersection nécessaire entre les forêts et la technologie pour faire face aux crises climatiques et
de biodiversité. Cependant, nous appelons à nous concentrer sur quelque chose d’encore plus
fondamental pour favoriser un changement positif: la responsabilité.
Les pays ont pris des engagements révolutionnaires dans le cadre des conventions sur le climat
et la biodiversité qui peuvent non seulement favoriser la protection des forêts, mais aussi
stimuler des solutions et de nouvelles économies durables.
Mais depuis des décennies, la communauté internationale manque à respecter ses engagements.
Les gouvernements, en particulier dans le Nord global, ont signé d’une main des accords
internationaux sur les forêts tout en les affaiblissant de l’autre, créant un système inéquitable et
incohérent, non favorable au progrès. En effet, alors que certains gouvernements ont déjà fait
des avancées vers la réalisation de cette ambition, d’autres recherchent toujours des solutions de
contournement, des failles et des politiques qui in fine sapent activement leurs engagements; tout
cela soutenu par des industries qui prétendent chérir le progrès, mais qui en vérité souhaitent
plutôt imposer un statu quo. Il ne reste que quelques années pour éviter un changement
climatique catastrophique et un effondrement de la bbiodiversité; le temps est révolu des
promesses infructueuses des gouvernements et des belles paroles du marché.
L’innovation dans un vide de responsabilité est non seulement vouée à l’échec, mais aussi
dangereuse.
Au lieu de cela, nous appelons à la responsabilité. Responsabilité, non seulement dans les
Tropiques, mais également dans le Nord global, pour arrêter et inverser la déforestation et de la
dégradation des forêts d’ici à 2030. Responsabilité envers les principes d’équité de préférence
aux impulsions protectionnistes. Responsabilité envers l’intégrité scientifique et les droits des
peuples autochtones et des communautés locales. Responsabilité envers les générations
présentes et futures de préférence aux intérêts à court terme et aux industries qui prétendent
incarner l’innovation, mais qui freinent plutôt le développement d’économies durables.
Dans six ans, la Journée internationale des forêts devra être une célébration, ce que l’unité
internationale n’a pas su accomplir. Cela ne pourra se produire qu’avec un sens partagé et
équitable des responsabilités et un engagement envers un véritable progrès mondial.
Avec la responsabilité, l’innovation suivra.
