Slides from the presentation at Balisage 2019 for the paper, "An Adventure with Client-Side XSLT to an Architecture for Building Bridges with Javascript." Abstract: "This paper describes the development process we undertook to extend the capabilities of an XML-based authoring and publishing system. Originally designed to deliver content for print and the web, we transformed it into one that delivers fully interactive web-based wizards whose steps are generated automatically based on logic encoded into the source documents. To meet our requirements for the application, we rejected conventional top-down XML or JavaScript frameworks and instead sought to unite JavaScript and XSLT to leverage the strengths of each. Despite being underutilized as a client-side technology, XSLT is still a valuable tool in the development of modern web applications. Its expressive nature, continuing support in browsers, and ability to integrate with a modern virtual DOM-based user interface framework allowed us to build a complex legal forms application that was simpler and more productive than more conventional approaches. Our application demonstrates opportunities for symbiosis with client-side XSLT that has potential beyond legal forms and for an architecture with implications beyond XSLT."

Dynamically Testing Individual Microservice Releases In Production
A lot of us test new versions of services in our Production environment, since it’s the best way to get representative, reliable results. If the new service is “on the edge” of the topology then hitting it is easy, as the test clients can directly call it. But if it’s in the middle of a chain of services, then calling the current versions of all of them, except one beta version in the middle of the chain, is the dream.
This kind of advanced traffic control is possible with a Service Mesh like Istio. But the configuration needed to enable this for all versions of all services is complex and error-prone. In this session Matt will show you how to use an Operator which auto-generates the necessary config. We’ll see how just deploying a new version results in all the necessary config for sophisticated “override-based testing”. Matt will walk through the technique, the underlying config, and the operator that generates it from Deployments.
Evolving Mobile Architectures

JAVA EVERYWHERE AGAIN—WITH DUKESCRIPT
For a long time, Java was perfect for creating cross-platform applications, but the advent of iPhone, iPad, and Android devices changed everything, resulting in a totally fragmented world. Catering to all these platform is troublesome and expensive. That’s why DukeScript was created: to make it easy to create cross-platform Java applications again. The goal of this hands-on lab is to create a cross-platform application from scratch that will run on iOS, Android, desktop, browser, and embedded devices such as the Raspberry Pi. You’ll learn about the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) architecture, which enables you to write and test business code totally independently of the view, and, finally, you’ll see it combined with a view to complete a working application.

- perform the Maven repository initialization by creating the archetype and building it as

# Testing at scale
Genuine CI/CD can’t be accomplished without continous testing. At organizations like Walmart, where about 50k deployments happen every day, we need a robust and scalable test infrastructure to execute these tests.
## Concord
We use Concord (http://concord.walmartlabs.com/) for deployments.It is an orchestration engine that connects different systems together using scenarios and plugins.
## Testing challenges
The teams at Walmart excel at automated testing and with about 1M of CI jobs running 24X7 (many of them run end-to-end tests for an hour or two), we’re at risk of hoarding the resources on our CI/CD servers. We needed a flexible and scalable solution which can meet the needs of the teams who run long end-to-end tests.
## Solution
We created a Concord plugin which will allow the users to leverage the Kubernetes infrastructure to run their end-to-end tests. Users can submit their Docker image for tests to Concord. It spins up a container called `Orchestra` which in turn spins up the jobs and suspends the Concord process. Once the jobs complete, it resumes the Concord process and users can continue with their flow.

For a long time, Java was perfect for creating cross-platform applications, but the advent of iPhone, iPad, and Android devices changed everything, resulting in a totally fragmented world. Catering to all these platform is troublesome and expensive. That’s why DukeScript was created: to make it easy to create cross-platform Java applications again. The goal of this hands-on lab is to create a cross-platform application from scratch that will run on iOS, Android, desktop, browser, and embedded devices such as the Raspberry Pi. You’ll learn about the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) architecture, which enables you to write and test business code totally independently of the view, and, finally, you’ll see it combined with a view to complete a working application.
IMPORTANT
Before conference, please follow the steps to prepare for the session:
- perform the Maven repository initialization by creating the archetype and building it as
described at DukeScript website
- also download NetBeans IDE (either latest beta or at least 8.0.2)
- Installing Android SDK rev. 19 or bringing own Mac Book with XCode installed can be also found beneficial

# Testing at scale
Genuine CI/CD can’t be accomplished without continous testing. At organizations like Walmart, where about 50k deployments happen every day, we need a robust and scalable test infrastructure to execute these tests.
## Concord
We use Concord (http://concord.walmartlabs.com/) for deployments.It is an orchestration engine that connects different systems together using scenarios and plugins.
## Testing challenges
The teams at Walmart excel at automated testing and with about 1M of CI jobs running 24X7 (many of them run end-to-end tests for an hour or two), we’re at risk of hoarding the resources on our CI/CD servers. We needed a flexible and scalable solution which can meet the needs of the teams who run long end-to-end tests.
## Solution
We created a Concord plugin which will allow the users to leverage the Kubernetes infrastructure to run their end-to-end tests. Users can submit their Docker image for tests to Concord. It spins up a container called `Orchestra` which in turn spins up the jobs and suspends the Concord process. Once the jobs complete, it resumes the Concord process and users can continue with their flow.
