This document discusses strategies for success at work and in life based on the author Chandramouli Venkatesan's experience. Some key points:
- Time spent at work does not equal experience; one must actively work to convert time into experience through learning cycles, setting targets, measuring performance, reviewing results, and reflecting on lessons learned.
- Career growth results from real individual growth in skills and knowledge, not just environmental factors. Success in the second half of one's career requires a focus on developing others, managing impact, and preparation for higher levels.
- Focus on areas within your control or "circle of influence" to be more productive, rather than worrying about external concerns outside your control. Cho
Diversity refers to differences between people in aspects like gender, race, religion, and disabilities. Discrimination in the workplace based on these differences is illegal. Competency-based recruitment and selection focuses on evaluating candidates based on observable behaviors and traits needed for successful job performance. It uses job profiles and structured interviews to assess skills, knowledge, and suitability. Implementing this approach helped one organization reduce employee turnover from 60% to 15-20%. Benefits include providing a consistent hiring process, predicting future performance, giving candidates clear feedback, and lowering turnover. Competencies can favor diversity and recognize transferable skills. The process involves identifying resources, creating panels of top performers, focusing interviews, developing competency-based questions, and following up with fairness.
An expatriate is a person who resides in a country other than their native country, either temporarily or permanently. Expatriates include professionals, skilled workers, and artists sent abroad by employers for positions where they typically earn more than local employees. While the term is often used to refer to those sent abroad for work, it can also include retirees and others who have chosen to live outside their home country. Expatriate failure is defined as an unplanned early return and can negatively impact companies through monetary costs, damage to reputation in the host country, and personal costs to the expatriate. Common causes of failure include culture shock, family stress, poor candidate selection, and climate issues.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Microservice Teams - How the cloud changes the way we workSven Peters
A lot of technical challenges and complexity come with building a cloud-native and distributed architecture. The way we develop backend software has fundamentally changed in the last ten years. Managing a microservices architecture demands a lot of us to ensure observability and operational resiliency. But did you also change the way you run your development teams?
Sven will talk about Atlassian’s journey from a monolith to a multi-tenanted architecture and how it affected the way the engineering teams work. You will learn how we shifted to service ownership, moved to more autonomous teams (and its challenges), and established platform and enablement teams.
