Progressive Era Dbq
The Effectiveness of Great Progressive Era Reformers Past history shows the build up to the
Progressive Era from 1900 1920 Huge advance during the Industrial Revolution happened right before
the Progressive Era. Railroads, mass production, and lot of workers grew and developed the United
States during the time period. Monopolies former creating total control to business owners and quality
of working conditions decreased. The Progressive Era started when Theodore Roosevelt became
President. Up til 1920, many political, economic, and social changes had been made. Reforms
sometimes negatively making the country take a step backwards. However reformers benefited society
economically, politically, and socially. Therefore, the effectiveness of Progressive Era reformers were
high. The United States was positively impacted economically from the Progressive Era. Roosevelt
exposed bad trusts allowing the country to not be damaged from the sneaky trusts. He put a restraint

Summary Of Cesare Lombroso s Atavistic Criminal
In his essay, Stephen D. Arata uses Cesare Lombroso s atavistic criminal as a starting point for his
analysis of Edward Hyde. According to Lombroso s model, criminals are born not made, and can be
identified by their physical deformities such as, enormous jaws, high cheek bones, and prominent
superciliary arches. (233) They are throwbacks to man s savage past, to use Arata s words. (233) He
that, when the novel was published, many readers saw the markers of the Lombrosan criminal born
out in the physical description of Hyde; his being referred by Utterson as as troglodytic being the most
clear cut example. (240) Arata then ties the atavist description of Hyde in to the class discourse of the
period, noting how it was customary for the lower classes to be associated with atavism and physical
deformities. However, Arata believes that due to Hyde s proclivities particularly those pertaining to
vice he is meant to caricature the bourgeois rather than the proletariat. His depravities, Arata believes,
adhere those of the Lombrosan criminal, viz. an inclination for excessive idleness, love of orgies, and
an irresponsible craving of evil. (235) Such vices are not those of the destitute working class but of a
monied gentlemen , he argues, which would make him, a companion of Jean Floressas des Esseintes
and Dorian Gray, not Vilella. (235) He then references Max Nordau, who, in his book Degeneration
(1895), argued that the degenerate population consists chiefly of rich

How Is Offred And The Commander
Offred and the Commander The Commander represents the Government and the System in the novel.
The most effective way in which the novel brought out gender bias was Offred s narration of how the
Gilead society claims her body as property of the Government s. She clearly states that she is part of a
collectively owned resource, We are containers, it s only the insides of our bodies that are important.
The outside can become hard and wrinkled for all they care, like the shell of a nut. (Atwood 150).
Handmaids are no more than vessels, no more than passageways that facilitate the existence of a baby
and Offred s empty womb is being watched by the government. It is the central object which is more
real than her. Yet Offred realized the powerlessness of the Commander as a part of the system. He
does not have the ability He wouldn t be able to intervene, to save me; the transgressions of women in
the household, whether Martha or Handmaid, are supposed to be under the jurisdiction of the Wives
alone. (Atwood 162) This also allows the readers a glimpse into the power and infiltration of Mayday
against the Eyes . The readers are able to see the powerlessness and the inefficiency of the State
though the Commander s impotence and restriction placed on him by the State itself. Offred s hope
relies on her body, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A flash of bared teeth, what in the hell does he think he s doing? Nobody else has seen him. I hope.
Was he invading? Was he in my room? (Atwood 49) This coercive power could be a result of Offred s
initial rejection to the Commander s wishes which could result in disaster for her. Even though the
Commander does not maintain a constant relationship with his own wife, Serena Joy considers him
the only thing she has. She exercises a certain power over

British Influence On Canada
In the 19th century, Britain dominated the seas in a manner unrivaled by any other competitor. The
Royal Navy was able to impose its will worldwide, exemplified by 19th century conflicts such as
Opium Wars versus China and The Anglo Egpytian war. During this time, Britain policed the world
and ensured safety on the high seas during a prosperous period known as Pax Brittanica. No other
nation was seriously able to present a naval challenge to the British Empire. This British golden age
was drawing to a close however, as American, French, Russian, Italian, Japanese, and especially
German navies grew increasingly more powerful. Due to the vast expanse of the British Empire, the
Royal navy found itself spread dangerously thin, or facing financial ... Show more content on

Thus, war with any other power would mean Canada s vital merchant shipping to the British Isles and
elsewhere would be a potential target. Nevertheless, even this plausible threat was largely dismissed in
Canadian politics. Ex Prime Minister J. A. MacDonald espoused the opinion widely held among
Canadian politicians at the time, stating that he did not fear even cruiser raids by countries involved in
any foreseeable European war. He quickly dismissed the suggestions that Canada might none the less
help with the increasing burden of imperial defence... any permanent commitment of that kind would
arouse isolationist sentiments among his electorate. 9 From this excerpt, it can be clearly seen that
Canadian politics had smothered the creation of the naval service as apathy was the politically safe
choice. The government had been fully willing to leave the coast undefended, and shipping hapless at
the hands of raiders. Although MacDonald had made the statement some fifteen years prior, the
political position had shifted little by 1905. When the dialogue on forming an indigenous naval service
opened under the Laurier government, Micheal Hadley states that the British garrison lay nearly a
thousand miles from Ottawa. In the consciousness of Canadian leaders it was even more remote than
that. However glad they might be

Emerald Necklace Case Study
The Atlanta Beltline Emerald Necklace project, prepared by, Alex Garvin and Associates Inc., ties
together proposed and existing trails along the 23 mile long Beltline Trail in Atlanta, Georgia. This
project will provide every resident of the city with jogging, rollerblading, and cycling opportunities.
This project will also include the conservation of land for future generations by transforming current
space into parks. Moreover, by tying together 46 neighborhoods with each other and three new
MARTA stations, the 20 mile long Beltline Transit system will provide access to every major
destination in Atlanta which will include the acres that make up the Beltline Emerald Necklace (Alex

To maintain the operation and maintenance of parks and trails there is a need to implement a financing
mechanism to address costs. Since the Beltline is a multi use trail, revenue can be received from
easements, leaseholds, purchases, contractual agreements and land swaps (Alex Garvin Associates,
Inc., 2004). More specifically, a proven effective alternative mechanisms to finance park operations
includes lease payments, fees, real estate taxes, sales tax, and Community Improvement Districts
(CIDs) (Alex Garvin Associates, Inc., 2004). Currently, Atlanta has nine CIDs (Alex Garvin
Associates, Inc., 2004). Fees are a source of revenue that could be levied on the operation of
concessions such as festivals, snack bars and newsstands.
In conclusion, the BeltLine Emerald Necklace is a project that is sustainably good for the environment
and the bottom line. The payback period for the investment on this project includes the initial
investment up till the TAD and ARC s funding becomes available. Moreover, this investment is not
only sustainable for the environment but also the community. It would also be good for business by
adding more train stops and accessibility to a greater population in Atlanta. Furthermore, this project
did not include a specific cost benefit

Zika Virus Papers
The Zika Virus When people think of the word epidemic , they generally imagine a widespread
disease that threatens humanity as a whole. While most of the hysteria associated with pandemics
stem purely from fiction, it can be understandable why people always fear the worst. That is why
when an outbreak of the Zika Virus was reported in the United States, an overall feeling of malaise set
in. As of September 21, 2016, a total of 3,358 cases of the Zika Virus have been reported ( Center for
Disease Control and Prevention ). Though the numbers are alarming, there is no need for a national
quarantine or emergency evacuation. In reality, the Zika Virus is not as intimidating as society puts it

As of now, there is no official vaccine for Zika. Instead, a patient that has the contagion must undergo
certain treatments. Fortunately, the remedies for the virus are simple and cheap. If infection occurs, it
is vital to get an abundance of rest and liquids; medication is also advised to assist in alleviating pain.
The treatments for Zika are straightforward because the disease itself is rather mild. In fact, in most
reported cases of the virus in the United States, the illness only lasted approximately two to seven
days prior to the first set of symptoms ( World Health Organization ). It is evident that the fear
associated with the Zika Virus is slightly exaggerated. Currently, there is only one recorded fatality in
the United States that is directly related to Zika ( The Washington Post ). This is mainly because first
world countries medical programs are advanced enough to effectively treat the virus. The standard of
living in these countries are also higher compared to third world countries. That is why Zika has
claimed a significant amount of lives worldwide; the poor conditions in these countries make it
difficult for infected individuals to get proper

Lowe s History
The first Lowe s store, Lowe s North Wilkesboro Hardware, was first opened in North Wilkesboro,
North Carolina in 1921 by Lucius Smith Lowe (1879 1940).[7][8][9] After Lowe died in 1940, the
business was inherited by his daughter Ruth, who sold the company to her brother Jim that same year.
Jim took on Carl Buchan as a partner in 1943.[10]
Buchan anticipated the dramatic increase in construction after World War II, and under his
management, the store focused on hardware and building materials.[11] Before then, the product mix
had also included notions, dry goods, horse tack, snuff, produce, and groceries. The company bought a
second location in Sparta, North Carolina in 1949.
Lowe and Buchan differed on expanding the company to new areas and they split in 1952 with ...

For a while, Lowe s resisted adopting the mega store format partly because its management believed
the smaller towns where Lowe s mostly operated would not even support huge stores. However, Lowe
s eventually had to adopt the big box format in order to survive. Today, most Lowe s stores are part of
the big box variety, although some classic format stores remain in smaller markets.
Lowe s has since grown nationally, as it was aided by the purchase of the Renton, Washington based
Eagle Hardware Garden company in 1999.[15] It is now the largest home improvement store chain in
North America and has begun expanding outside the United States, starting with the Southern Ontario
area. The first store outside of United States was in Hamilton, Ontario,

College Tuition Should Be Regulated
As a freshman college student I believe that college tuition is much higher compared to what it used to
be. One reason why it continues to increase is mainly because of the significant amount of loans that
are borrowed by college students but are not getting paid back; however, does anyone ever wonder
where does the money that is put into colleges go to? College professors are not the reason that
college cost so much; in addition to, the money also goes towards sport teams, scholarships, and
construction work in order to expand the campuses (Carey). Tuition at Stanford University in 1980 81
was $6,285. Thirty years later, Stanford s tuition had risen to $38,700. Tuition in 2011 12 is $40,050,
Goodman stated. With that being said college tuition should be regulated because it would be more
affordable, students would not feel as pressured, and the country s debt will slowly began to decrease.
Although college tuition at the University of South Alabama is much cheaper than Stanford University
it is still expensive to an average middle class family. College tuition should be regulated because it
would be more affordable for students that are fresh out of high school. Tuition at the University of
South Alabama for 2015 2016 is estimated to $9,240 but it could be either higher or lower for students
in a specific major. Tuition for USA in 1987 for in state students was $1,581 and for out of state
students it was $2,181. Twenty three years later in 2010 tuition rose up to $5,962

Bullies Behind Bars Research Paper
Bullying is a very serious problem. About 1/10 teenagers drop out of school because of being bullied.
Victims of bullies tend to become depressed and many others have even taken their own lives away.
Overall bullying has really ruined and hurt many people and it needs to be recognized. The issue of
bullying hasn t been exaggerated at all. Additionally, all the attention and awareness that has been
spread about bullying is completely appropriate.
According to the article Bullies behind bars? , Carmen Morais states Nearly 30 percent of all teens

Folk Religions And Protestantism
From polytheism to idol worship, there are countless differences between folk religions and
Protestantism. Some folk religions abandon organized services and belief in a god altogether. Some
lean towards magic and occultism; it is near impossible to draw parallels to Christianity. However,
through understanding and being respectful of its adherents, Christians can effectively witness to
followers of folk religions. According to Carlos Martin, many followers of folk religions have not yet
heard of the gospel. It is the duty of Christian witnesses to spread the gospel to these people. This
paper will explore various folk religions from origins to present, and the methods Christians can use to
witness to them (19).

Mt. St. Helen
On May 18, 1980, 35 years prior to today, a quake struck underneath the north face of Mount St.
Helens in Washington state, setting off the greatest avalanche in written history and a significant
volcanic emission that dispersed powder over twelve states. The sudden horizontal impact, heard
many miles away, removed 1,300 feet off the highest point of the volcano, sending shockwaves and
pyroclastic streams over the encompassing scene, leveling backwoods, softening snow and ice, and
creating monstrous mudflows. Fifty seven individuals lost their lives in the tragedy (Grisham).
Mt. St. Helen s was arguably a frontrunner amongst the most beautiful stratovolcanoes in the Cascade
Range before its historic eruption on that fateful day in history. The emission formed a huge sidelong
impact that crushed the northern flank of the fountain of liquid magma, straightening a great many
adult Douglas fir trees over a fan molded zone of 600 square kilometers. The impact zone was further
exposed to a gigantic flotsam and jetsam torrential slide, trailed by the evidence of various lahars and
pyroclastic streams. The major physiographic historic points on the guide incorporate the westbound
depleting North and South Forks of the Toutle River, Spirit Lake, and Johnston Ridge. Soul Lake is
found 5 kilometers from the summit, as is Johnston Ridge, instantly toward the west of Spirit Lake.

Foreshadowing In The Lottery
The short story The Lottery was written in 1948 by Shirley Jackson. It was first published in a popular
magazine, The New Yorker (Kirszner Mandell 419). The story starts out on a pleasant summer day but
has a much darker ending. This instantly caused mass confusion and anger by most of the magazine s
readers. Some readers even canceled their subscription to the magazine. Although the readers
demanded answers, Jackson refused to give any explanation of the story. The best explanation was
from a literary editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, who was also confused by the story. Jackson
explained that the story was written to shock the readers by dramatizing the pointless violence and
inhumanity in their own lives (The New Yorker). This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When something is a tradition, it is less likely to be challenged as people have grown accustomed to it.
No one in the story has moved to end it because the majority of the people in town swear by the

Assimilation In Mike Resnick s Kirinyaga
A common story told in history is one society having a technological advantage over another society,
and imposing their will either through conquest or assimilation. In Mike Resnick s novel Kirinyaga,
the topic of European colonial assimilation is explored through a tale of a group of Kikuyu settlers on
a new planet named Kirinyaga. The people of Kirinyaga experience the assimilation in three ways
through direct control, cultural examples, and technological temptation.
The people of Kirinyaga are only allowed to live on the planet, thanks to the charter established by
Earth governments. This allows the Earth government to exercise a certain level of control over the
inhabitants. Although they do not directly have the ability to shape the ... Show more content on

so he teaches him about the computer system. Upon being exposed to this, the boy begins to expose
the stories to the village, making them distrust Korbia. This reaches its breaking point when a doctor
arrives from Earth to treat an injured maintenance pilot. Her medicine is able to relive many of the
maladies that Korbia could not cure. This leads to more and more of the villagers going to maintence
for supplies, and care. In all this destroys the traditional culture of the Kikuyu and leads to Kirinyaga

and the growth of urban centers in the 21st century.
Africa is a different continent thanks to colonization, mostly thanks to shifts in culture caused by the

Gangs Of New York Film Analysis
1) Immigration (Irish) Potatoe s were a staple in the Irish diet but in the 1840 s the potato crops were
mysteriously rotting and dying. This spread all across the fields of Ireland causing a famine. The
famine lasted for about six years and killed over a million men, women, and children in Ireland. It also
caused many of the Irish to immigrate to America to survive. The film Gangs of New York takes place
at the five points in lower Manhattan. The Nativists who believed that they were the true native
americans controlled the five points and are ruled by the character Bill Cutting. Cutting was marked as

for a job. The natives would not allow the immigrants to work for them. The natives called immigrants
many different names and told them to go back where they came from while throwing things at them
as they were unloading off of ships. Bill Cutting held a celebration every year to remember the day he

advertisement is effective and interesting in many different aspects, including form, content and style.
The form of this advertisement reflects the artists intentions of making the product, Heinz ketchup,
seem healthier. The lines throughout are very clean and crisp which gives an air of freshness about the
piece. The implied shape of the ketchup bottle through stacked tomato slices is an innovative way for

Repatriation For Refugees From The United States
The options for resettlement for refugees are to return to their home country when there s peace, if
their country remains unstable or dangerous due to persecution and unable to return they are able to
stay in a refugee settlement in another country. Unfortunately, most host countries are unable to accept
refugees permanently. The United States generally only offer to refugees if their fleeing from
persecution and war. The U.S. government maintains a long established humanitarian program that
grants a limited number of refugees who are unable to return home or stay in a host country. Very little
of the refugees who have the opportunity of resettlement, there are three internationally accepted
solutions for refugees: Voluntary repatriation Refugees return to their country of nationality when
conditions have changed that allows them to return safety. Local integration Local settlement and
integration of refugees in their country of first asylum upon receiving agreement from the host
country. Resettlement Most frequently used for refugees whose life, safety, health or human rights are
at risk in their country where they have required refuge. When refugees come to the United State they
must rebuild their lives from disturbing and heartbreaking conditions. Majority of the refugees newly

the sex scene in the Sept became the rape scene in the sept. That s why, despite hundreds of pages of
painstaking character development that make it entirely illogical for that to happen, they wrote it that
way for television.
Because on the King s Road with Brienne, Jaime was beginning to get in touch with the boy knight
still inside himself, the one who still believed in the words he said. Her honor made him want to be
more honorable too. But now he s back in King s Landing, outside of Brienne s sphere of good
influence and back in Cersei s corrupting one. Instead of welcoming Jaime home with open legs, D D
s Cersei is standoffish and unresponsive.
He stands in the previous episode, pathetically pleading for a modicum of her affection, but she spurns
him, telling him he s too late, that things have changed. D D s Cersei cares not a whit for Jaime,
though he has devoted his whole life to her, has allowed her to mold him into the man who stands
before her. And what better way to show how corrupting she is, than to have that love turned against
her?

Native American Native Land
To be a Native American, one is not just born into the ethnicity, but it is the sacredness of the culture,
language, religion, and land that makes a person a true Native American, and without these things,
there are no Indigenous people. Developing a culture is human nature, and for Native Americans, their
culture revolves around the land, and to take that away is to take away who they are. The land may not
physically be a part of Native Americans, but without their sacred land, there is a missing part of them.
The building of telescopes on Mt. Graham is one example of how the sacred Native land is being
taken over. Just like how a wheel is a part of a chariot, the sacred land is part of a Native American,
and without it, Native Americans are not whole. Their culture is seen as inferior to white culture
because of the Racial Contract, and is why their land is treated with disrespect. Native Americans
sacred lands needs to be treated with respect and protected because without it, they are no longer
Native Americans, they are a group of people without a culture to be a part of. The word sacred is
defined as: considered to be holy and deserving respect, especially because of a connection with a
god; connection with religion; considered too important to be changed (Cambridge Dictionary). But
what is sacred to someone, can that really be defined? What may be sacred and important to one
person may mean nothing to another, but that does not mean that others should be able to

Superior Anterior Posterior Lesion Case Study
Superior Anterior Posterior lesions (SLAP) of the labrum is a condition which can be considered to be
spread in the male population between the ages 20 to 50. Furthermore, as mentioned by Zhang et al. it
has been reported more than 4000 cases in a year. Additionally, based on medical reports, surgeons are
reporting more surgeries of this type of injury every year. Moreover, it the fastest growing procedure
considering all other surgeries in the outpatient setting. The lesion can be considered of a complex and
comprehensive etiology. Most of the time, the mechanism of injury has been reported to be an extreme
and repetitive movement of the shoulder, also maximum loading on the bicep in an eccentric position.

The purpose of physical therapy intervention is to return patients to full functional abilities by
addressing impairments. In many cases, the pathology of the impairments or lesion requires surgical
procedures. Although non invasive interventions as physical therapy should be considered initially. As
mentioned Shin et al. there are protocols previously studied and published that has shown success
instead of surgical interventions. Furthermore, these general guidelines provide the foundation to
avoid tissue disruption, respecting the healing time frame of the tissue. Additionally, they implement a
passive range of motion (PROM) to prevent contractures and maintain the range of motion. Finally,
they focus on strength as it has no time constraint. As mentioned by Wilk and Leonard4 it has been
found most shoulder lesions can be rehabilitated conservative without requiring operation.4
Furthermore, it can be speculated that rehabilitation after a required surgery is critical to return the
patients to their functional goals. Additionally, a concrete designed rehabilitation program to increase
the range of motion, strength, endurance while increasing the stability of the shoulder is a determinant
factor as seen in athletes.4 As mentioned by Dodson and Altchek5 they proposed a conservative
guideline. Based on their guidelines there are 6 stages in the recovery process. On the

How The Supply Chain Has Evolved Over The Years
The supply chain has evolved over the years. With new businesses that are on the rise in the
competitive world it is important to stay on top. Different merchants create better deals that cause
relationships between the suppliers and their customers to the end. I wanted to explore those
relationships and research the history of the supply chain . I wanted to know how things were ran and
how they are able to sustain business when the economy changes.
How supply chain management has evolved In the 1940s and 1950s, the focus of logistics research
was on how to use mechanization (e.g., pallets and pallet lifts) to improve the very labor intensive
processes of material handling and how to take better advantage of space using racking and better
warehouse design and layout. The unit load concept gained popularity and the use of pallets became
widespread. In the mid 1950s, this concept was extended to transportation management with the
development of inter modal containers together with ships, trains, and trucks to handle these
containers. By the 1960s, a clear trend had developed in shifting more time dependent freight
transportation to truck rather than rail. This led to the need for joint consideration of warehousing,
material handling, and freight transportation, which emerged under the label of Physical Distribution.
Since the 1980s, computer technology has advanced at such a phenomenal rate that it is currently far
ahead of the ability of the supply and logistics field

Replace Air Filter
If you own a car, it s your responsibility to take good care of it. In order to keep it running at a peak
level, you can take these steps.
Replace the Air Filter
In order to keep your engine working great for as long as possible, the air filter needs to be clean.
First, open up the hood of your car, and locate the air filter housing unit. This will be near your vehicle
s engine. Open this unit, and then take out the air filter.
If the filter is completely covered in dirt and dust, you will need to replace it with a new one. Make
sure to look on the side of the old filter, so you can see what dimensions you need for the new one.
You might consider installing a reusable air filter in your vehicle, so that you can simply clean the

Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
Shirley Jackson s The Lottery is an excellent example of an allegorical short story. In this story, the
reader learns of a town s lottery that takes place once a year, every year. It has been a tradition in this
small rural town for many years and the villagers never question these activities, they just blindly go
along with it. But what the reader doesn t know is just what kind of prize the winner is going to obtain.
Jackson s use of symbolism is shown through the description of the characters, significant objects, and
the actions in the story. These elements are used to represent the death that is associated with the
lottery.
The first allegorical use is seen through the description ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of the blackness makes the reader think of death and evil. The family which draws the black dot on
the paper is the family marked for death. The slips of paper are held in a black box which signifies the
horrible outcome. Everything that is terrible and evil is shown through the color black. If someone
gets the color black, then they are going to die. It s Hutchinson. It s Bill. (236) Everyone in the village
knows what s to come for the Hutchinson family.
The actions involved with the lottery are symbolic also. At the beginning of the story the reader learns
that the children are gathering stones into a big pile. This represents just how unconscious their actions
are. The village is blind to it s own motives. Tessie was fine with the lottery until it was she who was
the chosen one. Tessie becomes the scapegoat for the village. She is a symbol of disobedience and the
other villagers must stone her to death to stop further outbreaks of rebellion against the lottery. They
are unable to articulate their rebellion because the massive force of ideology stands in their way.
Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to
use stones. (238) The tradition is so old that all they care about is stoning the victim without thinking
about how evil the tradition really is.
The Lottery is very allegorical in every sense. After reading this short

A Research Project On Project Management
Project Management project methodology is an entirely characterized blend of consistently related
practices, strategies and procedures that decide how best to arrange, create, control and convey an
undertaking all through the constant execution process until effective consummation and end. It is a
scientifically proven, methodical and restrained way to deal with project design, execution and
fulfillment. Agile methodology is for a task that needs great deftness in necessities. The key
components of Agile are its short termed conveyance cycles (sprints), Agile necessities, dynamic
group society, less prohibitive task control and concentrate on real time communication. Iterative
methodology is a method for separating the product improvement of a substantial application into
little chunks. In iterative improvement, feature code is composed, created and tested in many different
cycles. With every cycle, extra components can be planned, created and tested until there is a
completely practical programming application prepared to be sent to clients. Waterfall methodology is
the one that is the most utilized over all businesses, and it is exceptionally basic in programming
advancement and development. There are numerous variants of the waterfall technique, yet the
original one included these high level stages: Requirements specification, Design, Construction (AKA
or coding), Integration, Testing and debugging (AKA Validation), Installation, and Maintenance. Agile

Comparing the Secular Humanist, Machiavelli and the Religious Humanist, Erasmus
One can often identify a person s political, religious or cultural orientation by his or her reaction to
certain words. A case in point is the expression secular humanism. For religious conservatives those
words sum up much of what is wrong with contemporary society.
Webster s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary gives several definitions for humanism, a word which
made its appearance in 1832. The first is a devotion to the humanities or the revival of class,
individualistic and critical spirit, and emphasis on secular concerns characteristic of the Renaissance.
Renaissance is capitalized. Another definition reads as follows: a doctrine, attitude, or ... Show more

Because it is difficult to reach agreement on values, why we exist or what we should do, Western
society has concentrated on the how of life. If you can t answer a hard question, ask an easier one. For
example, we may not be able to describe love, but we have made enormous progress on the
description of the physical manifestations of sexual arousal. I am reminded of a character in
Ambiguous Adventure, a French African novel, who is advising her brother to send his child to a
Western school. She tells him, We must learn from the West the art of conquering without being in the
right. By that statement she recognizes the divorce between power and morality.
When you read the short excerpts from Machiavelli s The Prince from our text I hope that he made
you feel angry and defensive. Reading Machiavelli makes me bristle; I want to argue with him. His
formulas for political success contradict my most basic religious beliefs, those I have held from
childhood, and help me to see why Mennonites have traditionally been so suspicious of politics. And
yet I know that his pragmatic approach is the very basis of modern political theory. Because we have,
as citizens of the twentieth century, to a large extent followed his advice, I am put on the defensive. I
am astonished to see how

Anesthesia Paper
The Study of Anesthesia: History, Chemistry, and Activity By Cordell Jones The Description of
Anesthesia, It s Effects, its Careers, and it s Future By Cordell Jones Introduction In 1591, a young
mother was dragged from her home and taken away. Her mercy pleas were ignored, and she was
thrown intro a pit and buried alive. What was this mother s crime? She had given birth to twin sons,
and during her labor she had asked for some pain relief. The Church regarded the pain of childbirth as
a punishment justly inflicted by God. The ultimate intent of her persecution was to discourage other
women from making the same decision. You can tell today s society is less diluted by medicine and

in 1990. Third, sodium pentothal was founded in the early 1930s by Ernest H. Volwiler and Donalee

Ralph M. Walters in a study of its properties. Three months later, Dr. John S. Lundy started a clinical
trial of thiopental at the mayo Clinic at request of Abbott. (Wikipedia, 2010) Fourth, halothane was
first synthesized by C. W. Suckling of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1951 and was first used
by M. Johnstone in Manchester in 1956. Halothane became popular as a nonflammable general
anesthetic replacing other volatile anesthetics such as diethyl ether and cyclopropane. (Wikipedia,
2010) Halothane is no longer used in the U.S. because of its problems, such as it took it a long time to
put a patient asleep and then longer to wake the patient back up. Plus if the patient is put under for a
longer amount of time during a operation more gas will build up in the fats and then later go up to the
brain. (Kervin, 2010) Fifth, lidocaine, the first amino amide type local anesthetic of its time, was first
synthesized under the name Xylocaine by Swedish chemist Niles Löfgren in 1943. Bengt Lundqvist
performed the first injection experiment on himself. It was first marketed in 1949. (Wikipedia, 2010)

Sara Hardin s Teaching Students With Learning Disabilities
In our daily lives, while interacting with others, there is a continual integration of the four skills.
Interaction in the classroom setting is not different in this sense, as we will find that in our lessons,
reading, writing, listening and speaking are inevitably interrelated, supporting each other. The fact that
the four skills have been divided, so as to understand the processes involved in the mastery of each of
them, does not mean that they do not coexist. For example, a written prompt for discussion involves
not only reading and speaking, but also listening to appropriately respond to what has been said. Also,
after discussion the prompt a written activity can be set.
Emphasizing one skill over the other does not imply that we are segregating the integrated skills
approach. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By providing clear insights into the nature of learning disabilities and how they can be addressed by
educators, readers can have a better picture of how learning can be enhanced for those students.
To begin with, the author refers to the biological factors implied in the development of LDs, providing
some background knowledge about how the brain works in such cases. Basically, learning disabilities
are the result of neurological disorders that affect the brain s capacity to receive, integrate, store and
retrieve information. Research has shown that the capacity to effectively perform the above mentioned
functions is the result of less efficient information processing pathway. As a result, the brain has to
find other neurological connections that enable it to fulfil the task, slowing the entire process. Both
elements; the inability to process, retain and reuse information as well as the faulty brain wiring are
the key factors that have to be present in order to diagnose a student with a learning

High Achieving Student Growth Target
1. Principal Frank felt strongly that ranking a school higher solely for achieving the student growth
target over a school that actually met the AYP achievement targets was inequitable and misleading. Do
you agree or disagree with Principal Frank s perspective? In this scenario, I feel Principal Frank
frustration is justifiable due to the recent changes made to the school ranking system. Within the text it
indicated that Principal Frank had worked for seven years with his staff to implement best practices in
order to meet AYP (Shapiro Gross, 2013). This hard work prompted the school to be ranked in the
25th percentile within the district, and due to it s high achieving reputation required a special
admissions lottery (Shapiro ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3. Principal Frank questions the efficacy of the NCLB accountability system. Compare and contrast
the use of AYP ratings compared with individual student growth rankings. Which might be the best
way to go in terms of the students, parents, and the community?
AYP requires that students levels of reading and math proficiency are tested in grades through 8 and in
one grade in high school (Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, 2011, p.1). Results are then
compared to prior performance levels, and state determined AYP standards, to determine if the school
has met AYP (Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, 2011).
In order to achieve AYP, 95% of students must participate in testing, and 95% must reach minimum
annual targets (Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, 2011). In addition, 95% of students in
subgroups for disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, ELL, and ethnic groups must meet
the measurable annual objectives. In contrast, individual student growth rankings do not employ
specific benchmarks to establish a school s performance. If Superintendent Hart is employing a simple
growth model each students scores will be compared to the previous years. The downside of this is if a
student did not take the test they will not be aggregated into the schools growth calculation. I do not
feel this case student clearly explained how poverty levels are being

The Optimist s Daughter Literary Criticism
The Optimist s Daughter The Optimist s daughter is seen as a reflective and moving novel about love,
suspense, and isolation ( Eudora Welty 2).Welty has a gentle power to grasp the impression of country,
and uses it to get the attention of the readers by inferring (Bloom, Modern Critical views 93). Eudora
Welty describes themes such as making peace with the past and memories to help cope with the deaths
of her husband, mother, and now her loving father. One of America s most admired authors, Eudora
Welty, was born in Jackson, Mississippi. She used love and guilt to write in familiar terms of family,
place, and vision (Johnson 115). Welty was educated at Central High school and attended Mississippi
State College in Columbia, where she studied advertisement; Later transferring to the University of
Wisconsin, she received her Bachelor in Arts. Welty received a Pulitzer Prize for The Optimist s

As of now, Mr. Romer has been working in the Gulf of Mexico altogether for 34 years, since 1982. At

  • 4. Summary Of Cesare Lombroso s Atavistic Criminal In his essay, Stephen D. Arata uses Cesare Lombroso s atavistic criminal as a starting point for his analysis of Edward Hyde. According to Lombroso s model, criminals are born not made, and can be identified by their physical deformities such as, enormous jaws, high cheek bones, and prominent superciliary arches. (233) They are throwbacks to man s savage past, to use Arata s words. (233) He that, when the novel was published, many readers saw the markers of the Lombrosan criminal born out in the physical description of Hyde; his being referred by Utterson as as troglodytic being the most clear cut example. (240) Arata then ties the atavist description of Hyde in to the class discourse of the period, noting how it was customary for the lower classes to be associated with atavism and physical deformities. However, Arata believes that due to Hyde s proclivities particularly those pertaining to vice he is meant to caricature the bourgeois rather than the proletariat. His depravities, Arata believes, adhere those of the Lombrosan criminal, viz. an inclination for excessive idleness, love of orgies, and an irresponsible craving of evil. (235) Such vices are not those of the destitute working class but of a monied gentlemen , he argues, which would make him, a companion of Jean Floressas des Esseintes and Dorian Gray, not Vilella. (235) He then references Max Nordau, who, in his book Degeneration (1895), argued that the degenerate population consists chiefly of rich ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. How Is Offred And The Commander Offred and the Commander The Commander represents the Government and the System in the novel. The most effective way in which the novel brought out gender bias was Offred s narration of how the Gilead society claims her body as property of the Government s. She clearly states that she is part of a collectively owned resource, We are containers, it s only the insides of our bodies that are important. The outside can become hard and wrinkled for all they care, like the shell of a nut. (Atwood 150). Handmaids are no more than vessels, no more than passageways that facilitate the existence of a baby and Offred s empty womb is being watched by the government. It is the central object which is more real than her. Yet Offred realized the powerlessness of the Commander as a part of the system. He does not have the ability He wouldn t be able to intervene, to save me; the transgressions of women in the household, whether Martha or Handmaid, are supposed to be under the jurisdiction of the Wives alone. (Atwood 162) This also allows the readers a glimpse into the power and infiltration of Mayday against the Eyes . • 7. British Influence On Canada In the 19th century, Britain dominated the seas in a manner unrivaled by any other competitor. The Royal Navy was able to impose its will worldwide, exemplified by 19th century conflicts such as Opium Wars versus China and The Anglo Egpytian war. During this time, Britain policed the world and ensured safety on the high seas during a prosperous period known as Pax Brittanica. No other nation was seriously able to present a naval challenge to the British Empire. This British golden age was drawing to a close however, as American, French, Russian, Italian, Japanese, and especially German navies grew increasingly more powerful. Due to the vast expanse of the British Empire, the Royal navy found itself spread dangerously thin, or facing financial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, war with any other power would mean Canada s vital merchant shipping to the British Isles and elsewhere would be a potential target. Nevertheless, even this plausible threat was largely dismissed in Canadian politics. Ex Prime Minister J. A. MacDonald espoused the opinion widely held among Canadian politicians at the time, stating that he did not fear even cruiser raids by countries involved in any foreseeable European war. He quickly dismissed the suggestions that Canada might none the less help with the increasing burden of imperial defence... any permanent commitment of that kind would arouse isolationist sentiments among his electorate. 9 From this excerpt, it can be clearly seen that Canadian politics had smothered the creation of the naval service as apathy was the politically safe choice. The government had been fully willing to leave the coast undefended, and shipping hapless at the hands of raiders. Although MacDonald had made the statement some fifteen years prior, the political position had shifted little by 1905. When the dialogue on forming an indigenous naval service opened under the Laurier government, Micheal Hadley states that the British garrison lay nearly a thousand miles from Ottawa. In the consciousness of Canadian leaders it was even more remote than that. However glad they might be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While most of the hysteria associated with pandemics stem purely from fiction, it can be understandable why people always fear the worst. That is why when an outbreak of the Zika Virus was reported in the United States, an overall feeling of malaise set in. As of September 21, 2016, a total of 3,358 cases of the Zika Virus have been reported ( Center for Disease Control and Prevention ). Instead, a patient that has the contagion must undergo certain treatments. Fortunately, the remedies for the virus are simple and cheap. If infection occurs, it is vital to get an abundance of rest and liquids; medication is also advised to assist in alleviating pain. The treatments for Zika are straightforward because the disease itself is rather mild. In fact, in most reported cases of the virus in the United States, the illness only lasted approximately two to seven days prior to the first set of symptoms ( World Health Organization ). It is evident that the fear associated with the Zika Virus is slightly exaggerated. Currently, there is only one recorded fatality in the United States that is directly related to Zika ( The Washington Post ). This is mainly because first world countries medical programs are advanced enough to effectively treat the virus. The standard of living in these countries are also higher compared to third world countries. • 11. College Tuition Should Be Regulated As a freshman college student I believe that college tuition is much higher compared to what it used to be. One reason why it continues to increase is mainly because of the significant amount of loans that are borrowed by college students but are not getting paid back; however, does anyone ever wonder where does the money that is put into colleges go to? College professors are not the reason that college cost so much; in addition to, the money also goes towards sport teams, scholarships, and construction work in order to expand the campuses (Carey). Tuition at Stanford University in 1980 81 was $6,285. Thirty years later, Stanford s tuition had risen to $38,700. Tuition in 2011 12 is $40,050, Goodman stated. Native American Native Land To be a Native American, one is not just born into the ethnicity, but it is the sacredness of the culture, language, religion, and land that makes a person a true Native American, and without these things, there are no Indigenous people. Developing a culture is human nature, and for Native Americans, their culture revolves around the land, and to take that away is to take away who they are. The land may not physically be a part of Native Americans, but without their sacred land, there is a missing part of them. The building of telescopes on Mt. I wanted to explore those relationships and research the history of the supply chain . I wanted to know how things were ran and how they are able to sustain business when the economy changes. How supply chain management has evolved In the 1940s and 1950s, the focus of logistics research was on how to use mechanization (e.g., pallets and pallet lifts) to improve the very labor intensive processes of material handling and how to take better advantage of space using racking and better warehouse design and layout. The unit load concept gained popularity and the use of pallets became widespread. In the mid 1950s, this concept was extended to transportation management with the development of inter modal containers together with ships, trains, and trucks to handle these containers. By the 1960s, a clear trend had developed in shifting more time dependent freight transportation to truck rather than rail. This led to the need for joint consideration of warehousing, material handling, and freight transportation, which emerged under the label of Physical Distribution. It was first used in humans on March 8, 1934, by Dr. Ralph M. Walters in a study of its properties. Three months later, Dr. John S. Lundy started a clinical trial of thiopental at the mayo Clinic at request of Abbott. (Wikipedia, 2010) Fourth, halothane was first synthesized by C. W. Suckling of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1951 and was first used by M. Johnstone in Manchester in 1956. Halothane became popular as a nonflammable general anesthetic replacing other volatile anesthetics such as diethyl ether and cyclopropane. (Wikipedia, 2010) Halothane is no longer used in the U.S. because of its problems, such as it took it a long time to put a patient asleep and then longer to wake the patient back up. Plus if the patient is put under for a longer amount of time during a operation more gas will build up in the fats and then later go up to the brain. (Kervin, 2010) Fifth, lidocaine, the first amino amide type local anesthetic of its time, was first synthesized under the name Xylocaine by Swedish chemist Niles Löfgren in 1943. Bengt Lundqvist performed the first injection experiment on himself. It was first marketed in 1949. (Wikipedia, 2010) Lastly, benzocaine was fist synthesized in 1890 by German ... • 33. Sara Hardin s Teaching Students With Learning Disabilities In our daily lives, while interacting with others, there is a continual integration of the four skills. Interaction in the classroom setting is not different in this sense, as we will find that in our lessons, reading, writing, listening and speaking are inevitably interrelated, supporting each other. The fact that the four skills have been divided, so as to understand the processes involved in the mastery of each of them, does not mean that they do not coexist. For example, a written prompt for discussion involves not only reading and speaking, but also listening to appropriately respond to what has been said. Also, after discussion the prompt a written activity can be set. Emphasizing one skill over the other does not imply that we are segregating the integrated skills approach. ... By providing clear insights into the nature of learning disabilities and how they can be addressed by educators, readers can have a better picture of how learning can be enhanced for those students. To begin with, the author refers to the biological factors implied in the development of LDs, providing some background knowledge about how the brain works in such cases. Basically, learning disabilities are the result of neurological disorders that affect the brain s capacity to receive, integrate, store and retrieve information. Research has shown that the capacity to effectively perform the above mentioned functions is the result of less efficient information processing pathway. As a result, the brain has to find other neurological connections that enable it to fulfil the task, slowing the entire process. Both elements; the inability to process, retain and reuse information as well as the faulty brain wiring are the key factors that have to be present in order to diagnose a student with a learning ... • 34. High Achieving Student Growth Target 1. Principal Frank felt strongly that ranking a school higher solely for achieving the student growth target over a school that actually met the AYP achievement targets was inequitable and misleading. Do you agree or disagree with Principal Frank s perspective? In this scenario, I feel Principal Frank frustration is justifiable due to the recent changes made to the school ranking system. Within the text it indicated that Principal Frank had worked for seven years with his staff to implement best practices in order to meet AYP (Shapiro Gross, 2013). This hard work prompted the school to be ranked in the 25th percentile within the district, and due to it s high achieving reputation required a special admissions lottery (Shapiro ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 3. Principal Frank questions the efficacy of the NCLB accountability system. Compare and contrast the use of AYP ratings compared with individual student growth rankings. Which might be the best way to go in terms of the students, parents, and the community? AYP requires that students levels of reading and math proficiency are tested in grades through 8 and in one grade in high school (Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, 2011, p.1). Results are then compared to prior performance levels, and state determined AYP standards, to determine if the school has met AYP (Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, 2011). In order to achieve AYP, 95% of students must participate in testing, and 95% must reach minimum annual targets (Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, 2011). In addition, 95% of students in subgroups for disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, ELL, and ethnic groups must meet the measurable annual objectives. In contrast, individual student growth rankings do not employ specific benchmarks to establish a school s performance. If Superintendent Hart is employing a simple growth model each students scores will be compared to the previous years. The downside of this is if a student did not take the test they will not be aggregated into the schools growth calculation. I do not feel this case student clearly explained how poverty levels are being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At first he only made about $3, then it raised to $5, then to about $7. He said being a diver was the most difficult, challenging, and exciting job he has ever had. His most favorite part of his job now is showing guys how to get a complex task done safely. He also enjoys passing on his experiences for them to learn from. The worst part of his job while diving was being away from home so long. The worst part is having to manage all of the people that work for him. Everytime they do something he has to make sure everything is in order and that everyone knows what is going on and what they need to do to help, or making sure they are all on the same page.
