Chinese New Year is the

festivities end up lasting up
to 15 days.

Families eat typical foods as
they decorate cities with lots of
lights and decorations in red
color, and houses and buildings
with lanterns and launch
lanterns to the sky together with
lots of fireworks and making
vows

START AND WHY?

to year, usually falling between
January 21st and February 20th,
defined by the New Moon that
happens in that period. Chinese
New Year occurs on this specific
date because it is based on the
Chinese lunar calendar, which
follows cycles from the moon.

BECOME HOLIDAY?
Chinese mythology tells that the practice of
celebrating the New Year arose when an elder
appeared in a village saying that wearing red,
decorating the streets with red lanterns and
inscriptions, and setting off fireworks were ways
to ward off a monster called Nian.
Historically speaking, some believe that New
Year's celebrations date back to the period of
Emperor Yao (around 2200 BC), but the first
records of the celebration in China date back to
the Han Dynasty period (between the 3rd and
3rd centuries AD) thus becoming a holiday
