Unit 5: On a business
trip
Use of
English file
Unit 5: On a business
trip
1. Present progressive
2. Vocabulary: hotels
Use #1
To talk about actions happening
now, at the time of speaking or
around the moment of speaking (not
necessarily at this very moment)
Form: Verb BE + verbING
drink + ing = drinking
watch + ing = watching
listen + ing = listening
Important:
Stative verbs cannot be used in
progressive/continuous form.
Examples: like, know, want, have (have
expressing possession)
For more information visit:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/course
/lower-intermediate/unit-25/tab/grammar
Present continuous
Use #2
To talk about a definite plan or
arrangement that has been made
previously.
Example
I’m playing tennis with Tom tomorrow.
We’re leaving for Atlanta next week.
Note: When we use the present
continuous for future arrangements, it’s
absolutely necessary to include the time
expression.
Notice:
Paul is watching a movie. (We understand
he is doing the action at the moment of
speaking.)
Paul is watching a movie later. (The
expression of time tells us this is happening
in the future.)
Rule #1
Verbs ending in -e
have – having
write – writing
Rule #2
Verbs ending in -ie
die – dying
lie –lying
Rule #3
Verbs with one syllable ending in one
vowel followed by one consonant,
swim swimming
run running
Exceptions
Ending in one vowel plus
-y: buy buying / -w: show showing
-x: fix fixing / -z: buzz buzzing
Subject + be + VERB(ING)
