Essay Justice in the Oresteia
Justice in the Oresteia
Justice is often taken for granted in the world we live in today with a judicial system that gives
fair punishment for most crimes. In the Oresteia justice works much differently, where there are
no judges or a court system to resolve disputes, instead there is revenge. Revenge is very messy
because somebody will and has to get hurt first to desire revenge, and it leads to a cycle that
cannot and will not end until everybody is dead. Justice does not and cannot only be revenge
because in the end nobody would be left in that system. Aeschylus Oresteia focuses on revenge as
justice, with the old system that no longer works and that someone must fix, and a new system that

Clytemnestra also gives her justification for murdering her husband, and for ten long years she
thought about how sweet revenge would be when Agamemnon arrived. She also tells her lover,
Aegisthus, Our lives are based on pain (1690). Clytemnestra does not realize how ironic her
statement will be later on when pain controls her. Aegisthus sums up their code of justice when
he says, There are gods in heaven avenging men, / blazing down on all the crimes of earth (1607
1608). He also is foreshadowing that his crime must also be paid for and he will suffer the
consequences of killing Agamemnon and revenge. Aegisthus does not realize it, but Orestes is
seeking revenge upon him and his for the death of Agamemnon. After Orestes kills them, there
is nobody left alive to kill him to avenge their deaths. Clytemnestra invokes the Furies who seek
revenge for anybody who has nobody to seek it for them. The Furies chase Orestes to Apollo s
temple where Orestes asks him for forgiveness, Lord Apollo, you know the rules of justice,
/ know them well. Now learn compassion (88 89). Orestes is the first person who is trying to
change the system and realizes it must be changed for the gods and the Furies to spare his life.
Revenge as justice has one major problem,

On a Sunday afternoon, I can think of no better activity than to stroll around Los Angeles County
Museum of Art (LACMA) for the afternoon. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people
who are there for the express purpose of viewing, and hopefully, appreciating art. I have been to
LACMA countless times, starting from the time that I was a very young girl, but never before had
I gone with a specific assignment to complete to view LACMA s collection of Renaissanceart in
order to compare and contrast pieces in their exhibit to the works of art that we have studied in
Humanities class. I will be focusing on Madonna and Child in a Landscape by Cima da Conegliano
as well as Portrait of a Man by Petrus Christus and comparing and... Show more content on

Portrait of a Man is a detailed representation of an unnamed individual painted with oil on oak
panel. Like van Eyck s The Arnolfini Wedding, Portrait of a Man is rich in vibrant hues, and highly
detailed. The aforementioned painting by van Eyck, which is a full length portrait that shows a
couple in their home around the time of their marriage, has a more complex composition than
Portrait of a Man, and is rich in symbolism. Christus piece portrays the individual up close, from
the shoulders up, with a black background. While it may have less accompanying detail in the
background, the individual is portrayed in a realistic, vibrant detail that is reminiscent of van
Eyck s style. The unnamed man has a serious expression on his face, with what seems to be some
facial stubble and bags under his eyes that makes one wonder what it is that is going on with him.
Dressed in what appears to be a plush red velvet tunic, it s almost as if one could reach out and
stroke the fabric.
I did not get to view the specific Renaissance artists that we covered in class as LACMA does not
have in their permanent collection Renaissance artists such as Raphael, van Eyck, Botticelli or Da
Vinci. I did however, greatly enjoy viewing their contemporaries and felt that I had done so with a
different eye than I had ever done at any previous visits to that museum. Frankly, I would have
probably breezed

College Stress Are college students under stress? Wait, what is stress? Stress is considered a mental
or emotional strain or tension that comes from very demanding circumstances. School, relationship,
family, finances and job related stress are examples of some of the stressors that college students
commonly face. According to author Micheal F. Shaughnessy, one of the biggest stressors for
college students is school related. The transition for a freshman student moving away from home
for the first time can be stressful especially if it is their first time away from home or if they move

Calorimetry Of Brass Lab Report
Background Brass is considered an alloy, or a mix of multiple metals. Brass is usually made of
copper and zinc, but there could be some other metals creating 300+ known brass alloys. The
amount of copper in brass will affect basic characteristics of brass like color, strength, conductivity,
etc. To find the amount of copperin brass one can use visible spectroscopy. Spectroscopy is the
study of electromagnetic radiation. It originated as a study of visible light, and wavelength through
a prism. Spectroscopy can show how much copper is in a brass solution by showing how much
visible light is passing through a copper solution
Procedure
1)Weigh two brass shots, about 1 gram each, and verify mass, then transfer into beaker

Why Is Pete Rose Considered An Artist
An artist is a creative perfectionist or one with an utter desire. Baseball is an art and Pete Rose
was arguably one of Major League Baseball s greatest hitters and overall players. Pete Rose was
motivated and had amazing talent. Therefore, he should be considered an artist. Pete Rose set
the bar for players after and even players that are still playing today. Pete Rose is motivated and
has the will to succeed. First, when he was walked, he would sprint to first base. Because of this
Yankees pitcher Whitney Ford gave him the recognizable nickname Charlie Hustle. Next, he
always played with a chip on his shoulder, meaning he wasn t going to be pushed around on the
field. He always slid head first because he thought it was faster than sliding feet first. When
approached by a reporter in Spring Training, he was asked about Ty Cobb s hits record (Rose was
only 78 hit away.) He was asked how many at bats it would take him to reach the record. Rose
proceeded to say 78 at bats because if he didn t step into the batter s box thinking he would get a
hit he wouldn t. This shows how determined Rose was during his career.... Show more content on

(4,256). With that he had a .303 lifetime batting average. Of his 4,256 hits 86 of them came in
postseason play alone. He played for 24 years and coached for three. Pete Rose holds 24 records,
Including 14,053 at bats. That just goes to show that Rose failed to get on base almost 10,000
times. Although, Rose did reach base safely 48 consecutive games. Rose hit 160 homeruns. He
crossed home 2,165 time. 1,314 of Rose s hits were RBI s, which means 1,314 time he got a hit, a

A Humanist Society Of New Mexico
What is a humanist? Many people do not think about what defines a humanist. Kurt Vonnegut put it
shortly: Being a Humanist means trying to behave decently without expectation of rewards or
punishment after you are dead. Though it isn t what anyone will find in Webster s Dictionary, it is a
simple statement that informs the world of what these individuals believe. Humanists feel very
strongly about the importance of humanlife and the utilization of the time you spend on Earth.
Fredric March, President of the Humanist Society of New Mexico, describes his opinion of the
humanist social agenda as: ...freedom of religionand freedom from religion... (March 19). He later
states that they feel strongly about social equality, secular democracy, and the health of our
ecosystem. March also describes investigation of religion. He believes that cognitive science
explains all questions unanswered while individuals question what the believe in. While they
depend on cognitive science for some religious inquiries, humanists see fault in our political
motives and actions (March 16). Nigel Tubbs feels that Capitalism abates the value of each
humans life, and stirs greed causing desecration of the natural environment. He believes that
citizens are dehumanized by the non secular government and the needs of of those who are
supposed to be served are replaced (Tubbs 478). So how do humanist react to society and other
religions? Ryan Kemp s statements could act as an example of

Medicine and Doctors in Final Cut by Atul Gawande
The main theme of Final Cut by Atul Gawande is that medicine is an inexact science and doctors
are not always sure of themselves, even if they appear confident. Gawande s main argument is
simply stated: there has been a decline in the amount of autopsies performed in the medical field as
a result of medical arrogance; over confident doctors believe they know the cause of death and do
not want to perform autopsies. Gawande illustrates his argumentby outlining the history of autopsy
use in medicine, incorporating medical cases that he has experienced as a surgeon, and including
statistics on autopsy usage. Final Cut is an outstanding profile on the decline of autopsy use in
medicine. What makes Final Cut an enjoyable and informative article for all readers is its use of
strategies associated with fiction such as the establishment of characters, balance between medical
information and personal experience, and its use of active voice. It is evident throughout Final Cut
that Gawande is an author who draws on and adapts elements of fiction such as the establishment of
characters and the creation of tension and suspense within his journalism. By incorporating medical
cases he has experienced as a surgeon, Gawande is able to establish many characters that the reader
develops an emotional connection with. This emotional connection develops because readers are
provided with just enough information about the characters to individualize them, allowing readers
to care about

The Steam Engine And The Industrial Revolution
Steam Engine The Industrial Revolution took place from the 18th to the 19th centuries. The
Industrial Revolution was a period during which predominantly agrarian, rural societies in Europe
and America became industrial and urban. Prior to the Industrial Revolution which began in Britain
in the late 1700s, manufacturing was often done in people s homes, using handtools or basic
machines. Industrialization marked a shift to powered, special purpose machinery, factories and
mass production. The iron and textile industries, along with the development of the steam engine,
played central roles in the Industrial Revolution. The way the iron and textile industries and the
development of the steam engine played central roles in the Industrial Revolution is the things
they led to such as improved systems of transportation, communication and banking. The
invention of the steam engine happened in 1698 by Thomas Savery. The first invention of the
steam engine was not quite called the steam engine, it was actually first called water by fire . It
was called water by fire because it was first used to pump water out from the mines. The water by
fire worked by boiling water until it was completely converted into vapor. The steam was then
collected in a tank extracting every droplet of vapor from the original tank, thereby creating a
vacuum in the original container. It was this vacuum that was employed to produce an adequate
amount of energy to pump water out from the mines. The

Analysis Of The Movie Defiance
Defiance is a movie written, directed and produced by Edward Zwick. This movie s setting is in
Nazi occupied territory in Belarus during World War II. The storyline follows the Bielski brothers

animals. Hearing of the dissident Bielskis, other Jewish refugees begin to come to join the
camp. Unable to provide for themselves adequately, the brothers argue over how they will take
care of a growing colony of people, Zwick builds in tension between the Bielskis in an ever
increasing fashion leading the moviegoer to wonder when the breaking point will come and that
it does. Anyone with siblings can relate to this pressure cooker atmosphere when you have just
had enough. There is a battle between savage and civility, both inside the camp and outside. The
eldest Bielski sets the tone for the behavior for those within his camp stating, [w]e may be
hunted like animals, but we will not become animals (Zwick, Defiance). Tensions continue to rise
to the point of an altercation, leading to a separation in the Bielski clan Zus joins the Russian
army rebels who are also hiding out in the forest. The director shows the stark difference between
the brothers when it comes to taking a life, Tuvia going out of his way not to pull the trigger and
Zus not hesitating one second. Both are leaders but with differing views of what being a leader
means. The winter came, and brought with it sickness, strife, starvation, death and more Jewish
refugees. Many undertones are laid equating Tuvia to Moses

Cultural Diversity In College
It s important for students to have a cultural diversity in a college because it helps them to keep an
open mind and learn about the different cultures around them instead of being kept in a bubble of
isolation. Also, it connects people that comes from different backgrounds which can help them
grow their minds when it comes to learning about a tradition that comes from someone else s culture
. This can be able to open up new opportunities such as careers either within their area or overseas.
Another thing is that it helps the students become self aware with decisions the students might
make based on a certain problem that the students might face in their life. Culture diversity not only
helps you to become more open minded, but to also connect with the world. Without having an
open mindthe students will just have a narrow view of the world since they re not expanding their
views from outside of it except from what they are given to see. We think it s important to show that
great higher educationcan be there for all people (Watanabe 1). Also it help the students to promote
creative thinking, when it comes to problems one might go through they would have many options
with the decisions they are deciding about instead just staying inside the box. The students has the
opportunity to go and find the solution through a different way. This explains how in a college with
a cultural diversity can affect the student s education, but in a good way that can be spread around

Jackson once told me that Napoleons plan for the Louisiana territory was to have thousands of
French farmers settle there. There were some people who liked the purchase and some that didn

more room for settlement and that the whole Louisiana territory would be carved into new

Physics Of A Firefighter
The art of reading fire is a very important skill that anyone should know how to do. Firefighters
are the best at knowing when and where they need to attack the fire first. One can learn a lot
about what a fire is going to do before it happens based on the smoke alone. When the first truck
rolls up on scene and there is smoke billowing out of every nook and cranny of a burning structure,
the majority of the time somebody on that truck is going to know exactly where that fireis located
before any regular civilian would.
The first and foremost thing on any fireman s mind is there safety. If the area or task is not safe

Andrew Neiman s Character Development In Andre Assignment...
Before we determine which scenes reflect Aristotle s story elements, we need to first determine the
three primary roles that drive the story. In this case we have Andrew Neiman as the lead character
(protagonist), Terrence Fletcher as the conflicting character (antagonist) and the tritagonist or
supporting characters as Neiman s father, his girlfriend, etc.
Exposition. Andrews s objective goal from childhood was to become a professional drummer and
he aspires to become one of the greats. Through his father s support, he is enrolled at the
Prestigious Shaffer conservatory school in New York to pursue his dream. This is portrayed in the
very first 12 minute scenes when he is discovered late at night in the music room practicing to when

In the end Andrew is confident about his talent even without Fletcher approval, in a moment in
which Fletcher has betrayed him, he masters the courage to play and take the lead of the band and
of Fletcher himself.
In addition Andrew starts off convinced that his talent is sufficient to entitle him to the core
drummer role. He soon discovers that he is not the only one with talent. So extra hard
work, sacrifice and suffering are also required. Fletcher tries to teach him that.
In the end, he discovers that he has to stand on his own and deliver. Through great
ambition,confidence and enthusiasm, he thrives.
B2. Fletcher s character development.
In the beginning, Fletcher is who he is, abusive, mocking and insulting not only to Andrew but to
every student. It becomes personal when he discovers that Andrew testified against him. That is
when he denies Andrew a sheet of music as a sign of revenge

Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed the Straight of Gibraltar at first with the sole intention of avenging king
Roderic for the crime he committed. However, because of the weakness of the kingdom due to

their contacts in North Africa, who in turn encouraged the able Arabs to capture Spain. This

Ethnography of Basketball Fan Culture
Ethnography of Basketball Fan Culture Part 1 Introduction As a basketball fanatic, I choose to
investigate how fan culture surrounding basketball has grown and has become such a fan oriented
league. Basketball has expanded and has become a global phenomenon allowing fans to interact
with athletes and change the way fans watch basketball through social media. Being a basketball fan
where you could only watch your favorite teams games on television and listen on the radio to
now being able to stream live games online with your laptop, phone, tablet, etc. There was a time
players could only show their personalities by interviews and newspaper but with social media

In a way, fans feel more attached to a player having to interact with a certain player on Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram rather then just reading about them, they get a first hand experience.
Part 2 Review Of Literature NBA fan culture and its interactions with players have revolutionized
the league over the years. Fans only had the ability to either watch on TV or go see the game but

The Importance Of Organizational Culture
The Business Dictionary defines organizational culture as values and behaviors based on shared
attitudes, beliefs, customs, and written and unwritten rules that have been developed over time (
Organizational Culture , 2017). Simply put, organizational culture is how people learn, think and
act on a daily basis within an organization. But if organizational cultureis only unique social and
psychological environments within a business, then how is it possible that it can be just as
influential as business strategy? Research suggests that a strong organizational culture is a key
competitive advantage of business because it can be the driving force behind innovationand
alignment of goals, help motivate and engage employees, and generate fierce customer loyalty.
Organizational culture, also referred to as corporate culture, is a key competitive advantage of
business because it can be the driving force behind innovation and alignment of goals. Innovation
is the foundation upon which most businesses are built. It allows businesses to offer a new or
improved product or provide a service in a way that sets them apart from competitors. Because
consumer tastes are always changing, businesses have to align innovation with their business
strategy to stay competitive. Any company can simply proclaim that their strategy will focus on
innovation but if its employees are discouraged from being creative, if output quantity drives their

Lawrence of Arabia bolstered the Allied Powers through the capture of Damascus by reinforcing
General Allenby s forces and in the process he demonstrated his innovative leadership. Wanting to
advance north against the Turks, Allenby required assistance from the Arabs to attack the Fourth
Army of the Turks east of the JordanRiver. To accomplish that, Allenby needed Lawrence, who
seemed to be the only person who could get the Arabs to fight in an organized way (Korda 379).
Considering Allenby s request, Lawrence altered the proposed strategy to have the Arabs attack Ma

them up for defeat at Damascus. On September 19th, the day that Allenby captured Damascus, the
Turkish forces were bombarded for fifteen minutes at 4:30 am by 385 guns. This full scale
infantry assault with artillery barrage drove the Turks from their bunker. So firmly had the Turks
been convinced that the assault would be toward the Jordan River that they had thinned out their
infantry on the coastal plain, and their defenses quickly crumbled (Korda 411). At about nine in

Music Essay on Beethoven s Heroic Style
Moira LohLoh 1 Ms Yang Tien Music Historical Overview 3rd September Beethoven and the
heroic style Early eighteenth century marked the beginning of the middle period, which was
said to be the most productive period out of his three compositional periods as some of his most
magnificent works were produced during this time (Lockwood, 194). In this paper, I will
examine the heroic style why it came about, what are some characteristics of heroic music and
through the analysis of a product of the times (Taruskin) , compare the differences between the
music of the heroic style and that of before. The middle period is also known as the heroic period

An example of these dramatic passages would be on page 2 system 2 measure 1 system 3
measure 2 of Beethoven s string quartet Op.59 No. 3 where in the system two, a fast, rhythmically
and harmonically dense melody is played and suddenly in the end of system 2 (measure 6) the first
violin has a measure long segmented high violin solo. The sudden change in harmonic rhythm and
density make this measure eye catching already but the fact that it is in an extremely high register
makes it more jarring and immediately transiting into a more melodious section, which leads to
theme II in the expository section. Comparing it to the first movement of Beethoven s String

However, these phrases are still connected unlike in the heroic style many phrases like this are

composing his pieces in the heroic style would be to insert warlike themes and motifs into his

The Role Of Female Genital Mutilation On Malian Culture
Abstract
In Africa, especially in Mali female genital mutilation is a common practice.
This mutilation is a historical and cultural practice that is deeply rooted in the Malian culture. The
practice is part of the Malian rite of passage, that marks a young girl s transition from childhood to
adult life. However ,this issue compromises and violates women s rights.
The Purpose of this paper is to find out how will the ban of Female Genital Mutilation affect malian
culture and what measures have been taken to end this practice.

Adam Smith Capitalism
As the rich and privileged prospered through mercantilism, the rest of the population struggled to
make a living. Without Adam Smith s brilliance, key ideas and concepts the world today as we
know it would have never adopted the free market and capitalism as a whole. Adam Smith was
born June 16th, 1723. He obtained his formal education at the University of Glasgow at the young
age of fourteen. During his time at university, he developed his passion for liberty as he attended
his moral philosophy courses. It was this new found love of liberty that created the Smith s views
which entailed freedom for all to prosper from an ever changing and evolving marketplace.
Smith is the author of the Wealth of Nationswhich is a book where he outlines his economic ideas,
theories and policies. The aim of the book was to explain that people can help their country
economically by helping themselves financially. As people compete in the free market they must
give a persistent effort to please all consumers this would, in turn, result in a prosperous business.
Running a business in a capitalist society is difficult because competitors are also trying to please
their consumers. This healthy competition pushes businesses to gradually develop to overthrow
their competition due to profit motives. Capitalism not only helps the economy but also the
consumers and businesses. The main concept of capitalism that disassociates its function from
mercantilism is that capitalism would be privately run

The Battle Of Inter State War
Bull defines war as organized violence carried on by political units against each other (184). With
respect to this broad definition, both he and Waltz posit models of conflict which can effectively
be used to analyze the sources of modern violence. The warrior scholars employ the theories of
multiple political philosophers including Kant and Rousseau in order to build theories that
encapsulate the complex variables which lead to armed engagement. These theories can be
extrapolated in order to explain the causes of inter statewar, and to provide explanations of violence
in the modern global theatre. Overall, Waltz s argument of the three images is extremely
persuasive. The logical underpinnings of the models and the ways in which they collaborate are,
for the most part, concrete and well thought out. His theory provides for three basic ideas through
which the origins of all conflict can be distilled. First, Waltz (1959) provides that thinkers such as
Spinoza place the responsibility of violence at the feet of human imperfection and lack of reason.
Secondly, he postulates that domestic policy of a state will lead to conflict (Waltz 1959). Finally,
the theorist channels Rousseau s The Social Contract to explain warfare as a symptom of
international relations(Waltz 1959). The ways in which these three ideas correlate are what make
Waltz s explanation so compelling. The first two of these images, the man and the state, explain
how a country behaves internally. The

How Does Temperature Affect The Permeability Of The Plasma...
Introduction
Membranes contain phospholipid bilayer these are two layers of phospholipids which are facing
in opposite directions to each other. The non polar tails are hydrophobic which are water hating,
what makes it difficult for polar molecules/ions to pass through them are the fatty acid tails which
also act as a barrier to water soluble substances. These molecules move in and out of the cell by
diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Diffusion is the net movement of particles down a
concentration gradient for example when gases move about and will move from where there is a
high concentration to where they are in lower concentration. By osmosis, the diffusion of water
through the plasma membrane is possible because the lipids bilayers are water resistant to
important molecules and small molecules like oxygen and carbon dioxide, these molecules and
ions diffuse freely across the cell membrane. By active transport, ions and molecules are forced
using metabolic energy to move against their concentrated gradient. ... Show more content on

Abstract
The study will investigate the self reference effect with two different age groups. The two age
groups will be young and older adults, trying to obtain material. The first group is told to relate
that information to themselves or past experiences and, the second group is only told to review the
material given. The purpose of this experiment is to see if the self reference effect is more beneficial
to children rather than adults. To conduct this study, the observer has to use the naturalistic research
stragesty and also see the within experimental designs. In order to have a positive income on the
self reference effect. Throughout, my research I have found, like young adults, older adults
exhibited superior recognition for self referenced items relative to the items encoded with the
alternate orienting tasks, but self referencing did not restore their memory to the level of young
adults (Gutchess, A. H., Kensinger, E. A., Yoon, C., Schacter, D. L. 1). Thus, from past research
experiments the self reference effect has seen to be more limited in adults than children.
Does the self reference effect more beneficial to children than adults? My study is based on how
the self reference effect will help children s memory rather than adults because children s brains are
still developing. Children develop a cohesive

Introduction
Gas chromatography is a common separation technique used in analytical chemistry to separate,
identify and quantify the compounds present is a sample (Harris, 2010). The purpose of this
experiment is to analyze a sample of TEX (toluene, ethyl benzene, and o xylene) and identify the
peaks from the resulting chromatogram. Another objective is to familiarize students with the
instrumentation and theory behind the technique and compare isothermal and temperature
programmed runs.
There are two different injection methods for gas chromatography, split and splitless. Split injections
are best used for samples containing high concentrations of analytes. In this injection method, a
fraction of the sample is used and the rest is discarded. The complete injection would contain too
much analyte, overload the column, and produce inaccurate results. A splitless injection is used for
very dilute solutions. Approximately 80% of the sample is applied to the column and the gas is
analyzed by slowly raising the temperature of the column to vaporize the solvent at the head of the
column. This method cannot be used for isothermal chromatography (Harris, 2010).
Gas chromatography is similar to other chromatography methods in the sense that it has both a
stationary and mobile phase. The mobile phase consists of an inert gas,

During the film Steve Spielberg uses music, a mysterious shark and camera techniques such as
simultaneous track and zoom, long shot, close up shots and medium shots to build suspense,
tension and scare the audience. The music represents the shark, especially its movements and its

the audience believe that the camera is viewing things through the shark s eyes, he uses a camera

Essay The First Man-Made Method of Transportation
It s just a normal day. You wake up, get ready, and rush out the door. An everyday occurrence, yet
without one simple object this daily routine would be drastically different. Consider what you
would do on a cold snowy day, or a wet, rainy day without shoes. What would you do when
working in the weedy, rocky yard without shoes? A lack of shoes instantly makes itself known
when you step out on the icy cold ground or tread on a nice prickly bush. But so what, you say.
After all, shoes only take us practically everywhere we go. There are only entire stores dedicated to
them. Shoes may seem so insignificant, but they are a window into human progression, creativity,
and tastes.

Shoes in the Middle Ages evolved to include drawstrings to tighten shoes for a better fit, similar to
today s laces. Later, creative shoemakers began to sport unique qualities on their shoes, such as
pointy toes, in order to gain employment from rich patrons. This began the era of the diversification
of the shoe (Shoe).
In the 1600s, the sewn on sole became the norm for leather shoes. Inventors followed this by
shoes which fit only the right or left foot and thus could be much more form fitting. In the era of
mass production and industrialization which characterized the 1900s, experimenting producers
started to use other materials for shoes, like synthetic cloth and plastics, raising the general
quality of inexpensive shoes. This allowed more people to be able to afford shoes and made shoe
sizes more uniform. It also led to an explosion of shoe types in the middle part of the 20th century
(Shoe). Today, shoes are designed especially for many new, different purposes, such as athletics, to
be eco friendly, and even to mimic popular culture characters. Some traditional styles continue to
hold sway, as well. Shoes have gone through a long progression of developments to make them
more appealing, comfortable, durable, and useful.
Shoes, to many people, mean only a trip to Walmart to pay for things that don t fit very well and
don t last long enough.

Sophocles Oedipus The King
The renowned Greek philosopher, Aristotle, is widely known for his theories in mathematics,
physics, and politics. However, he is also known for establishing ideas in the field of literature,
such as the concept of tragedy and the theory of the importance of scenes of recognition and
reversal. This ancient concept and theory are still highly discussed and used to analyze numerous
pieces of literature to this day. One piece that could be considered as an ideal tragedy is the play
Oedipusthe King written by Sophocles. In this play, Sophocles utilizes the concept of tragedy as
well the theory of the importance of scenes of recognition and reversal to create a setting, tone, and
mood throughout the play. Oedipus, the mythical king of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of the use of fear to bring emotion to the reader in Oedipus the King is when the city
of Thebes is suffering from a plague that destroys fields of crops as well as the fertility of its
woman. A blight is on the fruitful plants of the earth, a blight is on the cattle in the fields, a
blight is on our women that no children are born to them; a God that carries fire, a deadly
pestilence, is on our town (Sophocles 26 30). At the beginning of the play when Oedipus is
asking the people of Thebes why they are sitting in front of his palace, a Priest explains that
there is a plague going on in the city and they want an end to it. It is later known that the plague
will never end until the murderer of Laius, the king of Thebes before Oedipus, is found. Oedipus
vows to find the murderer, which eventually leads to him finding out he was the one who killed his
father and married his own mother, thus fulfilling his fate. This extracts pity from the reader, for all
the character tried their hardest to run from the prophecy but in the end, it still catches them. Lastly,
tragedy can be seen throughout the entire play, as readers see the steady downfall of a hero, who
was heavily influenced by his hubris or pride. Aristotle s ideal tragic hero is one the must exceed
the average man intellectually, physically and mentally. Oedipus not only travels throughout the
city defeating numerous foes, but eventually becomes the king of Thebes. Not only that, according

Project Management Process
Projects are composed of process. A process is a series of action bringing about a result . Project
processes are performed by people and generally fall into one of two major categories:
1.Project management processes are concerned with describing and organizing the work of the
project.
2.Product oriented processes are concerned with specifying and creating the project product. These
processes are known as project life cycle.
It is important to note that many of the processes within project management are iterative in nature.
This is mainly due to the existence of and the necessity for progressive elaboration in a project
throughout the project life cycle. This means that the more you know about your project, the better
you are able ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3. Project cost management
This is also a key element of project management. It is important to manage a project within its
budget. Underspending can be as dangerous as overspending. Good planning and paying close
attention to spending money carefully will mean that you can achieve all the goals you set for your
project.
4. Project quality management
This aspect is more relevant in fields like construction, where the builders have to make sure that all
technical specifications are met to a high standard. But it is important when delivering projects in
the community that you do so to the best of your ability.
5. Project human resource management
You need to make sure that you identify the skills you will need for the project. Make sure you
use the skills of the people working on the project in the most effective way possible. Project
teams also need to work together effectively. There are tools to help you to do this. There are also
ways of thinking about people and the day today dynamics that will affect your project. These tools
are included later in the notebook.
6. Project communication management
It is useful to plan how you will communicate with stakeholders, donors and the project team. This
will ensure that the project is implemented in a smooth manner.
7. Project risk management

An Extreme Near-Death Experience

this paper will go over. Not everybody believes in near death experiences, however thanks to
movies and T.V. they are becoming more popular. To understand exactly what an extreme near death
experience is, a person must first know the topic s background. A near death experience is any
close brush with death. This could range from getting shot to falling down the stairs. An extreme
near death experience, in this case, is when a person has an odd occurrence with something they

That there is no such thing as an out of body experience. Many will ask, What about the people
who have had a near death experience, but have not had an out of body encounter? There is a
simple answer. Although this may be true, those people probably did not have an extreme near
death experience. For example, in a piece called My Near Death Experience, by John White
(2014), he has a near death experience in his town s pond. Mr. White dove head first into the
water, hit his head, and blacked out. He wrote that he, had no external perception, no sensory
awareness. I was simply floating idly, feeling more peaceful than I d ever been, (White, 2014).
One could say that Mr. White had a near death experience, but not an extreme one. People would
also say that no one could possibly leave their body without dying first. That is more than likely
false, if one were to ask the world if they believe in the supernatural, the majority would say yes.
There have been many accounts of spiritual encounters, of people leaving their bodies without
even having a near death experience. Another reason is, how could a person be one hundred
percent sure it is not an out of body experience if it did not personally happen to

The Method Observed Was The Direct Method
Maggie BertiLLL 690Direct Method analysis
Summary
The method observed was the Direct Method. The teacher spoke Catalan (the target language)
from the very first moment she arrived in class greeting the students with the words bona tarda .
First, she started the lesson by writing on the blackboard parts del dia , el matГ , la tarda and la nit
. In order to explain the meaning of such words she showed the gesture of waking up and then she
turned on and off the light of the room twice. The teacher continued to explain the meaning of the
words with drawings on the blackboard: a sun next to the word sol , a star next to the word estrella ,
a moon next to the word lluna and a cloud next to the word nГєvols . Second, she opened a book
and read the first two lines. To explain the meaning of what was just read she moved around the
classroom and illustrated verbs trough actions. For example, to explain the word perdre (to lose)
she acted as she was looking for something around the room. Next she asked the students, again in
the target language, to read aloud a couple of sentences one by one. After each student read the
teacher used gestures and pictures to explain what was written in the text. In order to explain the
word paГs she made an example in Catalan using students personal factors: Italia es un paГs .
While reading the book she showed images that represented what was happening in the story; each
line had a different image that helped with

The Pros And Cons Of Feminism
Feminism kicked off in 1848 in Seneca Falls when the first Women s Conference was held. This
conference brought about a movement that would only grow larger with each coming decade.
Feminism is defined as the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.
Now the question of if I would consider myself a feminist, I would have to answer no. I would
describe myself as a free thinking independent woman and do not want to be labeled under the
word feminist. I don t want to be classified under feminism because I don t fit or agree with some
of today s negative opinions that feminism portrays. One opinion is that feminists are man
haters. I am not a man hater. Upon coming to Sonoma State I can say I have began to develop
my own understandings on how I view the world, myself, and feminism. I can say that each day
I grow in some way from what I see and understand from this world. Do I believe there are
inequalities between men and women? Absolutely. Do I believe women should receive equal pay
as men? Again, absolutely. Do I believe women should have the same educational opportunities as
men. Yes. I also see that some ideas maybe should not be equal. An article in the Elite Daily ,
written by April Lee, she states her thoughts that there are dangers of comparing men and women
and trying to create same the playing field for both. We might not realize it, but when we make
these comparisons, we are openly admitting that our understanding of how to

San Mateo And San Juan Creek
What is a watershed? A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that is under it or
drains off of it goes into the same place. You think every creek is the same but in reality they re
not. In this essay we are comparing San Mateo and San Juan creek.
San Mateo creek is the last pristine creek in southern California flows from from its origin to the
ocean over mostly undeveloped land. The runoff is about 22 miles (35 km) long, flowing in a
generally southwesterly direction. This creek is most undeveloped watersheds on South Coasts,
San Mateo Creeks drainage basin covers 139 square miles (360 km).
San Juan creek begins in Santa Ana mountains cross agriculture and urbanization is channelized as
it enters the Pacific Ocean
Doheny Beach. San Juan is a 29 mile (47 km) stream in Orange County. It consists of a catchment
basin encompassing 160 miles (347 km). San Juan creeks wetlands were totaling over 300 acres
(1.2 km) before the population of Orange County began.
Point Sources (San Mateo):
The San Mateo creek has lots point source for pollution. I ll be naming 2 examples. One example is
San Mateo Countywide Water PollutionPrevention Program, also known as SMCWPPP. This
source helps by reducing the amount of pollutants that enters the storm drain system. The staff at

Explication Essay A Hunger Artist The children stood opened mouthed, holding each others hands
for security (Pg. 353) Passion and desire for attention are at its best what an artist live for. The
hunger artist is a man who wanted to be so great at his own craft that pain and suffering were a
small price to pay in order for people to give him recognition ultimately leading to his demise. The
series of events that lead to the hunger artist s death ultimately granted him the freedom to never
have to feel the urge to eat again and released him from the restraints that society put on his life.
First when he was receiving the attention society had given to him his life was well and worth the

many others feel when they are doing something to receive attention and a feeling of worth in the
eyes of society. If people can read this story and learn the meaning of self worth from this story,
then the hunger artist did not suffer and die in vein, instead he lives on as a martyr for those who
seek to do something like it in any sense and it should teach people to be thankful for the little

Analysis Of Inherit The Wind
Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the play Inherit the Wind is a fictitious spin off
of the historical Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, which hotly debated the concept of evolutionism
vs. creationism and, in general, a person s right to think. Overall this play shows the growth of
many different types of characters. One of these characters would be Rachel Brown, the
reverend s daughter, as well as Bert Cates love interest. She is torn between her love for Bert and
her loyalty to her father, the Reverend Jeremiah Brown. At the beginning of the play she fears
her father and follows only what he says. As the play progresses Rachel becomes more confidant
and starts to think for herself. By the end of the play she has created her own identity and
completely separates herself from her father. Rachel is first introduced into the play at the very
beginning where we see she has gone to the jail to visit her boyfriend Bert Cates. Rachel is very
desperate to try and get Bert to just throw himself at the mercy of the court and admit that what
he did was wrong. She just wants to be with him. As she enters the jail she speaks to Meeker
saying Mr Meeker, don t let my father know I came here , This quote portrays Rachel s character
very well. She is shy and lacks confidence, obviously worried of what would happen if her father
found out she was visiting Cates, the enemy to her father at this point. She has lived her life in fear
of her father and because of she followed everything

Nurse Driven, Sleep Hygiene Protocol, A Source Of Anxiety...
The inability to sleep is a source of anxiety and stress for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU);
this inability can lead to cardiorespiratory disturbances, immune system dysfunction, impaired
wound healing, hormonal and metabolic imbalances, cognitive changes, and delirium. Through the
use of quiet times and nursing actions that encourage sleep, or, sleep hygiene bundles, nurses can
assist in improving sleep quality in the ICU. These bundles include noise and light reduction,
scheduling routine procedures outside of reserved sleep times, the use of earplugs and eye masks,
and the grouping of nursing care activities to minimize sleep interruptions. The aim of this proposal,
therefore, will be to implement a nursedriven, sleep hygiene protocol, in order to improve patient
care by promoting quality sleep in ICU patients. Barriers to implementation include staff resistance
to the concept, concerns regarding patient care during sleep times and difficulties in coordinating
care with other units. Studies used to gather information for this proposal were published between
the years of 2011 and 2016 and were found in several databases: Academic Search Complete,
Medline, and OVID Journals.
Keywords: ICU, intensive care unit, critical care, quiet time, noise, and nursing. Quiet Time in the

Compare And Contrast Freerk V. Ray Freeark
LAWSUIT OVER THE ACCIDENT With the help of a lawyer named Ray Freeark, Jerry files a
lawsuit on April 18, 1972, against the State of Illinois hoping to collect damages in the sum of
$25,000. His case is built on the fact that because of the heavy rain over several days with the
temperature dropping below freezing that night, the state of Illinois was negligent in permitting
flood water to cover U.S. Route 50 where it crosses Silver Creek. Freeark argues that this area
was dry and in good condition when Jerry went to the game and that, following the same route
back, with little or no rain falling, he had no idea that Silver Creek was on the verge of flooding
due to rain that had fallen on the previous two days. The man who operated a wrecking

Intentional Torts And False Punishment
Introduction This week we have been introduced to intentional torts, including battery, assault,
trespass of land, trespass of chattels, conversion and false imprisonment. Most of us are blind to
tortious acts, yet they are clearly occurring around us. This class will, in part, give us an attorney
s awareness of torts in the real world. In 2005 there were 2,012 intentional torts, slander/libel,
false arrest/imprisonment, and conversion claims in state courts. (Thomas H. Cohen) Many
more torts are too minor to ever result in a lawsuit. Below, I will discuss intentional torts that I
have experienced or which may occur in my daily life. Assault I commute into the city on the
MBTA commuter rail several days a week. It is typically an orderly, quiet ride. However, winter
delays cause extreme overcrowding that makes otherwise reasonable riders irritable.
Unavoidable bumping and jostling occurs but does not constitute a tort. However, not long ago
I was standing on a very crowded train when an irate man yelled at me to move or, he was going
to move me out of the way himself. I had no place to go and I was certainly in fear (or
apprehension, rather) that he would push, shove or otherwise place his hands on me. Restatement
(Second) of Torts В§21 states that an individual is liable for assault if he/she intends to cause a
harmful or offensive contact with the person of the other or a third person, or an imminent
apprehension of such a contact, and (b) the other is thereby put in

Auditor Objectivity And Independence Essay
2Problems with Auditors Objectivity and Independence
The fundamental principle that requires the professional accountants to behave with professional
integrity in their business relationships with clients, which sometimes they struggle and make great
efforts to maintain their objectivity in their professional and business judgments. Objectivity is a
mindset of professional accountants and on certain occasions, to preserve the objectivity
professional accountants have to maintain an independent approach from those factors that can
influence and impair objectivity. Independence requires independence of mind and independence in
appearance. Not only by maintaining an independence of mind which is, not to be affected by the
influences that can compromise the judgment and the integrity of the professional accountant, but

Government Intervention Essay
1.
When issues arise, governments are the ones that intervene into the market to correct market
failures; these include issues such as climate change. In order to correct these issues government
use methods such as inequality, externalities and public goods. This restores efficiency as well
as increasing the economic well being of society. The environment is accessible by every
individual as it is non excludable. Thus, meaning that no one can be prohibited from using it and
one person s use diminishes another person s use of it. Since it is a common resource accessible
to everyone, it can easily be overused, this is when a government should intervene in order to
restore the balance. There are many ways in which governments can help aid the climate issue, one
being by controlling prices in the markets (directly) or by taxing and subsidising demand and
supply (indirectly). But, obviously climate change could not be aided through something as simple
as changing the price, so that means that the intervention would be seen as indirect because there is
no market for climate change. It will be difficult for the government to measure social costs
(externality) of climate change. These exist when the production or consumption of a good has a
positive or negative side effect on third parties that are not accounted for in the price of the good.

Executive Summary The Joint Commission is scheduled to visit Nightingale Community Hospital
for its triennial accreditation survey within the next 13 months. The purpose of this document is to
provide senior leadership with an outline of the hospital s current compliance status in the Priority
Focus Area of Communication. Recommendations for corrective action are included in this
document which are designed to bring the organization into full compliance in the areas where
deficits have been identified.
The Priority Focus Area of Communication includes 3 Joint Commission (JC) standards relative to
Universal Protocol. These 3 standards, which are components of the National Patient Safety Goals,
are aimed at ensuring the correct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
EP 5 requires a written process for patients who refuse site marking or when it is impossible or
impractical to mark the site. This written process is absent in the hospital s policy. Nightingale s
policy and process must be revised immediately to reflect all the required elements of the standard.
Hospital physicians and staff must be educated on the necessary changes and the revised process
must be put into action. Once these changes have occurred, I recommend a focused audit to ensure
full compliance with the revised policy/process.
UP.01.03.01 requires a time out before the start of the procedure. The Site Identification and
Verification policy describes the time out process however the policy falls short of fully meeting
the intent of this standard. EP 2 describes which team members must participate in the timeout,
EP 3 requires a time out before each procedure when two or more procedures are being
performed, and EP 5 requires documentation of the time out. These 3 elements are missing from
the hospital policy/process and therefore revisions to the process/policy are necessary to include
these 3 elements. Nightingale s Safety Report reveals increasing compliance (nearing 100%) with
the time out process, however as mentioned above, EP 5 requires documentation of the process. In
addition to the policy revision, I recommend the development of a unique form which will be used

Paul s Letter For The Romans
Paul s letter to the Romans is special in many ways. It has provided the church with such
theological doctrine. Within its long text, Paul assures equal judgment by God as well as equal
chances to pursue righteousness to God. Paul addresses the debacle of Israel and the implications
of that on the Gentiles. Paul looks to the Roman house churches and tackles possible issues within
their context. Paul encourages the Romans to respect and not resist governing authorities. One
topic Paul does not touch explicitly is the role of women in the church, but implicitly Paul speaks
volumes about women within the church. In chapter 16, Paul commends and greets several
women. His language gives strong clues to the state of women in the ministry of the early church.
This paper will explore the way Paul commends and greets Phoebe, Prisca, Mary, and Juniaand the
implications of those greetings to reach beyond the belittling of women in the church.
Women in the Early Church It is difficult to address the topic of women in the early church because
culturally, Women were not accepted. Generally, it has not been acceptable for women to have a
teaching role within the church. More conservative denominations may even limit that more. Aside
from a general lack of woman s rights throughout time within many cultures, Christians cite the
idea that women cannot have positions of authority within the Church from passages like 1
Corinthians 14:34 where Paul says, The women should keep silent in the

As some point we started to here the name Matt come into conversation but as I wasn t living at

cunning indeed! The problem is that Dad had been a

Mozart And Beethoven
Mozart and Beethoven are two of the most famous composers all over the world. Even after their
death, their music is still studied and enjoyed. They had various styles of composing music and
performing. Mozart and Beethoven were born with talents of musical abilities and displayed them
early in their lives. By the age of five, Mozart managed to play on both the pianoand violin very
well. When Beethoven was born, Mozart was already a well known and respected composer. His
father forced him to practice the piano for hours a day hoping that he would be like Mozart.

Money, Bond, Returns, And Amortization Schedule
Money, Bond Returns, and Amortization Schedule The flow of funds within financial markets is
stimulated by the money, bond and mortgage markets. A money market is the trading of highly
liquid financial instruments with a duration of one year or less and includes the trading of Treasury
bills. Furthermore, bonds are long term investments, with a duration greater than 1 year and are
issued by corporations and the U.S. government. In addition, the mortgagemarket creates loans to
finance the real estate market. Once mortgages are issued on a property, banking institutions
securitize the mortgages and sell them on the secondary market (CSU Global, 2016). Due to the
scale of these three markets they have an extensive impact on the monetary supply and economy.
Treasury Bills Money market securities are short term instruments created by governments and
corporations to obtain short term funding. Treasury bills (T bills) are common instruments used
in the money market and are issued by the U.S. government. Moreover, T bills are used by the
government to refinance maturing debt and to cover budget deficits. The Federal Reserve also
uses T bills as a fundamental technique to implement monetary policy (Saunders Cornett, 2015).
If a one purchases a T bill that is 90 days from maturity, for $9,970 and with a face value of
$10,000, the quoted yield is 1.200%, the bond equivalent yield is 1.2201% and the EAR is 1.222%

Sagging Pants Is Deviant Behavior Essay
A deviant behavior is a label attached to a person s activity that is conducted in a manner outside
the normalized zone of conformity within a society. There is the perception of how people view
or understand certain demeanors. Next, a behavior may be considered illegal in the eyes of the
law and it may also be viewed as immoral, unethical or inappropriate in the eyes of the people.
Moreover, deviant behavior is conceptualized in the eyes of the public even when an act is not
illegal.
Although this may be true, there is still the circle of cultural beliefs and upbringings among certain
groups of people that may not actually consider an act deviant or illegal. People in a community

On the other hand, wearing saggy pants is a matter of free will and of choice. It is part of a
person s identity. Why would wearing pants that show underwear be considered deviant?
Feldman(1984) indicates, norms are enforced to show people what type of behaviors are accepted
within a members of society. Furthermore, this raises the point in asking the question, why there are
no rules against women wearing revealing tops? In my opinion, I think it s just a matter of choice
and how members of a society view such acts which are not criminalistic.
I believe that sagging may be more predominant in lower classes such as college freshmen
because they are just getting out of high school and may still be more involved in the trendy urban
fashion statements. Next, in regards to sagging being used by upper level classmen such as seniors,
I think that they would tend to use less of sagging pants because of their age and maturity level.
In the same fashion, I believe school dropouts would tend to sag more than medical doctors
because of the difference in professionalism. In my opinion, doctors are professionals and are not
trying to look cool or make a fashion statement. In addition, I believe that some dropouts would
have a lesser sense of ethical and acceptable morals. But, at the same time, I still find wearing
specific styles of clothing is a matter of choice.
I think that the answer to this question may take on

Taking a Look at Bacterial Gastroenteritis
1.The diagnosis is bacterial gastroenteritis, commonly known as food poisoning or the stomach flu .
Gastroenteritis is inflammation and swelling of the gastrointestinal track. Gastroenteritis can
usually caused by ingesting food contaminated with some bacteria. Furthermore, some common
causes of gastroenteritis include, shigella infection, cholera, and salmonella infection. There are
many symptoms of gastroenteritis, including diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting
(Guerrant, Bobak, 1991). In addition, vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration, and children
are likely to get dehydrated more quickly. Thus, it is crucial to look for the signs of dehydration,
such as dry mouth, dry skin and decreased urine output. The doctor initiates the diagnosis by
performing a abdominal or rectal examination in order to eliminate the possibilities of pelvic
abscesses and inflammatory bowel disease (Guerrant, Bobak, 1991). In addition, the doctor uses a
stool culture to determine what bacteriaare responsible for causing the gastroenteritis (Guerrant,
Bobak, 1991).
2.The organism responsible for this disease is a strain of E.coli called E.coli 0157:H7. E.coli is a
gram negative rod that inhabit the human gastrointestinal track and mostly harmless. However, the
strain 0157 can produce powerful toxins that can lead to severe cases of food poisoning (Gould,
2010). The bacteria were first identified as a cause of foodborne illness in 1982 when an outbreak of

  • 2. Essay Justice in the Oresteia Justice in the Oresteia Justice is often taken for granted in the world we live in today with a judicial system that gives fair punishment for most crimes. In the Oresteia justice works much differently, where there are no judges or a court system to resolve disputes, instead there is revenge. Revenge is very messy because somebody will and has to get hurt first to desire revenge, and it leads to a cycle that cannot and will not end until everybody is dead. Justice does not and cannot only be revenge because in the end nobody would be left in that system. Aeschylus Oresteia focuses on revenge as justice, with the old system that no longer works and that someone must fix, and a new system that has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clytemnestra also gives her justification for murdering her husband, and for ten long years she thought about how sweet revenge would be when Agamemnon arrived. She also tells her lover, Aegisthus, Our lives are based on pain (1690). Clytemnestra does not realize how ironic her statement will be later on when pain controls her. Aegisthus sums up their code of justice when he says, There are gods in heaven avenging men, / blazing down on all the crimes of earth (1607 1608). He also is foreshadowing that his crime must also be paid for and he will suffer the consequences of killing Agamemnon and revenge. Aegisthus does not realize it, but Orestes is seeking revenge upon him and his for the death of Agamemnon. After Orestes kills them, there is nobody left alive to kill him to avenge their deaths. Clytemnestra invokes the Furies who seek revenge for anybody who has nobody to seek it for them. The Furies chase Orestes to Apollo s temple where Orestes asks him for forgiveness, Lord Apollo, you know the rules of justice, / know them well. Now learn compassion (88 89). Orestes is the first person who is trying to change the system and realizes it must be changed for the gods and the Furies to spare his life. Revenge as justice has one major problem, ... • 3. On a Sunday afternoon, I can think of no better activity... On a Sunday afternoon, I can think of no better activity than to stroll around Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) for the afternoon. It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people who are there for the express purpose of viewing, and hopefully, appreciating art. I have been to LACMA countless times, starting from the time that I was a very young girl, but never before had I gone with a specific assignment to complete to view LACMA s collection of Renaissanceart in order to compare and contrast pieces in their exhibit to the works of art that we have studied in Humanities class. I will be focusing on Madonna and Child in a Landscape by Cima da Conegliano as well as Portrait of a Man by Petrus Christus and comparing and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Portrait of a Man is a detailed representation of an unnamed individual painted with oil on oak panel. Like van Eyck s The Arnolfini Wedding, Portrait of a Man is rich in vibrant hues, and highly detailed. The aforementioned painting by van Eyck, which is a full length portrait that shows a couple in their home around the time of their marriage, has a more complex composition than Portrait of a Man, and is rich in symbolism. Christus piece portrays the individual up close, from the shoulders up, with a black background. While it may have less accompanying detail in the background, the individual is portrayed in a realistic, vibrant detail that is reminiscent of van Eyck s style. The unnamed man has a serious expression on his face, with what seems to be some facial stubble and bags under his eyes that makes one wonder what it is that is going on with him. Dressed in what appears to be a plush red velvet tunic, it s almost as if one could reach out and stroke the fabric. I did not get to view the specific Renaissance artists that we covered in class as LACMA does not have in their permanent collection Renaissance artists such as Raphael, van Eyck, Botticelli or Da Vinci. I did however, greatly enjoy viewing their contemporaries and felt that I had done so with a different eye than I had ever done at any previous visits to that museum. Frankly, I would have probably breezed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Why Is Pete Rose Considered An Artist An artist is a creative perfectionist or one with an utter desire. Baseball is an art and Pete Rose was arguably one of Major League Baseball s greatest hitters and overall players. Pete Rose was motivated and had amazing talent. Therefore, he should be considered an artist. Pete Rose set the bar for players after and even players that are still playing today. Pete Rose is motivated and has the will to succeed. First, when he was walked, he would sprint to first base. Because of this Yankees pitcher Whitney Ford gave him the recognizable nickname Charlie Hustle. Next, he always played with a chip on his shoulder, meaning he wasn t going to be pushed around on the field. He always slid head first because he thought it was faster than sliding feet first. When approached by a reporter in Spring Training, he was asked about Ty Cobb s hits record (Rose was only 78 hit away.) He was asked how many at bats it would take him to reach the record. Rose proceeded to say 78 at bats because if he didn t step into the batter s box thinking he would get a hit he wouldn t. This shows how determined Rose was during his career.... • 8. A Humanist Society Of New Mexico What is a humanist? Many people do not think about what defines a humanist. Kurt Vonnegut put it shortly: Being a Humanist means trying to behave decently without expectation of rewards or punishment after you are dead. Though it isn t what anyone will find in Webster s Dictionary, it is a simple statement that informs the world of what these individuals believe. Humanists feel very strongly about the importance of humanlife and the utilization of the time you spend on Earth. Fredric March, President of the Humanist Society of New Mexico, describes his opinion of the humanist social agenda as: ...freedom of religionand freedom from religion... (March 19). He later states that they feel strongly about social equality, secular democracy, and the health of our ecosystem. March also describes investigation of religion. He believes that cognitive science explains all questions unanswered while individuals question what the believe in. While they depend on cognitive science for some religious inquiries, humanists see fault in our political motives and actions (March 16). Nigel Tubbs feels that Capitalism abates the value of each humans life, and stirs greed causing desecration of the natural environment. He believes that citizens are dehumanized by the non secular government and the needs of of those who are supposed to be served are replaced (Tubbs 478). Medicine and Doctors in Final Cut by Atul Gawande The main theme of Final Cut by Atul Gawande is that medicine is an inexact science and doctors are not always sure of themselves, even if they appear confident. Gawande s main argument is simply stated: there has been a decline in the amount of autopsies performed in the medical field as a result of medical arrogance; over confident doctors believe they know the cause of death and do not want to perform autopsies. Gawande illustrates his argumentby outlining the history of autopsy use in medicine, incorporating medical cases that he has experienced as a surgeon, and including statistics on autopsy usage. Final Cut is an outstanding profile on the decline of autopsy use in medicine. What makes Final Cut an enjoyable and informative article for all readers is its use of strategies associated with fiction such as the establishment of characters, balance between medical information and personal experience, and its use of active voice. It is evident throughout Final Cut that Gawande is an author who draws on and adapts elements of fiction such as the establishment of characters and the creation of tension and suspense within his journalism. By incorporating medical cases he has experienced as a surgeon, Gawande is able to establish many characters that the reader develops an emotional connection with. This emotional connection develops because readers are provided with just enough information about the characters to individualize them, allowing readers to care about ... • 10. The Steam Engine And The Industrial Revolution Steam Engine The Industrial Revolution took place from the 18th to the 19th centuries. The Industrial Revolution was a period during which predominantly agrarian, rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. Prior to the Industrial Revolution which began in Britain in the late 1700s, manufacturing was often done in people s homes, using handtools or basic machines. Industrialization marked a shift to powered, special purpose machinery, factories and mass production. The iron and textile industries, along with the development of the steam engine, played central roles in the Industrial Revolution. The way the iron and textile industries and the development of the steam engine played central roles in the Industrial Revolution is the things they led to such as improved systems of transportation, communication and banking. The invention of the steam engine happened in 1698 by Thomas Savery. The first invention of the steam engine was not quite called the steam engine, it was actually first called water by fire . It was called water by fire because it was first used to pump water out from the mines. The water by fire worked by boiling water until it was completely converted into vapor. The steam was then collected in a tank extracting every droplet of vapor from the original tank, thereby creating a vacuum in the original container. It was this vacuum that was employed to produce an adequate amount of energy to pump water out from the mines. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cultural Diversity In College It s important for students to have a cultural diversity in a college because it helps them to keep an open mind and learn about the different cultures around them instead of being kept in a bubble of isolation. Also, it connects people that comes from different backgrounds which can help them grow their minds when it comes to learning about a tradition that comes from someone else s culture . This can be able to open up new opportunities such as careers either within their area or overseas. Another thing is that it helps the students become self aware with decisions the students might make based on a certain problem that the students might face in their life. Culture diversity not only helps you to become more open minded, but to also connect with the world. Without having an open mindthe students will just have a narrow view of the world since they re not expanding their views from outside of it except from what they are given to see. We think it s important to show that great higher educationcan be there for all people (Watanabe 1). Also it help the students to promote creative thinking, when it comes to problems one might go through they would have many options with the decisions they are deciding about instead just staying inside the box. He obtained his formal education at the University of Glasgow at the young age of fourteen. • 25. The Battle Of Inter State War Bull defines war as organized violence carried on by political units against each other (184). With respect to this broad definition, both he and Waltz posit models of conflict which can effectively be used to analyze the sources of modern violence. The warrior scholars employ the theories of multiple political philosophers including Kant and Rousseau in order to build theories that encapsulate the complex variables which lead to armed engagement. These theories can be extrapolated in order to explain the causes of inter statewar, and to provide explanations of violence in the modern global theatre. Overall, Waltz s argument of the three images is extremely persuasive. The logical underpinnings of the models and the ways in which they collaborate are, for the most part, concrete and well thought out. His theory provides for three basic ideas through which the origins of all conflict can be distilled. First, Waltz (1959) provides that thinkers such as Spinoza place the responsibility of violence at the feet of human imperfection and lack of reason. Secondly, he postulates that domestic policy of a state will lead to conflict (Waltz 1959). Finally, the theorist channels Rousseau s The Social Contract to explain warfare as a symptom of international relations(Waltz 1959). The ways in which these three ideas correlate are what make Waltz s explanation so compelling. The first two of these images, the man and the state, explain how a country behaves internally. The ... Introduction Membranes contain phospholipid bilayer these are two layers of phospholipids which are facing in opposite directions to each other. The non polar tails are hydrophobic which are water hating, what makes it difficult for polar molecules/ions to pass through them are the fatty acid tails which also act as a barrier to water soluble substances. These molecules move in and out of the cell by diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Diffusion is the net movement of particles down a concentration gradient for example when gases move about and will move from where there is a high concentration to where they are in lower concentration. By osmosis, the diffusion of water through the plasma membrane is possible because the lipids bilayers are water resistant to important molecules and small molecules like oxygen and carbon dioxide, these molecules and ions diffuse freely across the cell membrane. The two age groups will be young and older adults, trying to obtain material. The first group is told to relate that information to themselves or past experiences and, the second group is only told to review the material given. To conduct this study, the observer has to use the naturalistic research stragesty and also see the within experimental designs. In order to have a positive income on the self reference effect. Throughout, my research I have found, like young adults, older adults exhibited superior recognition for self referenced items relative to the items encoded with the alternate orienting tasks, but self referencing did not restore their memory to the level of young adults (Gutchess, A. Introduction to Gas Chromatography Jeffrey Palumbo ID: 20523300 Chem 224L Section 003 Partner: Victor ЕЃotocki Date of Experiment: June 17, 2015 Introduction Gas chromatography is a common separation technique used in analytical chemistry to separate, identify and quantify the compounds present is a sample (Harris, 2010). The purpose of this experiment is to analyze a sample of TEX (toluene, ethyl benzene, and o xylene) and identify the peaks from the resulting chromatogram. Another objective is to familiarize students with the instrumentation and theory behind the technique and compare isothermal and temperature programmed runs. There are two different injection methods for gas chromatography, split and splitless. Split injections are best used for samples containing high concentrations of analytes. In this injection method, a fraction of the sample is used and the rest is discarded. The complete injection would contain too much analyte, overload the column, and produce inaccurate results. A splitless injection is used for very dilute solutions. Approximately 80% of the sample is applied to the column and the gas is analyzed by slowly raising the temperature of the column to vaporize the solvent at the head of the column. This method cannot be used for isothermal chromatography (Harris, 2010). Gas chromatography is similar to other chromatography methods in the sense that it has both a stationary and mobile phase. • 30. Essay The First Man-Made Method of Transportation It s just a normal day. You wake up, get ready, and rush out the door. An everyday occurrence, yet without one simple object this daily routine would be drastically different. Consider what you would do on a cold snowy day, or a wet, rainy day without shoes. What would you do when working in the weedy, rocky yard without shoes? A lack of shoes instantly makes itself known when you step out on the icy cold ground or tread on a nice prickly bush. But so what, you say. After all, shoes only take us practically everywhere we go. There are only entire stores dedicated to them. Later, creative shoemakers began to sport unique qualities on their shoes, such as pointy toes, in order to gain employment from rich patrons. This began the era of the diversification of the shoe (Shoe). In the 1600s, the sewn on sole became the norm for leather shoes. Inventors followed this by shoes which fit only the right or left foot and thus could be much more form fitting. In the era of mass production and industrialization which characterized the 1900s, experimenting producers started to use other materials for shoes, like synthetic cloth and plastics, raising the general quality of inexpensive shoes. This allowed more people to be able to afford shoes and made shoe sizes more uniform. It also led to an explosion of shoe types in the middle part of the 20th century (Shoe). Today, shoes are designed especially for many new, different purposes, such as athletics, to be eco friendly, and even to mimic popular culture characters. Some traditional styles continue to hold sway, as well. Shoes have gone through a long progression of developments to make them more appealing, comfortable, durable, and useful. This ancient concept and theory are still highly discussed and used to analyze numerous pieces of literature to this day. One piece that could be considered as an ideal tragedy is the play Oedipusthe King written by Sophocles. An example of the use of fear to bring emotion to the reader in Oedipus the King is when the city of Thebes is suffering from a plague that destroys fields of crops as well as the fertility of its woman. A blight is on the fruitful plants of the earth, a blight is on the cattle in the fields, a blight is on our women that no children are born to them; a God that carries fire, a deadly pestilence, is on our town (Sophocles 26 30). At the beginning of the play when Oedipus is asking the people of Thebes why they are sitting in front of his palace, a Priest explains that there is a plague going on in the city and they want an end to it. It is later known that the plague will never end until the murderer of Laius, the king of Thebes before Oedipus, is found. Oedipus vows to find the murderer, which eventually leads to him finding out he was the one who killed his father and married his own mother, thus fulfilling his fate. This extracts pity from the reader, for all the character tried their hardest to run from the prophecy but in the end, it still catches them. Lastly, tragedy can be seen throughout the entire play, as readers see the steady downfall of a hero, who was heavily influenced by his hubris or pride. Aristotle s ideal tragic hero is one the must exceed the average man intellectually, physically and mentally. For example, in a piece called My Near Death Experience, by John White (2014), he has a near death experience in his town s pond. Mr. White dove head first into the water, hit his head, and blacked out. He wrote that he, had no external perception, no sensory awareness. The teacher spoke Catalan (the target language) from the very first moment she arrived in class greeting the students with the words bona tarda . First, she started the lesson by writing on the blackboard parts del dia , el matГ , la tarda and la nit . In order to explain the meaning of such words she showed the gesture of waking up and then she turned on and off the light of the room twice. The teacher continued to explain the meaning of the words with drawings on the blackboard: a sun next to the word sol , a star next to the word estrella , a moon next to the word lluna and a cloud next to the word nГєvols . Second, she opened a book and read the first two lines. To explain the meaning of what was just read she moved around the classroom and illustrated verbs trough actions. For example, to explain the word perdre (to lose) she acted as she was looking for something around the room. Next she asked the students, again in the target language, to read aloud a couple of sentences one by one. After each student read the teacher used gestures and pictures to explain what was written in the text. In order to explain the word paГs she made an example in Catalan using students personal factors: Italia es un paГs . I would describe myself as a free thinking independent woman and do not want to be labeled under the word feminist. I don t want to be classified under feminism because I don t fit or agree with some of today s negative opinions that feminism portrays. One opinion is that feminists are man haters. Lee, the play Inherit the Wind is a fictitious spin off of the historical Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, which hotly debated the concept of evolutionism vs. creationism and, in general, a person s right to think. Overall this play shows the growth of many different types of characters. One of these characters would be Rachel Brown, the reverend s daughter, as well as Bert Cates love interest. She is torn between her love for Bert and her loyalty to her father, the Reverend Jeremiah Brown. At the beginning of the play she fears her father and follows only what he says. As the play progresses Rachel becomes more confidant and starts to think for herself. By the end of the play she has created her own identity and completely separates herself from her father. Rachel is first introduced into the play at the very beginning where we see she has gone to the jail to visit her boyfriend Bert Cates. Rachel is very desperate to try and get Bert to just throw himself at the mercy of the court and admit that what he did was wrong. She just wants to be with him. As she enters the jail she speaks to Meeker saying Mr Meeker, don t let my father know I came here , This quote portrays Rachel s character very well. The inability to sleep is a source of anxiety and stress for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU); this inability can lead to cardiorespiratory disturbances, immune system dysfunction, impaired wound healing, hormonal and metabolic imbalances, cognitive changes, and delirium. Through the use of quiet times and nursing actions that encourage sleep, or, sleep hygiene bundles, nurses can assist in improving sleep quality in the ICU. These bundles include noise and light reduction, scheduling routine procedures outside of reserved sleep times, the use of earplugs and eye masks, and the grouping of nursing care activities to minimize sleep interruptions. The aim of this proposal, therefore, will be to implement a nursedriven, sleep hygiene protocol, in order to improve patient care by promoting quality sleep in ICU patients. Barriers to implementation include staff resistance to the concept, concerns regarding patient care during sleep times and difficulties in coordinating care with other units. Studies used to gather information for this proposal were published between the years of 2011 and 2016 and were found in several databases: Academic Search Complete, Medline, and OVID Journals. Intentional Torts And False Punishment Introduction This week we have been introduced to intentional torts, including battery, assault, trespass of land, trespass of chattels, conversion and false imprisonment. Most of us are blind to tortious acts, yet they are clearly occurring around us. This class will, in part, give us an attorney s awareness of torts in the real world. In 2005 there were 2,012 intentional torts, slander/libel, false arrest/imprisonment, and conversion claims in state courts. (Thomas H. Cohen) Many more torts are too minor to ever result in a lawsuit. Below, I will discuss intentional torts that I have experienced or which may occur in my daily life. Assault I commute into the city on the MBTA commuter rail several days a week. It is typically an orderly, quiet ride. However, winter delays cause extreme overcrowding that makes otherwise reasonable riders irritable. Unavoidable bumping and jostling occurs but does not constitute a tort. However, not long ago I was standing on a very crowded train when an irate man yelled at me to move or, he was going to move me out of the way himself. I had no place to go and I was certainly in fear (or apprehension, rather) that he would push, shove or otherwise place his hands on me. • 46. Government Intervention Essay 1. When issues arise, governments are the ones that intervene into the market to correct market failures; these include issues such as climate change. In order to correct these issues government use methods such as inequality, externalities and public goods. This restores efficiency as well as increasing the economic well being of society. The environment is accessible by every individual as it is non excludable. Thus, meaning that no one can be prohibited from using it and one person s use diminishes another person s use of it. Since it is a common resource accessible to everyone, it can easily be overused, this is when a government should intervene in order to restore the balance. There are many ways in which governments can help aid the climate issue, one being by controlling prices in the markets (directly) or by taxing and subsidising demand and supply (indirectly). But, obviously climate change could not be aided through something as simple as changing the price, so that means that the intervention would be seen as indirect because there is no market for climate change. It will be difficult for the government to measure social costs (externality) of climate change. These exist when the production or consumption of a good has a positive or negative side effect on third parties that are not accounted for in the price of the good. Manufacturing companies emit carbon pollution during the production process that increases the contamination in the environment. In order to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Paul looks to the Roman house churches and tackles possible issues within their context. Paul encourages the Romans to respect and not resist governing authorities. One topic Paul does not touch explicitly is the role of women in the church, but implicitly Paul speaks volumes about women within the church. In chapter 16, Paul commends and greets several women. His language gives strong clues to the state of women in the ministry of the early church. Women in the Early Church It is difficult to address the topic of women in the early church because culturally, Women were not accepted. Generally, it has not been acceptable for women to have a teaching role within the church. More conservative denominations may even limit that more. As some point we started to here the name Matt come into conversation but as I wasn t living at home anymore, mum kicked me out at 25, it was some time until I had the pleasure of meeting this new young man. By the time I did it was too late. The cheeky bugger was already sitting at my seat at the dinner table. The bloody nerve of the guy! It appeared he had already won over Mum Dad but Trent and I where immune to his cheap tricks and transparent charm. You see, we had seen them all before, we had used them ourselves. Saying Matt has a good appetite would be an understatement. I am pretty good on the tooth myself, but I have never seen someone put away as much food (and BBQ sauce) as Matt. Monday night dinner at Mum and Dad s would never again see the existence of leftovers. This helped no end in getting into Mum s good books. If you eat and like mum s food, your in. Dad on the other hand was harder to crack. You see with no leftovers, what was he going to take to work for lunch the next day. Matt had is work cut out, or so we thought. Dad enjoys a beer after work and has the typical beer fridge in the garage. So when Matt came over he would always ask if anyone wanted a beer. Thus Matt became Dad s personal 6 foot 7 beer wench. On the surface this looks like a win win situation. Dad gets a beer brought to him and in turn Matt gets in favour with Dad and gets to drink Dad s beer. Very cunning indeed! Money, Bond, Returns, And Amortization Schedule Money, Bond Returns, and Amortization Schedule The flow of funds within financial markets is stimulated by the money, bond and mortgage markets. A money market is the trading of highly liquid financial instruments with a duration of one year or less and includes the trading of Treasury bills. Furthermore, bonds are long term investments, with a duration greater than 1 year and are issued by corporations and the U.S. government. In addition, the mortgagemarket creates loans to finance the real estate market. Once mortgages are issued on a property, banking institutions securitize the mortgages and sell them on the secondary market (CSU Global, 2016). Due to the scale of these three markets they have an extensive impact on the monetary supply and economy. Treasury Bills Money market securities are short term instruments created by governments and corporations to obtain short term funding. Treasury bills (T bills) are common instruments used in the money market and are issued by the U.S. government. Moreover, T bills are used by the government to refinance maturing debt and to cover budget deficits. The Federal Reserve also uses T bills as a fundamental technique to implement monetary policy (Saunders Cornett, 2015). If a one purchases a T bill that is 90 days from maturity, for $9,970 and with a face value of $10,000, the quoted yield is 1.200%, the bond equivalent yield is 1.2201% and the EAR is 1.222% (see Table 1). Moreover, deviant behavior is conceptualized in the eyes of the public even when an act is not illegal. On the other hand, wearing saggy pants is a matter of free will and of choice. It is part of a person s identity. Why would wearing pants that show underwear be considered deviant? Feldman(1984) indicates, norms are enforced to show people what type of behaviors are accepted within a members of society. Furthermore, this raises the point in asking the question, why there are no rules against women wearing revealing tops? In my opinion, I think it s just a matter of choice and how members of a society view such acts which are not criminalistic. I believe that sagging may be more predominant in lower classes such as college freshmen because they are just getting out of high school and may still be more involved in the trendy urban fashion statements. Next, in regards to sagging being used by upper level classmen such as seniors, I think that they would tend to use less of sagging pants because of their age and maturity level. In the same fashion, I believe school dropouts would tend to sag more than medical doctors because of the difference in professionalism. In my opinion, doctors are professionals and are not trying to look cool or make a fashion statement. In addition, I believe that some dropouts would have a lesser sense of ethical and acceptable morals. But, at the same time, I still find wearing specific styles of clothing is a matter of choice. Gastroenteritis is inflammation and swelling of the gastrointestinal track. Gastroenteritis can usually caused by ingesting food contaminated with some bacteria. Furthermore, some common causes of gastroenteritis include, shigella infection, cholera, and salmonella infection. There are many symptoms of gastroenteritis, including diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting (Guerrant, Bobak, 1991).
